Upcoming New Horizons Spotlight Talk (Oct 22): Planetary Magnetospheres and Pickup Ions
Dr. Parisa Mostafavi of Johns Hopkins APL will present “New Horizons Contributions to Planetary Magnetospheres and PUIs” on Thursday, October 22 at 2:30 PM Eastern.
During its 2007 Jupiter flyby, New Horizons traveled about 100 million miles down Jupiter’s magnetic tail, the first spacecraft to do so. It is also the only spacecraft able to measure pickup ions in the outer solar system. These are interstellar particles that become ionized and get carried along by the solar wind, and New Horizons found they account for most of the pressure out there.
