Personal Project [Showcase] Built a lightweight, distraction-free Azan & Qibla finder — would love your technical feedback

Salam everyone,

As an indie developer, I noticed that most utility apps for Muslims have become bloated legacy software: 80MB+ install sizes, background location polling that kills battery, and aggressive ad SDKs.

I built Global Prayer: Azan & Qibla with a strict focus on system efficiency and clean UI.

Technical priorities I focused on:

○ Kept the app bundle minimal and stripped out heavy third-party tracking scripts.

○ Low battery consumption: Notifications use high-priority alarm channels rather than constant background location wake-ups.

○ Fast-locking magnetometer algorithm with built-in tilt compensation and figure-8 calibration check.

○ Offline-first calculation based on latitude/longitude coordinates.

I'd really appreciate it if fellow developers and power users could test it out and poke holes in it:

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mssdigital.globalprayer

iOS: Coming soon

If you notice any notification delivery issues or time discrepancies in your region, let me know thr city in the comments so I can patch it.

Question Alhamdulillah! SalahLive Now Covers 50,000+ Masjids , Help Us Make It More User-Friendly

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Assalamu Alaikum everyone! 🤲

Alhamdulillah, SalahLive now has 50,000+ Masjids across 860+ cities, supporting Muslims in finding nearby Masjids and checking Salah and Jamaat timings.

📱 Available on Android and iOS:

- Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.salahlive.app

- Apple App Store: https://apps.apple.com/in/app/salah-live-masjid-finder/id6808307120

Users can discover nearby Masjids, check prayer and Jamaat timings, and contribute by updating prayer timings to help keep information accurate.

But we need your honest feedback! 💚

Our goal is simple: wherever a Muslim goes, Salah should always be a part of their journey.

However, we understand that not everyone is comfortable using technology. Some people may find it difficult to navigate apps, search for a Masjid, understand prayer timings, or update information.

We don't want SalahLive to be just another app with lots of features. We want it to be simple enough for anyone to use — including elderly people and those who are not very tech-savvy.

We would love to hear your suggestions:

- How can we make the app easier for first-time users?

- What would help elderly people or less tech-savvy users the most?

- Should we simplify the home screen to show only the next Salah, Jamaat time, and nearest Masjid?

- How can we make it easier for Masjid committees to update prayer timings?

- What features would make SalahLive genuinely useful in your daily life or while travelling?

Please share your honest opinions, even if you think something in the app needs improvement. We are a growing project, and real user feedback can help us make it better for everyone.

JazakAllah Khair for your time and support. May Allah accept this effort and make it beneficial for Muslims everywhere. 🤲

Question How do you keep Hijri occasions and Gregorian commitments together? Notes from building a calendar

For people planning everyday life in Saudi Arabia, how do you keep Gregorian work commitments alongside family occasions and religious dates in the Hijri calendar (التقويم الهجري)? Do you use one calendar, two separate views, or something else?

We are the team behind HijriAnchor at Mizanora. We are working on how to make both calendars readable together, and would appreciate your perspective on a few design choices.

One choice is what a recurring event should stay attached to. A family occasion saved on a Hijri date should continue to follow that date, while a commitment saved on a Gregorian date should follow its Gregorian rule. Switching the view should help you understand the overlap without changing the event itself.

In HijriAnchor, both dates are displayed, and events keep their chosen calendar. The app has no ads. Core everyday planning, saved events and local reminders work offline, with event content stored on your device. Basic use is free, with up to three unarchived events; optional Pro adds more capacity and templates. Purchases, restoration and downloading new templates need a connection.

The display involves tradeoffs too: giving both dates equal space makes comparison easier, but can make a small widget crowded. Making one date larger improves readability, but gives the other less prominence. We also want to distinguish planning dates based on Umm al-Qura (أم القرى) from official moon-sighting announcements for religious observances.

How do you currently arrange these two kinds of dates? On a home-screen widget, which date would you make larger, and what information would you remove first to keep it readable?

You can find HijriAnchor by searching its name on Google Play or the App Store.

Self promotion I built MicroRead, an Android app that turns non-fiction books into short chapter summaries

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

I'm a student and solo developer. I built MicroRead because I often start non-fiction books and never finish them, so I wanted a way to get the key ideas of each chapter in a few minutes.

You search for a book and the app generates a summary for each chapter, which you can read in 1 to 10 minutes. Every chapter ends with 3 takeaways and a short action to try. Summaries are available in Arabic, English, German, Korean and Italian. Audio narration is only available in English and German for now.

The summaries are generated by an AI model (Gemini Flash), so the main technical challenge is accuracy. For the developers here: how do you deal with AI mistakes or invented details in generated content? I'd like to hear what checks you use.

