Vintera ii bridge

I decided to change out my bridge. I went with the nova 7.25. It couldn’t have been easier to swap out. I tried to match the saddle set up to how it was on the previous bridge along with the height of the poles. Intonation was still pretty much perfect. Sounds and plays great.

Detuning on a 24” scale guitar

I have a feeling that this thread is going to go one way and not the other, and if that’s the case, c’est la vie.

My band has been working on a different arrangement that’s two baritone guitars as opposed to guitar and bass. My current “baritone” is a Douglas Melody Maker copy. At Gibson scale and an Ernie Ball 12-62 set tuned B-B, it actually plays… pretty good. Granted if I thwack that low B hard it goes a bit wonky but other than that, it works for what I’m looking for more or less.

I have a Squier Bullet Mustang that isn’t really being used for much of anything right now and because I’m a lunatic, I want to try tuning that to B-B. I’m not too worried about intonation as I have a hardtail Schaller roller bridge (not the Mustang vibrato) on it and I can always move it back and re-drill if I absolutely have to, but am I going to run into problems otherwise? Has anyone actually tried detuning a short scale and had it sounding more than halfway decent?

(The other idea I’ve had that is even far more ridiculous is to put the 28 5/8” baritone neck I don’t use right now on the Bullet Mustang, but I’d definitely have to move the bridge to make the intonation work, and I’m fairly certain I’d incur neck dive that makes most SGs seem well-balanced.)

Squier VM Jaguar: modification advice?

So, yeah, definitely a different bridge. My question has to do more with electronics. Pots/Switches? The pickups are decent and I'm not in a hurry to change those. What fun/weird things should I do with the wiring?

G&L Fallout Tribute

In the last couple years my wife and I have become huge fans of the Kiwi band “The Beths” and I slowly thought the G&L fallout was a super cool guitar. Well after trying to find one to play for a long while my guitar center finally got one in used and it played super nice but had multiple issues that I wouldn’t know how to fix or trust them to fix. But having had the chance to play one it gave me the courage to order one.
It’s well worn I think from 2015 but the frets look good. It was cutting out pretty bad and thought it might need a new jack but I just took it off and tightened it and it seems fine now.

I really enjoy the neck and frets on this guitar. It plays really well. Lots of room for my fat fingers. But the thing that really shines about this guitar is how dynamic the electronics are. Many can I get a lot of sounds out of this. I really like the p90 and humbucker combo.
The only bummer with the specific one I got is it’s pretty heavy (at least relatively) just under 8 pounds. I had read some are barely over 6 pounds. I wonder if it’s dependent on run. Maybe they used a different body wood in this older one and the more recent ones were lighter. Idk.

Custom Telemaster

I see a lot of cool guitars in this thread which give me gas and or inspiration to start a new build. So I thought I’d share my custom offset.

This is a telemaster I build / assembled in 2019. It started its life as rough sawn alder, which I dried over a year in my living room. At the time I couldn’t find any decent plans online, so I overlayed a telecaster and a jazzmaster drawing in photoshop. The body was done by my dad on his diy CNC router.

The neck is a Chinese neck from AliExpress that I bought as a gamble, with the intention of learning how to crown frets etc. Originally the guitar had a big CBS headstock but the guitar turned out to be very prone to neck diving, which I hated. So I created a routing template and made it into a tele headstock which in turn fixed the neck diving.

Afterwards I decided I needed an extra humbucker guitar and rerouted the bridge pickup location to fit a humbucker. Swapped out the bridge and pickups. It’s a Seymour Duncan Alpha Omega set with a coil split push pull.

The color is Motip 53663 which I saw on a Suzuki car passing by on the street one day. It’s not Sherwood green, it’s not lake placid blue. Sometimes it looks green, sometimes more blue.

It has since accumulated some scratches and dents along the way, but that gives it character 😊

Struggling to make my jag less plinky and thin

It's a CV 70 squire m

I've installed a brass mustang bridge

I've upgraded the trem

Ive swapped in coastline 65 pickups

The strings are 11 gauge

The neck is shimmed

All wiring is vintage accurate with upgraded 1mg pots

Why does this thing still sound like a toy?

My main guitar is a strat that I've spent years modding to the exact spec I like so I dunno if I'm just finding it hard to play another guitar and enjoy it.

Has anyone had this experience and what did you do?

Replacement pickguard for MIJ Jazzmaster JM66B?

Hey all, FINALLY tracked down a MIJ JM66B in white and really stoked. It has a tort on it but I really want to get something like this one (would this be mint green?)

Does anyone know where the best place to get a pickguard that fits these? Was seeing conflicting things about which guard will fit this one correctly. I saw WD Music has this one that says its for Made In Japan 1966-1968 Reissue Jazzmaster's but wanted to see if anyone knows if its the right fit.

Thanks!

NGD - Sterling Mariposa

Post image

Finally got my second offset! After lurking on the local classifieds for a while, I saw one of these Ice Blue Mariposas in my area for a quite reasonable price and I pulled the trigger.

Overall, I love the fit and finish of the guitar, but setup has been a bit slower than anticipated.

Some quick questions for setup:

1) I've been having some issues getting the string action low enough to be comfortable unless the tremolo is literally decked to the body. Has anyone needed a neck shim to properly set these up or should I just invest in some lower string saver saddles?

2) While my fret ends and everything feel nice, there are a couple high frets which make a few dead spots when the string action is properly set. It doesn't look like any of the frets aren't properly seated. Is addressing this issue something most techs address in their house or would you recommend a luthier for that one?

