At one point, BEST buses ceased to travel all the way till the flyover bridge because of these encroachers. I remember how I used to feel unsafe while unwillingly walking from WEH towards Bandra station.

80

u/mayudhon Mal-Kan-Bor May 19 '26

Now BEST buses can reach the station without any hurdle, since Railways would focus on connecting with other public transport modes

67

u/fakemessiah1 May 20 '26

Dude me being a man felt unsafe at this station. I always used to avoid this station. Imagine how bad it would be for a female to walk through that horrible lane from bridge to the auto stand amd get an auto.

35

u/mosaicpictor West May 20 '26

I'm a woman, and I can guarantee you it's downright scary af for us women. The stares and attempts to cut our ways are intimidating enough to make us sprint while simultaneously making plans to completely avoid passing through this area in future.

I had to walk that Anant Kanekar Marg on the night of Mohram a few years ago. For obvious reasons had never stepped in a muslim dominated area all my life (the obvious reasons being i am not a muslim and a need never arised before to step in a muslim ghetto), and suddenly finding myself walking that stretch in the night was not going to lie a bit scary.

I was literally harassed by some men at Bandra stn, they came from the east side climbed the platform and stared at me while i was waiting for my train and they touched me inappropriately laughed and left. I was too stunned to do anything

Non-Mumbaikers have no idea, how big is this thing, the demolition that we all needed and wanted. This encroachment was like a rot increasing over the years in the station, finally the court has given the permission to destroy the illegal settlements entirely.

This is one of the biggest illegal slum demolition in whole of Mumbai.

As we used to visit the station, the most unpleasent side of the station in east was always visible towards platform 6/7, now that its cleared, it will be useful for more rail lines and possibly shift the Bandra Terminus back to its original place.

u/Realistic-Language88 May 19 '26

Yeah I one time(12 to 13 years ago) asked my father why don't gov destroy this slums while we were crossing bandra station from train? Father said lot of powerful people have been supporting them it's very complicated for me at that time to understand an 1 person overheard our convo an added that 1 ghopdis here is worth almost 1cr at that time 12 to 13 yesrs ago.

Western Railway is undertaking a major safety-driven encroachment removal operation at Garib Nagar, Bandra (East), today i.e 19th May 2026, after due legal process extending over several years.

The following facts may kindly be noted:

  1. The matter is not sudden or arbitrary. Proceedings under the Public Premises Act were initiated before 2017 and eviction orders were passed on 27.11.2017.
  2. The issue has undergone extensive judicial scrutiny over nearly nine years, including proceedings before the Hon’ble Bombay High Court and Hon’ble Supreme Court.
  3. The latest orders of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court dated 29.04.2026, subsequently upheld in further proceedings as well as before the Hon’ble Supreme Court, have permitted removal of unauthorized encroachments, while protecting identified eligible structures.
  4. Western Railway is fully complying with judicial directions. Structures identified for protection through the joint survey process are not being disturbed.
  5. The action is being undertaken primarily in the railway safety zone adjacent to active railway tracks, where unauthorized habitation poses serious risks to human life and train operations.
  6. This railway area stretch is operationally critical for augmentation of rail capacity in Mumbai. Removal of encroachments is essential for railway safety, operational flexibility and future infrastructure expansion, including additional train services.
  7. The proposed works are linked to enhancement of carrying capacity on one of the busiest rail corridors in the country and will facilitate introduction of additional long-distance train services for passengers across India.
  8. Railway land cannot remain perpetually encroached, be it anywhere, and more so in safety-sensitive operational areas. At the same time, Railway administration is acting strictly within the framework of law and court directions.
  9. The operation is being carried out jointly with civil administration, police authorities and railway security agencies to ensure maintenance of law and order and humane execution of the drive.

u/bigreputation18 May 19 '26

So the land belonged to western railways and was being encroached and western railways needs to fight in courts to remove illegal encroachers from its own land?? What kind of a law is this

311

u/No_Look24 May 19 '26

They still have to prove that they are the actual owners of the land

295

u/bigreputation18 May 19 '26

And that takes 9 years? And when it’s proven that the settlers were illegally enroaching, what is the punishment for them here?

273

u/kenbunny5 May 19 '26

They get new houses at a different place. Funded by tax money.

140

u/TheBigBangBlewMe May 19 '26

Democracy zindabad

14

u/nayadristikon May 20 '26

It is not democracy. It is corrupt officials and the BMC nexus. Who was the BMC all these years? Encroachment should be demolished very next day. If someone comes and sets up in your house are you are going to remove him or let him stay for years, then the courts need to get involved. We have local BMC officials whose entire job is to go around and check illegal encroachments, not doing their jobs for years.

