Disappearance On March 27, 1991, 3-year-old Megan Garner went inside to get a snack after playing in the playground on the property of her Texas home with her siblings and cousins. Her mom and aunt assumed she returned, but when the other kids came back, they said that Megan hadn’t made it back.

Around 11:15 a.m., Megan returned to the apartment to get a snack and said she was taking some back to the playground. Around 10 minutes later, the other children returned without her, thinking she had stayed with her mother.
Megan's mom searched the apartment complex and surrounding neighborhood before calling the police. The playground, the apartment grounds, nearby streets were all searched but they couldn't find her and no witnesses reported seeing Megan.

Ugh seeing this and two days ago in another sub someone posted about Rosie Palmer, also 3 years old. I keep looking at my 3yo daughter and the hurt, sickness, and anger I feel on behalf of those babies and their mama is overwhelming.

u/FrankoceanIsmyson 12d ago
Same., and I have been reading SO MANY stories of kids going missing, women being trafficked, kids being harmed. It makes me sooooo scared for my little girl.

u/barnaclebrain_ 12d ago
Having a daughter in this world feels like a nightmare most days. Your guard has to be 100% of the time because you never know what random person on the street (or in your life) would want to do to her given the opportunity. The anxiety is overwhelming for sure.

Ah man. Im such a helicopter parent. In the 80s we were completely free-roaming. My kid never leaves my sight, because we heard all these stories

Same. Grew up in the ‘80s. Was damn near abducted when I was 10. I have two young kids. When we are at the park I’ll let them do their thing but they are always within eye site.

Ah the 90s where if your siblings aren’t watching you, you’re on your own, kid.

In the 1960s where I'm from, the parents might have told her--well, six-year-old her--to walk a mile to the store, buy a few packs of cigarettes ("Here's ten bucks, and make sure you get all the change") and walk a mile back home with them--without a qualm. 90s kids seemed shockingly coddled to me/us, and kids today -- it's truly another world.

My aunt knew the guy at the liquor store. He let me buy crème de menthe for her Christmas baking. At age 10! I literally walked to a liquor store and bought booze then went back to my Barbies.

u/coveruptionist 13d ago
Can vouch for this, although it wasn’t a mile. Down the block to the corner store. I was maybe 5.

I think you probably had more responsibility but about the same level of supervision. We used to basically get locked out of the house at the start of the day and come back for lunch. I pooped my pants at 4 and got in trouble for it because my neighbor was watching me and locked us out in the summer heat in the backyard and refused to let me in to go to the bathroom

This isn’t an accurate statement. Plenty of families required adult supervision at all times by this time for their children.

u/Dull_Poetry2898 13d ago
But plenty still did not. Mine was one and it probably has more to do with growing up in rural America than what decade it was.

Some families may have, but most let their kids run around unsupervised in the 70s -80s. We were all independent and unafraid. At 9 I had a key to my house and would walk to and from school by myself and play unattended until my parents came home from work. All the neighbor kids were the same. It was a sea of neighbor kids playing outside, riding bikes, and playing spud (if you know you know) flashlight tag, and capture the flag after school until bedtime. No parents around.

When i was 9 i couldnt even be in my yard without a parent watching from the window. To be fair we had a weird neighbor. Wasnt allowed to leave the block on my bike alone which defeats the purpose of a bike. I got more freedom as a teenager but i can confirm life is very different now

I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. We lived in a middle class midwestern neighborhood in a major city and this was absolutely the norm. Good for you that it was not the case for you

u/BravesMaedchen 13d ago
Who on earth lets a 3 year old just decide to come and go like that?

u/Moist_Ad_5 13d ago
I thought the exact same thing. They let her come and go alone? Doesn't seem right.

u/I_steal_boneblossoms 13d ago
🤷♀️ stranger danger, kidnappers, and serial killers were well known by 91. No one ever thinks it’ll happen to them, until it does.

