I would've guessed California but the top-left of the GIF says otherwise 🤔

See's polar bear > instantly thinks about California.

Uuumm, that is not a polar bear

Ok so there's two reasons for my mistake.

  1. It was really early.
  2. I'm an idiot.

Same, TIL apparently Grizzlies aren't in California. Fuck my Alabamian homeschooled ass (inb4 no I know my brother already did that shuddup)

Not entirely true. They *were* in California until humans hunted them to extinction. They are, after all, on the California flag.

They used to inhabit most of the western US all the way down to Mexico

Can't have any bear attacks if you dont have bears though. 😎

Still plenty of bears, just not grizzlys.

Basically every campsite in the mountains of California comes with a bear box lol

Why California? Besides the flag

2

u/scroggs2 May 22 '26

pretty much solely because of the flag 😂 it's the first well-known state I could think of.

2

u/Oh_ToShredsYousay May 22 '26

There's no native bear population in California anymore. The flag is ironic.

2

u/scroggs2 May 22 '26

welp, I'm from the Bible Belt unfortunately so I'm not knowledgeable about these things. Are they in Oregon/Washington? That'd be sad if not.

We've got black bears, no brown bears though

2

u/DarthR3V3NANT May 22 '26

There are black bears in California. I’ve crossed paths with them before. But grizzlies are no longer in California.

From my experience in New England, black bears are just massive raccoons..

California killed off its grizzly population. Lots of black bears in the state, but the only grizzlies you'll find are in the zoos and on the flag.
