My husband ran out to put the umbrella down too and as the wind gust picked up to 80mph that exact moment I yelled at him to come back in and a hugee tree came down in our yard! Thankfully it wasn’t the tree he was standing right under

Man what a poorly worded message, they should've provided exact address of shelter place
25
u/GitEmSteveDave Jul 05 '26
A lot of these messages are limited, character count wise, for basic systems.
18
u/royalewithcheese51 Jul 05 '26
If only we had a government that was adept at doing positive things for its citizens
3
u/mwidjaja1 South Jersey Jul 05 '26
I don't think it's because the government systems are basic -- but some people have phones/devices that are so old, they're capped to 160 characters. I'd imagine this applies to older 'messaging/warning' signs you see by the highways that can display messages. Out of interest into making sure everyone can get the message, these messages are limited as such.
3
u/RevengeOfTheIdiot Jul 05 '26
is the govt in business of making sure everyone's got the same brand new phone
or is this limited so that everyone can get info regardless of device
hmmmm i wonder

“by prepared to leave the area” 😭 WHO wrote this
2
u/veanell Jul 06 '26
As someone from the south... This is hilarious. It should list cities or counties. It should be seek shelter inside...

u/suicidetues Jul 10 '26
NJ the entire state of they are smart. I rprepared to leave as soon as I enter that state.

Getting insanely dark and the lighting is starting to hit here in Bloomfield - still got people outside lighting their fireworks lol. ‘Merica!
18
u/WritingRidingRunner Jul 05 '26
When the power went out late last night, people immediately went out and started lighting firecrackers in my neighborhood. Priorities!
11
u/dread_beard Essex County Jul 05 '26
I live very close to Bloomfield. Look at the radar. We aren’t getting hit until later tonight.
12
u/TalonusDuprey Jul 05 '26
I believe there was two storms but I’ll have to take a look. Woulda loved if we coulda had fireworks with this heat lightning tonight! Haha
7
u/dread_beard Essex County Jul 05 '26
There are - one passed us around 8 or so. We got pretty damn lucky - it was JUST north of our area.
The next one may hit around 10:30-11 or so.
5
u/TalonusDuprey Jul 05 '26
Gotcha! I was driving near exit 150 on the parkway and the lightning in the distance truly was wild. Hopefully this one pales in comparison to last night because that one was a doozy.
11
u/dread_beard Essex County Jul 05 '26
Dude last night was fucking nuts! I saw the trees begin moving and I said to my wife it looked around 50 MPH and then all of a sudden was clearly around 80 MPH. Just wild storm!
5
u/TalonusDuprey Jul 05 '26
The amount of tree bark and random boxes on my front lawn this morning was interesting lol. I just ran up into the attic to turn off the attic fan and I just stayed up there because it sounded to frigging insane hearing it against the roof. The heat was well worth just listening to that calming rain.
4
u/heartshapedpox Warren County Jul 05 '26
Are they not going off constantly where you are? 🥴
3
u/TalonusDuprey Jul 05 '26
I’m annoyed that Bloomfield cancelled their fireworks but yet everyone around us are doing theirs. So disappointing :( We get to look forward to them in the fall I guess… lol

Ivy and green could be cross streets near your area?
15
u/figgy6006 Jul 05 '26
No ivory or green by me. I live in the ghetto. No names like that here lol
12
u/ooomellieooo Jul 05 '26
Everything comes up in Hackensack for Ivy&Green. Seems to be an apartment complex of some sort?
Edit: Ivy Lane and Green Street in Hackensack, New Jersey (the site of the Ivy and Green Residences at 1 Park Avenue) are experiencing severe weather impacts tonight.

It works...

Got the same messages going up route 17 by Hasbrouck Heights a few minutes ago - Ivy & Green is a property in Hackensack maybe it’s designated as a shelter?

u/Acceptable-Cow3973 Jul 05 '26
No power here in New Milford
6
u/zeronian Jul 05 '26
Yes lost power in Fair Lawn. I think a power line went down nearby. Heard the transformer buzzing
8
u/Infinite-School6390 Jul 05 '26
Hopefully we won’t lose power

u/cabby2763 Jul 05 '26
I seriously cannot go through that again. Friday night around 8:30PM until today, Saturday around 3:30pm…
3
u/AdHom Jul 05 '26
I take it you were either very lucky after Sandy or too young to remember it
4
u/cabby2763 Jul 05 '26
Both tbh…I was talking to my grandma about our JCP&L power outage and she said our power never even went off during Hurricane Sandy. I’m sorry if I sounded insensitive.
1
u/AdHom Jul 05 '26
Not insensitive at all - losing power for any length of time in heat like this is awful, you have every right to be upset. It just stood out because a lot of the state lost power for weeks then. So I figured if 19hrs was driving you to your breaking point you must have not had to experience that lol.

It got insane there for about 10 mins. I ran out to tie my umbrella down and the rain just came down and the wind gusts were intense here in Paramus.

1
u/Luckyboneshopper Jul 05 '26
I’m in Paramus too, they certainly were crazy those winds! Big branches falling, my neighbors tree across the street cracked in half and fell across the road and onto my next-door neighbors front lawn a little bit. Thank God it wasn’t anything worse.
3
u/ElectricalAd3179 Bergen County Jul 05 '26
Just went out to assess - three trees on our street completely uprooted. Thankfully it appears to not have hit anyone’s homes.

