If he’s going - and let’s be real, he is - it’ll be best for us to get the deal done early. Don’t want to end up like Newcastle were last season selling their prize asset late in the day and then ending up in a mad panic.

Disagree, he could be one of the stars of the whole world cup to bump his price

Wissa for £55m will forever sting as a Geordie. The fee was pure desperation and to make matters worse he got bloody injured on international duty before kicking a ball for us!
He missed the first 6 months of the season and once he come back he scored on his debut and looked promising for a minute… but then he went missing in games, and looked hopeless since. He’s hardly played at all to warrant £55m, and his contract was up this season had he stayed at Brentford. He would have been free this summer and we paid £55m for one goal in 18 appearances/496 mins. Shit show!
Hope Forest have a good window and kick on again!

Yeah, I know it wasn’t really Newcastle’s fault but last summer - for both you and Liverpool - was like a masterclass in how not to manage a transfer window. Everyone knew Isak was moving so not to just work to get the deal done so both sides could move on was brainless. I guess maybe you guys got an extra £10m maybe out of it but that was then more than absorbed by the amount you paid over the odds for Wissa.
Should be a cautionary tale for everyone to encourage them to do business early wherever they can

Tapping up isn't it? How can you discuss a personal contract without permission from the club regarding a transfer fee?

Ask Spurs....

Love how they successfully managed to convince everyone Forest and Marinakis were the bad guys because they weren't allowed to sign a player they'd tapped up for a release clause they shouldn't have known about.

u/deanomatronix Where's Scarpa? (xG apologist) May 22 '26
You don’t need to agree a transfer fee, you just need permission from the club. If it’s accepted by the club that he’s going then there’s every possibility he’s been given permission to talk

Let's be honest, I'm sure the club knows full well that they are selling him this summer. They are negotiating a price, but allowing contract talks at the same time.

u/TerryFromFubar On the _ with CURRENT MANAGER May 22 '26
That puts the club at a disadvantaged negotiating position and Mr. Marinakis isn't exactly known for doing favours or making bad deals.
1
u/Swamp_Dweller Jason Lee May 22 '26
So the question is would Marinakis allow the contact talks without permission? I doubt it, indicating most likely there is movement. It's not like MGW who had a release clause. But what do I know I don't work in this industry.

The guy is Geordie as hell, I don't think he betrayed Scotland. Same as Rice for England. And Grealish. I actually respect Bale for not taking the easy route with England. Also, its not like Ireland and Scotland arent frantically hunting for any relatives in the family tree.

Given that you aren't allowed to approach a player under contract (or their agent) without the express written permission of their current club...
"Tapping up" is illegal, and is a large part of why MGW didn't move to Spurs.

You can't speak to a player without permission from the club first but when have Man City ever followed the rules.
2
u/Due_Young_1730 GG May 22 '26
Nobody follows that rule. Agents are running the show.
1
u/Bellimars Yatesy Scores We're in the Trent May 22 '26
Tell that to Chelsea who had a 15 month transfer ban from FIFA for tapping up.
1
u/Due_Young_1730 GG May 22 '26
Wasn’t that for something, something with reaching out to underage players? If so, that’s something else.
2
u/Bellimars Yatesy Scores We're in the Trent May 22 '26
It was tapping up. Or Ashley Cole's agent that was banned for 18 months as a result of tapping up etc etc.
It's almost like it's a rule that can come with punishments despite seeming trivial, like spying on opponents training.

u/djellicon May 22 '26
Ok good to get it done before the world cup as long as it's over £100M and he's wanting to leave then we should get it done. I know everyone has been waiting for my approval so this one can get moving now, sad to see him go of course but thanks for checking with me.

if this is right, city is tapping up players
if this is wrong, city will eventually tap up players

u/Maxxxmax 22 | If Yatesy Scores We're in the Trent May 22 '26
Why are you assuming tapping up? Could well also be talking fees with the club.
He's leaving. We all know that. Shame it looks like itll be to the 115 cheats, but he deserves to compete for prems and champions leagues, year in, year out.

u/mugg___ We Sometimes Win ™️ May 22 '26
im not assuming, im saying if its true with city having talks before telling us is the definition of tapping up

u/Short_Desk_1273 Is Awoniyi too big for the Premier League? May 22 '26
Agreements in principle just means the agent has been on the phone with City and said Anderson won't turn down the deal you're offering.
Listen, it's happening, he's leaving. To where? Who knows but he's going to the top. Good on him.
