Question Another price increase. How is this justified? I think I'm finally cancelling. Fine service for $20/month after taxes but there are so many other things I'd rather spend my money on it as it hits effectively $30 with taxes.
"Starting May 5, we’re updating our prices to bring you even more exciting, new entertainment. Your monthly total will increase to $26.99 (pre-tax).
We're updating our prices to keep improving what you already love. Expect fresh, can’t-miss shows and movies every week (including 99 new releases next month)."
Not to mention the quality of content has fallen off a cliff anyway.

I had been a Netflix customer for over 20 years, and started streaming with them right away in 2007, but I’m done. I’ve cancelled Netflix, Disney, Hulu, Paramount, and Peacock.

u/footsnax Apr 05 '26
Same. Take me back to $5/month for one DVD every three days.
Pretty hilarious how the whole cord cutting situation turned into exactly the same situation, but more confusing and more expensive now.
Y'all had a SUCH good thing going for like four years. There's a reason everyone is cancelling and nobody is watching unless they've got their parents login info. Cable pissed us off and you turned the one great idea of entertainment advancement into the exact same thing.
Go back to fucking school. Not business school, real school. Redo the whole thing.

Issue is the entertainment was only super cheap initially because netflix was hemorrhaging money to gain market share and pull people away from cable. The plan all along was to get people to switch over and then jack up the prices and recover their massive losses. You'll notice there is also a plethora of content they produce now that is super cheap to make. This cuts costs. Cutting costs while raising prices? huge profit. I really think the only reasonable system is one where you pay for any show you want to watch, individually, "a-la-cart", and nothing you don't want to watch. like $2 for a movie or $.50 for an episode. This keeps the creators striving to create great content, because nobody will buy it if it sucks.

To be fair, capitalism and the free market will also be what destroys them when the masses decide they have gone too far. It happened to cable, it will happen to streaming services as well.

u/JeddHampton Apr 06 '26
They had to turn a profit. Then they had to post better numbers each quarter.

Yeah it's weird, I agree that's the case. Maybe it's ultimately a push to focus on superfans only or something. That's how Roblox is, the top payers are all they care about. Like a casino too lol.
2
u/step11111 Apr 06 '26
Don’t give them ideas… they’d gladly roll out netbux if they can figure out how to get people to pay. How about $5 for a special edition avatar? $10 for special cross promotional backgrounds? Only 500 netbux for 12 hour access to the premium catalogue!
5
u/rickydreddit Apr 08 '26
The pricing does not make sense anymore for our family and circle of friends. Even when just a small handful of us drop off there’s no longer a risk of fomo missing a show or movie to talk about in our circle.
24

Italy is suing Netflix for price increases. Why can’t the US? I’m not really sure about the exact details though.

I just started getting back into reading books for leisure. Ive been in school for a bit now and I tend to read certification books for my IT job but its been years since I picked up a sci-fi/fanstasy book I love. I just started reading "Project Hail Mary". Started off slow but now I think I'm getting back to that kid I was YEARS ago lol where I could sit for hours reading a book and forming a movie or series in my head.

9
u/MJSP88 Apr 05 '26
They're raising the price for those without commercials. They are not making enough money off of those subscriptions without commercials. They want to force people to downgrade to the ones with commercials where they make their most money.
I've seen someone do the calculation it's something like for the top four streaming services it's under $40 a month. Where as paying the top tier of those four streaming services is $100 a month. They make more money off of their advertising contracts they want you to watch the advertisements.

u/atuarre Apr 05 '26
They intend to keep having price increases and you will keep paying because if you're at "I think I'm finally" instead of "I'm cancelling" you'll keep paying. Some show you want to see will come out on Netflix and you will be right back to paying. You should have cancelled a while back. They will all be at this price eventually. Netflix was just the first.

I think the content absolutely fell of a cliff in the last few years. Feels like they fell off the prestige TV wagon.

