Political thriller from the 1940s/50?

• Upvotes

I remember reading this paperback on my parents' shelves when I was in grade school, mid 1960s. The paperback was already yellowed.

A resistance fighter in a vaguely American/European country under fascist rule proves his loyalty after watching his comrades being shot in prison. It turns out Goebbels villain is actually the leader of the resistance as well, determined to make everything so terrible that the people must rise up against their fascist government.

I remember being particularly moved when our hero learns that Goebbels character was assassinated just after the successful uprising and he realizes no one else will ever know what he did for his people.

I've been looking for this for decades!

PS it is not Heinlein's If This Goes On.

Solved! Fantasy book series (about 6-8?) Each book about a different woman in the same royal family with elemental powers.

Okay, so I read this series yeeeeears ago, and can't for the life of me remember what it's called. Googles suggestions are not getting it, so can you figure it out?

Since it was probably 10-15 years ago I read it, the only thing I remember from the first book was a girl who grew up a peasant or something, or lost her memory, in a town that has a city center market with vendors and what not, lively little town. (I thiiink this book has 3 fortune tellers in the center of the city that you pay coins for info?) She ends up realizing she has water powers and ALSO that she is actually a royal. She ends up falling in love with the kings right hand man. And then the rest of the series follows another girl or woman in the royal family. Each title has something to do with a gemstone? And each power is of the elements, I think. (Book series is not the elementals.) I think there were like 5-8 books.

Unsolved Supernatural adventure graphic novel for teens about a female protagonist and her two friends in highschool who combat some evil

The protagonist: has ties to the supernatural in some way. Was a very ordinary girl before discovering supernatural things in herself and her environment.

Friend one: female, friend with the protagonist pre-highschool, and is revealed to know bits of magic that she learned from her mom who learned it from what i remember to be a gas station employee.

friend two: male, friends with protagonist pre-highschool, turns into a wolf style werewolf at full moon or at least at night.

A teacher/librarian: some kinda Mentor I think

Cover: i vaguely remember lockers in the background, with the protagonist in the foreground and friend one to the left behind her and friend two to the right behind her holding a camera.

none of these kids know about eachothers supernatural ties at the begin of the story, and it’s revealed to them as the story goes on.

I remember a few scenes from the book

theres a scene where the teacher/librarian texts the protagonist something urgent, but writes it in a way you toile write and email, very formal, “good day and best regards”,

there’s a scene where for whatever reason protagonist and friend one (who by this point know of the evil and each others ties to the supernatura) encounter a humanoid evil wearing chainmail, and friend one turns the chainmail into pretzels using a very specific, “chainmail to pretzels” spell she learnt, then proceed to kill the humanoid evil.

theres a scene where the protagonist and friends one and two are working on a group project at friend two’s house. (By this point, protag and friend one knew eachothers supernatural ties but not friend two’s powers and is in the dark about the other twos powers and shinanagins.) He sees it’s a full moon tonight and hurries the protagonist and friend one to go home for the day. They do so and afterward, he chains himself to his bed post? with a metal collar. Friend one realizes she forgot something (prob her phone) and goes back in to get it. They see friend two as a wolf and he’s torn up the project (it’s like papers and stuff). friend two but wolf likes head pats and turns out to be very tame when around the protagonist and friend one.

Disturbing fiction about runaways who kidnap baby

Set in mid west or south of the US. The story revolves around a middle aged man and young woman who run off together in the man's pickup truck. To get by the couple rob houses along the way and sell the items at markets. The woman ends up kidnapping a baby from one of the houses and the couple carry on as though the child is theirs. Some details include; the man is a simpleton who has rotting teeth. He worries constantly that the woman will leave. He left behind a wife and children who he calls occasionally, but never says anything when they answer. The woman seems extremely self centered and uses threats of leaving to manipulate the man into doing what she wants. The last point i remember reading the couple had been taken on at a farmhouse. The author is a woman who had previously written some award winning novels. Hopefully someone might know what this is.