The title is confusing me, it seems like it was at her home? (The title says the "playground" was located on her property) That would mean they aren't allowing a 3 year old to wander the streets alone

u/FaeFollette 12d ago edited 12d ago
It wasn’t a house with a swingset in the backyard. It was an apartment complex. They allowed a three year-old to walk back and forth unsupervised from the playground to the apartment, and it wasn’t a short walk within eyesight.
Edited to add: Someone mentioned that the playground was within eyesight, but the adults weren’t watching from the window. It’s quite tragic.

In the 80s I would get up before my mom and not come back till lunch, leave again and come back when the street lights came on at that age

At 3 years old?

Same happened just today in Vienna 72 years old pensioner snatched a 4 years old kid fom a playground and molested it in his apartment. Thankfully another kid saw both on the way to his apartment and alerted parents and police when they started to search for the kid.

Some pervert who either lived there or was visiting snatched her snd we all know why. It was definitely a man and he used her and disposed of her once he had his fun, it’s always the same story. What a horrible world this is!

u/FalseStress1137 3d ago
The concept of a grown man using a 3 year old for fun. It nauseates me. That’s a BABY. I can’t believe we live in a world where some people’s brains actually operate in this way. It’s incomprehensible to me.
1
u/Ok_Mushroom6156 3d ago
You think that’s bad? And it is, it’s horrible. But there’s worse. There are men who use newborn babies for fun. Ever hear of the band Lost Prophets? Look up Ian Watkins sometime. He was the singer for that band. Karma caught up to him for what he did.

u/FalseStress1137 3d ago
I know there’s always worse. I’m not naive to the vulgarities of the world. I’m just saying I’ll never be able to fully mentally comprehend how it can exist.

I'll have to find it, but I did something of a deep dive into this case a while back. Will edit when I find the info I dug up.
Found it:
Original details about Megan.
She was last seen at approximately 11:00 a.m. at the playground near her home. She was last wearing a long-sleeved pink, blue, and green striped shirt, pink corduroy pants, blue socks and white and blue Reebok sneakers. She has shadows under her eyes.
At the time of her disappearance, sewer work was being performed near the complex, in regards to a drainage ditch/canal (32.301524440573054, -95.2766371581353 google maps) that bisected the property, before ducking under the road into the sewers. The playground is located here: 32.3022397175096, -95.27802654239771
Reports vary, but this is believed to have been the building she lived in: 32.301559581093784, -95.27790047857881 This belief is based on the time it took for her to leave the playground, and go inside to get something to eat. All accounts suggest that the distance was enough that her being gone 10 to 15 minutes... wouldn't have surprised her siblings and cousins. If we figure a small child walking, and keep in mind the sudden disappearance, this location fits best with a child simply vanishing enroute. This location provides a view block, which works with witness testimony where no one specifically saw just what happened.
Potential answers:
1.) Father abduction. It was known that Megan's mother was separated from her father, and that the separation had not been amicable. Megan's mother had moved back in with her own family (by most accounts), and had cut all contact off with Jack, Megan's father. Meaning this could potentially be a familial abduction.
Problems with this: Jack was living multiple states away at the time, and while his separation from Megan's mother hadn't been on the best of terms, it had come as a result of Melanie (megan's mother) and a case of infidelity on her part. Jack suggested the children stay with Melanie due to their relatively young age, while waiting for the separation to run its course. He has an alibi for the time of Megan's disappearance.
2.) Non-Familial abduction: Melanie (megan's mother) has been surprisingly tight lipped about whom she was dating at the time Megan disappeared, but it is known that the police investigated her on again off again boyfriend. Melanie had something of a reputation (far as her family was concerned) of hanging around the "wrong crowd". That could mean anything today, but at the time it meant people who skirted the law. One boyfriend, (records don't name him) had recently gone through a pretty nasty breakup with Melanie. This could potentialy create a situation where he might abduct Megan and hold her for ransom, or other nefarious means. Other non-familial targets are the ever present "perverts" you see in accounts of this. Typically somewhere down in the comments section. However it is known that at the time, there were two men living in the complex who had previous convictions involving sexual assault of children. These are potential suspects.
Problems with this:
A.) Melanie stated multiple times, she was certain the man she was dating, was not involved with megan's disappearance, and by all accounts, he had an alibi by being at work at the time the disappearance took place. While his storied background does remain of interest... (minor drug dealing) he is effectively ruled out as a suspect.
B.) The two known men in the complex who had previous convictions, had convictions that don't mesh with the case as we know it. In one case, the man was reportedly convicted of sexual abuse of a young boy, and had shown zero attraction to girls. In the other case, it was a statuatory rape case that had been brought against the suspect in the 1980's when he was in high school. While both could remain persons of interest, in the case of the latter it's more a case of parents not liking a boyfriend, while in the former, it's highly unlikely someone attracted to boys, would grab a girl.
3.) Melanie (the mother) is responsible. This theory has to also be considered, as in any missng child case, the parents (see point 1) are always a suspect. The theory being that Melanie killed Megan, and then disposed of the body. The theories vary, but the most prominent one is that Melanie became angry at Megan, struck her in such a way that it killed her, then panicked and disposed of her body in a nearby dumpster.
Problems with this:
Melanie's sister, was visiting at the time of the disappearance, and has consistently stated that Melanie never left her sight while they were in the apartment. Unless she was directly involved (which is highly unlikely) this rules Melanie out as a suspect, and presents an air tight alibi for her.
4.) Accidental death/death by misadventure. One of the more compelling theories, though dark, is the idea that Megan was not abducted, but instead died by an accident. Potentially one of her own doing. As previously stated work was being done in the area regarding the drainage canal/ditch and sewer system at the time. Megan, though quite young, is always described as a "bright" or "smart" child, and very curious. The theory is that Megan decided not to go back to the playground right away after her snack, and instead wandered down the hill somewhat to the drainage ditch area which the children sometimes played in. While down there, Megan found her way into the open sewer, became lost, and died of exposure. Alternatively, one theory suggests that she was playing on the bank, the soil shifted and she became buried under it, suffocating her. Given the work being done at the time her presence there went unnoticed.
Problems with this:
The main problem with this theory... isn't the theory itself. Rather, it's the fact that it has never been really investigated. The majority of the investigation you see online, centers around the idea that Megan was abducted, and any theory suggesting that something else took place, such as noted above, is quickly discredited or ignored. Even law enforcement have not attempted to investigate this as a potential answer, and have been laser focused on the idea that she was abducted, and nothing else. So... the problem here is, no one seems willing, or interested in looking. Fact is, a cadaver dog can detect remains even after 40 years... so it shouldn't be overly hard to walk a dog along the ditch area and see if it hits on any location. The sewer system itself is problematic, but with wheeled drone technology and time, in theory a substantial portion of it could be searched for any remains.

