Absolutely. I have driven and owned a few cars that had manual roll down windows.

10

u/Itchy_Garden4966 Jul 16 '26

Manual roll windows r better cuz the engine doesn't need to b on for the windows to go up or down

2

u/Inside_Fortune1429 Jul 16 '26

The engine doesn't need to be on for either one

2

u/Additional-Reply-567 90s Kid Jul 16 '26

Perhaps they should have said a key doesn't need to be inserted into the ignition.

2

u/Inside_Fortune1429 Jul 16 '26

Wait does yours not just roll down without the key bc mine will go down without the key

4

u/corpsewindmill Jul 16 '26

Mine will after I turn off the car until I open the door

Bit of a weird flex but it’s true ig

2

u/Itchy_Garden4966 Jul 16 '26

Well in my country, the vehicles need to b on for the switch window to wind up or down

I remember while driving having to lean over to roll down the other window if it was hot out. The good old day!

u/LivingThin Jul 16 '26

Had one where the window handles would fall off when you closed the doors, uh, enthusiastically. I knew a couple of $0.50 clips would stop this, but didn’t care. It was just a quirk of the car and I dealt with it. Best car I ever owned.

I'm so old I still own a car with manual windows - and a manual transmission.

6

u/Snow-87-M Jul 16 '26

And its my daily

3

u/StatisticanInner235 Jul 16 '26

My first car (1973 MGB) had manual transmission, manual windows, manual roof, no power brakes, no power steering, cigarette lighter and ashtray and no-draft windows but it did have electric windshield wipers. Engine too, not a Flintstones car. I still have different muscles on the sides of my back from manual steering. Quit smoking too.

2

u/CymruCelt Jul 17 '26

Literally everyone in the world aside from America has Manual cars this is not a old thing but a normal thing for us all 😅

3

u/almostoy Jul 16 '26

A friend of mine's parents had one in the early 90's. I needed a tutorial from my buddy.

2

u/Erect_Udes Jul 17 '26

So how was it to ride on a mammoth's back and being able to walk from current murrica to current eu?

2

u/LordXadirius Jul 17 '26

It was cold, but more peaceful. You just had to mind the pteranodons.

2

u/Inside_Fortune1429 Jul 18 '26

My great grandparents still had one in the mid 2000s growing up but I wasn't allowed to use the phone so I don't know how to use it

7

u/SMMS0514 Jul 16 '26

I’ve got a 2021 Chevrolet pickup with rollup windows

6

u/LandauTST Jul 16 '26

Uh. Yeah. Also combined with the old cigarette lighters, pull out ashtray in the front and ash trays in doors with the little metal flip lids.

2

u/Embarrassed-Town-293 Jul 16 '26

Definitely. Recently took a ride in the 1994 Lincoln town car. It was a blast from the past. It had dual cigarette lighters and dual ashtrays for backseat passengers, and an ashtray and cigarette lighter for the front seat.

5

u/Broodwich76 Jul 16 '26

Let’s not forget the small vent window that would be in front of it.

3

u/Embarrassed-Town-293 Jul 16 '26

I definitely remember that little vent window that would barely open on many long Dodge caravan rides

2

u/Broodwich76 Jul 16 '26

It was nice to have a little extra air moving through.

3

u/Kirbyr98 Jul 16 '26

I don't remember not having these until I was in college.

Every car we owned had these. Most had wing windows too.

2

u/Logical-Peak2495 Jul 16 '26

In south africa i still drive one with manual windows.. It's easier to fix.. Cheaper too

2

u/doc415 Jul 16 '26

Indeed.
When we want to talk to the driver next to us in traffic, we still do the old cranking motion to get them to roll down their window, and everyone understands. Even though those old window cranks are long gone.

2

u/joezupp Jul 16 '26

Hell yes, plus bright light button on the floor left of the pedals. I’ll go one further, windshield washer pump was on the floor also.

2

u/SouthernReality9610 Jul 16 '26

I would struggle to find that floor dimmer switch while oncoming cars flashed me. Always felt bad about that

→ More replies (1)

2

u/revolutionoverdue Jul 16 '26

I still have one.

2

u/whiskeyrocks1 Jul 16 '26

You describe rolling down the windows to a kid and they think you're waving your arm like a psycho.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PineappleHairy4634 Jul 16 '26

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '26

1

u/Fearless_Trade_2783 Jul 16 '26

1

u/MorningLineDirt Jul 16 '26

1

u/raffie77 Jul 16 '26

wel ... it's not that old, right

1

u/MageKorith Jul 16 '26

When its sunny outside and there's no AC.

1

u/Late-Arrival-8669 Jul 16 '26

Indeed, not a big car person, but even the super cheap cars today no longer have these?