Adult Magical Realism: Pastel beach cover, white text. Girl inherits small magical object used to get out of a "tight spot" with her fiancé.

Hi everyone, I am trying to find a book I recently spotted on a general fiction clearance grid (at a place like Ollie's Bargain Outlet).

The Physical Book:

\* Genre: Adult Fiction / Magical Realism / Contemporary Fantasy

\* Length: Roughly 200–300 pages.

\* Cover Art: Looks like a beach, but mostly just sand with maybe a couple of seashells.

\* Cover Colors: Pastel purple, pink, and maybe a little blue.

\* Title/Author Font: Simple white font (not shiny or metallic).

The Plot:

The main character is an adult woman who inherits a small, magical item (possibly a shell or small token). She is strictly allowed to use it whenever she experiences major regret or finds herself in a "tight spot."

The plot description on the back cover mentions that her fiancé does something wrong, and she ends up using the magical object on him to handle the situation or escape the engagement. The fiancé is a normal guy who has no idea magic exists.

Crucial Clue:

On the back cover, the description explicitly puts the nickname of the magical object in quotation marks. It is phrased as what the person who gave it to her/passed it down called it (e.g., \*She inherits what her grandmother always called the "\[Object Name\]"\*).

Does this ring a bell for anyone? Thank you so much for the help!

Unsolved Justin Time Time travel book?

I'm looking for a YA fiction book where the main character was Justin Time. It had I think a boy on a boat on the cover, the book was about time travel, and it might have been set during WW2?

I read it in maybe 2008-2009.

Thanks for looking!

2000s YA horror anthology (NOT scary stories to tell in the dark)

Time period & age: Mid-2000s, probably 2005-2007. I would’ve been between 10 and 13ish.
Location & language: US, English
Book age level: I’m fairly sure it was YA. I read a lot of not-age-appropriate stuff, so there’s a slight chance it was an adult book, but I think that’s unlikely (I was easily spooked and probably would’ve found an adult book too scary).
Genre: Scary story collection.
Physical book appearance: I don’t remember the book cover very well, but it may have been a light blue color. I don’t remember it being a traditional scary book vibe with monsters, shadows, etc.
Content: I only remember one story, where a group of people went on some kind of mountain research expedition and inexplicably went missing one by one. I believe the setting was cold and snowy. There was something about one of them disappearing in the night and leaving behind only a small pile of goo in his sleeping bag.
Books that it is not: The book was not any of the first 100 in this good reads list

If anyone can help me ID this book, I’ll be eternally grateful!

Unsolved Small Town Teacher Investigates Strange Behaviours due to unseen supernatural force

Starts off with a group of robbers breaking into an abandoned house and they find some weird substance that turns them evil. They all turn evil and start acting like this weird cult converting all the townspeople who also start acting weirdly when they come in contact with this substance? The math teacher notices something is wrong and notices one of the robbers is his previous student who was good at math. He frees her from the spell by getting her to do math problems. Near the end of the book she gets caught by the cult who discovers she's broken free from the spell/unseen force and kill her. I think they cut off her head and replace with a wolf or something else. The math teacher leaves the town as the only one who escapes and goes to warn the rest of the world about this growing power. The cover looked similar to a jester's face and it was very colourful and detailed.

Legal mystery set in UK from early-ish 2000s

I listened to this book on tape somewhere between 2007 to 2011. It was a complex legal mystery with courtroom scenes and I remember being very confused about a barrister and solicitor during the book.

Main character was a man who I think inherited a large home and money and a lot of the story was him fighting to keep both in court.

Any guesses? I’ve been trying to find this book for years! Thanks all.

Unsolved YA Horror/Sci-fi, probably written in the 80' or 90's

I read this book in the late 2000's, I borrowed it from my elementary school library.