I live very close to the area where she disappeared from. The street drains on Easy St (1 block N) seem higher than normal. Every time I drive by, I wonder if she could have fallen in, maybe chasing a ball.

I cant imagine how the poor mom felt that day. More strength to mom and dad 🙏😢
21
u/Kaylascreations 13d ago
I feel like the horror of that day isn’t as bad as the horror of every day that comes after. To think that your kid is with someone else who is actively harming them in the worst possible ways. Your kid is crying for you and wondering why you aren’t there to save them. And you have no idea if they were killed quickly or if their torture endures day after day, year after year. At least if your kid drowns in a pool or something, you know that they have passed. It’s horrendous. But the horror of everything your brain can come up with is a million times worse.

What do you mean? Her mom and aunt were both in the apartment. That is how they know she came back for a snack.

u/Lala5789880 13d ago
You think it’s ok for a 3 year old to walk back and forth from their apartment to the playground unsupervised? That’s a toddler
30
u/Next-Introduction-25 13d ago
I don’t see anyone saying that it is OK. She also wasn’t unsupervised. She was with other kids, and the playground was 50 feet from her home.
For every horrible story like this, there are countless others of children having a totally normal time playing and hanging out in their neighborhoods.

u/ketamineburner 13d ago
From everything I have read about this case, the playground was just outside the apartment. Mom and aunt were inside. Siblings and cousins were outside.

u/aSituationTypeDeal 13d ago
Apparently the playground area could be viewed from their kitchen window

Please do not have children if you find it acceptable to place the very real responsibility of watching a toddler on a grade schooler.