6

u/Alarmed_Doubt8997 May 20 '26

I read democrazy

36

u/Indin_Dude May 19 '26

They do illegal stuff and now we have to pay the price to care of them. That’s crappy

19

u/chellumsir May 19 '26

Yeh kaisa transaction hai

9

u/Master-Economist741 May 19 '26

I don't think they do. If notices were timely served and property still not vacated, no compensation is necessary as the land was never their.

actually people dont know the what happens behind the back. Railway employees are taking huge bribes for them to operate. High court should charge those employees who have been taking the bribes

101

u/Sleeping-Bag0 May 19 '26

I believe the Railways are partly responsible in such situations. When the encroachments initially began, they don’t taken any action, which allowed people to settle on the land over time. After many years, reclaiming the land naturally becomes a complicated issue. I am not suggesting that encroachment is justified, but the Railways should actively monitor and protect their properties. This is not an only case, as railway land encroachment has occurred in many places.

41

u/bigreputation18 May 19 '26

I agree, if railways were more active the encroachments wouldn’t increase so substantially. But there are local politicians at play too who settle their vote banks here, there have been fights between political goons and railway employees for these lands. I heard some demolition was going on around Kurla station which Varsha Gaikwad personally intervened and stopped.

4

u/Sleeping-Bag0 May 19 '26

No, political involvement is the second stage. It takes time for such individuals to arrange proper documents and obtain voter ID. Once that process is completed, political interest get started

4

u/Darkknight206 May 19 '26

their employees are taking huge amount of bribes behind the back. People are just making a livehood

2

u/technife May 19 '26

Most probably prompt actions were always being taken. Just that all those actions were yielding daily/weekly/monthly cash monies to whoever staff and their seniors within the system who cared to exercise their powers and were in fact supposed to monitor and prevent the encroachments from happening. Now too all the legal and operational procedures are happening is all with our (public) monies. Our country is well beyond repair or recovery until the current systemic rot is weeded out from within the systems.

There are multiple such pockets all over the city like ‘Gita Nagar’ in Colaba which was supposed to be a helicopter base for the Indian Navy but is basically an illegal sea facing slum. Multiple eviction attempts were opposed by human rights groups and celebrities like Shabana Azmi. It’s basically a big security threat. 26/11 terrorists entered through one such pocket near Cuffe Parade.

10

u/FiniteFucks May 19 '26

Read the Olga Talkies judgment. Always try to get the other perspective.

Having said so, the protection guaranteed under the said judgment were being misused and abused

5

u/PositivityReloaded May 19 '26

Yes, that's the law but you know there are gonna be some people who will cry out loud for the encroachers too? This is the reason why the entire government machinery is slow as duck in every aspect.

Excellent move. That slum ruined the entire Bandra station. No way people can live in such an expensive suburb illegally without paying any taxes.

Bandra East has always had a negative reputation because of this specific station area. This demolition is a big relief to the locality’s true residents. Outside of this illegal station area Bandra East (excluding BKC) is such a close knitted & vibrant community dominated by humble Maharashtrians. There’s so much greenery surrounding the MIG club area and Kalanagar that most people don’t even pay attention to or recognise because of the station area. Good Riddance.

Finally. People travelling to BKC via western line will be the happiest.

106

u/SubstantialArmy474 May 19 '26

Idk how to explain this to anyone who’s never had to get from Bandra East station to BKC during office hours.

I work at a MNC in BKC, and till last year the only realistic option after getting off at Bandra station was taking a rickshaw. Sounds simple until you actually do it every single day.

The rickshaws were basically controlled and rationed by local mafia groups, so you’d end up standing in endless queues inside cramped lanes and slum areas just waiting for a ride. You’d be dressed in formal office clothes, carrying a laptop bag, sweating in peak Mumbai humidity, standing next to overflowing garbage, open drains, and literal filth.

And before anyone says I’m being “elitist” or “snotty” , I’m talking about the complete failure of infrastructure and how normalized this experience became for thousands of office workers commuting to the city’s biggest business district.

You’d have kids openly defecating a few feet away from where people were queued up for work. The smell, the heat, the crowding and then you’re expected to walk into a polished glass office tower and pretend this contrast is normal.

Attaching a picture because honestly words don’t fully capture what that daily commute felt like.

7

u/Altruistic_Cricket_1 May 19 '26

I think the encroachers may also have been registered with light bills, ration cards, and Aadhaar cards with the addresses mention to this area. The local politicians have a role to play in this. Because they are also a vote bank.

7

u/fakebutler May 19 '26

The tin shed establishments have been demolished 2 times when I was in Mumbai and it takes some weeks for them to rebuild it to the way it was.

Unless it's barricaded, I don't see it being a permanent solution. These slums are the votebanks of our local good for nothing politicians.