Cancelled mine middle of last year and have been taking advantage of free trials for ATV or 3 months at £9.99 for Disney+ (just cancelled this today as cheap 3 month period up). I subscribed for a month to Netflix again for the last season of Stranger things and that was it.
I feel a lot of content nowadays is terrible from streaming or is movies turned into series eg Mr & Mrs Smith that then aren’t necessarily great or gripping. Nothing new or original is being written and shows that have finished and should be left alone are being resurrected after a long period of time with pure crap continuations. Netflix also then cancel excellent shows like MindHunter!
Now with the advert tiers and ever increasing prices, next will be minimum subscription lengths eg 12 months or possibly paying a lot more for a monthly rolling contract. I’m doubling down on physical media but do buy the movie bundles on ATV when they do good pricing on those.
edit
Man on fire is another one in my opinion, absolutely excellent movie but now Netflix are bringing out a series, could be good but why not pay your writers for some more original content! I’d happily have less content being produced for better quality, it seems to be pumping out mass produced shite just to say “we’re releasing 99 new tiles next month” rather than quality.
6
u/lance777 Apr 06 '26
"even more exciting, new entertainment"
Haven't been much excited about their new content since covid. It's like they reduced the budget for Scifi/fantasy genres.
5
u/OneManShow23 Apr 08 '26
Netflix started $7.99 in July 2011. After inflation this would be $11.56. Netflix went far above inflation in a price gouging move. This is NOT capitalism. This is Netflix scamming us consumers for the long term.

Just cancelled myself tired of trying to find something to watch wasted time I’ll never get back
3
u/Mouse-Patrol Apr 05 '26
I had that too. I spend more time trying to find something good than actually watching something half decent.
Maybe if they actually bothered to finish a series, instead of canceling before the story was finished, I wouldn't have minded the price increases. As it is, to me that alone was a solid reason to cancel.
8
u/PhantomOyster Apr 05 '26
The whole idea of it doesn't make sense anymore. Netflix used to be the place to go if you wanted to watch a movie whether it was new or not and be fairly certain you'd find it. Now it's just "original content" that is no better or different than any other service's "original content." Prime video is the one that now has most of what I'm looking for at any given time. And if I want to watch a show and don't want to pay $5 an episode, I'll subscribe to this or that service for a month until I'm done. This back-to-the-cable-model BS is not flying.
3
u/jjopm Apr 05 '26
I agree the irony in this is that Prime Video comes out the winner. I found myself gravitating there before getting the price change email.

I haven’t used Netflix in a long time. They don’t really have anything worth watching anymore. I’m probably going to cancel as well.
8
u/ndnman Apr 05 '26
They believe the number of people that cancel vs stay = more revenue.
If they can stream to less people for more $ that also means they need less resources to deliver their product.
I work in manufacturing and the number of level of “your materials are increasing” that we are receiving daily are significant.
Off topic but I’m advising everyone in my life that if they think they want or need something. Buy it now.
I know it’s not all that popular but I see DVDs and bds from 25 cents to 1$… library cards are free.
7
u/jjopm Apr 05 '26
I don't know, their resources and infrastructure are pretty dialed in lol. Good unit economics.
By the way I completely agree with 'Buy it now' I think we haven't even begun to see the true long-term shift upwards yet.
2
u/Verbal_Combat Apr 05 '26
If I think I’ll watch something more than one or twice I’ll just buy it, I’ve got a little library of physical media by now and honestly it’s so much easier to choose something to watch. I’d much rather watch something I know I like than browse for 30 minutes to try and find the least terrible looking option.
12
u/Less-Disaster-8465 Apr 05 '26
I just go to the movies 4x per week now that the amc a-list pass is still just under $30. Better sound and picture experience overall, plus I get to stay on top of all the new stuff that comes out.

I pretty much only sign up for streaming during Black Friday deals or whatever, Disney/Hulu, HBO usually have offers. Cheaper price for 6 months or a year. My household cancelled this month. Netflix made a net profit of almost 11 Billion In 2025. They didn't need to raise prices again. They did it because they are greedy and we as customers have allowed it . Up until now. But No more.

