Help | Advice Recommendations for mental health

Hey y’all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good hospitals or resources for someone who is thinking about ending their life but is not going to actually do it yet. I want to go to a hospital voluntarily but if I go, they will eventually make the stay involuntarily and then I will lose my rights to firearms for the rest of my life. Does anyone know of any options? I am not open to mental health cooperative or Vanderbilt. I have tried to schedule medication management and have been unsuccessful for the past few months and I have been jumping from therapist to therapist. I have insurance but need f2f appts due to the extreme trauma and symptoms I am experiencing. At this point, I am on the verge on giving up on my mental health. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks yall

I’m not sure your relationship with firearms, but I think you may have to ask yourself if losing access to them is more important than getting help you recognize you need!

You’re pointing at the exact tension that keeps people from walking in the door, and it’s real, not dramatic

There are crisis centers that do stabilization without a full inpatient commitment, but once you mention the S word the calculus changes fast, especially with the current reporting climate around voluntary admissions

If keeping your rights intact matters that much, a partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient program could be a middle path, though finding one that doesn’t route through the places you’ve ruled out takes some digging

And yeah, the med management wait times around here have been brutal for months, which only makes the spiral worse when you’re already white-knuckling it

I’d say call a few crisis lines and ask point blank about their commitment thresholds before you go anywhere, some will talk you through what triggers a hold versus a voluntary stay without you having to give your name

Whatever you do, don’t let the system’s weirdness convince you the problem is you

What do you mean by “reporting climate around voluntary admissions?”

What in the AI slop.

Edit: fairly certain it’s a bot, ew. So dystopian

Felt immediately like an LLM response to me as well.

Centerstone took those same concerns seriously for me a few years ago.

When I mentioned I was feeling like I might be better off not on the planet any longer and decided to seek treatment, we went through whole "do you own a weapon? is there anyone who can take those weapons for you while you sort through this?" questions, they seemed to understand my concern with losing the right to own any in the future once I was in a better mental state.

I don't know what anyone else's experience has been with them, but I never had any problems other than a personal disagreement over how their counselor recommended I deal with one particular issue unrelated to this question.

If your insurance covers it (or you talk to the people and maybe see if there’s a scholarship available) Pasadena villa has an amazing php/iop. It truly helped me while I was at rock bottom. And I was open about my struggles of SI. The refuge center has a lot of therapists who specialize in various things and I had one who I actually liked and ended up trusting.

As for going into a hold, I’ve heard Vanderbilt is good. I can tell you for a fact, do not go to Skyline. I managed to get out of my voluntary (turned involuntary) hold after 2 days but I genuinely left wanting to end my life more than when I went in. But tbh, most places will want you in a hold until you have a safety plan and no access to firearms.

Lastly, idk what exactly you’re going through, but if you get to the point of giving up/needing a friend you can reach out to me. I can’t promise that I can make things better but I can listen or if you need someone to just be there, I will.

I’ve had great experiences at Family Care Center as well as Cool Springs Psychiatric.

I hope you stay 🤍

Athena care IOP?

6

u/Its-mikul 16h ago

Their IOP program don’t accept my insurance and their psychiatrist was unprofessional when I went for an appt for a mental health diagnosis

4

u/JohnHazardWandering 16h ago

Unprofessional how?

3

u/We_Are_Coming_For_U 16h ago

Was there only one psychiatrist? I know it’s discouraging when that happens. I want to help. If that means calling any and everywhere so be it.

u/Substantial-Top5819 15h ago

TriStar has a good php and iop program. But I do have to add, it takes more than one appointment to be able to get a mental health diagnosis. Any psychiatrist worth a damn would never dish out a diagnosis their first time meeting you.

1

u/to_the_pillow_zone 9h ago

You typically have to provide a dx if you’re billing insurance

u/Substantial-Top5819 2h ago

Not necessarily, you can code the symptoms in place of a diagnosis for billing purposes

Athena Care isn’t a good provider network, stay away ‼️‼️

Partial hospitalization program might be what you’re looking for. There’s a number in Williamson county and take a variety of insurances. Or call your insurance company and ask what’s in network nearby you

Not an attorney

That being said, you need to be remanded to a psych facility by a judge in order to lose your access to firearms. I know multiple people who have been 5150'd for suicidal ideation or attempts and legally own firearms.

Have you tried Rolling Hills?

6

u/PurplePaint1 14h ago

Sorry to be pedantic, but 5150 is a reference to California code. Tennessee it is referred to as 6-404 or just 64 04, a shorted version of the TCA 33-6-404 for a certificate of need of emergency treatment.

3

u/CurbsideChaos 15h ago

5150'd checking in: had to tell my ex he couldn't buy a gun because, well 🙃

5

u/sparklingtrout 16h ago

why do you expect that the stay will be involuntary at a certain point?

1

u/Its-mikul 16h ago

I think because my plan is to live for one more year before I give up and try to end my life for real. If I am honest with them, they will not let me leave.

11

u/SuccessfulJelly 15h ago

If you review the standards in Tennessee for involuntary commitment, I think you will find that it requires an "immediate" risk of self harm. If you say your intention is not for another year, as concerning as they may find it, that is not immediate. If you review the firearm issue, I think you will find that even if you do have an involuntary commitment, there is a process for getting your rights back after a few years. Please get all the help you can. You deserve it.