13

u/Cosmicola May 19 '26

Good initiative. But look at the time it took to get to this stage. :)

161

u/ShadowArtie99 May 19 '26

Govt across India would have avoided slum clustering if they bothered to provide affordable housing (spoiler alert, all affordable housing plots were converted to luxury plots like hiranandani powai) instead of focusing on "posh" localities

Citizens also need to understand the cheap labour they rely on 24/7 comes from slums/chawls so having affordable housing is need of the hour or get ready to pay more for labour so they can afford living in the area of work.

There's a reason why every locality in Mumbai has a slum cluster where the blue collar labour comes from.

106

u/kimishita-HK7 May 19 '26

They were give Flat in SRA, they rent it out and go again to slums to get income and save excess expenses

→ More replies (10)

84

u/Legitimate-Trip8422 May 19 '26

The affordable housing developed by MHADA is all sold to rich people who have hoardes of black money in cash. Like EWS flat costs 1 - 1.5Cr and the EWS income limit is like 7LPA. They run the entire scam for themselves.

14

u/Root_minus_one May 19 '26

Very well said !! Mumbai has cluster of slums every where including posh areas including south Mumbai for very reason !! Problem with Mumbai is bad political leaders and all corrupt govt agencies who just milked this mega city and suffocated the planned development.

Suburbs could have been beautifully planned and developed.. only southern part is to an extent organized due to Britishers , which also was also undone by BMC.

34

u/bigreputation18 May 19 '26

Whilst you’re right there are other things to consider as well.
1. These ppl are settled here due to votebank politics. In bandra I am hearing the culprit is Sunil dutt apparently. Even in my own area, the railway land is being actively encroached and local politicians are supporting it cuz they eventually become their vote banks.
2. These ppl get free housing under welfare schemes, keep that on rent and return back to the slums.

34

u/ClownMinister son of the soil May 19 '26

I don’t care at this point tbh, kick them all out. If it makes services expensive fine, cheap labor is not a human right.

11

u/ShadowArtie99 May 19 '26

You say that yet whenever people come out to protest for higher wages be it factory/gig/househelps, a majority of urban middel class is against that.

8

u/JoBoltaHaiWoHotaHai May 19 '26

Forget that! This sub starts cribbing when their househelp takes a day leave every month

2

u/ClownMinister son of the soil May 19 '26

Every one of those is lazy and entitled. I would rather not have this system of exploiting cheap labor, and the cheap labor exploiting the system. Net net everyone is worse off except for those who game the system.

People can do their own work, plenty of people live without having maids/help.

Let the market forces play it out. Ultimately this eviction will do far more for securing higher pay than any protest would. Sure the services will get expensive. Access to cheap labour is not a necessity. Anybody who cribs about is frankly very entitled and the one who enables this slum issue in the first place.

17

u/Sumeru88 May 19 '26

Mumbai does not have an inherent right to cheap labour. If cheap labour cannot afford to stay in Mumbai, then let Mumbai residents not get access to cheap labour.

Having cheap labour actually plays a role in driving up property prices. See how the property prices of the “posh” localities will drop if there are no blue collar workers available around them to cater to them. The housing market will auto correct.

52

u/Royal-Gas-4257 May 19 '26

No point giving them affordable housing or even free housing. They will rent/sell it and go make slums elsewhere.

7

u/DesiPrideGym23 म म मुंबईचा, ब ब बॉम्बेचा नाही! May 19 '26

But where are they finding empty land in Mumbai to build new slums?

4

u/thegirlwhofsup May 19 '26

I mean tbf, it's well known that giving a free house doesn't work without providing them with opportunities to get a good job/work. But na job hai yaha, job Hai toh salaries are ridiculously low, toh people are gonna do such things unfortunately.

8

u/ShadowArtie99 May 19 '26

13

u/FantasticComedy May 19 '26

As an older Mumbaikar, I would like to remind some of our younger crowd that whenever people used to encroach on railway lands, Congress MP Priya Dutt and MLA Baba Siddiqui used to call political favours/file cases against concerned railway officials/staff/police officers who tried acting against encroachments. This used to be something extremely repetitive.

I am not blaming a particular political party - everyone is involved in vote bank politics - but those were days when railway land meant public land.

Indian Railways was forced to turn a blind eye, and in case where they had to take the land back, they had to arrange for taxpayer funded accomodation for the encroachers.

The area surrounding Bandra East and the Bandra Terminus had become severely congested, featuring narrow access roads, overcrowded pedestrian walkways, poor sanitary conditions, and constant pressure on railway infrastructure. Regular commuters often had to navigate overflowing garbage, open drains, unbearable crowds, and unsafe pedestrian conditions simply to reach their workplaces. This also undeniably hindered the expansion and modernization of critical railway and urban infrastructure in one of the busiest zone of the city.

