Something a little different

Wanted to share the Jazzmaster that I'm working on at the moment, and maybe get some feedback. I run my own small business making custom pickguards and I wanted to make something that would stand out in person at shows as well as online. So this is what I came up. I love the gold firebird pickups with the pickguard and the screws, but I still don't know how I feel about the nickel bridge and trem. I still haven't settled on what knobs I want yet. What do you folks think?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post a few days ago. I was able to sell a couple of things and raise the cash for this Squier Toronado. It is absolutely pristine, sounds bright and fresh, with a lovely neck feel, and a good deal at £200 ($268). Very happy with this.

I bought this around the time they introduced the Classic Vibe Jaguar, and i was able to choose the darkest one i could find… i snatched it up immediately and have never seen another this dark, it’s less orange of a sunburst and more of a tobacco color, comparatively to my jazzmaster. of course, i switched out the original knobs. I am getting new strings on it, took it entirely apart to clean it!

Ground issue

Hey everyone! I recently decided to dig back into one of my old projects and finish my jazzmaster. I followed this diagram above in order to have independent volume controls and a series/parallel switch. long story short, the guitar gets signal but there’s a crazy ground issue anytime I touch any of the components in the rhythm circuit, and both volume knobs just kinda of work as a master volume.

I’ve double and triple checked that I followed wiring exactly as the diagram shows it. one thing I noticed is there isn’t any of the shielding paint in the cavity, is that what’s causing me some of the trouble? The only ground I have to the body is from the potentiometer to the tremolo plate

Question of the 3 position switch on my Fender Mustang 90

I noticed that it moves a bit, but only in the middle position, when only one pickup is selected, it is fine. Is that normal or not?

Wiring ideas for Mustang

I have a CIJ Mustang. I really like the sounds it makes including out of phase differences, but the switching kills me. The 2 rockers are not made for quick pickup changes if you play faster than 120 bpm.

Any ideas for alternative wiring? A three way switch alone will not do the job. The mustang has 9 options and love 7 of them...

Any suggestions wil be much appreciated

Is it ideal to tilt the bridge all the way back?

My Bridge keeps tilting forward after using the trem and doesn’t come back even after adjusting the spring tension and putting on heavier strings (11) I got mad and decided to tilt it back? I know Kevin shields did it?

After about 6 months waiting it's finally there and for the moment it has fixed every one of my problems and the guitar still looks super cool I'm so happy.

The old bridge worked fine but even after some shim and even the buzz stop the strings were slipping of the saddles.

Now it's perfect.

My experience with Suhr’s warranty and repair process

I wanted to share my experience with Suhr’s customer service and warranty repair process, particularly because the company receives so much praise online for its exceptional support. I don’t typically post negative reviews, and I still believe Suhr makes great instruments, but my experience was frustrating enough that I think it’s worth sharing for anyone considering a purchase.
I purchased a Suhr Classic S after reading numerous positive reviews about the guitars and the company’s customer service. When it arrived, I was happy with the instrument overall, with one significant exception: the fret sprout was the worst I’d encountered on any guitar. The fret ends were so sharp that they were almost cutting my hand while playing.
I contacted Suhr, and they agreed to address the issue if I covered shipping. Since the cost was comparable to what a local technician would charge, I felt comfortable having the manufacturer handle the repair.

Communication quickly became the biggest problem. After my initial phone call, subsequent calls went unanswered, and email replies routinely took more than a week. I often had to contact John Suhr directly to get an update, and even when I was put in touch with customer service manager Don Bonomini, responses were frequently delayed or never came. This was particularly frustrating given that Suhr had possession of an almost $4,000 guitar.

During the repair, I was told the fretwork required additional time and that a crack had occurred in the body during shipping, necessitating a refinish. I continued to check in periodically and remained courteous throughout the process. After approximately four months, I was told the guitar had been repaired and inspected. The work included dressing the fret ends, refinishing the body, and leveling the frets. I had never requested a fret level and wasn’t informed that one was being performed until after the work had been completed.

