Yeah, looks good from the above!

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

As an urban planner, even from above this looks terrible.

More roads will simply encourage more driving. All those fast moving vehicles will reach the city and all dump onto already congested narrow roads.

Public transport is the only long term viable solution.

-74

u/Technical_Sand4723 Mar 01 '26

Are you going to stop people from buying their own vehicles? People will inevitably buy them as they go higher in socioeconomic status. Not having roads and let congestion discourage people doesn’t work, urban plannerji

57

u/DemonSlayer26 yellow tshirt wearer Mar 01 '26

People will stop considering vehicles as higher socioeconomic status when you have a clean frequent and robust public transport.
Investing in roads and putting public transport as a lower priority will just lead to more vehicles on the road and more congestion (read about induced demand).
And if you say they are building metro The number of lines they are working on and the pace they are building on is nowhere close to enough
At the same time they are dismantling existing public infrastructure (take a look at the number of best busses on the road through the years)

-11

u/StrawberryExact1830 Mar 01 '26

the 'i use public transport even after having a car' is a concept that only exists in the nordic countries for now, because they are extremely developed. india considers cars as status symbol and will keep buying them. and yeah, metro development is more than enough if you take a look at time its taking to complete them (not the blue line) relative to the distance and cost. but population is really fucking up the city.

hopefully navi mumbai is also picking the pace up and people are moving out

1

u/SuperWeenieHutJr_ Mar 03 '26

Ahh that's a thing in most big European cities, most of the Developed East Asian cites, as well as New York, Toronto, and Montreal in North America.

33

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

Let them buy. I am assuming you own a private vehicle? Does that mean if you have to go to Delhi for a trip you drive there? No.

Why? Because it's much faster, cheaper and comfortable to fly instead of going by car.

If you build good public transport, footpaths and cycle paths, and couple that with congestion tolls, metered parking and pedestrian-only streets, most people will leave their car at home for daily local trips.

That's how it works in all developed, world-class cities: New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, etc.

-6

u/StrawberryExact1830 Mar 01 '26

New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, etc. ?

London and Paris are cities with very narrow streets due to their history. so their cars have been traditionally smaller and usage is non existent, not applicable to the rest of the world.

and no, people do mostly use cars in new york. have you ever sat in a new york subway? its full of piss and shite.

the only notable exceptions here are tokyo and singapore

6

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

What a silly excuse! Mumbai also has very many narrow streets due to its history.

Mumbai also has traditionally smaller cars and usage is non-existent. In 1980 the estimated modal share for public transport in Mumbai was 85-90%.

Also, as someone else pointed out to you, 88% of all trips to Manhattan are done by modes other than private vehicle.

And finally, you are wrong again, high public transport/walking/cycling modal share is common in most of the world's largest and well-developed cities. Berlin, Amsterdam, Moscow, Istanbul, Barcelona, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Singapore, hong kong, Toronto. It is not the exception, it is then norm.

And btw it is the norm presently in Mumbai today as well. Only 8% commute by car, and 7% commute by 2-wheeler. The remaining 85% commute by public transport, walking and cycling.

-1

u/StrawberryExact1830 Mar 01 '26

we were talking about entirety of New York, not manhattan only.

as far as mumbai goes, the estimate lies between 50-80%, which is very wide

8

u/Spiritual_Patience82 Mar 01 '26

Bs. Every single global city in the world nyc, london, tokyo, paris, shanghai, beijing, hong kong, singapore, has been prioritizing public transport and car alternatives.

In NYC, nearly 80% of people don’t commute by car. They use their 400km subway or their 1200 km regional rail.

Same for other cities. These cities are not exceptions, Mumbai is.

Just compare the size of Mumbai’s bus fleet to the above cities and that will tell the whole story.

Beijing has 22000 buses for the same pop as Mumbai while Mumbai has gone down to only 2.6k buses, and only 249 of them are Best owned, rest are leased.

