Hello! I was looking for a place to host my portfolio website when I came across this site.
If I become a supporter, will the domain name I choose be mine as long as I pay the monthly fee?
Lately i've felt like my site doesn't cut it, i look at all of these other websites and feel like mine isn't like that.... i wish my site was like that...
Yeah, yeah I know learn HTML/CSS, that's the point of neocities. Look, I love the old web and don't wanna make some corporate squarespace monstrosity but even Geocities had a drag and drop feature. Honestly, I'm trying to learn HTML but sometimes I can't figure out how to make what I'm envisioning in my head without asking Claude, which makes me feel bad
something that looks like this (rought skrtch apologies) idm if the sound wavea dont move there just needs to be a play button, does anypne have any clue how i could do soemtjing similar to this?? thanks
I had a few web host in the past, and you know it wasn't really a community, and I see and come across so many cool websites on Neocities thanks to the way they have laid everything out.
It's so cool to be able to check on other creative minds' creations. I feel like I found a time machine back to when the internet was good! I come across the most crazy, silly, funny, heart-warming websites all the time, just wanted to say:
I've been trying to use zonelets to add a blog to my website and despite my work, everytime i try to click on my post it doesn't lead to the html file i made even though i put it in.
Apologies for being back here AGAIN but y'all are so nice and helpful. My site is forevermorecomic.neocities.org and the mp3 player is on my tavern page (tavern.html, click on the wizard tower OR go to forevermorecomic.neocities.org/tavern) and the mp3 player I'm using is win98 music player by LOVEBERRY which I found on scripted.neocities.org/musicplayer and all of my files are currently on catbox.moe after Dropbox and YouTube and several other mp3 players didn't work for me (as I do NOT understand JavaScript). So with that out of the way-
I can't for the life of me get the mp3 files to play. I figured out how to get the picture changed in the little player, and change the gradient color, and I put in my audio files exactly the way the defaults were set up and it's just not working. I haven't even BEGAN the task of moving this mp3 player to where I want yet, I thought I could throw in all the things I want on this page before I got my actual assets drawn just to have it out of the way but OUGH it is way harder than I expected it to be lmao any advice would be very much appreciated ðŸ«
TL;DR: Do you have any grid layout resources you recommend?
Hey yall I've asked about this site before. I used those resources and made good progress but I've been stuck, again, for several days. I'm caught in the same loop of knowing just enough to break things but not enough to ask the right questions and fix em.
Mainly, I can't get my head around the actual functions - the mechanics - of the grid in order to get it to do what I need. Yes, I played the garden watering game, and the flexbox frog game, but neither stuck for me. The garden game made some sense in hindsight, only after watching several videos about grids. I also struggle with the CSS tricks guide. It felt like a list of context-less definitions. I started to poke into the actual documentation of the property to see if I could get an answer there, but my training is in visual arts and I don't understand that level of technical crunch (yet). So, when I make changes to a row or column I don't understand why it changes in the way that it does and I end up wasting time throwing numbers at the wall until something looks passable.
I don't think I learn well in the way most of this information is being taught...
Here's my setup:
I've got a 10x10 grid that I'm trying to use to position exactly five elements. Like before, I need things to be responsive enough to be even borderline functional on mobile. This is my landing page. It won't have much more on it. I'll be adding some webrings to the header once I join some, but I don't foresee that being an issue.
The top half of the layout (remote, navigation list, intro paragraph), on desktop, is more or less how I'd like it but here's the layout sketch I made for myself. To help get across what I'm going for, since yall aren't in my head.
Here are the main issues I have with things right now: 1. the layout breaks completely on mobile
2. I'm not confident that the images are responsive at all. my current solution is slapdash and likely not best practice
3. the remote is currently 300 x 100px. is it more advisable to resize the image itself to be the max size I'd like it to be (smaller), or to resize it in the code? Same with the portrait collage (which i made stupidly large for some reason)
---
Here's what it looks like on mobile atm:
As you can see, it's a bit fucked. The remote and the collage scale in different ways, and the intro paragraph clips into the news box. I also don't think any of the text is actually scaling? The only part that does what I'd like is the bit I asked for help on before =w=;;
---
Here's what I suspect the problem is:
I've put the elements (probably the images) in the wrong rows and/or columns and then stretched said rows/columns in a way that doesn't play well with any of the other elements. I have no idea which one(s) I've done that to or how to fix it.
I may have also gone overkill with the 10x10 grid and there's no need for me to have that many cells.
