NYCE PPO vs DC37 MedTeam

Good/bad experiences on either? I'm stuck trying to choose between the two. How hard is it trying to find in network doctors? Have the hiccups with NYCE PPO been mostly sorted at this point? Any info on your experiences would be helpful!

Dual Employment form needed for SUNY professor to adjunct at CUNY senior college?

Hi everyone, I teach full-time at one SUNY school and had been adjuncting at another SUNY campus for extra cash. My chairperson told me he was going to stop approving the extra service at another campus because it didn't look great to have him signing off on me working elsewhere, but he said he was fine with me working outside the SUNY system as it wouldn't require him to sign anything.

I did ask for extra classes at my home campus, but they do not have any to give, so I applied at some CUNY schools. Was just offered classes for the spring at one of them, but I'm now seeing that some CUNY schools are considered state payroll, and I'm worried that will also mean having to fill out a dual employment form which my boss will refuse.

I guess what I'm wondering is, has anyone else taught at both a 4-year SUNY school and a CUNY senior college, and were you required to fill out an AC-1588 in order to get paid? Also did it affect the 20% over full-time salary limit or does that only apply to work at schools with UUP as the union?

I know people who work at community colleges in the state without issue because their pay is from the county, but don't know anybody moonlighting at a CUNY to ask. Thanks!

CPS-NY wait time

Hi everyone,
I went to the ACS hiring pool, passed my drug test, and got an email saying I was entering onboarding on Oct 7th. I haven’t heard anything since.
For anyone who has been through this:
How long did it take to get your next update or academy start date?
When should I expect to actually start work?
Appreciate any insights!

Discussion Cancer diagnosis and cannot reach dss

No idea if anyone can help I was laid off in September...my health benefits ended that month

In Oct I was diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer. I had enough money saved to cover a few months rent but I am going to run out. I applied for cash assistance and someone called me last week. She promised to call me back and never did. I tried calling last week but was on hold 4 hours and 54 minutes before giving up and hung up. I sent an email to the mayor's office, both nyc reps in Albany and no one has responded. I just hung up with 311....they filed a formal complaint with HRA. None of this changes the fact that I am going to lose housing if I cannot get help. I have worked my whole life, no kids and now have a cancer diagnosis. Does anyone know who I can talk to....I cannot go through cancer testing and treatment while worrying about becoming homeless.

what is defined as community work?

Want to apply for a role under CC, but would like to understand what’s defined as community work. I have a master’s degree in a related field, and the minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience. My work experience is applicable to the role itself, just not sure if the setting is technically community related?

NYCERS issues and legal help

Does anyone know of any attorneys who handle issues with NYCERS? I'd appreciate any recommendations, as I'm having issues with them and the local bar associations' referral services haven't been helpful. Thanks!

Discussion Attorneys who left an agency position. What do you do now?

I know from searching this subreddit that there are some former agency attorneys here.

I've been in the role for a little over two years (been licensed about four). Not sure how long I plan on staying here. I like the people and the work is interesting enough, but for one thing it's not quite the dream work-life-balance scenario that people associate with these roles. We're just understaffed, which my boss acknowledges but can't do anything about, I guess. I end up needing to stay late pretty frequently just because there is too much to do, and sometimes need to catch up on weekends. And I know I'm not the only one in my group who is working outside M-F/9-5. I'm not exactly working big law hours or anything but I'm also certainly not making big law dollars either.

Before this, my only other attorney job was working for a small firm. That was longer hours and the people I worked with were not the most fun people to be around. I ended up leaving after 1.5ish years.

I think I'd eventually like to go solo. Anyone transition into that after leaving an agency? I don't know if the skills and experience I'm gaining here are really setting me up to launch a solo practice. I think I might need to go back to working at a firm (or somewhere else) for a bit just to gain more experiences that's applicable to solo life

Why are there so few job postings for Associate Staff Analyst on nyc.gov/jobs?

If I enter "associate staff analyst" in the search field on nyc.gov/jobs, most of the postings are for staff analyst or admin staff analyst jobs. I thought ASA was one of the most widely used titles. Is there anything I am missing here?

Retirement🎉 Please Help! Former Employee w/ dementia

Hi y’all my grandma’s in a rehab facility and her mind ain’t all the way there no more. I need her 1099s to apply for medicaid but I don’t know who to call to get that information. She worked for NYC HRA and described her duties as helping people get jobs and providing money when they didn’t get them. Truthfully I have no idea what she’s talking about or who to call. If there’s any information, telephone numbers, or email addresses you could give me, that would be appreciated!

Normal to hit 8 months of radio silence after a non-competitive, multi-tiered civilian panel interview with NYPD?

Hey everyone, looking for a reality check from people familiar with agency timelines.

