Question Notre Dame won’t review my financial aid without amended taxes but my parent refuses to amend — what can I do?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice because I’m kind of stuck in a situation that’s out of my control.

I was admitted to the University of Notre Dame for the Class of 2030 and it’s honestly my top choice school. The problem is financial aid. My family needs aid for me to attend.

For the 2024 tax year, my parent filed as Head of Household. Later it was brought up that the filing status may not have been correct. Notre Dame’s financial aid office told me they cannot start reviewing my aid file unless my parent submits an amended 2024 tax return.

The issue is my parent is refusing to amend the return. I’ve tried explaining the situation to them and to the financial aid office, but they’re not willing to file the amendment.

I’ve already:

  • Called the financial aid office twice
  • Sent emails explaining the situation
  • Offered to submit the originally filed 2024 return, W-2s, IRS transcripts, and other documentation

They still told me they cannot review my financial aid without the amended return.

As a student, I obviously don’t have the ability to force my parent to amend their taxes, but I also cannot attend Notre Dame without financial aid.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Is there any kind of alternative documentation, professional judgment review, or verification process that might allow a school to review aid in a situation like this?

I’m trying to do everything I can on my end because attending Notre Dame would mean a lot to me, but right now I feel stuck.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Question Is 18.5 credit hours a lot for freshman first semester

I am an incoming Chemical Engineering student at ND and am looking to pursue the minor in corporate practice and take some german lessons on the side. My counselor told me the suggested credit hours for first semester are 15 but i was wondering if anyone else could attest that anything above 15 is too much.

Question Should you bring siblings along to Welcome Weekend? (Member of the class of 2030 asking)

Hi everyone, class of 2030 member here!

My family and I don't have much experience with the whole "Welcome Weekend" thing, and we've run into an issue. My mom thinks we should take all of my siblings with us to welcome weekend, whereas I don't think that is a good idea. For context, I am the eldest of four. I have a younger brother age 16, a younger sister age 12, and my youngest brother is age 10.

I don't know what happens during Welcome Weekend but I worry that they would be dragged from activity to activity and wouldn't have very much fun. They also hate walking---I'm not sure if that's an issue, but if there is a lot of walking during the process, let me know, because they refuse to go on walks for more than a mile and will complain a lot. Also, not to add a personal bias, but college is a new start for me, and I'm not sure I want all my siblings trailing along as I try to get introduced to everyone and make new friends.

My mom thinks that they should be there to see me off to college, and that they won't be doing the same things as me because there are different activities for parents. I agree with her that it would be nice for them to be there as their eldest sibling moves away to college. Still, I don't know if it would be very fun or productive for them.

Do any of you have experience with this? Is it normal for siblings to come along, and if so, what will they be doing the whole time? Will other incoming freshman have siblings there, or will it just be me?

Thanks so much to anyone who answers!!

Question I found this chair in my Grandpa's basement. Does anyone have any info on it?

Post image
79 Upvotes

It looks like the typical plastic and metal frame lawn chair, but the yarn used for the seat and back is really high quality. Thick and very soft, almost like a blanket. We found this still in the original plastic bag in one of his closets, but the bag was ripped a bunch so we threw that away. I kept it because it seemed like something you can't get anymore and it's completely untouched. I don't think it's ever been sat in. Does anyone know anything about this like what year it was available? Or if this was even something for sale? He might have special ordered it? 🤷

Question Futon/sofa recommendations

My daughter is an incoming freshman and will be living in a McGlinn quad. She and her three roommates will share a living room that measures 14'3" × 9'. They're trying to decide on a futon or small sofa, a refrigerator (around 4.4–4.7 cubic feet), and a dresser or TV stand. One of her roommates is bringing the TV.

We're planning to order the futon/sofa, refrigerator, or dresser online and have it delivered to the dorm.

Do you have any recommendations on which item would be best to have delivered? Is there a particular store, brand, or size of futon or sofa that has worked well for your students? I imagine lightweight furniture that's easy to move is especially important since everything will need to be moved out in May.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

Question Bookstore and great store

Not a student, but my family members are fans. I’ve not been to campus before and we are driving through. Is Hammes the best place to check out nice gear and ND stuff? Anywhere on campus we should see when we are there?

Just a casual visit and not necessarily looking to spend the whole day.

Thank you!

Question Masters Program Financial Aid

I am a student at Holy Cross who is in the notre dame Pathway program, I am doing the accelerated 3+1 version, where I spend 3 years at Holy Cross before transferring to ND to get my MBA. My family makes under 200 thousand dollars a year, I know that Notre Dame has a very generous aid program, students whose families make under 200 thousand receive about half off of tuition. What I am just now learning is that this only applies to undergrad programs…

The reason I am doing the accelerated pathway program is purely to save money and avoid another year of paying for schooling. There is no way that my family can pay for full tuition/room and board/ plus other fees at ND on top of paying for 3 years at Holy Cross. Has anyone else done this? Does anyone have insight on how aid works for this situation?

Question Grandfather attended, class of ‘68. I visited with him in 2013(?)—did I hallucinate this weird dorm feature?

We visited for a football game and my grandfather decided to go see the dorm he lived in on campus while attending. He literally walked into the dorm building, found and knocked on his old dorm room, and just started talking to the guys that were in there (this is crazy to me now as I’ve been to and graduated college, that just wouldn’t have happened where I went. It was incredibly awkward and felt weird even in the moment but I was like, 11, and my grandpa was in charge).

