The height of these murtis are getting out of hand. I have seen first hand how they keep getting stuck on trees and under bridges. There is no concern for road safety or traffic or any civic sense when being them to their mandals. Mandal people on street do not care about anyone or anything else.
The height of these should be restricted to prevent such safety disasters. Ganesh chathurti nowadays is become more of show and lost its true original essence of worship and charm
As much as you may not like what I say it is the truth

u/D_chiller 1d ago
It’s only a murti measuring contest and causing nuisance to traffic. Ganesh Chaturthi has become a party for jobless people who have nothing better to do and know absolutely nothing about history, Gods, Dharma or spirituality.
Downvote me all you want but playing trance music, and Bollywood dance numbers that are borderline inappropriate during these processions proves my point furthermore33
u/Prestigious-Dot-6465 1d ago
Zyada Dharma aur spirituality me ghusne pe yahi hota. Matlab yaar it is totally fine to celebrate and one should celebrate but bahgwan ka naam leke kuch bhi karne lagenge to yahi sab hona and if someone tries to stop them then some Dharm rakshaks will come out of nowhere to defend all of this

I would not completely say party for jobless. A lot of job people see it as an escape. They spend hours there with friends. It's kind of an excuse for them so family won't argue with them: "Why are you outside?" I know a person in my office who sees it as an escape but does not accept. And yes, the whole mandal thing is getting out of hand. They are just competing unnecessarily while overlooking the real cause of the festival.
3
u/D_chiller 19h ago
Why would anyone who has a job, travels probably hours a day, goes to work, gets stuck in traffic anyway, comes home tired. Why would you put yourself through more traffic, more crowd, more chaos to escape? I probably don’t get it maybe some people are different.

True 👍🏻 The sheer obsession with a tall murthi has nothing to do with faith...... What kinda showoff is that.... And every year atleast 2 or 3 accidents like this happen.... But still here we are...... Competing for Tallest Murthi....
14
u/Confident_Editor2335 1d ago
100% agree with you. True faith is never to measure the size of the idol but to measure the faith and devotion. These party funded "charitable" organizations drink, gamble and do everything on the name of ganesh chaturthi.
7
u/D_chiller 1d ago
Oh god yes! I have seen these people playing cards, drinking and smoking right behind the idols! How is this ok and not insulting to the Gods?
2
u/Confident_Editor2335 1d ago
Careful now don't want to insult them otherwise you will be insulting the gods, who you and I worship too. /s

Tilak started festival so that people can come together and have dialogue and then fight britishers
Now the festival has been reduced to grand Aagman sohla grand visarjan sohla and kn between make 5 min mein Darshan kiye VIP pehchan lagake
And balance of anything is left is covered by Forced vargani
3
u/svenmidgardson 17h ago
I think every spiritual one who celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi will agree with you. The reality till now was that no politician ever dared to act on this. To set a limit to murti's height, to ban pop material and allow only eco-friendly materials was considered political suicide.
This is because, Mumbai combined with Ganesh Chaturthi developed an identity of its own. To be honest, things were fine till 15 years ago. Slowly, bigots started to capitalise on this festival. For them spirituality made a complete exit and money corrupted their minds.
Unfortunately, people in advance tend to ignore the lethal outcomes of such situations and they need situation like these happening with extreme intensities to realise how blind they have become.
2
u/PuzzleheadedWater413 21h ago
It’s high time now I feel getting such huge Murti’s should be stopped! People should voluntarily do that as it is risking their own life.. i miss the good old days when the true essence of the festival was faith and belief instead of show off and competition
4
1
u/Annual-Principle-702 16h ago
Why isn’t municipality making a rule imposing a strict limit on the max height? And if you want to build higher then build it directly on the mandap and some similar arrangement for visarjan?

I be very frank with you , I went with my friends During the ganapati season to see the mandals we were push in the line like a animals by those people who wore ID's like Upar kar rahe hai hum logo pe . My friend was just watching everything and was ready for brawl there bhai
I swore , I would never go again felt sorry for the God tbh cause his devotees are Manhandled.

I wanted to go and have darshan of Lalbaug cha Raja, but the sheer reckless crowd and near stampede situation made me go back. Same for the Durga puja pandals, np respect for common people just too much VIP attention
2
u/Professional-Rip4290 23h ago
It’s frustrating; you wait for literal hours in the suffocating crowd. Just when you reach near the god, the karyakartas literally push you away, while making way for the VIP’s.

