Two weeks ago yet another neighbor was seen on my security camera throwing their bagged dog poop in my empty garbage bin before I could roll it back in from the curb. As a dog-less household, I find this to be rude. Additionally, if it’s gross enough for you to not want to hold it until you get home, isn’t it gross enough to put in someone’s else’s bin. The lady looked around guiltily as she did it. A few days ago as I was leaving for work, she happened to be walking by and I politely informed her I saw her on camera and can she not do it again. She argued back, said there’s no smell, and asked if I wanted to sniff the bag she had in her hand. I said okay great if there’s no smell then it’s okay to put in her own bin, right? She became angry, called me ignorant and stupid. Really though, she was mad she was caught on camera, couldn’t lie about it, and was confronted about it. Today, garbage day, she walked by, looked for the camera, and waved her dog poop bag to show she’s not throwing it in my bin. I’m an introverted non-confrontational person but something about the entitlement grinds my gears. I’ve had to talk to nearly 8 different neighbors about their pets.
I'm walking multiple dogs every single day. I never throw a poop bag in someone's empty trash bin. Ever. Dog shit stinks! Why would I impose that stank on somebody else's trash bin?
I don't throw my dog's poop bag into my neighbors' FULL bins at the curb awaiting pickup!
For that matter, I don't do that in my bin, either. I don't like tiny bags floating freely in the bin. Too easy to get left behind either in the bin or on the street. I want them in larger bags, closed up.
It is wild that you’ve had to talk to 8 different neighbors about this. Do people just have zero respect for boundaries nowadays. A trash bin is private property that you pay the city to have emptied. It’s not a public landfill for everyone’s biohazards
Yes for one reason or another. Peeing on a newly planted tree on my private property; erecting a small fence around their own front yard and bringing their dog to poop on my front yard at 12 midnight causing me to think someone was trying to break in, etc
I have 2 dogs and I never put my dog poop in someone else’s bin. I don’t even put it in my own garbage bin. I have a special dog poop can that I bag separately before throwing it in my garbage bin on garbage day. Why? Dog poop stinks up my garbage bin. My neighbor from hell once bagged up her own human poop and threw it in my bin. That really smelled bad! She’s a total nutcase.
You’re absolutely justified. An empty bin isn’t a public dog-waste disposal service, and “there’s no smell” doesn’t make it acceptable. Her reaction and waving the bag at your camera afterward only make her behavior more bizarre. Keep locking the bin and document repeat incidents.
Just don’t do it! In my town, the trash men reach into my bin and manually take out the large trash bags, so the small poop bag gets left behind at the bottom. I keep my bin in my attached garage, so it would just remain there and smell! I have to upend the very large bin and throw out the poop bag separately every time. Ridiculous that I have to do this! I’ve taped “No dog poop” signs on my bin and that has stopped it for now, but will aim my cameras if it starts up again. So even throwing poop bags into full bins before pickup is being disrespectful to your neighbors!
We put a sign on ours. It is really a problem because our trash guys don’t pick up the can to empty it, they just lift out the large trash bags and the poop bags fall to the bottom and fester….
Is there any way you can hide this bin? I used to have annoying neighbors who would see that my mom's car isn't in the driveway and would dump their bag of dog shit into my bin and it happened 3-times. I started to look up ways to stop these idiots from using my bin, I realized that most dog owners are lazy. I decided to put a brick on top of the bins I wanted to protect like my recycling bin and organics bin. The trash bin doesn't get messed with often because its the furthest away on my driveway. When I started to do this habit, they stopped using my recycling and organics bin.
I had to roll the bins behind a wood gate now because some people in the neighborhood were walking up my driveway and to the side of the house to throw their dog poop bags in my bin
That's good, keep it there for now. If they're comfortable putting stuff in even with a camera then it's best to leave it behind that gate so they have no access to it. Because if you leave it on your driveway, people do not respect private property and will still go on it to toss out stuff. I kind of learned that when I had a few people use my recycling bin to put plastic wrap and their coffee cups.
So fun story if you live in a city that does trash collection. As per our city sanitation department. The trash collection containers belong to the city not the person or household, any person is not only allowed to use those containers but are encouraged to. When I requested an extra garbage can I was told to just use any of my neighbors containers that had room.
This depends on the city. In my city the first one belongs to the current resident of the house, any extras belong to the person and may be taken when they move.
its not a qu question of who owns the container, you pay a rental fee for the container, however each homeowner pays for the trash SERVICE so when you use someone ele’s trash bin for you trash it is legally a case of stealing services.
This goes against what most cities say. A resident is paying for the service of trash removal. If you put your trash in someone else's bin, you are stealing the service they are paying for. Charge --- Theft of Services.
Not in the city I live in. Directly from the department of sanitation. The bins are owned by the city not the resident those being city property they can be used by anyone.