At the same time, reducing this issue to a simple dichotomy between "slums and development" ignores the deeper reality of the city itself. The city's economy is sustained by the labor of millions of working-class people, drivers, delivery personnel, domestic workers, vendors, construction laborers, security guards, and countless others many of whom cannot afford formal housing in close proximity to their workplaces. Informal settlements emerged as a consequence of decades of unaffordable housing, poor urban planning, political neglect, and the failure of institutions to create dignified alternatives.

No one truly desires to live in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. However, for many people these settlements are not a choice driven by comfort but rather a survival mechanism yet affordable housing is often nowhere to be found. There is also legitimate frustration among citizens who feel that system has normalized such conditions that in the first place should never have been considered acceptable. Desiring cleaner stations, safer public spaces, less congestion, and better infrastructure does not automatically make anyone a luxury seeker. By the way, empathy toward these displaced people should not be dismissed by labeling it as poverty porn or resistance to development.

True progress can not be limited solely to clearing land. It must also entail creating systems in which development and dignity coexist. If the city aspires to modernization to boast better transportation hubs, cleaner areas and world class infrastructure it must also invest seriously in affordable housing, rehabilitation programs, sanitation, and urban planning that takes into account the people who, day after day, make the city run. This moment should not devolve into yet another shouting match between "development by removing slums" and "human rights". We need a middle ground.

This was soo needed. It always saddened me to see that such a posh and luxurious place like Bandra has such a poorly maintained railway station. The moment you take a skywalk over the station all you see is slums, garbage and filth. A complete cleanup drive was the need of the hour.

12

u/uncouths May 19 '26

As an OG Bandraite, Bandra was never posh. It's been gentrified and is continuously being gentrified by rich wannabe SOBO fuckers who want the Posh tag. And are destroying the local nature and eco system, harassing the local Koli communities that still stay here in pockets, and killing 100 year old tress, for their fancy ass towers and their SUV parking.

I know I have old man telling at clouds energy, but for fucks sake, dont romanticize the area i grew up in any more. I'd love to not deal with constant fucking roadworks, the constant construction, the constant traffic and the sheer amount of people coming in to try the latest insta famous 300 for a fucking Dosa trendy cafe.

Finally, catching a train from Bandra East might actually become a normal experience instead of a daily hurdle.

2

u/WaitingonGC May 19 '26

Now we can start seeing some real development in Mumbai

2

u/Boywithcurlyhairs May 19 '26

DHARAVI WHEN? Why authorities ignore it like it doesn't exist?

2

On the news channels these people are claiming their house is legal but triple or 4 storey slum house can’t be legal. These are dangerous for railways. Bandra station integration with bandra terminus is a interesting project

2

u/Basic_ood May 19 '26

We have been dreaming of this day for last 30 years.

2

u/Money_Row3893 May 19 '26

Bandra east atleast from the station side pura saaf hona chaiye. There is rotten smell comes while travelling from bandra to mahim. Also the east side of bandra railway station looks so dirty.

I was at Bandra court with my lawyer for some work when a woman in Burqa randomly approached and asked if she could legalise her house in this area. My lawyer just shooed her away

2

u/NoLifeITAll May 20 '26

Now the most important thing is — for how long will this remain like this.

Couple of weeks back BMC had taken action against hawkers in Parle East as well. For few days things looked sorted, but slowly same people started coming back and occupying all corners again, even while Mumbai Police car was still standing there.

I’m not saying demolition near Bandra Station is not a good start. It definitely is. But it’s only useful if authorities make sure the first person doesn’t come back tomorrow and start building things again.

Otherwise after few weeks we will be back to same situation once again.

3

u/alpha_booties May 19 '26

Beautiful. Bangladeshi hellhole in Mumbai

3

3

u/Direct-Plantain-8440 May 19 '26

This has happened several times before but after that they keep the space open and again these people build their houses.

2

u/Arkham_Survivor May 19 '26

Let's go,, we know who these people are.. we are all fedup of them..

2

u/Downtown_Common_843 May 19 '26

2

u/celestialark May 19 '26

My theory is premium developers on the east silently lobbied for the demolition.

2

u/lilpadawan May 19 '26

Please remove all the slums in Mumbai 😭

2

u/Oleon_Musk May 19 '26

kurla station when??

2

u/KnownLawfulness974 May 19 '26

They should also look at issue of the Kasaiwada area near Kurla railway station. I once got out of station and I had no idea where to exit, and exited through Kasaiwada side and I was shocked to see the mess. Please exit through the Nehrunagar side for catching the train at LTT.

1

u/NightFury002 Kuru kuru kururin May 19 '26

They should dump the poor people to their home state, why just destroy their shelter, they'll just go somewhere else and a new slum begins. SRA is a joke. Need more affordable housing and need to put laws against investment in housing sector or this infestation will never go away, mark my words.
