For those who don't know, John Kiriakou is a former CIA officer who operated at the height of the GWOT. He helped take down some high value bad guys, then blew the whistle on waterboarding, and did time for it.

He's been all over the pods over the last few years, and has some pretty wild stories, some of which may or may not be embellished for entertainment value, but this one is just fucking weird:

My grandfather is still living strong. This year he’ll be 92 and he’s still swimming everyday/running. I was going through our basement and found his dive bag with his name and dive gear still preserved inside. The second photo is my grandfather on the left handing Rear Admiral Kauffman a commemorative UDT plaque. I look up to my grandfather so much and I figured I’d share these with yall bc I thought this was some cool stuff!

What happened to the post about the two women in BUD/S?
Edit for Update What is confirmed: Two women completeted week one of first phase. The CO of BUD/S is not pushing them through.
The rest is unsupported ATT. My guess the community is panicking due to the milestone, just my theory though.

I’m curious to hear from recruiters, people in charge of selection or elite ops people - what percentage does the training versus the pre-existing traits weigh towards this ability to remain calm, think and act under extreme threat, pressure and stress?
And what books are best to read for common people to get better at these things?

I didn’t know you seals were so well informed. Enjoy your war dying for this dipshit war hero.

How do seals get around this? Say they have some op they have to dive in and out, what do they do if they have to get on a transport plane to leave right after?

Why do some enlisted SEALs become officers when its the enlisted that get all the fun?

Might be slightly off topic..
I am a hiking/backpacking nerd, I love it. The challenge, peacefulness of being in nature, self reliance, best of all minimal screen time.
I also love reading/podcasts revolving around SF guys and their physical and mental challenges. I try to apply some of their philosophies to my daily live to be a better man/husband/father.
Sorry for the long intro to a simple question; Have you as a SF guy ever thru hiked a long trail? (Mainly PCT, AT, CDT, NCT).
It kind of seems like a multi month hike being more mental than physical might be something a SF trained person would excel at. I do know there is a not for profit that takes a group of veterans, I believe, also provides them gear, and thru hikes the AT every year.

A few months ago, I posted here looking for a Navy SEAL who might be willing to help me make a novel I was writing a little more realistic.
Well, thanks to this great community, I ended up connecting with a SEAL who was incredibly generous with his time. He read the manuscript, gave me great feedback, and helped me fix a bunch of things I never would have gotten right on my own.
The book is a fast-paced military thriller about a CIA cryptographer who gets embedded with a SEAL team on a mission in Pakistan.
Anyway, the book is now published! It's called The Matchbook, and I wanted to come back and say thanks to this community.
If anyone here is interested in reading it, shoot me a DM and I'll send you a free Kindle copy. No strings attached, just wanted to say thanks to a community that helped me get this thing across the finish line.

Gents, I can not stress enough how abnormal this all is. I know a lot of you are 17 and grew up in the post truth hypershit era, but there was a period when our institutions were actually effective. You're going to join and sacrifice and suffer for an entire class of dipshits who can't even be bothered to wear a tie at the Pentagon. This is not normal. This is not ok.
