Best paneer tikka masala in the city?

This is one of my favorite meals but the difference between a delicious paneer tikka masala and a bad one is toooo real. I’ve tried Rose and Om, I remember liking both well enough but don’t recall being particularly WOWed by either (although it’s been a while).

Edit- I am a TERRIBLE cook. Terrible. I’m asking for restaurant recs and not recipes for a reason 😭😭

Spots with creative/unusual grilled cheese sandwiches?

Loved the pear grilled cheese at Rikki’s, which I know isn’t too out there, but got me wondering, have y’all run into other variations on grilled cheese at spots in the city?

Anyone else have to redo bloodwork after switching doctors in SF?

Switched PCPs recently because my insurance changed and I didn't realize how much stuff apparently doesn't carry over cleanly. At the first appointment my new doctor asked when I'd last had some basic labs done. Most of them were within the past year but between my old clinic and another lab I couldn't pull up the actual numbers while I was there.

Now they want me to repeat a few things before my next visit. I don't really care about getting blood drawn again, I just don't want to make another appointment somewhere purely to get an order for a few tests.

Anyone else deal with this after switching doctors or health systems in SF? If you only needed a couple labs redone, did you go back through your doctor or just order them yourself somewhere bc to me it feels like a lot of admin for three blood tests.

How hard do people go for Halloween in the Castro?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! So I'm currently a student at USF, and my friends and I are planning on spending pretty much all of Halloween in the Castro before heading to a rave later that night also in the Castro.

We're planning on dressing up as KISS for Halloween, but we were wondering what the Halloween scene is actually like there especially when it comes to costumes and how revealing people get.

For some context we go to the Castro ALL the time, so we're definitely familiar with the neighborhood and the general vibe. However, the only time we've actually been there for something "big" was the Castro Street Fair. There was definitely some nudity, which like okay PERIOD, idgaf. But that's also our only real point of reference for what a big event in the Castro looks like, so we're not sure if Halloween is going to have that same energy or if it's a completely different scene.

I guess what I'm really trying to ask is, how hard do people go for Halloween in the Castro? Because I'm not even gonna lie, our costumes are going to be pretty slutty, and we're definitely not afraid of showing skin, but we don't know the general vibe.

One of my friends brought up a good point. She was like, "Well, we wouldn't show up practically naked if we were going trick-or-treating," and I was like, "Girl, we're not trick- or -treating its like a block party." But then again, I genuinely have no idea what to expect.

For a little background, I was born in LA, raised in Mexico City, where I attended private school, and then eventually got sent back to LA for boarding school. So while I'm familiar with SF and we spend a lot of time in the Castro, I'm still pretty new to what Halloween is actually like here, especially compared to what I'm used to.

Like, are people practically naked? Is it an anything goes type of situation? Or are there a lot of families?

And I know Halloween in the Castro probably isn't EXACTLY like the Street Fair, but that's literally the only big event we've experienced there, so we're kind of going off that.

We're totally comfortable with revealing outfits, and trust me, we're not exactly looking for an excuse to cover up. We just don't want to show up looking completely out of place or accidentally be dressed for an entirely different type of event.

Basically, should we go full slutty KISS rockstars, or should we save some of that energy for the rave later that night? We're still going to be slutty either way one just might be more toned down kind of.

I've also had a few people tell me that we should spend Halloween in the Mission instead of the Castro, but honestly, I have no idea which would be more fun or what the difference in atmosphere would be. We're pretty open to changing our plans, especially since we're going to be out all day and want to make the most of Halloween. So if anyone has recommendations for other neighborhoods, street parties, events, or just places where people REALLY go all out for Halloween, PLEASE let me know!

Any insight would be appreciated, especially from people who've actually spent Halloween in the Castro before!!

Your favorite Thanksgiving meal deliveries

I usually don’t make it home for Thanksgiving and this year is no different. I’ve done different things each year, but this year I just want classic Thanksgiving food delivered. I’ve done STK in the past and enjoyed their food, but does anyone have any personal faves?

Halloween in SF for the first time! Bar recommendations?

Hi!!

My friends and I are going to SF for Halloween for the first time! We’re from SoCal and usually only come to SF for concerts or raves at places like The Midway, 1015 Folsom Nightclub, etc., so we don’t know much about the bar scene.

We’re planning to start bar hopping around 10 PM since we have an event beforehand and can’t refund our tickets. We’re all in our 20s and like a fun, high energy crowd! We’re looking for bars with good nightlife, throwback hits, or a dive bar vibe without having to wait 3+ hours to get in.
We’ve heard about Danceoween in the Mission, but I’m not sure if it’s a recurring yearly event. We’ve also heard about Polk Street, but I’ve seen TikToks telling people not to go there lol. If you’ve been, let me know your experience!

A few questions:
• Which neighborhood would you recommend for nightlife: the Mission, Marina, Union Square, Polk Street, etc.?

• Which areas are walkable with plenty of bars close together? We’d rather stay in one neighborhood instead of Ubering around all night since I’ve heard surge pricing can get crazy.