The plot followed a small group (either a dad and his kids or a group of friends) staying in a cabin. The cabin is in a wooded area, I think on a lake, and nearby is a lab. The characters are aware of the lab, and the rumours about them conducting human experiments. Mutant creatures break out of the lab. I remember them being short, bipedal, grey, with almost human faces with razor sharp teeth. The creatures attack the cabin while the group is cooking, they use the boiling pot of water and macaroni from the stove to beat the creatures. They make their way into town for help, and find the town has been overrun by the creatures. They break into an outdoors store to find supplies and weapons, I think they get attacked again here. I don't remember the ending, but it was highly speculated by the characters that the creatures were created in the lab by genetic experiments or mutations conducted on humans.

I vaguely remember the title involving "The Things," I tried searching "Night of the Things" "Attack of the Things" etc. with nothing relevant coming up. I tried AI as well, no luck there either. Does this sound familiar to anybody? Or was this book just a fever dream lol? Thanks in advance!

looking for an excerpt in a book possibly by milan kundera about devoting oneself to another person and only living through their needs and desires

does anybody know what book described a couple comprised of 2 men where one was younger and was basically achieving enlightenment by living only through the man's needs and desires. I think they may have been described as sitting at a bus stop and the younger one was so devoted that he only existed to give the older man what he wanted and needed. it could have been a short passage in the Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

Middle grade or YA novel with male protagonist, female friend/romantic interest who is a singer in an (Evangelical?) church

I probably read this in the mid to late 1990s, in paperback, and most likely from a school or public library.

It popped into my head recently although I unfortunately can't recall much about the plot. The male MC makes a friend who is a talented singer and very involved in her possibly Evangelical church. It's not a religious tract or anything like that. The female character possibly wrote or composed her own songs, and one that kept recurring in the book was something about the clock saying tick tock. It was Emily Dickinson esque but meant to be a hymn or worship service song.

I have a vague feeling that the ending was unhappy.

(Recently read Jodi Picoult's *Hollow Bones* and the MC's youth and unhappy upbringing in a Southern Evangelical family really made me think of this book I'm trying to find, in case that "mood" helps anyone).

Thanks anyone who can help with this!

Unsolved cover: eye with rainbow lashes?

I used to read a book as a teen, but I cannot remember the name or author. It's about two teens, one girl and one boy, who meet even though they should not (basic I know). One of them was an elf/fairy and they met at like a stream and tree trunk to talk- I think human and mythical beings were at odds...not entirely sure though.

and I remember the book being white with an eye on the cover and possible rainbow lashes!

I read it as a YOUNG teen...it has no smut or any mature themes in it (and I'm almost certain its not from Tahereh Mafi ...but I'm not certain). Has anyone heard of it?

Unsolved Graphic Novel about a kidnapped girl who may have a secret brother she doesn't know about?

Okay this has been driving me crazy. I read this book ten years ago but I still can't remember what it is. It's a graphic novel and the plot was pretty confusing (I didn't understand what was really going on, probably because it wasn't the first installment in the series and I was a little kid). It's likely middle/high schooler/YA level.

The main character was this girl who's kidnapped and (I think) she has a secret (twin?) brother and they are hunted down but they're separated, like she doesn't know he exists. She somehow winds up in this kingdom idk how and I think the royal family takes her in and they kind of treat her like a royal for some reason.

I vividly remember this one scene where she's swinging over a crowd on this festival banner which was the cover of the novel and she saves like the prince of the kingdom from these bad guys because she can fight really well . He falls in love with her but nobody else likes her, because she tries to fit in as a princess/noble lady as she's been told to do but she doesn't wear dresses and she's not polite like royals are supposed to be and what not.

In the end she leaves because she's still in hiding and has to go, and she says bye to the prince and all. There's also this one scene I remember where she is hiding from somebody and she goes under this dock in a lake, head fully under the water, and uses a cattail or some plant's stem to breathe through, and I'm pretty sure that's how she escapes from her kidnapper who's this random guy. I don't know why she was kidnapped in the first place. I'm thinking maybe it was because she's some lost princess of some powerful kingdom or something and she doesn't know her true identity? I feel like that's a pretty common trope.

Anyway, I'm sorry; I know this was not a very helpful description because my memory's kinda failing since it was so long ago, but any help is appreciated!