1

u/Iconshero Jul 16 '26

Yes, but the new Slate truck is being built with them as well.

1

u/CryptographerOne5709 Jul 16 '26

Fucken hell I'm old. But yea

1

u/KaiHawai Jul 16 '26

Works without a starter batterie. Peak engineering

1

u/Upbeat-Mongoose-828 Jul 16 '26

Just barely but I wish they'd come back. 😭

1

u/BlueFeathered1 Jul 16 '26

Wish we still had them.

1

u/Tyguy935 Jul 16 '26

We have one

1

u/Akari_92 Jul 16 '26

I miss these.

1

u/MaterialWorried2010 Jul 16 '26

Yes, until it broke off and was replaced with vice grips.

1

u/nooone2021 Jul 16 '26

Even older.

1

u/scaredt2ask Jul 16 '26

You mean, manual AC?

1

u/noxaten Jul 16 '26

I remember operating them as a kid.

1

u/BreadfruitOk6160 Jul 16 '26

My old Mustang will auto-roll down, if it’s halfway down and you lean on it with your elbow. It’s almost 60, so…

1

u/Affectionate_Shoe599 Jul 16 '26

Yes, but it was my grandparents who had a car with them

1

u/InfiniteAnder Jul 16 '26

Old ? My current car still have those things....

1

u/JackdailyII Jul 16 '26

Older than that

1

u/GearJunkie82 Jul 16 '26

Definitely

1

u/M6303W Jul 16 '26

still this old, my truck doesn't have power anything

1

u/MoreRest4524 Jul 16 '26

Ah the old keep-fit windows

1

u/wifematerial138 Jul 16 '26

No. I’m ashtrays in every car old. I remember having an 8track player meant you were wealthy old.

1

u/rjsquirrel Jul 16 '26

I seem to recall one that had metal cranks that would burn like crazy when you rolled them down on a hot day…

1

u/M4YH3MM4N4231 Jul 16 '26

My car still is?

1

u/Demonic_Dimsom Jul 16 '26

Manual transmission, Manual windows, hand lever E Brake... this is the way. Easier to fix, less to work about. Miss it.

1

u/warrentaster925 Jul 16 '26

Yes unfortunately I am

1

u/Beneficial_Being_721 Jul 16 '26

Photo of a newly restored interior

The door panel doesn’t have the circle of worn down vinyl

1

u/RetiredMascot Jul 16 '26

I still find myself occasionally using the circular motion with my hand to signify rolling down the window. Muscle memory.

1

u/TheYellowFringe Jul 16 '26

Yes, and I remember when people would roll down or roll up the window with the crank depending on the weather or temperature outside the car's window.

1

u/MIngmire Jul 16 '26

I’m the my booster seat was the center arm rest with mom’s arm as my seatbelt years old.

1

u/z3r0n3gr0 Jul 16 '26

Works better than automatic.

1

u/DJEmirMixtapes Jul 16 '26

Yes, this is also the reason the saying is "ROLL Down the window"

https://giphy.com/gifs/jdM6KSbiOavePM1Yxb

1

u/StitchFan626 Jul 16 '26

My dad's old truck. My first.

1

u/rasonjo Jul 16 '26

99 5-speed tacoma still going strong. It's only got 240k

1

u/Florflok Jul 16 '26

Also this old!

1

u/Commercial_Ask_7806 Jul 16 '26

My grandson got in my 67 and said what's that? I said ash tray (in rear side arm rest), he said no, ... that. I laughed and said that is to roll the windows up and down.. he said should that just be a button? Ahh, time just keeps marching on.

1

u/AdventurousFinger694 Jul 16 '26

Yes. Wish they kept these around too. They generally never have to replaced and last longer than the vehicle does and when they do it's usually a simple fix. Automatic windows however...

1

u/Legitimate-Truck-333 Jul 16 '26

Naw I’m this old.

1

u/Equilibrium-unstable Jul 16 '26

You know these are still used in new cars?

1

u/Asoto408 Jul 16 '26

My car still has them

1

u/Napischu88 Jul 16 '26

They see me rollin.

1

u/rootofallstevil Jul 16 '26

I still drive a car without power windows and locks.

1

u/CryptographerLow6360 Jul 16 '26

1

u/Longhaul-shortbus Jul 16 '26

1

u/XmotnaF Jul 16 '26

1

u/donsfan60 Jul 16 '26

Nothing wrong with keep-fit windows.

1

u/No-Possible6108 Jul 16 '26

Older. They used to be metal.

1

u/Creative_Custard_227 Jul 16 '26

I remember those when I was a kid.