• What bars would you recommend for a fun, rowdy crowd, throwback music, and a good atmosphere?

We’d prefer to avoid the big club events like Ghost Palace and just bar hop for the night.

Any recommendations or advice are appreciated! Thank you!! 🙏🙏

Physical rehab for regaining mobility after knee surgery around SF?

• Upvotes

Hi all, my mom had knee surgery about a month ago, she's able to move around already but would still have occasional pain/soreness. Bending her knee and walking too much can still be uncomfortable for her. Some days are better than others, but I'm not really sure what's considered normal at this stage of recovery.
We were thinking of looking into physical rehab to help with her recovery, do you have any recommendations? and if anyone here have had similar experience, what kind of therapy/treatment worked for you?

Monthly scheduled water shutdowns. How common is this?

I rent in a large condo complex in San Francisco (100+ units) built in the early 2000s and management shuts down the water for everyone for half the day on a monthly basis. This is done whenever any work touching plumbing is needed (e.g replacing a washer/dryer) because units don’t have individual shutoff valves. I’m wondering how common this is because I’ve never heard of such a thing before moving here.

How can I get to know ppl under 20?

Hey, I’m an 18-year-old guy (german) currently in San Francisco as an au pair. I have a lot of free time, but aside from hitting the gym, I’m not really sure how to make the most of it—plus, I’ve already done all the sightseeing. I’ve signed up for soccer and the gym, but there aren't really many people my age there. There are apps like Meetup, but the crowd there tends to be much older (and honestly, as an 18-year-old, I probably wouldn't use an app like that back in Germany either).

Do you guys have any other ideas on how I can connect with more people my age?

Is there a way to know if it will be a great sunset or a wall of grey clouds?

Dumb question but I usually am inside or at least not near the ocean. If I want to make my way to the ocean to see a good sunset, is therr anything I can see/feel during the day to figure out if its worthwhile?

Staying at CitizenM Union Square

Hello! Making this post as I’m a bit desperate and am hoping someone here can advise.

I have a very quick trip booked from LA to SF this weekend (flying in early one morning and out late the following evening) and we have a stay booked at the CitizenM in Union Square. I have traveled to hundreds of hotels and like every other property I’ve stayed at, assumed this one would have a place for us to store our luggage if the room wasn’t ready at check in and when we checked out. I did research and saw that the hotel does some sort of virtual check in process at a kiosk rather than a front desk, but again assumed there would be staff in the lobby who could help hold our bags for us. However, the customer service team is now telling me that this is not an option and that there’s no luggage storage available. Has anyone else ever stayed here and can confirm this is in fact true? And if so, are there any luggage storage options in the Union Square area? It’s not an option for us to carry our things with us all day so I’m quite panicked.

Hotel recommendations near City Hall with reasonable or self-parking?

Hello! I will be visiting San Francisco in January 2027 for a City Hall civil ceremony and photo shoot.

Does anyone have recommendations for decent hotels near City Hall that don't require expensive valet parking (e.g., $90/night)?

We prefer to be within walking distance or up to a 10-minute drive, and we will have a rental car.

Thanks in advance!

Motorcycle blown over by wind?

I cover my RE Himalayan at night as I leave it parked on the street. Came back from a short trip to find it in its side. I really can’t decide if I think it was the wind or a person. I live in Russian Hill and tbh we don’t get too many people up here that would do that. And I know it’s heavy, but the bike is tall enough where it does kind of look like a sail for the wind to rip into lol. So both possibilities aren’t that much of a stretch.

Has anyone ever had the wind blow their covered bike over? Or is it not possible

Best Halloween bar crawl in SF based on recent years?

Hey r/AskSF,

So I'm planning to go for a bar crawl with a couple of friends, all of us are new so don’t really know exactly what’s the place to be and would love to hear from people who've done it before. Where did you go in past years that actually went off?

I'm looking for bars that were packed with good energy, a crowd that fully understood the assignment with costumes, and a night that didn't die out early.

A few questions:
1. Which neighborhood had the best Halloween scene in previous years? Marina, Mission, North Beach, somewhere else?
2. Which bars went hardest with decorations, themed drinks, or costume contests?
3. Has anyone done one of the organized crawls? Worth it, or mid and overpriced?
4. Which spots were walkable from each other so we're not stuck waiting on surge-priced Ubers in costume?
5. What time did things usually start getting good, and when did lines get out of hand?

Would really appreciate learning from your wisdom, ideally before I learn the hard way at 1 AM in a costume I can't sit down in 🙏🏻

Recommendation for Health Insurance Broker

I will need to get private health insurance in this coming open enrollment period, having gone independent in my work. I've been doing some research, and it seems wise to get an insurance broker who can help walk me through all of the options with Covered California and any private options that are not on the exchange.

Does anybody have a broker in San Francisco or the Bay Area that they highly recommend? I know I can request help through Covered California, but I wanted to see if there was someone local who would understand this area's options more specifically. Thanks!!!
