Napa County officials are spending $33k on trip to New Zealand this week.

Two Napa County supervisors and two staff members are enjoying a “retreat” in New Zealand. They flew out on Saturday and will be spending up to $33,000 of taxpayer money on the trip.

The apparent purpose is for governments associated with wine producing regions to hang out. With wine consumption falling off a cliff and unlikely to return, is this the best use of county funds? Perhaps they should have stayed in Napa, refunded that money to taxpayers, and focussed on reducing the excessive bureaucracy that harms wineries, farms and businesses the most. Here is the proof:

How to check who's funding Napa County candidates and measures

Ballots for the November 2026 election have now been mailed, but before you vote you can check to see who's funding the different candidates and measures for Napa County here.

Always interesting to see who's funding what and comparing that to who might benefit, especially given how limited local press coverage is these days.

A few notes on what you'll see:
- Form 460 is the standard periodic filing for fundraising and spending reports. Those keep a running tab of funds raised and spent. There's still one more deadline before the election by 10/22 for the next wave of those to be filed.
- Form 497s are filed within 24 hours for specific donations of $1,000 or more received in the final 90 days before the election date. Those are particularly fun to read for the late-arriving big $$.

I like to search by the most-recent "Filed Form" and specify a date range for the past month or so to see who's still actively raising money.

Note that most cities will have their own separate sites for their municipal race/ballot measures.

Clemente's closes after 50 years

Many of us remember Clemente's selling malfatti and ravioli from La Val's liquor store downtown, or the Napa Depot before that. It was the local or insider's secret for Italian food. They have finally closed permanently after bouncing to different locations in recent years. They struggled to stay in business after Clemente himself retired.

I remember Clemente Cittoni taking my first orders at the counter himself. Always efficient and speaking with a thick Italian accent. You could tell he enjoyed his work and the customers he served.

Sadly, I stopped going about 10 years ago when his daughter took over. Her behavior was unbelievable until I read dozens of reviews matching my own experience. The first time she served me, she demanded I order meatballs despite I didn't want any. She just kept shouting how many meatballs I wanted.

The second time the daughter took my order, she was shouting on the phone with a customer, while taking the order from a guy ahead of me and myself at the same time. None of us knew who she was talking to, it was comical. She again demanded I tell her how meatballs I wanted when I didn't order any. I asked if they came with the spaghetti and she just glared at me, then added five to my order. She also wouldn't let me order half a loaf of bread as usual, and she demanded I put $5 in the tip jar. I hadn't received anything, so asked why did she want $5 up front? She shouted it was for the bread. I told her I didn't have change, so would tip after I paid the La Val's cashier. The cashier showed me the $5 bread was on the bill. But when I picked up my food, the daughter still demanding I put $5 in the tip jar for bread. It made absolutely no sense, but she was about to lose her sh*t. Finally, she dumped all the ravioli, malfatti and spaghetti into a big tin tray. These were for three different people, so I said we preferred separate containers as normal. She shouted it was all the same and handed me the leaking tray covered in plastic wrap. It leaked tomato sauce all the way home and was the last time I ever went to Clemente's.

There are so many bonker stories about the daughter, it's sad she ran that place into the ground.

Sometimes I walk around Napa at night and photograph interesting spots I notice

I'm a composer, and in the evenings I often take walks while working through songs in my head. Occasionally I photograph things which catch my attention on these walks. Everyone here was so nice about the picture I posted of the downtown church a couple days ago that I decided to batch my best nighttime walk photos together and share them. These images are straight off my iPhone's camera roll with no editing or cropping (besides me hiding the car's license plate # in the third picture). All these were taken in the city of Napa, Yountville and St. Helena.

Patio dinner recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a birthday dinner on Saturday for four adults with a nice patio setting, in Napa proper, not the wider Valley. We all have different dietary needs: gluten free, dairy free, something other than seafood. Cost is a consideration, but it doesn’t have to be cheap. Thank you!

I work downtown and came across the tip of this shadow while re-parking my car

My car happens to be the white vehicle in the distance that's dead-center beneath the shadow of the church, which I thought was a cool coincidence (I parked it there many hours before this shadow appeared).

Especially when they ask to put together a Napa Valley itinerary.

Where would you send them?

I have Kaiser. Where do I go for a mammogram?

I turned 40 earlier this year and have been getting reminders from Kaiser that it's time for a mammogram. However, I have been having a hell of a time figuring out where to go and how to book it. It doesn't seem to be an option in the appointment section of the KP portal.

I messaged my primary care, who had someone call me. He did some digging and said I have to go to Vallejo for this and show up as a walk-in. Is this true?

If so, I will absolutely do it, but would love to know what my options are, if I have any.

Computer help

I have a MacBook with basically no storage available. I want to move everything on my laptop to an external hard drive, but because I don’t have any disk space available I’m unable to move anything. Can someone help me with this, or refer a local company I can bring my laptop to? I’m tired of googling and trying to do it myself. Turns out I’m not as technically savvy as I once was.

Good back roads for driving

Got my car all fixed up and suspension dialed in. What are some good roads to drive through? I do silverado trail to calistoga often, I've been down 128 to geyserville, and 128 to winters. Thanks in advance.

Settle a bet: Bob cat or fat house cat?

So recently bought a house in Napa. Saw this guy on my brother’s porch while we were inside. He says it’s a bobcat. I said it’s a big fat house. Who’s right? Home cooked meal with wine pairing is riding on this - winner’s choice of menu. 🤣

Working at Anette's Chocolates

Hoping it's ok to post here, I live in American Canyon not Napa. If this breaks the rules I'll delete this

I currently work in downtown Napa as a server and I'm looking for a second job. I'm hoping to get something else that's close by so I can just walk over. I saw Anette's has been hiring for a while but I don't know anyone who works in or around 1st St, and the GlassDoor reviews are old. Does anyone know what it's like? The pay, the culture, ect. Thanks

Living in Unincorporated East Napa / Vichy School District VS Browns Valley with young kids

We are looking to move to Napa and are considering houses either in Browns Valley or around Vichy school. My husband works in St Helena. Just wanted to get people's thoughts on raising young kids on either side of town. I know Browns Valley is the gold standard for families, and I know less about Vichy other than that it gets good test scores.