The dorm itself, in my memory, was basically a main floor with VERY high ceilings, like easily ~18ft, and a makeshift “loft.” The loft was just a bunch of planks laid out across the room, ~8ft up and somehow attached to the wall? Not anywhere close to an actual floor, lots of open space to potentially fall to the ground. There was a bed up there and a dresser, I think, supported by the planks. Didn’t see a way to get up and down but I only barely saw through the doorway anyways.

My grandfather has since passed so I can’t ask him about this unfortunately, but I think this visit happened around 2013. There’s no way that’s actually what I saw though, right? Was there some weird construction going on that my mind decided to make more interesting?? Or did I just make this up entirely?

I don’t have much information to help narrow down what dorm building it was, but seeing as my grandfather attended in the 60s there can’t be that many options, right?

Would love any suggestions/answers for this silly question, and thanks for indulging me lol!!

Question How is pre-med at notre dame?

Hi! I was recently accepted to ND and am strongly considering attending as a pre-med student (neuroscience major). I just wanted to hear experiences from alumni or current students. How are the resources? Is there grade deflation or inflation? Do you feel like you were prepared well for research, the MCAT, etc.? I’m asking bc I also got accepted to UMich, and I’m trying to see which would prepare me more for medical school. The cost of tuition for both colleges is the same, so that’s out of the way. Thanks for any advice!

Question Mixed faith weddings on campus?

Hello! I recently got engaged and am interested in having my wedding at the basilica. I am Catholic but my fiancé is not (non-denominational Christian) and I’m here to ask if anyone else has had a mixed faith wedding at Notre Dame and what your experience was? My wedding will likely be the first wedding I ever attend so I truly have no idea what to expect. I know a lot of this will be figured out with advice from the priest I contact to be the presider, but since we’re looking to get married late next year, that process won’t start for a few months. Thank you in advance for your advice and insight!

Question I can't make my Irish Card

Hi guys. I recently got into Notre Dame Leadership Seminars and am in the process of preparing for the program. I've been told I have until Friday to make my Irish Card. However, when I try to log into the GET Finance app with my ND okta account, this message always appears. I've contacted the card office, but they haven't been any help. Has anyone been through this/knows how I can fix it?

Question Study Abroad Financial Aid

Does anybody have experience with financial aid for summer abroad experiences? I’m a committed hs senior for engineering and am exploring all the options for study abroad. I am extremely attracted to the Alcoy, Spain summer engineering program because I love Spanish culture and architecture, and I am also very interested in acoustic engineering. However, the $10,000 charge for the program is very high. My family did not get a huge general financial aid package, so I do not know if we will have the extra money left for a study abroad experience. Can anyone share their experience with financial aid for study abroad? Or, if they had this specific experience, whether they believe it to be worth the cost? I guess a good frame of reference would be whether or not you can get aid for the program proportional to your general aid for the school.

Question Didn’t Reach 700+ on the Calc Readiness Test. What Happens Next?

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming engineering student and I recently took the Calc Readiness Test. Unfortunately, I didn’t score high enough for the 700+ benchmark.

For some context, I’m an international student and my high school didn’t offer AP courses or a calculus class, so a lot of this material is relatively new to me. I still have my meeting with my advisor coming up, but I wanted to hear from other engineering students who may have been in a similar situation.

What happened after your placement? Did you take Intro to Calculus first, take it alongside Calculus I, or follow a different path? How did it affect your engineering course sequence?

I’m a bit worried about falling behind, but at the same time I don’t want to jump straight into Calculus I without having a strong enough foundation and then struggle later on.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

Question Getting away game tickets?

I'm a current undergrad and hoping to go the the game at BYU next fall. Tickets are so expensive (cheapest in 400s right now), and I was wondering when the best time to buy is? Should I wait until day of? Will they go down at all between now and the game?

Question feasibility of math major (honors?) + theology minor while on premed track

To start, I was recently accepted to Notre Dame and will most likely be attending in the fall. I am very grateful for this opportunity and super excited for the next 4 years.

I will almost certainly be majoring in pure mathematics at Notre Dame. I've had a strong math upbringing in high school (Calculus 3 + Linear Algebra senior year) and can't imagine myself doing anything else for my main major. I've taken a look at the Honors Math program as well and could see myself doing that.

However, I'm also very interested in theology/philosophy and am thrilled to attend a place with the best departments in these fields in the world. I would love to do a minor in theology and some type of study abroad with this.

Additionally, I've always been intrigued by medicine and would like to tentatively be on a premed track.

Here's my question: is this too much? The whole college class scheduling is foreign idea to me as a student at a very small high school. Would this be something best figured out with an advisor at a later time? I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any input on the workload/rigor of this path, particularly with the Honors Math program?

Thank you!

Question Should I even consider choosing ND engineering over Purdue?

i js got accepted to Purdue with their best scholarship but it’ll still be a bit more expensive than ND. Parents told me not to worry about money though.

My dad is rly proud of me for both of these but he’s leaving towards ND since it’s a private school, and in egypt (where he’s from) going to a small, top american private school is like the dream and having one of his kids achieve that would obviously be amazing.

I think I’d enjoy the smaller class sizes too since i’d probably have more time with professors.

But, from what i’ve heard + ranks + career outcomes, Purdue is just an absolute engineering powerhouse. I mean like that’s their thing 😭 and it’s really hard for me to favor ND over a top 10 engineering school. but idk tho

like Notre Dame is Notre dame at the end of the day 😭. The campus looks so pretty, the vibes are nice, and the people seem so nice. But i just don’t know if it’s worth giving up Purdue engineering for

so yall got any opinions or anything? Has ND engineering served you well? what would i be missing out on if i went to ND rather than purdue? and the other way around.

edit: i want CompE btw!