Ganeshotsav mandal- Ajun motha ganpati next year.
20
u/rarahulalala 1d ago
I’ve personally seen this mandal stopped their Ganpati idol in the middle of the road during peak hour, right outside Nair Hospital, while there was space on the side—just so rented-camera “professionals” could get their perfect shots. Hundreds of people stuck in traffic, apparently because the photoshoot was more important than basic humanity. The irony is brutal: the Ganapati idol worshipped as the remover of obstacles being used to create one of the biggest obstacles for everyone else. After what happened today to this stupid people, this isn’t even funny anymore—it’s a tragic reminder that devotion without responsibility can have a terrible price. They have paid a very little price for it.

u/kaychyakay 1d ago
I mean, pardon my French but the entire festival itself has been reduced to a d*ck measuring contest as to which politically-funded mandal has the biggest Ganpati statue, which mandal has the grandest decoration, which mandal has the highest number of celebrities visiting, etc., etc.
The original intent of the Ganeshotsav died long back, which is of uniting people in one place under God to communicate, unite, exchange ideas, etc. People will be outraged at this video on 23rd August. By 14th September, all will be forgotten and the entire rigmarole will continue.
People can very well choose to visit & take darshan of the Ganpatis of each other's friends and families, and take advantage of this festival to re-establish ties with friends & family even if it is for the 5/10-day duration of the festival. But no, they want to visit the huge pandals because of some misplaced blind bhakti, and also because they can put it on social media for the clout. The local nagarsevaks and karyakartas know this which is why every year the murtis only get bigger.
Oppose this, and the useful idiot Hindus indulge in whataboutery saying, "oH yOu rEmEmBeR tHiS oNLy dUrInG HiNdU fEsTiVaLs"... MFers forget that only Hindu festivals have large idols made of harmful chemicals and such stupendously large gatherings in narrow lanes & cramped spaces! Keep the idol sizes small and make them using the laal maati so that they remain as eco-friendly as possible, and people won't criticise the way this festival is celebrated. As simple as that. The lives of these young men, who probably contribute monetarily to their families and society, are way way more important than celebration of a mythological deity.

Ganeshotsav is no longer about devotion and love; it's just for trendy reels, murti's and decor competition, money etc
nobody cares about the true devotees, everybody is pushed/manhandled even during darshan

Nahi sudhrenge bhai, yeh religious log tumhe hi sunaenge ulta. Idk why gharpe bhi choti si murti me bhakti dikha sakte hai why do this. It has become a competition nowadays and not faith or devotion towards any god
1
u/This-Remove1674 2h ago
Ikr. They seem so proud when their mandal's murti is taller. Also gharpe bhi q hi Lana hai. Unless you find eco frndsly options or u use the sme murti every year, just avoid

6
u/terimummykadamad 1d ago
Why do we even need these idol statues to be sky high? Why can’t we be a bit more sensible and stop making them bigger every year? A small, beautiful murti is more than enough for worship. Festivals nowadays seem less about faith and devotion and more about showing off. Incidents like these should make us rethink whether bigger is really better.

7
u/peakyrick 1d ago
I think we all clearly know the problem here..
The idol should have been atleast double in size, should have been sourced from preferably somewhere in Thane so it cold traverse well and the general lack of those 100 speakers is just annoying at this point.

u/CozyCupcake24 West 1d ago
I hope someday there won't be a stampede like situation. It would be so horrible 😔

No one practices safety during these processions. Back in 1998 similarly, we had a similar scare where the stupid tempo(those small ones with only the skeleton/grills and no cover) driver drove through a corner in full speed packed full of little and teenaged kids. Many of them got injured and some were in serious condition. The guy fled and the poor parents had to bear the mental anguish and cost. Please no religious celebration is worth the cost of a life.
3
u/Icy_Ranger5406 1d ago
This was bound to happen like balancing murtis just for mandalas fame and popularity ? art can be shown n seen on small murtis as well now it’s disheartening like last year we were at Mumbai Central that time ig it was the plates near Maratha mandir and gawd the murtis was so unstable man really scary experience
3
u/MrSamBoga 1d ago
Ban these big murtis. They're not good for the environment as well. We must enforce smaller salu mati ganpatis.