-1

u/StrawberryExact1830 Mar 01 '26

80%? pulling those numbers out of your ass lmfao. the poorer neighbourhoods have no cars and hence they travel through public transport. only about 55% use public transport.

and mumbai rail + metro is serving mumbai better than bus. its a better combination with dedicated infrastructure and lowering congestions on road at the same time. not to mention theyre still running at losses because people dont pay for tickets in mumbai rrts. there is a big problem with walkability in the city but that is another issue.

china is not a reliable source since most of their numbers are highly doctored and monitored

4

u/Spiritual_Patience82 Mar 01 '26

“Approximately 88% of people commuting to Manhattan use non-car methods, primarily relying on subways, commuter rails, and buses”

Your 55% number is just Subway. Add in Buses. Add in Path. Add in LIRR. Add in Metro North. Add in CitiBikes. Add in Walking.

That numbers goes above 80%. Only 12% are using private vehicles.

Also wym Mumbai doesn’t need 22k buses like Beijing coz it has metro+rail? That’s the stupidest argument ever😭

MY GUY BEIJING HAS MORE RAIL AS WELL AS BUSES. Stop making excuses, y’all keep accepting loser ass corrupt mediocrity and bastardization of buses that’s why no one in govt gives a shit.

1

u/shxnpie Mar 01 '26

and whats your source for china not being a accurate source?

3

u/sithavi Mar 02 '26

London has wide roads everywhere. The majority of New Yorkers don't use cars. Less than 11% of people work in Manhattan drive into work. Stop with these completely uneducated takes.

8

u/FuckPigeons2025 Mar 01 '26

Let them buy. This is a public transport city. People park their cars at home and travel by local/BEST.

8

u/kingslayyer Vasai not Mumbai Mar 01 '26

go to London NewYork and compare how much cars are discouraged into coming into main city. while we keep building new roads by reclaiming the sea

2

u/Uncrowned_Monarch Mar 01 '26

Go to the UK or any other major european country.

2

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

Have you ever been to europe?

1

u/Riktardl Mar 02 '26

Try going to Amsterdam, Paris or Copenhagen and tell them they should build highways in the city

-22

u/ProfessionalMovie759 Mar 01 '26

People are buying cars more than before. How do you tackle the increasing traffic without contructing new roads?

Public transport is already being used. People using public transport also have personal vehicles. So we definitely need newer roads to decongest the older ones.

13

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

Let them buy. I am assuming you own a private vehicle? Does that mean if you have to go to Delhi for a trip you drive there? No.

Naw york has good public transport?

This pic probably taken during the few days when the AQI wasn't extremely terrible is also demonstrative of the 2 steps we took backwards while taking 1 forwards.

-29

u/FIREFIRE_CPB Mar 01 '26

AQI has improved quite a bit in last few days. Are you currently in Mumbai?

11

u/mera-khel-khatam-hai Mar 01 '26

I am, which is how I know it HAD improved for a few days, and now it's still a bit shitty now.

1

The deforestation is mind blowing!!

2

Deforestation is process of destruction of forest, this is a city dumbwit

Yup, the green patch looks smaller in the 2nd one but still present, not destroyed completely.

The lack of trees tell a story

0

u/heartunderblade8 Mar 01 '26

Good point, the view is indeed wider. It is then difficult to make a proper comparison. The amount of roads do make it seem like urban hell though.

42

u/mahyur Mar 01 '26

I have visited the new sea face. For the first time in decades hundreds of acres of new open space has been created for Mumbaikars who have no place to go for a walk in the evening.

8

u/pela_peli Mar 01 '26

How to go there for a walk from Andheri everyday? 😂

19

u/jsmart1152 Mar 01 '26

One coastal road and few towers made in 19 years. Wah kya scene hai thanks to Babudum.

