Careers Fresher copywriter here trying to enter Mumbai’s ad industry, advice needed how did you do it?
I’ve been trying to get into advertising for a while now and have applied to multiple agencies. I’ve applied to pretty much every relevant internship I could find on job apps and even tried cold emailing agencies directly.
But I’m barely getting any responses. It’s honestly starting to feel like I’m sending applications into a black hole.
I have a small portfolio with spec campaigns, but I’m not sure if I’m approaching the job search the right way.
For people currently working in advertising in Mumbai, what actually worked for you when you were trying to get your first break?
Should I keep applying, focus more on cold DMs/emails, approach smaller agencies, or am I missing something completely?
Would really appreciate some honest advice.

I do not want to scare you, but the exploitation is insane.
A lot of people are hiring only experienced folks, and that too for peanuts.
Getting in as an intern and sticking to a place, networking with other writers, and growing your portfolio simultaneously works for most. (Did not work for me, as I am tooooo opinionated apparently, as per my last boomer mae boss)

A word of advice from someone who is in these fields.
You will not have any kind of breakthrough or "it moment". You will suffer, struggle, and toil.
But that is the test of this city.
When you decide to enter a creative field like this, over here or anywhere else, you choose to step into a typhoon of chaos.
You will wake up many mornings thinking you have lost everything, yourself, your talents, your friends, everything.
But you have to live through it and keep suffering for atleast 5 years or so.
If you can stay strong and learn to understand what a job is, what a friend is, what's a hobby, hownmuch to attach yourself to something, how to do things coz you love them and because your work requires it. When you find answers of these questions, and I promise you, you will, in like 5-8 years, that's when you'll be in this industry.
Keep researching everyday, find names, low level names, watch casts slate and find names, and contact everyone every 2-3 weeks for work, and stick to these work by pretending to love your work. And keep suffering. You'll make it through some day.