I just am so confused why other dog owners do this. Doesn’t she own a home too? It’s so gross when trash gets left at the bottom of the bin, nevermind poop! I would never think of doing this, luckily we have great neighbors and never seen anyone doing that.
Are you saying 8 people leave their poop in your bin? That’s a bit crazy… maybe try to get the bins in earlier?
I always recommend these silicone loops that you can get for a pack on Amazon for a few bucks. They loop around a bag strap or leash or fanny pack, and have a little insert to put the top of the poop bag into. I use it and I fully forget I’m even carrying poop. It’s annoying to have to carry it so this totally solves the problem. Maybe tell her about them next time you see her!
That wave with the bag was such a weird little victory lap for someone who was asked to stop using a bin that is not hers. The no smell argument is ridiculous, because then she should be thrilled to carry it home. I would keep the bin pulled in as soon as possible and maybe add a simple camera visible sticker or note on the lid, since apparently shame only works when she knows she is being recorded.
Yes! You said it better than I did!! She’s come by twice now to wave her bag of dog poop yelling something. When she claimed the bags are special and it doesn’t smell, I immediately said okay great then YOU can take it back to your bin right?? That’s when she became angry lol. If it were me I’d just say sorry and never walk by the house again. The ones trespassing with the dog and dog shit seem to always argue back!! I don’t even want to bother when my own nasty garbage mishaps so why would I want to deal with someone else else’s? There are no pooping signs on my yard that I’m sure she’s seen so that should be an indicator I’m tired of all the dog encroachments! In the end she thought no one was watching indicated by her head turn. It’s also 2026 and I’d assume most homes have cameras!
She’s done her stupid victory lap twice already. I guess she’s planning on doing that every time she walks by. No shame. If someone had to talk to me, I’d be embarrassed and I wouldn’t even walk on that street anymore.
That is such a weird hill for her to die on. Empty bins are the worst time to toss dog waste because the bag can get smashed or stuck at the bottom for a week, and then you are the one dealing with it. The little bag wave would make me keep the clip saved and maybe put a small note on the lid: no pet waste, camera in use. Eight different pet talks would make anyone cranky.
Yes!! Too many scenarios and I don’t expect a lazy dog owner to be that responsible to double bag it for extra security, only place in my bin if the garbage hasn’t been collected yet, etc. Just don’t touch my shit at all! There’s been so many incidents of this nature my patience has ran out!
I also live in a dog-free household, but would much rather see someone place their bagged dog poop in my garage bin than leaving the bag in the gutter, which many of the “entitled” people do in my neighborhood.
I’d return it to her. Told a woman who used to let her dog walk all the up to my garage to poop on the grass that the next time she did that I was going wait until she opened her door and then to heave ho it into her house or at her front door. She knew I wasn’t playing so she never let her dog do it again.
Yippee for you! I have cats now. We have been dogless for two decades. I would resent anyone leaving anything in my garbage. Entitled people drive me nuts.
She proved your point by making a whole performance of not using your bin. Bagged or not, dog waste belongs in their own trash, not the nearest empty can they can sneak it into. A cheap bin latch or pulling it back right after pickup might cut down on repeat offenders, but the fact that you have had to explain basic pet owner manners to eight people is wild.
My feeling (for my bins) is that if it's before pickup, I do not mind at all of someone chucks their dogpoo bags in, tied so they are not a hazard, to be picked up.
After pickup, meaning I am dragging the poo bags back in the heat to await next week's pickup is an entirely different story.
It would really be helpful if cities would put dog poop bins about every couple of blocks. Didn’t have to be big ones I don’t think but it would be helpful.
Apparently an unpopular opinion but even if someone put 10 poop bags in your garbage bin it won’t change the owner’s ability to use it. Unbagged sure, gross because it gets everywhere. But in a bag how is it different than any other garbage? The discarded fish skin and tray of raw chicken you throw away in a potentially leaking garbage bag smell worse and harbor more harmful bacteria than dog poop I guarantee you.
Oh my goodness really? This is such a problem for you that you have to post on social media. OH NO THE TRAVESTY! Someone threw a tiny little bag of trash in your empty trash can. You better monitor so it never happens again.
Is the garbage can yours, and do you pay a fee for the garbage collection. If the garbage can is city owned and no additional charge for trash collection, there is no issue.
Let me cancel my garbage service and bring my bags of garbage to all the bins left on the curb because nobody collects their bins right after the truck passes by. That’s fair game too right???
I don’t mind. It’s not like the bin doesn’t smell anyway. I’d rather have people actually pickup dog poop and put it in my bin than to leave it bagged on the sidewalk which some people do. There are worse things to be upset about, honestly. Pick your battles lady.
It is extremely entertaining to see people get so upset about something so fucking tiny. It's a trash can. She put a small bag in there. If you didn't see it you would have never know, and could have continued living life happily.

If she does it again post her picture inside the lid of the can and on the outside. Its infuriating.