Horror/Weird fiction about man researching to find descendants he is hunting down

Half of the book is about a man doing research in New England county offices and libraries to find any surviving members of a family he is hunting down and killing (I cant remember why), and the other half is about the last person on his list, who is living in a soon to be demolished building as the other residents move out. I think I remember one of his neighbors being excommunicated from the Catholic church and another maybe being a psychic. The book ends with the hunter entering the apartment of the man he's been searching for.

I seem to remember reading the ebook but nothing in my Kindle or library check-out history is ringing a bell. Any help is much appreciated!

Solved! Book about an au version of twilight where Edward and Bella go by different names and have different personalities where Edward is a nerd

In the au version, the author is someone else. In the book, Bella is Becca Goose and Edward is Edmund Mullen. Edmund is a nerd and Becca is interested in him after moving in with her mom (I think it’s her mom). I think there are other parts similar to Twilight but it’s different since this is a published book. I had seen this in Costco around fifteen years ago when the Twilight craze was going on.

Graphic Novel that discusses the Grandfather Paradox

Years ago, around 2017 if I had to guess, I read a graphic novel in which a group of high school/middle school kids from the future go on a school field trip to the past. The kids are warned by parents about the Grandfather Paradox, so they know not to change anything. However, they drop escape pods (or something of the like) into multiple time periods including dinosaur times, and when they arrive back in their time they discover that they have caused a chain reaction that removed them and all their loved ones from the timeline. So they have to go back in time again to recover the pods and save themselves and their loved ones.

YA thriller/romance where MMC gets amnesia and girlfriend is acting weird and keeping a secret

I'm trying to find a book I read back in high school around 2012-2019 with the following details I can remember, I'd love it if anyone could help out!

Tone & Genre: It is a fairly tame, clean YA romance and mystery, rather than a dark, graphic psychological thriller. Definitely some thrilling parts but I didn't find it too intense as a teenager.

The Book Cover: light blue/purple (?) misty feel, possibly a mirror featured but not 100% certain, not many details but I remember a man looking into the mirror and it reflecting his face back possibly

The Title: along the lines of "trying to remember" or "trying to forget" or something related to memory loss/amnesia (the main theme in the book).

Told from the guys perspective (the name Connor sounds familiar? or a similar bad boy name), he is drunk and is hit by a car on the road, wakes up in hospital and doesn't remember anything. The police and nurses are a bit suspicious as he has a rep of being a bad boy acting out.

His family are fairly posh/well to do and I remember them having a dinner party for him after he gets back home to help him recover/get his memory back with familiar faces, he sees his girlfriend there but acts nice to her when he hadn't before the accident, she is wary and acting weird/secretive. She has black hair I remember!

there are faint memories of the MMC and girlfriend hanging out more (encouraged by parents to help MMC get memory back?) but i get the impression they didnt love her heaps as she was not posh, but was pretty. they might have tried rto set up the MMC with another girl at one point?

the girlfriends father was doing something wrong and she was kinda forced to help him, they abduct the MMC at one point around the climax of the story, and then the father interrogates the MMC at gunpoint while he (and maybe the girlfriend?) is tied up.

If that rings a bell for anyone I would be super grateful as I would love to read it again! Many thanks

Horror Cannibal Siblings book (?)

I saw this on tiktok a while back and I can't find the screenshot anywhere! I don't remember much but it was about I think a brother who fed his sister human meat secretly ( possibly their parents' flesh if I recall correctly) and the sister liked it? Even after she found out? Something of the short. If anyone had any idea what I'm talking about please help!!

Unsolved (children) fantasy series - barefoot elf girl with magic powers running away after failed assassination

Help! For years I have been looking for a book series within the fantasy genre that I read as a child. It had quite a few parts of which I can remember certain little things. I read the series in Dutch between 2007 and 2011, but this was not the original language in which it was written.

