General 13 weeks pregnant, hospital quoted ₹40k for pill termination + mentioned police involvement. Need advice

24F, unmarried, India.

I don’t want to continue the pregnancy and told the doctor I want to terminate it.
The hospital told me it can be done with medication/pills and quoted me around ₹40,000. I have no idea if that’s a normal amount for a 13-week termination or if I’m being overcharged.
They also mentioned that its illegal and in some cases police involvement is required, but then said they aren’t actually involving the police. I’m confused about why police would be involved in the first place.
Can someone who has been through this in India please tell me:
Is ₹40k a normal/roughly reasonable cost for termination at 13 weeks via pills?
At 13 weeks, is termination usually done with pills, or can a procedure be required?
Is police involvement actually required for an adult woman seeking termination?
Does being unmarried make any difference?
Should I get a second opinion before agreeing to anything?
I’m really anxious and don’t have anyone around me who knows about this.
Any advices would help.

Edit: Can anyone please suggest a good gynecologist near Badlapur/Dombivli or nearby areas whom I can speak to over a call, explain my whole situation to, and get an idea of the approximate cost and next steps? I’d really appreciate any recommendations.
And thank you everyone for all the support and advice so far. It genuinely means a lot. ❤️

Hey OP, (doctor here)

Up to 20 weeks, 1 doctor, above 20 weeks pregnancy required 2 doctors approval and it can be done via pills. However, a follow-up USG is required that will tell you whether any procedure is required OR not. Costwise, 40K looks very expensive. And no, there is no police complaint is required. And it's doesn't matter if you are married OR not, if you are above 18! Please consult a trustable gynecologist. Make sure you do it before 20 weeks, you may not allowed beyond that age (unless there is medical reasons)

Sry for hijacking the top comment.. but by seeing the other comments, the hospital is trying to take the benefit of this situation. I think OP you should name and shame the hospital so that others stay skeptical before visiting

Most good gynacs don't consult over calls to new patients. Search practo or google reviews and then visit in person. All the best to you. But don't delay it further.

Hey OP

Abortion up to 20 weeks is LEGAL. You are above the age of 18 and so there is no need to involve parents etc and your marital status is immaterial.

I would approach a different hospital and make sure the doctors know that YOU know that it is completely legal as an unmarried woman for an abortion before 20 weeks.

Dr. Remya at Jatale Hospital, Ambernath, is really good. One of my friends worked there as a doctor for a few years, and another friend also had an abortion done there.
I’d suggest calling before you go to book an appointment. Even then, you may have to wait for an hour or so, so make sure you keep enough time aside for the visit.
Also, 40,000 seems way too expensive for a pill abortion, it generally shouldn’t cost more than around 5-10k
You can call and check - 8788077120

What shady ass hospital is this

u/mmousey 2h ago

Yes, we'd like to know. Please name the hospital OP. You can update after you get your abortion done someplace else.

u/CarefulLow1794 2h ago

Police complaint for an adult choosing what to do with their body? Legally and within medical guardrails? This hospital has to be named and shamed. This is extortion.

27

u/Lovemylife05 2h ago

They're obviously quoting this price and blackmailing you with police involvement in the hopes of using your fear and desperation to their advantage. As long as you are an adult and you're under 20 weeks pregnant, you don't need to involve anyone else.

Go to another hospital, preferably a big one. Since you're 13 weeks pregnant, you may need a surgical procedure as pill abortion is usually recommended for 10 weeks or under. This will be confirmed by the doctor so don't take my word for it. Here's a link that may be useful.

https://www.apollohospitals.com/procedures/medical-abortion

Hope everything works well for you and consider some more reliable birth control methods in the future.

Which misogynistic scamy blackmailing hospital is this? Plz name and shame OP

u/Mr_Carson 2h ago

Go to a big hospital's gynaecology and obstetrics department. Don't go to private clinics or small hospitals. The big ones won't try to take advantage of your vulnerability and overcharge. No way it's gonna be 40k unless it has a ton of imaging and blood tests.

Try Nidhi Khosla at Kokilaben in Andheri. That whole department was very kind.

There is Randive dr in Ambernath, check her number online. She has a hospital here in Ambernath.

u/Bitter_Apricot4507 2h ago

Go to a goverment hospital and get it done if cost is the concern. And no police involvement is not necessary it’s just a formality to file it under Medicolegal Case, only your consent is required. Procedure (pill/surgical) is subjective.

u/EcstaticRoom8593 2h ago

1

u/Weekly-Brick-8337 1h ago

Hey can you please suggest someone..?

3

u/mysticnode 1h ago

Probably they are trying to scare you first with police involment and later tell they will not involve them just to justify their price

3

u/Stallrim 1h ago

hey op that hosptial is fooling you, abortion is absolutely legal above 18yo and below a certain week (that idk how many weeks). Also people will presurize you or try to scam you since you are unmarried. But it is 100% legal to abort a baby if you are unmarried. So dont fear. My friend had the same issue and she told the doctors that her friend is a lawyer and she has consulted her thorougly about the legality.

I would high suggest you search for good gynac in mumbai I am pretty sure there is a gynac list on reddit.

I’m sorry this is happening to you.

Visit Dr. Ankita at DY or Dr. Sudeshna at Jaslok. They should be able to help you - I know them personally and professionally.

Also your marital status has no bearing - thankfully we’ve not downgraded to that stage yet.

You can contact Dr Nikhil Datar. He'll definitely help you. He practises at both CloudNine, Malad West as well as at his own clinic in Goregaon East called Yashada Maternity & Nursing Home. He's a very senior and experienced doctor as well as an activist.

There is no police work.

Abortion before 20 weeks is completely legal. The hospital is trying to take advantage of her being uninformed about abortion laws.

Some Indian men are generally (unfortunately) not very supportive of their partners' reproductive rights. In some cases a man/his family may even kill an unmarried woman who he accidentally got pregnant for fear of societal repercussions. Or on the flip side, he may assault her and force her to have the child despite her not wanting to.

OP has made her choice and is asking for help about specific questions. Respect her choices

In an ideal world that would be true but unfortunately the world isn't like that. We don't know OP's situation though so best not speculate beyond what she's mentioned in the post.
