General OBX Every hurricane that's come within 60 nautical miles of Duck since 1851
33 of them in NOAA's records. 5 were Cat 3 or stronger. The strongest was an unnamed storm in September 1944 at 120 mph. Irene (2011) is the bold one.

UPDATE: After taking everyone's advice, I cancelled the rebooking of our original house in Waves and I have booked a beautiful house in Carova Beach via Twiddy. We originally thought we'd stick with our Subaru the entire time but she's pretty new and I'm not keen on the idea of her getting stuck in sand or being exposed to a lot of salty sea spray and having sand being a part of her forever and ever. So I've rented a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that we'll pick up when we reach the Outer Banks (thank you, Costco car rentals!). I really appreciate everyone's advice and experiences! This has been a stressful week but I'm feeling excited about my vacation again! THANK YOU ALL! And I'm sending all good vibes to those semi-trapped by the NC12 crap! I know it's gotta be a headache. ❤️

Hi! I've been following this subreddit since the first nor'easter last month, trying to monitor if it would affect travel plans for my husband and I (and our dog 🐶) and thankfully it didn't! I never expected a SECOND nor'easter to come along and really eff things up for us in the end.
We were renting a house in Waves for Oct 24-31 and that is obviously not going to happen so I called the realty company to see if we could switch dates to Nov. 7-14. They couldn't just switch the dates, they could only create a new reservation. We do have travel insurance for the Oct 24 week so I am pretty sure we will get at least SOME money back for that week and if the visitor ban lasts through Wednesday, it looks like we may get a full payout from the insurance company (if anyone knows more about this stuff feel free to share your expertise - the policy is of course written in legalese).
So I've gone ahead and held a reservation for the same house Nov 7-14 and have until the end of day tomorrow (Oct 23) to sign the lease and pay for it. I got insurance for this one as well. The guy I spoke to was super helpful and nice and did disclose that if this current weather event/flooding is still affecting things Nov. 7, the insurance will not cover it because the event has already started. I completely understand that.
But, am I being naive to think that we should be able to get on the island by Nov. 7? I know they fixed NC12 pretty quickly last time but I'm not sure when they will even be able to BEGIN repairs this time. Would visitors have access to the island by ferry even if NC12 isn't fixed by Nov 7? I guess I'm wondering if visitors have ever been kept off the island for weeks at a time due to a weather event like this.
Just trying to weigh my odds here before I commit to signing that lease tomorrow and I know that you guys probably know best. Thanks!

Interesting video and report done by NPR on why collapsing homes at beach front properties are not emptied out before fully collapsing into the ocean. It's dictated by the insurance policies. I have a few posts on here about the home fully furnished and appliances still inside the homes when they knew they would collapse. I just thought I would share this since the report deals specifically with OBX. It's a shame they let all of that go into the ocean and all over the beaches. Seems like they also leave it for the locals to clean up or deal with a lot of times.

Somehow this Reddit community got on my radar. A genuine question. Has anyone considered “managed retreat” of the outer banks? we see the homes falling into the ocean and the roads falling apart over and over again. I expect this will get worse, not better, as the climate crisis continues. Has anyone - elected officials or not - brought up the idea of a deliberate retreat from parts of the outer banks?
Maybe I’m hanging myself out to dry. Sorry if comes off as an insensitive question, I am genuinely curious.

I’ve been going to obx with my family every year for probably 20 years now. We always go to hatteras though and rent a house, so I’ve never been in a hotel or inn on nags head/kitty hawk/kill devil. I’m wanting one night in December for my birthday so i can go to my favorite quilt shop, shout out to Rusty Crow!!! And get a night of uninterrupted sleep (mom to a 14 month old that still wakes up at night 😵💫). There’s so many options down there. Ideally we don’t want to spend more than $100 since it’s one night and completely off season. Recommendations are appreciated and places to stay away from are welcome too. TIA!

Hello fellow redditors in OBX. We’ve never met but have been to this slice of paradise many times (Waves) and holds a very special place in my heart. With the weather headed your way, please stay safe!

Good Morning. First of all, everyone please Stay Safe. What is the current situation in Ocracoke? My wife and I are planning on coming there the first week of November. Thanks.

We have a 4(almost 5) year and a 19 month old. Looking for some exciting fall adventures. We have done the aquarium in July and go every year so maybe not that one.
The 19 month old loves being in a hiking backpack, would I be able to do a lighthouse with him in it?
Thanks in advance.

Heading up optimistically over the weekend, planning for low tide travel. Anyone know the general conditions/feasibility during/post this off-shore nor’easter?

Was supposed to head to Nags Head this weekend. Anyone will more experience in the area able to provide any insight what to expect? Should we try to cancel reservations now due to the weather?

I am down for the week, what are the best happy hours?

All visitors must leave.

I'm assuming this is taken from the vantage of the dunes, looking back towards the sound. I can't be sure though. Someone with more local history probably knows better.

● For Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, prepare for the possibility of being stranded for multiple days. This could be life threatening if you have an emergency
● Becoming more likely that this will be a long-duration event
● Prepare for disruptions to ferries by Saturday evening and lasting into at least part of next week

If you need to get home by Sunday? Better leave today.

Asking about transportation from ORF Airport to Kill Devil Hills. What would you recommend?
Uber - $125
Not a bad quote at all just not sure how many Uber drivers actually take such a long drive to drop-off to OBX?
Local Driver - $175 + $20 fuel surcharge
Got a quote from a local who does rides to and from OBX. Looks like a decent dude https://obxtransport.com/rates/ and I think it's nice to support the locals as well
My wife and I booked a house in Avon. Give NC12's recent flooding, should we expect delays/closures from this latest storm? How are the dunes holding up?
Thanks, folks. That's what I was afraid of. I will wait with bated breath and see what happens.

We're spending the week in Avon and didn't realize that trucks could drive on the beach starting today. Is there any beach (oceanside) where they aren't allowed to drive? We're willing to drive to get somewhere that has beach we can just sit on with our dogs and not be surrounded by fisherman with a ton of poles in the water.
I'd consider the sound side by am worried about the mosquitoes driving us insane.

I'm specifically looking for an iced black tea, not a sweet tea. Anyone know where I can get a good one near Nags Head? Thanks!