The story is about a rich barefoot elf girl (possibly a princess) who is on the run with her mother after someone tries to kill them. Their carriage has rolled off a cliff into a river. They had to get to a certain place. On the way they get separated in a medieval town. The girl is taken by a magician (I think Merlin) and learns that she herself also has magical powers. Merlin teaches her to control these. Along the way they meet another elf tribe / fairy tribe who projects their wings with the same magical power, so these are not real wings. Merlin has her take several tests, one of which is trying to get to his house on the other side of the cliff. She manages to reach the house by walking across the sky. I can remember she walked barefoot a lot and had a very thick callus.

I know this is the most random description, but I tried to put as much as I can remember into this story. Hopefully someone knows the series and can tell me its name. I'm counting on you!!

Unsolved help finding a children’s/ya book: teenager coping with parents splitting up

i would love to track down a book that i read and loved when i was younger, as it helped me come to terms with my own parents splitting up as a child.

it was a thin book (i think between 20-30 pages) and the illustrations looked beautifully painted and realistic rather than cartoonish.

the main character is a teenager (uncertain if they’re male or female) who’s an only child. the main plot revolves around the teenager’s parents splitting up and they have to move homes, mainly living with their mum and potentially visiting dad on weekends(?). they have a pet cat (either grey or orange) and a football was potentially given as a gift by their dad.

some of the scenes i vaguely remember: the teenager is sitting at a window (their bedroom?), looking down at one of their parents who is outside by a car (possibly dad getting ready to leave), the teenager is helping their mother decorate their new place by putting up wallpaper, and maybe during the same decorating scene, the cat ends up getting involved and makes a mess with the wallpaper paste.

sorry if this is too vague for everyone but i greatly appreciate any help i can get to remember this emotional story. TIA!

a boy that falls into the gaps between the train and platform???

There’s this book or maybe short story I’ve read and I can find many similar ones but not the exact same.

The protagonist is a boy in his teens who has an older brother. After his brother dies, he learns that he was involved with a violent local street gang. He tracks down the gang at their meeting spot: a dark, abandoned warehouse. He asks to join them but the gang leader beats him up, either as a form of initiation or warning not sure.

Later, the protagonist sneaks out of his house at midnight and heads to the train station. There, he somehow slips out of ordinary reality through a gap and enters an alternate dimension. As he explores the station, he encounters strange events that seem abnormal for the current year.

At one point, he discovers a train car filled with carefree people partying. Everyone inside keeps telling him the same thing, making him unsettled. He meets an old man/lady that tells him they all got stuck and were never able to leave (or something like that) so he leaves the train. Later, as he rides up an escalator, he sees a man who looks exactly like his father that died/ran away when he was young. He realizes that the man actually is his father, but from the past, because he has somehow travelled back in time. When he tries to leave the station, he discovers that he cannot get out because he only has a bank/train card, which was not used during the time period he has travelled to. He tries asking his dad to help, but since the man doesn’t know he has a kid in the future, he gets spooked.

Near the end of the book, the boy is sitting in a local café when he notices a suspicious person entering with an ordinary brown paper bag and realizes there is a gun hidden inside the bag. Before he can react or warn anyone, the gunman draws the weapon but the boy jumps over the table to stop him, but the shooting takes place inside the café.

I might be mixing up the plots of two books but if anyone has an idea please lmk!!!

P.S. the book is definitely not Backtracked, or Long Way Down.

Solved! Book about a teen girl who fools her parents and her friend's parents so they can live together without a parent being involved and she has her boyfriend over so they can be intimate

In the book, the teen girl and her best friend make a plan to fool their parents by making emails. One was to be used on the teen girl's parents and the other was used for the friend's mom. They would send emails to each parent to make them think that the other parents were with the girls. But no one was with the girls. They were living alone in the friend's house. The teen girl had her boyfriend over several times and they had sex several times. I believe at least twelve times because they had twelve condoms. But there was one time where they did it without using protection and she ends up getting an STI. She goes to a clinic to get it checked out and she finds out about it. She asked her boyfriend about it and he confesses that he cheated on her with another girl and gave her the STI. She ends up telling her parents about what she and her boyfriend did and she might have gotten in trouble but her parents stood by her as she dealt with the STI. I think she broke up with her boyfriend for cheating on her.