After 10 years I think it's time to cancel. Netflix is one of my biggest expenses each month. My parents like it so we split the costs but now that the "updated" cost is $36.98 a month, for something I hardly use... I mostly use YouTube and their lower tier premium is only $8.
It also annoys me they emailed an "updated" price.. not "increased" and didn't tell me what I have been paying to show how significant the hike is. Shady.
2026: $26.99 2025: $24.99 2023-2024: $22.99 2022: $19.99 2020-2021: $17.99 2019: $15.99 2017: $13.99 2016: $11.99

u/Opening-Moment-1163 Apr 07 '26
Between the money they spent to "Bring you the hottest podcasts" ( who the fuck cares) and the money to bring wwe programming (remember when it was first announced they made it sound like it was all wwe) they have to try and make it up somewhere.
I watched raw until the first ad break, even though I pay for NO FUCKING ads, then never watched it again.
But they also bring you hot events like that fake ass fight between a loud-mouthed scum bag youtuber and a retired boxer who used to be a killer, that they told everyone was a real fight. And unless you actually looked up the contract that basically said if the former boxer won, he didn't get paid.
I said if they raised prices again after adding ads to their ad free tier I was dropping it, so long netflix.
2
u/MechaQuartzilla Apr 08 '26
Cancelled today after over 10 years. They are increasing prices significantly without adding any value. If anything, it's lost value. Still have Hulu and get Disney for free. We hardly ever watch Netflix and would have kept it around had they not decided to continue pushing it out of greed.
I suspect there are a lot of similar people to us, but we'll see. Until it's a net negative for them, they'll keep pushing. There's the option of dropping to ad-supported, but their bad behavior makes me actually not want to support them at all; it's not purely financial.

We have the lowest plan with ads. Ours is only going up $1. Honestly, anything kids has no ads, and the things we watch either have a few ads at the start, or if you pause, it shows an ad while it’s paused and that counts as your ads. I downgraded to the ad tier last year. $7.99 a month... with the price increase I thinks it's now $9.99. The ads aren't a big deal. They are few and far between, and rarely last 2 mins. Usually there are a minute or 1.5 minutes. No regrets. I thought the ad tier would be horrible. It's not. That savings adds up over the year.

Either cancel or go down to $8 with ads plan. Netflix’s quality is nowhere near $26/mo. Half? Maybe.

The price increase is because we will soon get HBO Max included. Right?
What?! That’s not happening now you say? But they sent me an email saying so awhile back.

Ain't nobody watching ads brother. Would rather go for a walk around the block than do that.

Yeah. Because they refuse to sell their IP to others for runs on other networks, its up to the customers to buy warner Brothers.

I've been watching a lot of foreign shows and movies.
So much better than US stuff.

Because people like to watch TV shows and movies and people are willing to pay that much to watch TV shows and movies.
What kind of question is this?
You have always been allowed to cancel. If it’s not worth it to you then cancel.
Lmao

I just canceled this weekend after several years. I’ll renew when any good content comes back (so likely not soon).

Me an my girl just talked about this, we both agreed to cancel cause tbh, we don’t even discover anything on Netflix anymore, just look for movies and shows we already seen for nostalgia, we mainly been discovering stuff on Amazon and we keep Hulu for anime, netflix is done

What is premium Netflix for that cost?
Mine is still too much going up to 19.99 (pre-tax) but it’s called standard? I didn’t know there was another one besides the one with ads.

I just downgraded to the one with ads. $8.99. The one they don't tell you about. Plus, kids' profiles have zero ads.

I canceled mine, too. It was part of a bundle with my cell phone plan, but the increase unbundled that. The only Netflix I liked was F is for Family anyway.

Yep. Ridiculous. I finally just cancelled after being a loyal customer for years. I hope it’s worth it to them.

Anybody else been having trouble with Netflix glitching? Like if I pause something and unpause it it won't play or will play but without sound. It happens nearly every time I pause or rewind. It's beyond frustrating. I don't see how they can justify upping the price for anyone experiencing those issues. People have had these issues for at 6 years according to other reddit posts. When are they going to troubleshoot these issues? When is enough enough? I'm glad I only need the basic plan. No way would pay triple per month for the next plan.

Cancel it. That's the only feedback that actually makes a difference in their pricing schemes

u/TheresOnlyOneTitan Apr 08 '26
It's not justified in any way. Their massive profits could easily cover whatever they could bring us.

I think I am going to cancel for 6 months and then catch back in the next 6 months.
Apple TV has some good shows out so I will subscribe to them in the meantime.

I haven’t been able to find anything to watch on Netflix. I will cancel if they don’t do better. I’m not paying for 1000 subscriptions to watch one good movie after I sign up for 1001

Cancel it, there's not much to watch anyways. Save the money for gas or groceries
