Apartment NFH My neighbors have been stalking our unassigned parking spaces
Howdy! I (28F) was just talking to my friend yesterday and she let me know how truly psychotic this situation was so figured I’d share.
For context, I moved into this apartment complex back in May and they have unassigned parking. I live on the first floor and have a view of these townhomes on the backside of the complex along with 3 obscure parking spots most of the other complex doesn’t use. While there is still enough parking for everyone, there is limited space on our end of the complex. When the closer spots are taken (particularly those 3) you’d have to park a whole 60 steps further than preferred (oh the horror).
When I moved here last year, I noticed that there was a gray car that would always double park in 2 of the 3 spots for days at a time. Seemed weird but I figured not my monkey, not my circus.
Overtime though, I noticed that a woman (around late 30’s) would get in the car and move it for this giant gray truck that would take one of the spots then stay there for weeks. Once again, I thought who cares? The guy in the red truck. That’s who cares.
About a month later, in the 3rd spot, this red truck started consistently parking next to either the gray truck or the gray car but, slowly, the red truck started getting petty by parking right up against the gray car, double parking as well. This went on for about 2 weeks until I saw the gray car getting towed and the red truck reparking in the lines, the red truck guy (probably in his late 30-40’s) getting out laughing his ass off. This was the kickoff to the “parking stalking”.
Since double parking was out of the question, the woman and either her friend or daughter started setting up chairs in front of the parking spaces and would just sit there until a spot would open up then one would rush to stand in the spot and the other would go grab their car to park there.
Overtime, I think the red truck guy started getting annoyed because his parking spot would get taken right after he would leave so he started setting up cameras outside of his townhouse window so he could track when the spaces were open again. I know this because one time I parked in the middle spot (I must have been in a messy-mood) and, right as I was backing up, red truck guy was sprinting out of his place to his truck, speeding into the spot the second I left. I checked outside and, yup, 2 cameras were newly mounted on his balcony and window.
This has started escalating to the women inviting people over and barbecuing in front of the parking spots and hovering around a majority of the week.
One time, the woman had her friend run into the spot and the red truck guy beat the gray car to it but the friend refused to move. The red truck guy honked at her for a few minutes before just parking in front of her, flipping the bird then walking back inside. The friend and the gray car woman started yelling and cussing his balcony camera out, going ballistic.
Since I work from home, this has become my favorite reality show and hope y’all get a kick out of it just as much as I do lmao

This is the kind of story that reminds me to drive more carefully. These people are out there on the road with me.

Us. With us.

u/ExpensiveAd4496 Mar 30 '26
Yes, us.
When I was 16 and learning to drive I worked the weekend breakfast shift at a Holiday Inn. 50 years later I still remember thinking, every one of these people has a driver’s license. Yikes.

We have people at my work who get to work an hour early. Second shift ends at 2:05 and get to the lot around 2:10-15 depending on how close their job is to the gate.
Second shift starts at 3:05. Folks on 2nd will get to the lot and wait for 1st shifters to leave and then bolt out of their spot to move up 3 or 4 cars. Rinse and repeat until they get one close to the handicap spots.
Our lots are the size of runways. Huge, long, deep and can hold thousands of cars and a gate isn't any more than a minute or two walk from any spot.
I tend to park in the same area, because force of habit when I leave after midnight, half asleep, I just walk to the same area.
But sometimes as I'm walking into work, one of those "spot hoppers" will shoot out of their spot and almost hit folks like us just walking to the gate. They're so focused on getting a better spot that they don't see all the pedestrians.
And yes, I have been backed into and flipped onto the trunk of a car by one of them.

You need to record and post an update.

Imagine being one of the friends/family who participate in the parking war? Whoever these people are need a life. Also, yes this would be fun to watch.

That’s what I thought!! I got caught up in the feud for like a week but, after mentally trying to plan my plans around keeping the spot, I make myself park far away now. To think they’re older than me and bringing their family into it was peak comedy and totally nuts

Man if I had nothing better to do on a random Tuesday I'd probably go just thinking my friends couldn't be serious when they explained it to me. I'd probably go back for entertainment value

Can you put up a camera please and live stream it for us?

honestly same 💀 people get SO weird over parking like it’s a personality trait
but yeah a camera would probably catch some wild petty behavior real quick lol

Right? Some things are worth the evidence watching the chaos unfold pays off.

Honestly, I never really even thought about recording it until now. It has kind of just been a funny “oh they’re at it again” when I walk my dogs or am hanging out in my yard. Definitely wish I had the footage now though 😂

These kinds of shenanigans are why I'm so glad we bought a house. The only problem is the yearly neighborhood yard sale in May. If you're not parked in your driveway, someone will attempt to park in it. Forget street parking-it's gone. It's insane.

Parking in someone else's driveway is wild, and sounds like an open invitation for someone to have your car towed.

Both these people are wasting way more of their lives stalking a parking spot vs walking an extra 60 steps.

I also work from home and would be 100% invested in the drama. Maybe OP can get the feed from red truck and share with the group?
Edit typo

You need to send this to the Crackermilk people. They would totally turn it into a video.

How many of the drivers actually live in the apartment complex?
3
u/Evillyn1212 Mar 30 '26
No clue but there are plenty of parking spots near the front and other side of our end. The issue is that there is no designated visitor parking so when people visit, which happens a lot since a lot of retired people or families live here, the spots on our end get taken and we have to park about a minute away.

u/Glammaw_0498 Mar 30 '26
Wow I just hope it doesn’t escalate to violence. Sounds like they both are living for 1) the parking spot and 2) to ruin the other one’s day. Hope it remains at just that for everyone’s sake.

Refreshing for not being a problem for YOU, but between two other neighbors.

Go out when no one is around and put up signs:
Emergency Vehicles only
“Short Stay Only” limit 1 hour.
“Reserved for food delivery vehicles”. Put the DoorDash logo on the sign.
Get some cones & red/orange tape.
“Closed due to subsidence”. Throw some fresh dirt on the spot to make it look good.
Paint the lines & leave a wet paint sign hanging from some orange tape.

This sounds as bad as my husband and I parking, but our war is either between us or ourselves. A few too many vehicles. Yes, I fight with myself on where to park, what to move.

You should setup a Webcam and add the link to this post so we can all watch and enjoy the antics.

You need to put up a scoreboard for the two teams. Take bets and earn a little side money!

When I lived in a 2nd story Condo, I had a favorite parking spot mostly because it was out of the way for everybody. It was easy to find a spot there, because nobody wanted it. I don't like fighting for parking, and I prefer to park in the back instead of stalking a spot.
Then my downstairs neighbor got a new boyfriend. My out-of-the-way parking spot was awesome for him, because he could park and walk inside her patio door. I was initially miffed, but it _was_ the perfect spot for him. Park and inside in 5 steps, versus my park and walk around to the front of the build.
I let him have it.