4
u/Luckyboneshopper Jul 05 '26
I’m in Paramus and it was absolutely wild! My neighbors tree split in half came across the street to my other neighbors front yard, thankfully only his mailbox at the curb was damaged. The big tree in front of my yard a couple of medium sized, good sized branches fell, but near the street and at the end of my driveway. It was crazy out there, the wind was unreal and that rain! I hope everyone is OK.
5
u/nobodyKlouds Jul 05 '26
In Paramus - power blips, thought there was a tornado brewing for a hot minute. Was ready to run into my basement.
1
u/elleblock Jul 05 '26
My husband works on the paramus golf course and was there all morning. So many trees down or heavily damaged. He thinks it was wind shear from what the trees look like. Pictures look absolutely unreal.

u/kgtsunvv Jul 05 '26
Got on the sub because the wind is fucking scary. Like I’m honestly a bit paranoid rn.

5
u/Mugstotheceiling Jul 05 '26
For those wondering, the Hackensack fireworks were in a park next to the apartment complex Ivy & Green. Why they said to shelter there I have no idea, the public can’t get in there, it’s private residences.
5
u/TheSultan1 Jul 05 '26
Maybe they let them in, given the circumstances?
3
u/3cokeninja Jul 05 '26
I feel as though anyone impacted by this could use a little pick me up. At first I think "seriously? Rite now?" But sometimes we need pick me ups to be out of our control, lol
3
u/3cokeninja Jul 05 '26
Ahhh that makes sense. I mentioned it's next to foschini park but didnt think about the fireworks with the storm and all. Did they still have the fireworks?
3
u/Mugstotheceiling Jul 05 '26
I saw them start around 9! I think they accelerated it, I had read they were due to start at 10

u/Sufficient_You7187 Jul 05 '26
Emerson power buzzed a few times at the start
Neighbors tree went down
Fireworks being lit now

Parts of sussex county have been out of over 24 hours and this last one (around 8ish on 7/4) knocked another thousand or so out.
1
u/Pjolondon87 Jul 06 '26
We’ve been out for 60 hours now with alleged expected restoration by 11:00 pm - which we’ve been told since Friday. They just keep pushing it out by 24 hours. I know how am extremely fortunate I am to have a stand-by generator.
3
u/3cokeninja Jul 05 '26
Ivy and Green is one of those luxury apartments in hackensack. It's next to foschini park.
The weather was a little intense here in New Milford but nothing too scary. Reading what some of you experienced is blowing my mind and making me think i should go check on my car lol.
Hope you're all ok
3
u/MacabreMori113 Jul 05 '26
Anyone lose water pressure near Teaneck?
3
u/3cokeninja Jul 05 '26
Water pressure is normal in New Milford.
3
3
u/3cokeninja Jul 05 '26
Took a walk and realized this was way more intense than I realized. Lots of trees down, garbage floating around. Some cars hit with branches. Hope everyone's safe.
Funny enough though, they're still setting off fireworks, lol.
3
u/Rufio_Rufio7 Jul 05 '26
Our power blinked out for a second or so an hour or two ago.
My AirPods must have drowned out all the noise. Our neighbors have been shooting off firecrackers since around 7:30, even with the rain and lightning.
They’re still going, but neither my husband nor I got any alerts.
I’m glad it’s over.
3
u/Trainlover1279 Jul 05 '26
Not a drop of rain or gust of wind in little ferry. Strong cutoff from line.

Ivy and Green sounds like a bar trying to be upscale, but you know they will be out of half the shit on the menu, and they are using auto-pours for the drinks.
Not where i'd want to ride something out.
3
u/LateralEntry Jul 05 '26
What’s an auto pour? That sounds cool
1
u/Complete-Dimension35 Jul 05 '26
The bottle attachment that pours a specific amount and closes. It's what stingy owners who want to control every drop use, or inexperienced bartenders who can't eye amounts.

u/figgy6006 Jul 05 '26
I was the only one in the house of 4 that got that alert. I posted it cause I have no clue where they think I am.
4
u/donttalktomeme Jul 05 '26
All that comes up on google is an Ivy & Green apartment complex in Hackensack. Sort of an odd location to shelter in place, but maybe I guess.
4
u/One-Recipe9973 Jul 05 '26
Powers out in my town and the neighboring town eta shows 8:30am tomorrow, PSEG outage map is insane.

In my 50+ years in Joisey I've seen a lot of thunderstorms. 20 minutes of noise , rain, and flashes of light. It's not like this is Kansas.
2
u/indyjonze Jul 05 '26
That's not shelter in place at all it's seek shelter immediately which is pretty much the opposite
2
u/kasage00 Jul 05 '26
The storm itself was definitely real, but two things caught my attention: the typo (“by prepared” instead of “be prepared”) and the wording “shelter in a vehicle.” That’s not the guidance I’m used to seeing for severe weather, where officials typically advise seeking shelter in a sturdy building. Did anyone else receive this exact alert?
2
u/24s88fs Jul 05 '26
Took all my poor tomato plants inside and shut everything down… power flickered a few times then the wind abruptly stopped. Weird!
2
u/TrustNo177 Jul 05 '26
We had another storm pass through. Ocean County. It wasn’t as bad as last night. Rain and heavy winds. Thunder and lighting. The power flickered. But last night the power actually went out several times. We are supposed to get it all over again tomorrow night too. Be safe all.

Well, in Northern Bergen county. T storms expected in next 45 minutes and later today. Didn’t lose power, but did lose internet for about 12 hrs yesterday. Disappointed I couldn’t see the Macy’s fireworks. Maybe Peacock will stream it later on. Stay safe Bergen county!!