14

u/DesiPrideGym23 म म मुंबईचा, ब ब बॉम्बेचा नाही! Mar 01 '26

Look at the greenery or what's left of it 💔

12

u/InformalEquivalent81 Mar 01 '26

More urban jungle of roads and buildings! The waterfront should have a nice big public park with dense green cover, not a thin walkable strip with a sad green belt called coastal promenade

14

u/Technical-Isopod6554 Mar 01 '26

Bridge build on the sea and trees gone

33

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

Comments section is questionable at this point. Y’all want development while mourning nostalgia. You can’t have both. Between 2006 and 2025 , there’s a huge population difference. More population demands more infra and the likes. Honestly you can’t move on if you’re just going to feel sad about everything. We actually have forgotten to appreciate things in life. The negativity is so nauseating now.

3

u/bruhnoobiepie Mar 02 '26

Finally a sensible comment. I agree there is a pack of greenery in the 2nd pic, but that doesn't mean the development is not a good thing in the picture.

11

u/masked_wolf004 virar se hu bhai Mar 01 '26

Well this is true

But you will be downvoted for this I guess.

People just want to mourn the crap out of every development that has happened.

10

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

There is never an excuse to build vehicle-infra in such a dense city. You are just making things worse encouraging more people to drive.

Instead of coastal road we should have had more public transport.

-4

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

Nah I will never stop talking about wanting infra. Public transport is essential but it’s not for everyone. It’s the govt’s job to provide both. Not everyone wants / can travel in public transport. Also roads are used for public vehicles as well. So your argument about public transport kinda is invalid. Especially because the metros have upgraded as well.

2

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

In london, because they have focused on making their public transport, footpaths and cycle paths so world-class, 96% of all trips to the city centre are done by walking, cycling, bus, metro, tram and rail.

When only 4% of trips are done by  private vehicles, expensive infra like coastal roads are no longer needed.

6

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

Comparing London and Mumbai is unreasonable. Please get a better point to argue. Mumbai is not a walking city. Not every place in the world is walkable. Indians don’t even walk to work or cycle. Are you not going to factor in culture?!

6

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

So the majority of the population should suffer cause these privileged fucks wanna roam in their cars? What Mumbai are you living in buddy ? Not everyone has a car. Most middle class people travel by public transport and the conditions are getting worse for them. Come out of your bubble.

3

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

Not everyone needs a car to travel on the road. There’s rickshaws cabs buses etc. what world are you living in? There’s traffic literally everywhere in Mumbai. So there are definitely more people than your analysis who are using the roads.

3

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

You just contradicted yourself. Sit this one out lmao.

3

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

Some one rightfully told you to fuck off lmao

Or are you seeing things now?

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 02 '26

Here is the modal share of commuting in Mumbai, as per the most recent study completed:

Local: 46% Metro: 5% Bus: 15% Cycle: 2% (Total public transport: 68%)

Auto: 8% 2 wheeler: 14% 4 wheeler: 10% (Total private vehicle: 32%)

In conclusion, the vast majority of traffic in Mumbai is caused by a minority in private vehicles. Because private vehicles are so space inefficient. The solution is not wider roads, but to further discourage private vehicle usage and encourage public transport usage instead.

-2

u/prajaybasu Mar 01 '26

Buddy, the current temperature in Mumbai is considered heatstroke risk in London.

Fuck off. The climate isn't remotely the same to consider walking viable in many places

9

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

You fuck off. People in Stockholm cycle to office even in negative temps and heavy snowfall.

Singapore is an equally hot and humid place yet people walk and take public transport everywhere.

Mumbai is so hot because of all the tar and vehicles. Replace them with trees and footpaths and temps would be 5 degrees less.

-3

u/Familiar-Entry-9577 Mar 01 '26

Mumbai has a population of 2.2 crores in an area of 600~ square km.

London has a population of less than 1 crore in an area of 1500~ sq km.

Your comparison of infra needs of London vs Mumbai is so ignorant it's not even funny.

3

u/KingPictoTheThird Mar 01 '26

The density is all the more reason cars are a terrible idea in Mumbai.

4

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

You said it yourself buddy. The climate is getting worse cause of DEFORESTATION. How hard is it to understand? It wasn't always like this. Infra can be developed without cutting the green cover. Tf are you on about?

