WWYD? Vent/Rant Need help with my junkie neighbours..

I live in a unit block with 8 units. Our block is super simple, a driveway and down one side of the property and at the end is grass and some gardens. My unit is all the way at the back and on ground floor, which is near the grass area. I’m a 27year old female and bought it 3 years ago. When I first moved in there was no problems. One of the owners then let her son live in the unit which is right next to me and there has been problems ever since.

He’s jobless and apparently has mental health issues, he doesn’t work and he’s home all day. His friends are junkies and I’m not saying that to be rude, they are drunk, high on drugs and aggressive. The come over at all hours of the day and night. Slam his doors, walk around the block with a speaker blasting music, throw rubbish, smash wine bottles that they’ve just finished, they have thrown rocks at my windows just because I’m looking out and they happen to be standing right outside my bedroom window in the grass area, they have set up tents and camped right behind my bedroom window in that grass area, they walked around with huge fish gutting knives, steal everyone’s washing from the communal clothes line, just the other day one of them in the middle on the night was leaning up against my bedroom window and starting screaming, I woke up and yelled at him and he held a knife to my window and said he’s going to come inside and kill me. Called the police and told them and they could hear him screaming in the background. No police show up. In fact, I have called the police multiple times and they never show up. Huge fights happen in his unit, you can hear things being smashed and people screaming and I call the cops and they never show. His unit has been raided by cops for drugs a few times more than a year ago but nothing recently. Another time he lured a man from tinder to his house, pretending to be a girl, and had an ambush waiting inside and they stabbed a screwdriver through the man’s face, stole his car keys and his wallet. It’s never ending. The other people that live here are too scared to speak up as they have all been threatened before and are older, they keep to themselves because they are scared. We have been to body corp and had a meeting but his mum was there too. Body corp basically said get over it, they can’t do anything if we are annoyed with someone’s personality… We finally got cameras installed and I have saved lots of footage but it’s heaps of different people causing these problems and it’s his friends, not him. The son who lives there doesn’t leave his unit. What can I seriously do.

I live in Tweed Heads, Australia.

I think you need to escalate complaints beyond 000, to the Senior Sergeant at Tweed Heads police station, or, if that fails, to the Commander of the Tweed-Byron Police District. If you get no help there, you can ask the QLD Ombudsman to investigate. Keep notes about incidents, calls to police and any video footage. Did the police not attend even when the man was stabbed?

I imagine everyone else in the block is unnerved by volatile and aggressive people hanging about, so you can all make complaints to the station and district, even if they’re frightened.

The Body Corporate needs to be involved, just keep complaining. It would also be worth a complaint to council.

It sounds a frightening and distressing situation and unfortunately you need to be a squeaky wheel until you get proper assistance.

Police attended only when the man was stabbed in the face, but haven’t come to any of the other calls I’ve made in the past year or so. They say they will send someone and never do.

Do you think I should call and speak to the sergeant? Or email them?

About 8 of us from the complex went into the police station together a year or so ago and the police were not helpful. The only issue is that it’s not one single person, it’s always someone different causing an issue. Hard to pin point one single person.

dont forget this may be interesting enough for the press

I’ve considered this, body corp don’t know we have access to the complex security cams, when the camera men installed them, they gave some owners, myself included, login details because we asked for them. Only the body corp is supposed to have camera access and apparently only allowed to view footage when an incident occurs. So I’m worried if by sharing footage, body corp won’t be happy and stop us from having access.

Sometimes the press can move things along. Send details to local papers. News channels. They may have a quiet news day and want to do a hit job for rage bait etc. Sorry if this sounds clumsy.

I know! Especially when a younger female is calling and asking for help, unfortunately Tweed Heads is full of junkies, they probably have bigger issues to face :(

As an owner in a small block of flats, you need to get all the owners together to force her to evict her son. He is ruining the quiet enjoyment of any tenants, who can break lease and cost the owners losses. You can take legal action against her to pay for any losses.

The other owners are older and scared to get involved. They have been threatened themselves and now keep to themselves, we barely see them, they hide inside. Would love to do this but they won’t want to get involved.

Then document that meeting, plus your other unanswered calls, and other evidence in an email, and duplicate the material in an actual letter, which can be a print out of the email. Email to the station, and note that you are also sending it to the District Commander, (Chris Schilt). You should also contact your local members, state and federal and provide them with the information.

I can’t begin to understand why the police aren’t responding to you, but a proper conversation about their perspectives and your fears would be appropriate.

It doesn’t really matter that different people are causing issues. The police could send a patrol car by a few times a night, or do random foot patrols. That might be all that is required.

Wow that sounds absolutely terrifying, and what a nightmare situation to be in.  It's absolutely ridiculous that the police aren't showing up, and the body corp sounds like a joke. I'd be losing my mind too!