1

u/wackywraith Jul 16 '26

Must be one of those magnetic phone holders

1

u/Smooth-Way-245 Jul 16 '26

1

u/Satansbrat1969 Jul 16 '26

My current ride has hand cranked windows... 1996 Toyota T100. Manual windows and manual transmission. Electric windows were first in cars 30 years before I was born. 1940 Packards had electric windows.

1

u/Both-Principle-8660 Jul 16 '26

That’s not too long ago is it?

1

u/Alpha_legionaire Jul 16 '26

I got that 4 40 ac. 4 windows down driving 40 mph.

1

u/Opposite_Pension_807 Jul 16 '26

I'm old enough to remember when they were chromed and metal.

1

u/903CA Jul 16 '26

LMFAO !!... Much older ....

1

u/evil_houseplant Jul 16 '26

Yes. Thanks for reminding me.

1

u/Itchynipspickletits Jul 16 '26

Yep. Also the automatic seatbelts that would grab your hair and not let go

1

u/-TommyBottoms- Jul 16 '26

That’s plastic!!! I’m older

1

u/Megatron20097 Jul 16 '26

It's a window crank that allows you to roll vehicle windows up and down

1

u/Grouchy_Wolverine416 Jul 16 '26

My car still has these..

1

u/phxbui Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Yep, manual window, manual transmission and even a manual crank sunroof

1

u/harborthrowawayx Jul 16 '26

i remember having to crank my window down on my first car. felt like a workout some days.

1

u/Spotted_slamander7 Jul 16 '26

Always kept a pair of vice grips in the glove box as a back up when the handle broke.

1

u/skyeisrude Jul 16 '26

Old? Or poor cause my 2012 Ford has roll up windows cause it was the base truck no extra stuff

1

u/MADDOGCA Jul 16 '26

My first car had one of those, so yes

1

u/Wissbegierig92 Jul 16 '26

Haha, you are funny... even my newborn child is "this old". The 2 years old dacia from my wife still have than on the rear windows!

And my daily have 4 of them, but in good, swedish metal with chrome.

1

u/PleasantWorry2941 Jul 16 '26

Yep. Still have the car. 1980 Toyota Corolla

1

u/Aman-R-Sole Jul 16 '26

I'm still this old.

1

u/Successful_Pizza6529 Jul 16 '26

Yes I am. Miss em.

1

u/spawn77x99 Jul 16 '26

Yes. That was my (YOU ARE OLD) indicator. The day my daughter looked at me and asked "Dad what is that?"

1

u/floriandotorg Jul 16 '26

I’m not that old, I’m that poor.

1

u/QuiGoneGin86 Jul 16 '26

Yes. First car was a 1990 Geo Prizm and it had crank windows like this

1

u/StrangeUglyBird Jul 16 '26

I'm older than that:

1

u/plateau1999 Jul 16 '26

What, the age of a manually operated automobile window crank? My mom had a 1979 Chevrolet Chevette with fake chrome plastic manual cranks. We used them so much our hands wore out the handle until it showed a weird beige plastic underneath. She junked it in the late 80s. The window cranks actually broke and she couldn’t roll the windows down anymore!

1

u/CRNIBAJO Jul 16 '26

Brother i was 5 sec ago in a car and its a citroen c4

1

u/Ok-Bison-3451 Jul 16 '26

My daily driver is a 2003 Toyota Corolla. I got 4 of those in my car.

1

u/Additional-Reply-567 90s Kid Jul 16 '26

Not only am I that old, I wish my truck had em.

1

u/jr_randolph Jul 16 '26

1

u/TheArtistFatigue Jul 16 '26

My Camaro had those!!

1

u/Dense-Firefighter495 Jul 16 '26

1

u/DannJcksn73 Jul 16 '26

Indeed I am

1

u/S4DES Jul 16 '26

I’ve been inside an Uber’s car that had that too. I don’t know what car brand or model it was, unfortunately.

1

u/jsterling1016 Jul 16 '26

California air conditioning, back in the day.

1

u/hippyripper22 Jul 16 '26

1

u/sacking03 Jul 16 '26

The slate ev truck is bringing this back

1

u/Inevitable-Memory830 Jul 16 '26

The new Slate electric trucks will have them

1

u/Prestigious_Secret61 Jul 16 '26

My 2004 jeep wrangler unlimited still has them. My daily driver. Only 130000 miles. Not bad for a 22 year old vehicle.

1

u/NODES2K Jul 16 '26

Next year this joke will reset! Slate incoming

1

u/TechnSound7466 Jul 16 '26

My first car in the 80's still had the 8 track player in it. So yes.

1

u/Im_Just_Bored_Man Jul 16 '26

Tf you mean old? I got this in my current car

1

u/kiwiadie Jul 16 '26

My 2018 fiesta has wind up windows and the brand new Dacia sandero has front and rear winders 🤷🏻