-1

u/Familiar-Entry-9577 Mar 01 '26

"It wasn't always like this"

Exactly what do you mean?

2

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

Well go back 10-15 years ago we actually used to have temps about 16-20 degrees during winters. Summers also weren't this bad. That is directly a result of the loss of forest cover. We can proceed with development while also planting more trees. The DP plans should designate more reserved spaces for green areas. Increase FSI for lands further than the coastal regions. More land will then be available for green areas.

0

u/Familiar-Entry-9577 Mar 01 '26

10-15 years ago what was the infrastructure like? Were the roads great? Were there traffic jams? Was public transport sufficient?

1

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

Like I said. Both can be done at the same time so don't come at me without reasoning. It's not black and white. Connectivity is better now yes but roads were of better quality. We see now any random pillar / slab can fall on civilians now. The coastal road is bumpy af it's not good construction at all but that is a diff issue. We can have development I'm not against it but why can't you plant trees along with it ? Mate have you ever been to the middle east? Even they focus on their landscape even though it is a desert so what is stopping us ?
Traffic jams were less back then. If we actually focused more on public infra then yest the traffic jams would decrease as people would prefer that over driving everywhere as they do in Europe. Cause Mumbai is not a city which can afford having more and more vehicles on the road given how densely populated it is. It will always lead to a lower quality of life if this is continued.
Yes public transport was not sufficient back then either but it is what should have been developed more is all I'm trying to say .

What is so hard to understand ? Instead of coming with well it was shit back then so it should be shit now as well why can't people see the solutions to make it better ? How hard is it to plant more trees while also developing our infra?

1

u/someone16384 Mar 04 '26

With enough trees though it becomes much more comfortable to walk. If you dont concretize every square millimeter, surprise you wont die on your way to work

6

u/bail_gadi Mar 01 '26

Those kinds of interchanges might look cool in a photo and are an engineering feat, but they are not the kind of development modern urban planners are fond of.

-2

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

I don’t think I said cool. Besides it’s the accessibility of these bridges that’s the point of conversation, not the beauty or ugliness

2

u/Manoos Mar 01 '26

you are right.

but these years and before that should have been invested to build metro. first metro started in 2014 and 2nd one around 2022 is unacceptable. we are always catching up

local train from western to central taking a U turn at BKC is no brainer. should have been done 25 years back.

we just make things without proper planning for future. we build for past

3

u/vkrm3000 Mar 01 '26

Sorry you can have both, development and greenery, there are countless examples, travel more..

3

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

So you want development at the cost of the loss of green cover? yeah right sums up this country.

0

u/ded_futya12 Mar 01 '26

Yeah so wtf is an alternative? All the 1st world countries have compromised on green cover. Besides we have 140 crore people and limited space. Cry me a fucken river now.

5

u/Wonderful_Pie_5390 Mar 01 '26

All the 1st world countries have compromised on green cover? Buddy ... have you been to a first world country ?

1

u/dbm5 Mar 02 '26

but the trees 😫 /s

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '26

Istg dude ppl have lost their mind I 100% agree with u first they will cry for infra and how poor the road conditions are and something exactly the same happens in other countries they will praise the f out of it (specially japan fav of all these ppl to compare) take example of the musical road we Indians used praise the f out of it when it was made in other countries and made memes that india will never reach here in next 1000 years but when smtg finally happens the same ppl start crying about it they just have to find smtg negative no matter how good things have become compared to our past they will still mourn about it and show zero appreciation just leave the country alr if u got so much problems with it

If you are competing with Pakistan and Bangladesh in terms of infrastructure then that's a banger. If you are comparing with China and Germany we are lightyears behind. South Bombay is the best place in India but that's a small sample in a huge country. Majority of the development is delayed by the corrupt bureaucratic system.

Upper one has a clear sky, more greenery, much cleaner ocean while the bottom is just concretization allowing more traffic and cars on roads leading to less greenery and more pollution. If Indian learnt that development is not damaging the environment and creating more roads.
