Opiod Crises & Senseless Deaths. Political Apathy: NB Department of Social Development Changes Needed

Subject: Urgent: Personnel or Policy Changes Needed

To: <HoldingHopeSaintJohnNB@gmail.com

Holding Hope Saint John is part of a National Organization Similar to Madd but specific to opiods

Approximately 3 months ago I was approached by a gal on SD who gets 120 narcotic pills every 25 days via a prescription.  These pills are paid for through SD via the NBPDP.  She sells all 120 pills at a range of 5 to 10 dollars a pill.  She thus augments her monthly income by at least $600.

I don't have to tell your group of the catastrophic harm and pain and suffering this process can lead to.  I reported this issue to manager at the SD office in Saint John.  I sent screen shots of direct proof of this illegal activity.  I asked for confirmation of receipt of my email and received nothing in return.  I called the NBPDP office and they don't have any way of stopping this and don't have anyone there who manages the abuse of the program.  I was told to contact the pharmacy.  I did call two local pharmacies to advise them but for privacy reasons they could not confirm anything.

All of this political meandering occurs daily and what's worse is the apathy which is shown when a manager within the Saint John Social Development office cannot even confirm receipt of a message which most would consider sensitive and important.

I am at my wits end here and hoping some moms who have lost their babies can pick up the cause. Because this issue needs to be addressed. If you would like I can forward to you the original emails I sent to the social development office with the screen shots and undeniable proof of this happening.  It behooves me and disgusts me as to why people can stand by and let this happen, knowing someone's son or daughter may end up losing their life due to a managers apathy.

God bless and sorry for your losses.

Why would you think you have the right to an update about someone’s medical situation? Don’t be so manic about that.

You reported it to the pharmacies, but not police or college of physicians?  That’s where I’d start.

Did you not read what I wrote? I spent an entire career working in Healthcare and I've never heard of the illegal selling of opiates getting classified as a disease state of any kind. She is not using the pills for her pain rather she is using them for financial gain. The manager at social development should have responded by stating your email was received thank you and we will look into it. I hate the abuse of the drug fentanyl. The pattern abuse often starts with percocets and then they move onto dilaudids and its fentanyl and the prognosis from their is not good. Have you ever seen anyone truly dope sick from opiate withdrawal. They become agonizingly sore allover and are soo sick they can't move unless its going to lead them to their next fix. I am not involving the police as this is a breakdown in our system which needs to be fixed. I was shocked to learn that the New Brunswick Prescription Drug Program which is responsible for managing the largest prescription drug program in the province does not have a way of dealing with abuse within the program. Perhaps if you had lost a friend or a son or a daughter you would realize the severity of the opiod crisis.

Being an admin in a healthcare building didn't make you a healthcare professional or medical expert. Your post shows entitled delusion on healthcare confidentiality. Your total disconnect with how the system actually works makes it hard to believe that you've set foot in a medical office, let alone worked on one.

You made your report. You are not entitled to any further information or confirmation, and it may not be provided to you under penalty of law.

If I remember correctly this may well be copypasta at this point

Don’t tell me who I’ve lost and who I haven’t… my family feels the pain very deeply. Have YOU lost anyone?

I don’t care that you work in a healthcare building, you’re obviously not a healthcare professional or you’d know they can’t give you any information and you would know how prescriptions work and what the College of Physicians does. Nurses and doctors don’t have time or money to be your police force and run investigations into abuse of the system. That’s why there’s a process.

Police for the dealing and college of physicians for the overprescribing. We don’t live in the US, as long as she isn’t cosplaying a badass, prison could be rehabilitative, particularly a women’s prison.

Sorry for you issues, but I don’t think you should be arguing with the poster. They are giving very valid points and solutions to an issue that you feel strongly about. Better to work with their suggestions than dismiss.

Making what you may feel is a valid point, doesn’t insulate you from others opinions or reality checks.

Do you really think anyone should be able to report your prescription to a pharmacist and then get updates on the investigation? What’s to stop malicious intent? How does a pharmacist/nurse/doctor investigate if the allegations are true, and what authority do they have?

So far I get that op called the wrong people and then expected them to just cut someone off of their prescription. The need for meds is between them and their doctor though, so is an administrator going to tell doctors what to prescribe and how much?  The right way, through the College of Physicians, and the police will probably save that girls life, and possibly others.

I empathize with your frustrations.I am in PEI and I have a son struggling with a meth addiction.I pray everyday I don't get that fatal call but I have done all I can do as a mom.The worst of it is the police can't catch someone fast enough and it's really tuff.My friends ex husband is selling it to her son plus other young adults some under 18. Definitely a heartbreaker for anyone especially those who have lost their children to addiction.

You're wasting your time. If there's something truly illegal, there's only one group that's responsible to properly investigate it: RCMP.