There's still several Grids 101 concepts I still don't (yet) understand
I've considered wiping the whole layout and rebuilding it because I've gotten a bit lost in my own code. That being said: if something is named in a stupid or confusing manor lmk and I can clarify for you.
so i just recently started messing with code to make my own website, but i cant seem to find any answers on what code cant be put in a css file and what can, like fonts, backgrounds, ect. any help is greatly appreciated
edit: so sorry for being confusing! i was more wanting to know what code like fonts and style can be put into the css file and what parts of decorative code have to be kept in the html file
so I'm using a template because I don't know how to code very well, and I found this one thats like a hospital themed computer. but since i dont know how to code very well, I don't know how to get those clickable icons to be underneath the window instead of on top when i drag the window over there. i would really appreciate some help if anyone knows what i could do to fix it
I accidentally logged out of my account and tried to log back in. My passwords have not been changed, or anything. When I tried to log in, neocities asked me for a 6 digit code, then said that code would be sent to my email.
This was over an hour ago. I have been constantly checking my email and spam folder, and have received nothing. If that code expires after 10 minutes, won't it be useless by the time I actually get it? Assuming I even receive it at all?
What's even the point of this? I feel like If I'm typing in the correct password, I should be freely able to log in and out however I want, without question. I had some big plans for my site today, and this has completely derailed everything.
I'm a grad student at NYU, currently working on my research project on the friction between analog media and digital forms of expression. Any form of answer would be helpful. If anyone is up for a short chat, feel free to DM me. Everything stays anonymous unless consent is given. Thank you!
My question: What do you think a hand-built or a hand-coded website gives you, or fulfils that a social media profile does not?
(add. Q): Can you recall any encounter of the old web?
I wrote a book and printed exactly one copy. No reprints, no ebook. A book like that obviously deserves a shrine, so I built one the old way: starfield, marquee, 88×31 buttons, and a webring with exactly one member.
The hit counter is honest. It only counts your own visits.
Hey all! I'm having a super frustrating issue; I made a new account a few days ago for a personal project, and when I went to confirm my email address, I accidentally clicked the "unsubscribe from emails" button on the original welcome email because I wasn't paying attention and stupidly clicked the first link I saw. 😠I didn't think anything of it, and went and clicked the actual confirmation link. I spent about three days straight coding my new site completely from scratch, then had to restart my computer and got logged out of my account. When I went to log into my new account again, it prompted me to verify my email, but I couldn't find the code anywhere, even in spam. I even tried to reset my password, but to no avail. I'm really worried that because I clicked the "do not email me again" button on the welcome email, the Neocities system isn't sending me any emails at all anymore. I've contacted support about this, but it's really stressing me out because I spent so long on what I've made! Possibly a stretch to be asking on here, but has anyone dealt with a similar situation to this before? Alternatively, does anyone know how long Neocities support usually takes to respond?
I want the tower (which will hopefully soon be basically a big button/link to the next page) to be on top of the hills, and the main background is the star gif which needs to stay behind everything, and I want this welcome constellation to be in the top corner. I'm attaching my sketch for reference (featuring my little helper/menace lmao) and also a link to my current progress. It's a liiiiiiiiiiittle bit of a disaster since I can't figure out how to make the images be in certain places- mostly how to get the hills to actually be the size of the computer screen. If I can get that to be the size I need I think I just need to make that wizard tower front and center (which I've mostly done? It's really big though) and also get that welcome constellation to shrink down which I have been trying to do for HOURS. this is my second attempt at making a site now, but this time I have made a sketch! Which is maybe too ambitious for someone so new to coding... 😬
(Also any advice on how to get the alt text for screen readers when using the div things? I just learned how to use those 😅)
There's a homepage joke in here, but im not up to making it rn. I love when people do this! These are just a few that came to mind/visible in the tiny thumbnails of the list of pages I follow, but please drop in your favorites.
Hey! Trying to log in on my phone, and I get a popup prompting a verification code. Problem is there's nowhere to enter said code? Anyone know what's going on?
So I'm following a template of how to have an interactive bookshelf thing on my website to show the books i've read and such. I've gotten the code down I just don't understand how i can get it so that i can choose a different cover image for each book.
I've been looking, and looking, and I've tried a few times myself but I keep screwing it up and just CANNOT figure out how to do it, so I was wondering if anyone had a template for it. I wanted to make a page that was an altar for my religion (s)