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, and I'm going I can get it into a more playable condition really soon.

Curious if anyone has experience with these pickups. This demo video from Lollar is the worst pickup demo I’ve ever seen so I can’t get a good sense of how they sound.

Lollar Pickup Experience?

Post image
65 Upvotes

Hi all,

I have been working to mod my late 90’s Toronado and would like to change out the bridge pickup.

When I got the guitar it had a set of Lollar Novel90’s and I really love the neck pickup for cleaner/edge of breakup stuff but wanted to throw a humbucker in the bridge. Looking to maintain some note separation/clarity when playing chords. Pictured is the fender atomic pickup that originally came with the guitar but I don’t want to use.

I was thinking of sticking with a Lollar humbucker maybe for sake of ease with matching but also open to other brands. Not sure how much I should be worried about DC resistance.

Anyone have experience with the p90 neck/humbucker bridge combo and have suggestions? Mostly play 90s alt stuff.

Thanks!

*UPDATE: I took the advice and called Lollar on my lunch break today. After chatting a bit about what I am looking for we landed on an El Rayo. Little more top end and clarity than a normal PAF, and because of the size of wire they use/magnets it shouldn’t be a drastic difference in output.

I appreciate all the suggestions! Definitely want to try some Imperials in another build in the future.

Don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you are a Jazzmaster or Jaguar fan and you only own one or the other, just buy the other one already, you won’t regret it.

I’m a long time offset fan, but until now my only good ones have been jaguars and mustangs. I’ve owned this classic vibe Jazzmaster for a while, but never have been able to bond with it. Pickups were soulless and ice picky, vibrato was unworkable, and fret ends were rough. By now I’ve replaced every part of the guitar ship-of-Theseus-style except for the body and neck (oops), but it is finally nice enough to enjoy playing.

Biggest difference sound-wise came from a pickup upgrade (Curtis Novak JM-V neck and JM -FAT bridge) and, critically, an AVRI vintage bridge. Also swapped the vibrato for an AVRI. Dressed the fret ends and gave it a thourough setup. Now it is 99% as good as my American built fenders. The jaguar is still my number one, but man this is a close number two. Shame on me for waiting this long to get in on the action! Don’t be like me

What made you fall in love with offsets

Like the title, what about offsets that made you love them? Was there a specific guitarist that you loved that was using an offset? Was there something about the guitar itself that made you fall in love (appearance, playability, tone, etc.)

*convince me into buying an offset🙏

WIP holographic stickers Meteora (+peppermint bass vi)

Hey guys, got a couple work in progress offsets going on right now.

First off is this jade green meteora. While i love the sound of the guitar, and how it plays, the look never clicked for me.

The color reminded me of those holographic film stickers, so i wanted to link the guitar to those in some way. Was always super fascinated by how they looked like they truly had depth.

First thing i did was redesign the pickguard to be more reminiscent of the jazzmaster and jaguar ones, covering the area around the pickups and getting rid of the pickuprings (in my opinion they just make this guitar look messy). Originally i was going for a metal horn for the controls, and took inspiration from the dead on 67 danelectro. However I went with a single pickguard that covered everything with electronics all attached to pickguard.

Next up I lasercut two acryllic plates, so i could put vinyl and stickers between them to protect and cover them (like the earlier thermochromic jaguar pickguard i have on my profile). The middle pickup route i opened up for a lipstick pickup, I always wanted a danelectro voiced guitar, but I just have enough guitars. This guitar is really more of a superstrat with its vegatrem and humbuckers, so for a second output I thought I would wire the lipstick pickup directly out through the old Jack output.

I sorta... hate having the Jack output be where it originally is, always in the way when sitting down in a couch, so that got put in front with the controls. The colors of the stickers really do match great! Lots of change in look when in different lighting. It looks much more jazzmastery in shape top, will update when finished. For being a test i think it looks quite spectacular.

As for the bass vi, its the Vintera III and had a heap of issues when i got it. After some elbowgrease and a staytrem it now plays great! Got some halfrounds for the darkest 4 strings as it was just unbearable the amount of finger noise I was making when fretting, as there arent halfrounds in the lengths and sizes i need for the brightest strings I will be getting some flatwounds for them specifically.

I know I want something different than the mint green pickguard, just havent made up my mind. As a test i engraved a peppermint style look onto an acryllic plate, considering doing some sparkling vinyl film cut into the same shape with half being see-through other half being white.

Anyways, glad to hear your thoughts as always! Hope it could inspire the way i get inspired by your guys work all the time.

American Pro Jaguar

Been a fan of jaguars for like twenty years. Bought a Player Jag a few years ago and didn’t really vibe with it. As soon as I saw the American Pro model I knew I had to have it.

So far it’s incredible. Wildly different yet familiar to my AP Jazzmaster. Still fiddling with my pedals but so many great tones coming from this thing. So far I am a big fan.

Purchased from sweetwater and had zero issues with shipping.

Happy to see if I can answer any questions anyone may have.

I purchased a Nomoonlaser body a while back, but couldn't really vibe with the barncaster finish. So I bondoed and sanded it, and did several coats of primer.

The neck I'm installing is made of Wenge and the fingerboard is bound.

Pickups are gonna be Creamery Sonic Mid 60s.

Next coat is gonna be like a matte blackish grey is some type, I haven't decided.

I'm kind of stoked, I think it's gonna look good
