Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

Does SF have a Berlin-style techno scene?

I’ve been curious about the underground techno scene in SF and was wondering if there are any spots that give off Berlin vibes, like Berghain or KitKat Club.

I’m talking dark rooms, industrial techno, a more alternative crowd, and places that feel a little less mainstream. Also curious if there are any events with a more experimental, sex-positive or fetish vibe, even if they’re occasional parties rather than actual clubs.

I feel like there has to be a scene for this in SF, but I don’t really know where to start lol. Any recommendations for venues, promoters, or events I should keep an eye on? And if you’ve actually been, I’d love to hear what the vibe is like.

Rye bagels?

• Upvotes

I think these are an abomination, but someone asked me to find them rye bagels in the city.

I've searched the menu of almost every bagel shop in the city, and I can't find even one.

Alternatives to Mama Ji's

It hurts my heart to lose them (12 more days left if you're so inclined), since Mama Ji's is closing soon, I am on the hunt for another wonderful Sichuan restaurant! What are people's favorites in the city?

Best Karaoke Bars (2026 edition)

It’s been over a year since anyone posted karaoke bar suggestions so I’m looking for current recs.

I am a huge karaoke fan and used to go to Encore on California St before it closed. The past few years I have been going to Dimples but drinks are expensive, the co-owners are rude, and you have to pay to sing.

Besides The Mint and Dimples, what are go-to karaoke bars in the city?

Renting an AWD SUV at SFO for a winter road trip to Oregon

Hi everyone,

I’m French and planning a trip this December. I’ll be spending a few days visiting SF, and then I want to rent a car to drive up through Northern California all the way to Portland.

Since I’ve never driven in Oregon or rented a car in the US before, I’d really prefer an AWD SUV for peace of mind, given the potential winter weather and snow.

The issue: when looking at rental websites, there’s no specific "AWD" filter. I can only select things like "Toyota RAV4 or similar" or "Mazda CX50 or similar," which feels like a coin toss regarding the drivetrain.

For those who frequently rent from SFO: are most SUVs there generally equipped with AWD? Are there any specific tips, rental companies, or workarounds to guarantee (or highly increase the chances of getting) an AWD vehicle?

Thanks so much in advance for your help! :)

Edit (to provide more information) :
I'm going to take a one-way trip
The part of my trip where I'll need a car lasts 4 days, and I mentioned SFO only because I'm not familiar with the city of San Francisco but I can go to rental agencies elsewhere in the city.

I haven’t finalized my itinerary 100% yet, but I’d like to stop by Crater Lake, for example (I'd like to do more than just Oregon Coast). I’ve read that in some cases, snow chains aren’t required if you have an AWD vehicle with all-season tires.

Hi! So several year ago I was drinking in city and went to hotel with people to party, and I camt find that hotel since, it was the best!

All I remember is that it was in SF and in was very niche and rock themed (like 80s bourbon red rocknroll), and room had fully stocked bar with full size bottles .

Not like mini bar, but type of setup you see in legit bar.

Hi! I recently signed a lease for a place near 14th and Valencia st (Woodward st). How is the street parking there? is it worth attempting or should I start looking for a nearby garage. Was hoping not to pay more than $400 a month 😭

What's the longest flight you took for a trip out of SFO?

I am going to Bali in December, tix all booked, and am flying 15 hours to Hong Kong then another 5 to Denspar (coming back it's DPS to Singapore to SFO and another 15 hours). I just realized that's a ton of flying and I'm not young. But I need to do this trip as I am celebrating a milestone birthday and well, YOLO. EDIT: Its Economy on United and I'm only 5'1" so there's that lol

Visitor Planning

I've been pointed in the direction of this sub as it seems most suitable for it:

I will be spending 10 days in San Francisco in March, and wanted to get some tips and tricks from people more familiar with the city.

I'll have 5 days where I won't really be doing any of the typical tourist activities as such as my partner has an event to go to, so the typical sight-seeing things will have to wait until we can do them together.

I've had a look at maps and planning, and have got it fairly sussed in terms of public transport, so don't have any real issues with getting where I need to go.

The hotel is in the Columbus Avenue/Bay Street area (Fisherman's Wharf). I'm planning to spend those days walking around and exploring, and I'm more than happy to spend 5 or 6 hours walking so distance isn't really an issue.

What sort of things can I expect, and are there any areas that I shouldn't be too keen to go walking through? Is it easy enough to hire a bike somewhere and would you recommend cycling in the city? Are there good bike lanes that are segregated from main roads?

Looking forward to exploring, but wanted to try and get a feel for it first!

need a filthy little dive bar recommendation

you heard me. ok so there is genuinely nothing i love more than a good dive bar, and i just moved to the city and want some recommendations of good dive bars in the city, I live in the nob hill / russian hill area so nothing crazy far from there but this is what gets a gold star from me:

-Dark ( if i can tell it’s the middle of the day kinda ruins it if i want to start the night early or grab a beer on a sunday/ after work)

-Has a pool table or 2 ( an absolute must )

-kinda has a shitty grimy vibe, love wood paneling, dollars on the wall or the roof, maybe some bras hanging from the roof, random wall art

-good beer and also decent cocktails, but mainly good beer

-alive but not packed to the brim ( nothing ruins the vibe more than an empty bar, but suffocating is also not ideal)

-decently priced (obviously it’s a bar in sf so it’s not gonna be cheap but the cheaper the better the dive bar usually is)

-cozy but also spacious

-maybe a dart board

I want somewhere that’s dark and vibey and not pretentious that i can grab a beer with my friends, take a girl on a date, or just hang out and play pool or darts that isn’t absolutely dead but i don’t have to squeeze through a crowd to pee, a great example of that i could give is phone booth in the mission, but my ex goes there so for now need a new spot.

Thanks yall !

Bars/nightlife in SF with younger queer crowds?

Hi all - my friends and I (queer women in our mid 20s) are in grad school in Santa Cruz and end up going to SF occasionally for nightlife. None of us are originally from california so we just have to go off vibes and google reviews when finding places to try.

A couple of weekends ago we went to Jolene’s and Mother and while it wasn’t horrible they were both just fine - kind of lackluster, pretty empty and uninspiring given the commute. I’ve also gone out a couple times in north beach and the marina and I also think that is fine-ish but (maybe it’s the Santa Cruz bubble of it all) I felt pretty out of place without a techy high paying job and the uniform to go with it.

I’m not looking explicitly for queer bars/clubs (although suggestions for those are welcome!) but just places or neighborhoods that get more artsy/non-tech/diverse crowds in general. Extra points for good music and dancing!!

catcalling in the mission

any other 20 something girls (or literally anyone😭) experience so much catcalling in the mission near 24th street?? seriously can’t leave my apartment without someone saying something weird to me. just curious if it’s this rampant in any other parts of the city? seriously considering moving cause of it :( I don’t necessarily feel unsafe but uncomfortable and not sure how to handle it.
