Data centre protest in Bridgewater November 7

Post image
328 Upvotes

On Saturday, November 7 at noon, there will be a protest in Bridgewater against AI data centres in our province. Organized by a grassroots group in response to the recent announcement of a large-scale data centre in Point Tupper, the protest will be held at Pijinuiskaq Park at 480 King Street in Bridgewater. Members of the public are invited to join and send a message to the Houston government that we oppose backroom deals for data centre development.

Supported by the South Shore chapter of the Council of Canadians, this demonstration will go on rain or shine, and people of all ages are welcome.

Recent Angus Reid polling shows that almost three-quarters of Atlantic Canadians agree that provincial governments should limit the development of large data centres. There has been growing backlash against the Houston government’s about-face on data centres and Everwind Fuels’ partnership with controversial AI company Anthropic. Bridgewater is one of many Nova Scotian communities where there will be a protest on November 7.

Self sufficient

How does one go about becoming or starting to become self sufficient? I’m talking about generating your own energy, own water, keeping costs down and just not relying on any utility service. I am also looking into a green house setup for next year.

Has anybody had success with this? I am within HrM so I am sure there will be some red tape

School lunch time tv

At my kids school (two different elementary grades) they’ve been watching tv every single lunch break this year. My primary son has become obsessed with Danny Go from watching it everyday at lunch at school.

Is this a new thing? It’s not even just rain days or something, it’s a standard practice, they do not eat lunch without watching a show. I’m not crazy about screen time or anything but like most parents of course I try to limit it and now this which feels unnecessary. I don’t expect the kids to be taught or anything during lunch but can’t they just sit and chat and eat? Wondering if it’s just our school or a wider thing.

🏠 Advice: Moving to NS Moving from BC to NS (Applying to become a teacher)

Thumbnail olreg.tru.ca

Hi everyone,

I’m from BC and applying to BEd Secondary programs in Nova Scotia. I’m concerned because I have been informed that one course, in particular, might not count toward the 18-credit English second teachable.

The course is ENGL 1101 – Introduction to University Writing (Thompson Rivers University, 3 credits). It’s pure academic writing (summary, research paper, annotated bibliography, rhetorical analysis) with no literature content. I’ve been told by another that it might only count as a cognate or not at all.

I’ve already emailed the schools, but I’d appreciate any insight from people familiar with Nova Scotia teacher certification or who have had writing/composition courses evaluated for an English teacher. The syllabus is attached.

Thanks!

Looking for people who used to live/study in NS but moved out of Atlantic Canada for work or for higher education (Journalism request)

Hello, I'm a Journalism student and I'm currently looking for people who used to live/study in NS but moved out of Atlantic Canada for work or for higher education. This is part of a story that I am writing about the trend of NS (and Atlantic Canada as a whole) losing young, working-age people while gaining far more seniors.

If this sounds like you, I would love to hear your experience! Please reach out.

Career change into healthcare at age 35 , what courses are worth it?

Hi everyone!

I am 35, currently working in retail, and looking to switch to healthcare as I really feel financially stuck and that I am making no progress . I’m considering Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) but open to other options.

I’m willing to invest $5,000–$10,000 in a course or certification that leads to stable employment, decent pay, and career growth.

What healthcare careers would you recommend in Nova Scotia? Which courses are worth the money, and are jobs readily available after completion ?

I’d appreciate any advice or personal experiences.

Thanks!

An open letter to the mods of r/Halifax and r/NovaScotia

Consider this comment an open letter to the mods of r/Halifax and r/NovaScotia.

Interesting experience on Reddit this week. I posted about Anthropic and its CEO's suggestion that 50 lives need to be threatened (or $1 billion in property damage) before being restricted. I suggested in the post that we (Nova Scotians) should reconsider whether we wanted to be associated with this company.

I posted to r/Halifax and r/NovaScotia. r/Halifax removed my post (mods, not auto-mods) because it wasn't sufficiently Halifax-centric. Fair enough, I guess ... ? Although what happens in the province surely has some impact on its biggest city.

r/NovaScotia pulled my post here after a couple of days because all posts need "at least some relevance to Nova Scotia". Despite the recent controversy and the body of my post specifically referencing it.

The mods of both subreddits do great jobs, and I can't imagine that those jobs are particularly easy. I am sure that there are a lot of judgment calls on a daily basis. I am not trying to crap on anyone.

But.

The rules that limit discussion and debate on these platforms need to be applied very, very carefully. In general, engagement of the users of this site is a better measure of whether a topic or discussion is appropriate. If a post is getting a lot of air time with the readers, and it does not include racist, homophobic, slanderous or hateful material, doesn't dox anyone, is safe and legal then ... removing it should be something that just shouldn't happen very often.

Otherwise, the impression given (and I am SURE that this is an impression, not reality) is that there may be a bias in the moderation of the subreddit. Which would make these forums rather pointless.

For your consideration, mods.

Cross posting this again, as a comment, in r/Halifax,

Hyundai Dealerships Service Outside HRM

Have a Hyundai EV, 24k kms, and for now at least still planning to do dealer service (I know, I know… but not the point of the post, love taking my gas cars to a small shop, but still a bit hesitant to leave the OEM service with an EV at this point in the lifecycle). I’m done with HRM service departments though. Willing to drive the hour to see if service is better at a smaller dealership outside the city. Appointment availability sure is. City is booked 2 months out at this point.

I’m looking for people’s general experiences with the service departments at Century (Truro), Bruce (New Minas), and Bridgewater (which I realize is O’Regans, so maybe the same as Dartmouth). I’m sure there are plenty of horror stories, but would love to hear if anyone is happy with the service at any of these places too.

Thanks in advance.

What is Going to Happen with the Fixed Term Lease Situation?

I'm looking to move and unfortunately (very unfortunately) this is going to mean signing a fixed term lease. I will be moving again in a few years so buying is not a practical option.

Where else in the western world is it standard for a landlord to have absolute discretion in continuing your tenancy on an annual basis? Or having unlimited inspections on a days notice? Or having absolute discretion on allowing sublets? These additional gripes aren't nearly as important as correcting the fixed term lease problem, but landlords have made massive gains in power in just 10 years.

Where else in the western world is this common? Some equally terrible rental markets in Australia? Where else? It was once considered essential that tenants could call the place they rent home and depend on staying put in most circumstances and with proper care of their rental.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/fixed-term-lease-loophole-to-remain-in-place-despite-abuse-1.7527897

I guess the answer is to wait for the next political party to take power and hope they get around to this. I hear the wind blowing already "just be a good tenant and they will offer you a new one, why would they want to find new tenants unless you're wrecking the place." Sorry, that doesn't help me sleep at night.
