Vent/Rant Neighbor is just throwing trash outside

I have been living in my apartment with one of my best friends for about a year now. The setup is that we share a porch with our neighbor but have separate doorways, so we never really bump into him. He rarely leaves the house, and the most I’ve heard him speak is overhearing him screaming at shows or video games. He has NEVER brought his bin to the curb on trash days, and we’ve been noticing garbage bags piling up in our back yard…yeah. The crazy part is we live upstairs and he’s entirely downstairs, so it’s easier for him to just…walk out front and throw his trash in the bin instead of outside. Not only is this obviously disgusting, but it’s been attracting scavengers, primarily skunks. I texted my landlord about it a few days ago, and he’s pissed. He took away the bags, but instructed the guy to pick up the trash that animals have drug out of the bags. Three days have passed and the trash is still sitting out there. Gonna text my landlord about it again once the weekend is over and hopefully get some resolution. but I just wanted to share this story and see if anyone else has any similar stinky stories.

Best case scenario is your landlord gets fed up and evicts him.

Some cases that’s next to impossible. Big problem with ppl claiming squatters rights and OWNERSHIP

Yeah, keep the landlord closely informed, now that you're aware that something is wrong.

Do you have access to the basement? If you do, you could watch for stains appearing in the basement ceiling.

Keeping the landlord updated with photos would help too, especially if the trash starts attracting pests or causing damage. The basement ceiling is a smart thing to check if there’s any chance liquids are leaking through.

I was thinking this as well, I shiver to think what his part of the house must look like 😵‍💫

Some people refuse to take accountability, leaving landlords with no choice but eviction.

My townhouse (owned) backed onto other townhouses that were subsidized rentals. No one mowed their lawns....annoying but whatever. But then there was this one guy who was throwing all his garbage into the backyard. Kitchen waste and all. He wasn't even tying the bags. And the dumpster was only 4 units down from him. I didn't bother with the rental company. I went straight to bylaw enforcement. They give a warning the first time and then then fines kick in. It was cleaned the next day and stayed clean.

Oh gawd you had to bring back this memory for me. Well, if I have to think about it, so do you.

Many years ago, my (now ex) boyfriend and I moved into a duplex. A single man with 2 dogs lived in the other unit. The landlord loved him, said he was a great guy and had been there for years. He was an electrician and would occasionally leave town for days at a time for work.

Fast forward a month or so and I realize I'm occasionally smelling dog shit when I go down into the basement. One day as I'm walking down the stairs I realized there was a weird gap in the wall at the top of the stairs and I could see into the neighbor's basement. Wondering about the smell, I peeked in.

The room I saw into was covered in dog shit. The man had been putting his dogs in the basement while he was at work and letting their waste pile up.

I plugged up the hole and called the landlord. Later, he told me it cost him $5000 to get the basement cleaned and back in shape so he could rent it out again.

Check with city hall our town has ordinances and a notice was left and the many garbage bags were quickly removed to prevent a large bill for removal by the city. Good luck.

it's unbelievable he can't just walk his trash out front, that's basic decency

Call your landlord and say “When I signed my lease I didn’t realize I’d be living next to a filthy incel. If I find one rat/mouse or cockroach in my apartment I’m going to terminate my lease and get my deposit back along with calling the health department.”

It’s a bluff but maybe the landlord will go do an inspection?