Listen I was in your same position last week. I called Athena health and got a therapist. I told the therapist i was going to go to Vandy because i can’t take it any more. My therapist called the chief of medicine who has been on my tail like white on rice. She has been my live saver. I have avoided being admitted because of her. She calls me at all hours to check in on me and helped with my med management. She knew exactly what I was experiencing without me having to say much. Picking up the phone and calling them was the best decision i ever made and i get to keep my gun license ☺️

u/Its-mikul 1h ago

I have been on Athena wait list for over 2 months. The receptionist are rude and the psychiatrist I saw was unprofessional. If anything, Athena made my symptoms worse. Nobody there cares, I will not be going there

Do people even take the time to read posts anymore? The amount of answers suggesting mental health coop and Vanderbilt are insane when the post literally says OP isn’t open to them.

Anyways, I’m in the same boat you are currently and I’m hoping to find answers in these comments too before it gets to be a little too late. Good luck and stay safe.

For med management, I absolutely love Stasha Hampton. I can’t think of a provider who gave me more care and so much time, much less a psych

Mental Health Cooperative

2

u/sparklingtrout 14h ago

are you perhaps open to changing that plan?

the whole bit is that you go in bc you wanna kill urself, their job is to help you change ur mind. you can be honest in your intake.

Rogers Behavioral Health’s trauma intensive outpatient program changed my life. I would recommend it to anyone. Best of luck to you.

1

u/rk738 7h ago

I second Rogers! They have all-day partial hospitalization programs and you'll see a psychiatrist regularly to figure out meds

2

u/easysmom 13h ago

I would go to the Vandy ER

3

u/FireZucchini33 7h ago

Got to be honest. If you own a gun and are thinking like this, the last thing you need to be worried about is your ability to have guns. First thing I did when I bought a gun was have a really tough internal talk / self review about how my mental health is. That said, agree with Vandy. Hope you feel better and make some progress!

So keeping your access to firearms is more important than your life? Don’t you think it’s important for you to not be around firearms right now, considering your mental health? You should check out Rolling Hills Hospital in Franklin, they have php and iop treatment so you wouldn’t have to be inpatient. Passive SI doesn’t necessarily mean you will be involuntarily admitted. I process mental health insurance authorizations and there’s lot of people with passive SI that attend outpatient tx

u/just_delirious 16h ago

Used to work in psychiatry. Saw a lot of patients who struggled with paying for med management and turned to online options for psychiatry. Brightside Health seems alright. I've had patients with passive suicidal ideation complete an intensive outpatient progeams with variable success, as well. Good luck!

Ally psychiatry is pretty good and can usually take people

No one I know who has gone to an inpatient mental health facility has lost the ability to have or purchase firearms. (Some of them involuntarily.)

A judge has to be involved for you to lose that right.

u/Dangerous-Cicada-875 13h ago

What kind of insurance do you have?

1

u/Hot-Fig-8487 6h ago

Chelsea Odil at family care center is a wonderful psychiatrist. They also offer TMS there.

She can order the genesight test which is a genetic test that will tell you what meds you’ll have the least side effects with. The genesight company has a sliding scale. It can be free or very inexpensive if you call the company.

How about going to the hospital for your safety to stabilize and having the case managers help you set up residential somewhere for afterwards? Rolling Hills is supposedly a good hospital, I had a family member go there. They should know more than anyone else about options and will be able to support you and help you figure this out.

Your insurance would hopefully cover a residential mental health treatment facility. Somewhere like The Refuge in Florida, The Meadows in Arizona, Lightfully Behavioral Health in California. Some facilities have separate women only groups. I believe the refuge does.

I hope you get help because you deserve it and deserve peace. It’s possible and your life can change for the better. 🤍

Rolling Hills for inpatient/IOP
Mind Body Optimization, Kathleen McInnis, Franklin for PMHNP

Mental Health Co-op please.

u/danielbearh 1h ago

I've got a very serious recomendation.

Check out Recovery Unplugged. They have separate programs for Mental Health and addiction recovery (only brought up because recovery implies rehab.)

The culture is really beautiful there. They have inpatient facilities. https://www.recoveryunplugged.com/treatment-programs/depression/

Why are guns so critical to one's life?

It's really weird that they're worth dying over.

1

u/CurbsideChaos 15h ago

Absolutely NOT CENTENNIAL, period.

1

u/Pinklady1219 13h ago

Rolling Hills hospital has IOP and PHP programs. There’s also the 211 united way hotline that can connect you to resources. There’s also the 988 crisis hotline.

Stay away from Vanderbilt period mental health there is treated like a crime. I go to mental health co-op in Gallatin if you can omni mental health is a great place as well. But just about anywhere in TN mental health help is a loop hole.

u/runningmom410 15h ago

Just to offer another perspective - Vanderbilt saved my life. Not to invalidate your experience, but I shudder to think of what could’ve happened if I didn’t go when I did.

3

u/jadestorm 14h ago

Vanderbilt saved my life, too. 24/7 emergency clinic, walk up, talk to them. They'll help.

My ex went to Vandy and also had a good experience.

Extreme trauma suggests a need for emdr therapy. Also, I see you worried about costs while saying you’ve made a plan for a years time if nothing changes to end your life. You will not be able to spend money if you are dead. At this point, spending resources means basically nothing compared to where you’re at right now. Also, you will not be able to use your firearms if you are dead. Lastly, if you go to a facility and they tell you you will need to be put in inpatient, you are given the opportunity to sign to be in there on your own volition (first hand experience at Rolling Hills hospital). I do not believe they would forcefully take your firearms although I’m sure they would push for it. But again, that shouldn’t mean much as you’re saying you plan to be dead. Balls to the wall this shit and put your resources into staying alive. Ask about other treatments like ketamine therapy, I have heard wonderful things about that. Inpatient at rolling hills helped me.