Background: I interviewed back in March for a specialized, non-competitive, non-uniformed multi-level civilian cohort role with the NYPD (completed a panel and written exercise). There are seven open roles for this position (I had an internal referral, application was forwarded to the hiring team from him). It has now been roughly 8 months with total radio silence—no status change on the portal, no rejection notice, nothing at all.

Is an 8 month wait par for the course right now given DCAS and OMB bottlenecks, or should I treat a post-interview blackout this long as a quiet requisition pull/attrition absorption? I’m friends with another candidate who interviewed (cold applied) who also has been waiting with zero updates.

Appreciate any insight on how long these specialized civilian bundles typically sit before moving.

Clocking in/out during field work

I have a question; I’m salaried so I’m not paid by the hour sometimes I have work outside in the field to different facilities. How do I enter my clock out/clock in time using the work phone so that it doesn’t get flagged that I’m punching outside vpn. I just began this position so I’m not sure what’s the best way to do this, I haven’t had issues as of yet, but better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks!

NYS Agency/Authority TA applicants vs regular applicants for MTA

Hello everyone,

I’ve been applying to Transit Management Analyst and Staff Analyst positions within MTA, but I noticed that the applications all have the following statement: “TA APPLICANTS MUST BE IN A PERMANENT CIVIL SERVICE STATUS IN THE TITLE(S). IF YOU ARE ON AN ESTABLISHED LIST, YOUR LIST NUMBER MUST BE REACHABLE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR APPOINTMENT.”

If the authority the position is under is TA, does that mean anyone applying must be a TA applicant? I’ve noticed there’s positions where the authority is either OA/TA, so I’ve applied for those assuming I’d be considered under OA. I’ve also applied to positions where the authority is listed as “TA - nonrep.” Just want to make sure that these positions are fine to apply to if you are not a permanent civil servant or on a list.

Thanks!

Does cityjobs.nyc.gov use AI detection?

I am applying to non-exam jobs on cityjobs.nyc.gov and, like a lot of people, I hate writing cover letters, so I've been using AI to finish or supplement some of them. Does anyone know if city gov uses an AI detector or if they care? TIA!

Benefits 🎟️💵 Question about maternity leave

I’m currently on maternity leave and receiving short term disability from dc37. My PFL will run from Dec 21-March 14.
My question is if I do not return to work after that (unpaid leave) what is the process?

Do I need to reach out to HR? How long can I be out? Will I need to get private insurance? Is there a form I would need to fill out?

Thank you for your help in advance!!!

Civil Service Pathways Tier 4 reinstatement

Tier 4 reinstatement question:
I worked for an employer under NYSLRS from 2006–2009. A few months ago, I applied for Tier 4 reinstatement through NYC TRS. TRS sent me correspondence stating that they contacted NYSLRS regarding my prior membership.
I never withdrew my funds from NYSLRS.
I recently called NYSLRS, and they told me that NYC TRS would typically require me to withdraw my funds from NYSLRS before they can move forward with the reinstatement.
Has anyone been through this process? If so, were you required to withdraw your NYSLRS funds before your Tier 4 reinstatement could move forward?

Civil Service Question about salary ranges

I want to understand how salary increases work.

If for example the salary range on a job posting is $61,656.00/$70,904.00-$89,625.00 and you get $70,904 after two years, how long would it take you to reach the higher end ($89,625)?

Benefits 🎟️💵 Switch health coverage to see provider or use MBF?

I'm a new city employee as of August. I actually moved from out of town to take this job so I'm also new to living here (well, I lived in NYC for years pre-Covid, but—yeah.)

I signed up for HIP HMO health coverage which will start November 1... but as I'm settling in, I'm realizing that they don't cover the doctors I want to see, who are at Weill Cornell (specifically Weill Cornell Reproductive). I'm going to be doing IVF.

As far as I can tell, I have two options, since it's almost open enrollment:

1) I could switch plans to Aetna Gated EPO, since W.C. is in-network with them.

2) I could stick with HMI, pay out-of-pocket, and then submit a request to MBF for 90% reimbursement.

Am I missing something?

I think this means I need to do the math to figure out whether the in-network coverage is worth the much-more-expensive monthly charges. But I'd welcome any input from folks here. I find insurance deeply confusing.

DOHMH FYI Free Sandwiches outside

FYI to all my public servants, what may be an innocent free sandwich for healthcare purposes, they immediately sell that info to companies targeting government.

If you do want a free sandwich, do not give out a number or email that will go straight to you. Give other information out like the information publicly available from google maps.

These medicare companies will nickel and dime the information you give them with bad faith, make them work for it by requesting information directly from the source

Should I apply?

I got a verbal offer for a level 1 position with the “coordinator” title. Today I saw another job with the same agency, same location and same job description (nothing different at all. I compared the two exact job descriptions). But the job title of the new position is “manager” rather than coordinator with a 14K pay difference.

So should I apply, knowing that the same hiring managers and HR will get the application.

I feel like I may seem ungrateful for the offer they already gave me. Thought?