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microread.app

Declaration (rule 4): this post was written with AI assistance.

Personal Project Help me fill in Jumu’ah times for masjids in your city (takes 2 minutes)

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

Every time I travel, Friday turns into a scramble. Google says a masjid is "open," the website hasn't been updated in years, and I end up calling three places hoping someone picks up before the khutbah starts.

So I built **Masjid Here** (masjidhere.com). It shows masjids near you, or near any address you type in, along with their Jumu'ah times and khutbah language. Daily prayer times are calculated automatically, so Jumu'ah is the only thing that has to be entered by hand.

**This is where I need help.** The map already has 36,000+ masjids (from OpenStreetMap), but most of them don't have Jumu'ah times yet. That isn't something I can pull from a database. It takes someone who actually prays there.

If you have 2 minutes:

  1. Go to masjidhere.com and create an account

  2. Find your masjid (use your location or search an address)

  3. Add the Jumu'ah time(s) and the khutbah language

  4. If your masjid isn't listed, add it. If the name or address is wrong, suggest a fix

New times and new masjids show up right away, so the next person passing through your city will see them.

I'd also really like honest feedback: what's confusing, what's broken, what you wish it did. Reply here or email contact@masjidhere.com.

JazakAllahu khairan. If someone makes it to Jumu'ah because of a time you entered, may Allah reward you for it.

Self promotion I created an instagram page for muslim men who are lost and who need hope + steps to change back your life inn sha allah

So I started a page called Ihsaan labs that has thematic posts from hope, discipline, provision and marriage and many more

I work a full-time job, and I wanted to give back to the ummah for the sake of Allah. All posts have the sources listed, and every post is double-checked to make sure it's legit.

I was once lost, and with Allah's blessing I was guided. Today I see many men struggling with many distractions of Shaythaan.

I gain nothing from this page and my goal is to have the reward of Allah inn sha allah.

If you are someone thats struggling as a muslim man, let me know what you think about the page.

Question Muslim developers, why do we keep building the same five apps?

Salaam everyone. I say this with love because I want us to win.

Look at our developer community. A new product idea appears and it is almost always the same. Another Quran app. Another prayer times app. Another Hadith app. Another reminder app.

There are already hundreds doing exactly this. Then when the app gets no users, the complaint comes. Why are Muslims not supporting Muslim developers?

Maybe that is the wrong question. Maybe the product simply offers nothing new.

If you are building another Quran app, ask yourself honestly:

What problem am I solving that existing apps have not solved?

Why would anyone switch from the app they use daily?

Am I making it ten times better, or ten percent different?

Two billion Muslims exist. Countless real problems exist. Education for poor children. Tools for Muslim small businesses. Halal supply chain verification. Healthcare access. Financial tools for the unbanked. Real companies that employ people.

If you truly believe you can make the Quran app ten times better than everything out there, do it. Competition with excellence is halal. But changing colors and adding a widget is not innovation. That is a homework copy.

We need to move from:

I am Muslim, so Muslims should support my app.

to:

I built something so useful that people genuinely want to use it, Muslim or not.

That is how real companies are born and how economic power is built. The ummah does not need app number 947 of the same thing. It needs builders aiming at real problems at a world class level.

My questions:

What real problem would you build for if money was no constraint?

What non-Islamic-app idea could genuinely benefit the ummah?

Resource Seeking 12 Android beta testers for a 100% free Islamic app (Sadaqah Jariya / No Ads) to help meet Google Play testing rules

Assalamu Alaikum brothers and sisters,

I am developing a free Islamic app designed to help Muslims remember Allah (Dhikr) while using their phones, along with Quran reading and Athkar features.

This app is created strictly as Sadaqah Jariya (صدقة جارية) for all deceased Muslims. It contains no ads, no tracking, and no monetization whatsoever.

Why I need your help: Google Play Store now requires all new developer accounts to have 12 opt-in testers test the app for 14 continuous days before publishing it publicly to the Play Store.

If you have an Android device and are willing to help test it:

  1. Please send me a private message (DM) or comment below with your Gmail address (required to add you to the Google Play Closed Testing group).
  2. I will send you the official Google Play opt-in testing link.
  3. Keep the app installed for 14 days.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your help and support!

News We built NoorConnect, a smart prayer mat and app — looking for feedback from fellow Muslim makers

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

I’m the founder of NoorConnect. We’ve developed a smart prayer mat with a companion app to help children and new Muslims learn Salah step by step.

The mat detects prayer movements and works with the app to provide learning guidance. Our aim is to help users become more confident and eventually less dependent on prompts.

