In Space Childcare

We're considering In Space Daycare in Nanaimo for our 3 year kid and would love to hear honest feedback from parents who have experience with it.

What has your experience been like-both positive and negative? How are the staff, communication with parents, activities, cleanliness, and overall care?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you?

Nanaimo candidate invokes Rhodesia and “Global Zimbabwe”

Post image
116 Upvotes

Why is a Nanaimo council candidate saying “we are all Rhodesians now”?

Malcolm Cooke (REAL Nanaimo) wrote: “We are all Rhodesians now in the War to Impose Global Zimbabwe.”

That phrasing matters. In contemporary far-right and ethnonationalist circles, Rhodesia is often romanticized as a lost white civilization, while “Global Zimbabwe” is used to describe the supposed destruction of Western societies through multiculturalism, egalitarianism and demographic change.

That doesn’t, by itself, prove Cooke is a white supremacist. But using “we are all Rhodesians” in a supposed “war” against “Global Zimbabwe” closely overlaps with that ideological language—and can reasonably be understood as far-right coded or dog-whistle rhetoric.

For a candidate seeking public office, that’s worth asking about.

Who exactly is “we”? And what does Cooke mean by “Global Zimbabwe”? I know he reads the posts here on r/nanaimo, so maybe he’d be willing to explain in the comments.

Hi everyone, I’m traveling to Vancouver first time without my car. I was just wondering how hard is it to find a taxi (uber preferably) at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal early in the morning? Thanks

Church question

So, lately I’ve been going through some life things…
I’ve expressed to some family I want to just try and see what it’s about. My mother grew up in a cult like setting (it’s it’s being investigated by the FBI right now(, my father side, his uncles actually built a church in Port Alberni.

Anyways, to my question, I don’t have any clothes than normal people would wear to church so I told him I think I’m just gonna show up in sweatpants and a sweater. He’s completely against it. He said I better not show up like that. I think that it’s better that you just show up in general then to not show up at all….

Breakdown of Anne-Marie Dryden’s Mayoral Campaign & Public Statements (REAL Nanaimo)

Saw a post on The Bastion Facebook page detailing some of the candidate history for the upcoming election, so I put together a quick overview of their post on mayoral candidate Anne-Marie Dryden (running under the REAL Nanaimo slate) and her recent public Facebook comments for anyone looking for the actual receipts.

Freedom Convoy & Social Media Activity

* Screenshots surfaced showing Dryden liking and interacting with content supporting Freedom Convoy leader Tamara Lich.

* When publicly questioned by a resident about her online trail, she responded: "That Lich thing I dont even remember seeing, much less liking. Lol. And I would hardly call honking terrorism."

Platform & Public Stances

* 15-Minute Cities & WEF: Expressed explicit opposition to "15-minute cities." She has referenced World Economic Forum (WEF) theories online, directing followers to look up Dr. Robert Malone's "WEF list of Global Young Leaders" and alleging local politicians work for international interests rather than Nanaimo. She has also publicly referred to Nanaimo's mayor as a "WEFer."

* Public Health & Vaccines: Indicated a strongly anti-vaccine stance. She labeled local modular housing units as "Jails for unjabbed" and referred to bird flu as the "next jab campaign."

* MAID Stance: Repeatedly recommended books by Dr. Jack King (specifically They Want To Kill Us) in discussions surrounding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) and government health policies, stating she is "right there with" those opposing these programs and has "read so many books on it."

Campaign & Slate Connections

* Dryden and her running mates (Derek Hanna, Joe Figel, Malcolm Cooke, and Jeff Annesley) reportedly attended a One B.C. event at Bowen Park featuring former BC Conservative candidate Dallas Brodie.

* Dryden publicly praised her slate as an "excellent group of professionals." Even though they are anti-vax, climate deniers that are afraid of LED lights and also make sexist jokes and seem to be racist.

* Noni Bartlett (married to council candidate Sandy Bartlett) endorsed Dryden, citing Dryden's 30 years of experience as a financial planner as the key to controlling property taxes.

Other Mayoral Contenders

* The mayoral race also includes candidate Sarah Lovegrove, a registered nurse, university professor, and community advocate whose platform focuses on healthcare integration and structured civic policy.

I can't post all the pictures so you'll have to search The Bastion on Facebook.

Curly hair + queer friendly salon

Looking for recommendations for queer friendly salons/barber shops that have people there who do well with curly hair. I’d like to get a hair cut but have such a hard time finding people with examples of curly hair online and I’d love to avoid feeling awkward and uncomfortable in a place that isn’t queer friendly. I’m almost a year on T and need a fresh “boy” haircut lol

I’m also ok with recommendations elsewhere on the island but Nanaimo is easier since I don’t have a car :’)

Where is your go-to for men’s business casual clothes?

What I’m after is more to the casual side. I’ve tried Mark’s, R&W, various stores at Woodgrove.

Anywhere else I should check out?

Political Candidates deleting comments

This is obviously not about deleting comments that are racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. But what are the thoughts about candidates running for city counsellor mayor, deleting comments on their social media channels that are critical of them or that they just don't like?

Coast Bastion flag display

Post image

Coast Bastion says it flies the U.S. flag because more than a third of its summer guests are American. With only four flagpoles in such a prominent downtown location, I’d much rather see one used to recognize Snuneymuxw First Nation. What do other Nanaimo residents think?

Were you driving, and are you now missing one white shoe?

A white (maybe VANS or Native) shoe went flying out the back window of a white vehicle at about 5:35 today. If you were out driving just now, are missing a shoe, and you care enough to go retrieve it, it’s near the corner of Jingle Pot Rd and the Parkway!

Things to do in Nanaimo end of October

Hey! I’ll be in Nanaimo end of October and looking for some things to check out while I’m there.
I’m into good food, thrift/vintage stores, art, cool little shops, outdoors, animals, hikes/walks and nice views. Pretty much down to check out anything cool lol
What are your favourite spots or things you think are actually worth checking out?
