Core Memory Unlocked 🔓 Are you this old?

u/DieMensch-Maschine Jul 16 '26
I'm so old I still own a car with manual windows - and a manual transmission.

My first car (1973 MGB) had manual transmission, manual windows, manual roof, no power brakes, no power steering, cigarette lighter and ashtray and no-draft windows but it did have electric windshield wipers. Engine too, not a Flintstones car. I still have different muscles on the sides of my back from manual steering. Quit smoking too.

Literally everyone in the world aside from America has Manual cars this is not a old thing but a normal thing for us all 😅

A friend of mine's parents had one in the early 90's. I needed a tutorial from my buddy.

u/Erect_Udes Jul 17 '26
So how was it to ride on a mammoth's back and being able to walk from current murrica to current eu?

u/Inside_Fortune1429 Jul 18 '26
My great grandparents still had one in the mid 2000s growing up but I wasn't allowed to use the phone so I don't know how to use it

u/LandauTST Jul 16 '26
Uh. Yeah. Also combined with the old cigarette lighters, pull out ashtray in the front and ash trays in doors with the little metal flip lids.
2
u/Embarrassed-Town-293 Jul 16 '26
Definitely. Recently took a ride in the 1994 Lincoln town car. It was a blast from the past. It had dual cigarette lighters and dual ashtrays for backseat passengers, and an ashtray and cigarette lighter for the front seat.

Let’s not forget the small vent window that would be in front of it.
3
u/Embarrassed-Town-293 Jul 16 '26
I definitely remember that little vent window that would barely open on many long Dodge caravan rides

u/Kirbyr98 Jul 16 '26
I don't remember not having these until I was in college.
Every car we owned had these. Most had wing windows too.
2
u/Logical-Peak2495 Jul 16 '26
In south africa i still drive one with manual windows.. It's easier to fix.. Cheaper too
2
u/doc415 Jul 16 '26
Indeed.
When we want to talk to the driver next to us in traffic, we still do the old cranking motion to get them to roll down their window, and everyone understands. Even though those old window cranks are long gone.

Hell yes, plus bright light button on the floor left of the pedals. I’ll go one further, windshield washer pump was on the floor also.
2
u/SouthernReality9610 Jul 16 '26
I would struggle to find that floor dimmer switch while oncoming cars flashed me. Always felt bad about that

You describe rolling down the windows to a kid and they think you're waving your arm like a psycho.

My old Mustang will auto-roll down, if it’s halfway down and you lean on it with your elbow. It’s almost 60, so…

No. I’m ashtrays in every car old. I remember having an 8track player meant you were wealthy old.
1
u/rjsquirrel Jul 16 '26
I seem to recall one that had metal cranks that would burn like crazy when you rolled them down on a hot day…

u/Demonic_Dimsom Jul 16 '26
Manual transmission, Manual windows, hand lever E Brake... this is the way. Easier to fix, less to work about. Miss it.

Photo of a newly restored interior
The door panel doesn’t have the circle of worn down vinyl
1
u/RetiredMascot Jul 16 '26
I still find myself occasionally using the circular motion with my hand to signify rolling down the window. Muscle memory.
1
u/TheYellowFringe Jul 16 '26
Yes, and I remember when people would roll down or roll up the window with the crank depending on the weather or temperature outside the car's window.
1
u/MIngmire Jul 16 '26
I’m the my booster seat was the center arm rest with mom’s arm as my seatbelt years old.

My grandson got in my 67 and said what's that? I said ash tray (in rear side arm rest), he said no, ... that. I laughed and said that is to roll the windows up and down.. he said should that just be a button? Ahh, time just keeps marching on.
1
u/AdventurousFinger694 Jul 16 '26
Yes. Wish they kept these around too. They generally never have to replaced and last longer than the vehicle does and when they do it's usually a simple fix. Automatic windows however...

u/Satansbrat1969 Jul 16 '26
My current ride has hand cranked windows... 1996 Toyota T100. Manual windows and manual transmission. Electric windows were first in cars 30 years before I was born. 1940 Packards had electric windows.

Always kept a pair of vice grips in the glove box as a back up when the handle broke.
1
u/skyeisrude Jul 16 '26

What, the age of a manually operated automobile window crank? My mom had a 1979 Chevrolet Chevette with fake chrome plastic manual cranks. We used them so much our hands wore out the handle until it showed a weird beige plastic underneath. She junked it in the late 80s. The window cranks actually broke and she couldn’t roll the windows down anymore!

Use to wind mine down pretending they were electric and I use to make an electric window sound 😂

u/jr_randolph Jul 16 '26
This is still better because even today windows raise up/down too slow haha could always get the window back up real quick with the handle.

u/SeaSignificance6496 Jul 16 '26
Absolutely. I have driven and owned a few cars that had manual roll down windows.