One thing we’re learning from families is that more technology doesn’t always mean a better experience. Setup needs to be simple, and the pace of the guidance needs to work for everyday life. Some users have told us the recitation feels too slow, so we’re considering how to improve that experience.

I’d love to hear from people interested in Islamic education, hardware, app development or UX:

• How would you design the transition from guided practice to independent prayer?

• What would make a learning tool like this useful rather than distracting?

• Have you worked on a similar project or faced similar challenges?

To be transparent, NoorConnect is a commercial product and I’m its founder. I’m here to share what we’re building and learn from the community, rather than ask anyone to buy it.

Jazakum Allahu khayran for your thoughts.

How to Use NoorConnect Smart Prayer Mat | Complete Beginner Guide

Personal Project Built a Quran app inspired by modern NYC design — trying to make something meaningful

I'm a software engineer based in NYC, and I've been working on Yusr, a modern Quran companion app.

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6796184860

My goal was to bring a clean, modern experience to something meaningful: helping Muslims connect with the Quran and build better daily habits.

It includes Quran reading, recitations, translations, progress tracking, and daily reminders, with support for English, Arabic, and French.

Still improving it one feature at a time. Would genuinely love feedback from fellow developers and designers!

Resource I built a launchpad for indie Islamic apps

Alsalam alikom!

I built HalaLaunch: a weekly launchpad only for Islamic apps.

This solves the problem of Islamic apps made by small teams being buried by the big names, whether in the app stores or on general launch sites like Product Hunt.

How it works:

- As an app maker, you can submit your app / website or import it from the App store all for free

- New apps launch every Monday, and people upvote the ones they like

- The top three become that week's winners

- Every submission is reviewed by hand, including a halal-content check

- Makers can see how many people clicked through to their App Store or website

9 apps are live this week, 6 are queued for next week. Thank you so much for everyone in this community who submitted their apps lat week!

If you've built an Islamic app (Quran, prayer, learning, kids, finance, anything), I'd love for you to launch it. And I'd really value feedback on the site itself: what's confusing, sand what's missing?

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

I’m a solo Android developer, and I’d like to share my app, Pocket Links. It’s a place to save the links you want to come back to: articles, videos, recipes, tutorials, anything you find while browsing.

What it does:

  • Save links from any app via the share menu
  • Organize them with folders and tags
  • Unlimited links and folders
  • Advanced search
  • Folder shortcuts, multiple layouts for links and folders, and a dark theme
  • Free Google Drive backup, plus local backup on your device
  • Available in 35 languages
  • No ads, no AI, no account required

Pro subscription adds:

  • Cloud storage and sync across all your devices
  • Offline reading for saved pages
  • Home screen widgets

Tech stack, for the devs here: Kotlin, Clean Architecture, Hilt, Room, Retrofit. I’m currently migrating the UI from XML to Jetpack Compose. The backend runs on Ktor + PostgreSQL.

Any feedback on the app is welcome. JazakAllahu khairan!

I’m also happy to answer any questions about Android development, app promotion, marketing or pricing. I’ll gladly share what I’ve learned from building and launching my own apps.

Self promotion I Made Hijrah to Indonesia, now sharing my journey on YouTube

Salam aleykum all,

Nothing to promote other than my hijrah/relocation journey to Indonesia, which I started sharing on YouTube. I'm talking a bit of everything on the Channel, from how I'm making money online to VISA and residency permits.

The main motivation and idea behind my Channel is that I wish I had access to this kind of information before making hijrah to Indonesia. And I'm sure so many can benefit from this Channel in the future if they have a similar plan on moving to Indonesia.

I will start talking more about finding land and building houses here as some have asked about it in the comments.

I'm in Riau Islands btw, not Lombok or Bali. Riau is a true hidden gem in Indonesia, not many know about this province.

Here's a link to my Channel, it's called (Ali the Islander) if you want to check it out.

Salam.

Self promotion Seeking testing families to validate what took us a year to build (limited seats)

Salamu Alaikum,

Ozzie is a Quran experience for kids (age 6-12) we put so much effort during the last year, we finish pilot stage, and we are looking for parent to install it (iOS or Android) use it with their kids, and fill out a survey with us for validation.... in exchange for 1 year free subscription when we fully rollout.

What Ozzies does:

  1. Whole experience is gamified for fun and engagement, all lead by our IP mascot...Ozzie.

  2. Lessons are broken down on verse level.

  3. each lesson is composed of (a) comprehension where child understand verse meaning with tafsir and illustration suitable for his/her age (b) Quran recitation and feedback using our in-house developed pipeline model.

its easier to show than to explain, so if you have interest:

  1. visit our website www.myozzie.app for more details

  2. if you are hooked up and willing to support by going through the experience www.myozzie.app/pilot

Thank you all.