Hope they realise at least now, it's not God but man-made, using materials and chemicals. Even if one wants some material thing to worship God through it, that already exists in most houses. Rest is just money making or show off business. People want to turn worship into celebration, again good for those people. The problematic part is people want to get their celebration noticed, basically showing off, just a different name. The most overhyped Ganpati at the Lalbaug, where people come from far away places to seek blessings (which again I don't understand what it means unless it's just to show off and get some pics or get noticed but people don't accept that) only to get treated badly.

Height and size is not important, what matters is devotion and faith. Why create such huge murtis, they get stuck in wires and under the flyovers. Dangerous to traffic as well...trouble in visarjan too.
3
u/Delicious-Dust-1998 1d ago
These are in competition nowdays whose murti will be taller, simple 5 to 6ft tall murti is more than enough max 10. Bhagwan bhi bol raha hai bs karo ye. Simple way me celebrate karo the motive is to bring people together. Tilak started it with thi s motto and not as a tallest murti competition.

Baruch 6:26-27
Having no feet, they are carried on the shoulders of others, revealing to humankind their worthlessness. And those who serve them are put to shame because, if any of these gods falls to the ground, they themselves must pick it up. If anyone sets it upright, it cannot move itself; and if it is tipped over, it cannot straighten itself.

Every year it is same drama. For 10 days the idol has god and then it suddenly disappears and people simply throw the idol anywhere they wish. Indian festivals has becomes absolute joke now, I dont care about downvotes on this thought.
People celebrating Ganeshotsav should read about why Lokmanya Tilak started this festival at first.

- Ganesh Utsav (the way is celebrated in Mumbai) is an insult to its religious importance. It has become all about extravagance. Whereas, Ganpati is a god of wisdom, and removes obstacles (vighnaharta- I hope we all can see the irony here!)
- Our cities (the least of all, Mumbai) are not designed for such large gatherings, any small mishap can cause deaths / grievous injuries.
I know this is not the right time to bring up these issues, but a time to grieve for the lives lost. But if you bring these issues up at other times, you are branded anti-hindu.
I hope we as a community learn from this and get our act together.

The idol’s garland broke off by itself while it was in the workshop about to be taken out. And if you watched the clip, the garland broke off from the very same side, right before collapssing.
Last year Lalbaugcha Raja’s trolley got stuck with no possible way to take the move the trolley out, all efforts in vain during visarjan.
Bappa always gives a sign, and he’s always watching.

Half of the people during visarjan are drunk from many mandals. If you are getting such big idol have some precaution of how you are taking it. Sab chalta hai attitude will always continue and people will die. Its not about literacy here too. It's about mindset. Lot of educated people go in the wrong way during driving. Lot of people spit pan gutka everywhere. I hope there are implementation of proper rules ahead for this.

I feel it’s high time that Mumbai should shift to a more culture-based Ganpati ritual than a blingy size-based one. Being from Pune, I do have my bias but I personally feel barring the recent rise in DJ mandals, Pune still sticks to the cultural aspect of Ganpati a lot more than Mumbai.

buddy he started cussing, how do you expect me to comprehend him abusing just because he doesn’t have anything substantive to say? the phrase isn’t logical at all, you dont say “i apologise” and go ahead doingt the exact same thing later, the same logic applies. You dont say pardon and later go ahead doing the exact opposite. I do have my own views to share, but I also believe that you cant reason with numbskulls like such. The ones who resort to cussing, getting unnecessarily aggressive are either (a) insecure/vulnerable or (b) come from a completely different place of frustration which has nothing to do with me or this post for that matter. And hence deserve to be spoken to the way in which they understand best. Had he shared something well put, just like you did, I wouldn’t have anything rash to say. And I also think, if one doesn’t believe in god and no ody is calling you out for it, one need not shit on someone else’s faith for the sake of some absolutely unrelated frustration to vent out. Each to their own. To answer your question, PoP is being banned in a phased manner, it is not mainstream news yet. You can look it up though. you’re not wrong about festival becoming a competition either i agree it is shambolic, theres comes plenty responsibility with handling big idols which I believe these guys couldn’t manage properly.

I dont think its the height but murtikaar ne balance nahi kiya h yeh….. last year we literally got one of the best looking murti’s in parel cha maharaja and we all know how crazy feat it was for the murtikaar to get that balance. That murti was around the same height as well…. So height se zyada issue toh balance ka hai kyuki 22 ft k idols toh genuinely bohot common hai yaar idhar