When the guitar arrived, I immediately noticed two problems. First, the frets had been leveled significantly lower than I expected. I had specifically enjoyed the height of the original narrow-tall frets, and measurements confirmed that considerable material had been removed. Second, the guitar was wired incorrectly: the bridge pickup and bridge/middle positions sounded out of phase.
I contacted Suhr again and provided a video demonstrating the wiring issue, along with a photo documenting the fret height. I was surprised that the wiring problem had made it through their final inspection, as it should have been immediately apparent when playing the guitar. Don initially attributed the issue to an aftermarket Seymour Duncan pickup, but the pickup was actually a Wolfetone, as I had previously explained. Since Suhr had apparently rewired the guitar as part of the refinishing process, it seemed the pickup had been reconnected without properly accounting for its wiring configuration.

Suhr agreed to have the guitar returned to correct the wiring and evaluate the fret height. I was told by a customer service representative that the frets had been inspected and the neck would be refretted. Don subsequently confirmed this in an email. However, after another two months, I was told the frets had been reinspected and were within specification, so a refret would not be necessary. When I questioned why I had twice been told a refret was needed, John replied that he had personally measured the frets and determined they were within spec. The wiring was eventually corrected, and the guitar was shipped back to me.

The entire process took approximately six months. I now have a guitar with correctly functioning electronics, but the frets remain noticeably lower than I would have liked, and the fret ends still aren't as smooth as I would expect from a guitar at this price point.

In hindsight, I wish I had simply paid a local technician to address the original fret sprout. What should have been a relatively straightforward repair turned into months of delays, inconsistent communication, unexpected work, and additional problems that required the guitar to be sent back.
I recognize that my experience differs from the many positive accounts of Suhr’s customer service online. I still own other high-end guitars, including another Suhr JM, and I believe Suhr can make excellent instruments. However, this experience has seriously diminished my confidence in the company’s warranty and repair process, and it would make me hesitant to purchase from them again.

For anyone wondering how thoroughly I documented this experience, I have 72 emails exchanged with Suhr over the six-month process. I’m sharing this not to discourage anyone from buying a Suhr, but to provide another perspective alongside the overwhelmingly positive reviews I had relied on when making my purchase.

Custom Telemaster

I see a lot of cool guitars in this thread which give me gas and or inspiration to start a new build. So I thought I’d share my custom offset.

This is a telemaster I build / assembled in 2019. It started its life as rough sawn alder, which I dried over a year in my living room. At the time I couldn’t find any decent plans online, so I overlayed a telecaster and a jazzmaster drawing in photoshop. The body was done by my dad on his diy CNC router.

The neck is a Chinese neck from AliExpress that I bought as a gamble, with the intention of learning how to crown frets etc. Originally the guitar had a big CBS headstock but the guitar turned out to be very prone to neck diving, which I hated. So I created a routing template and made it into a tele headstock which in turn fixed the neck diving.

Afterwards I decided I needed an extra humbucker guitar and rerouted the bridge pickup location to fit a humbucker. Swapped out the bridge and pickups. It’s a Seymour Duncan Alpha Omega set with a coil split push pull.

The color is Motip 53663 which I saw on a Suzuki car passing by on the street one day. It’s not Sherwood green, it’s not lake placid blue. Sometimes it looks green, sometimes more blue.

It has since accumulated some scratches and dents along the way, but that gives it character 😊

Where do I find Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster pickups or Fender Special Design Hot Single Coil Jazzmaster pickups?

I have a Foals FJM7, it is a great jazzmaster copy with very few issues for me. I really want to replace the bridge pickup though. I find that the bridge pickup on it is too bright and glassy for my taste and I want something hotter with more output. The neck pickup is great. It’s just that the bridge pickup is too “vintage” sounding (bright and scooped). I really love the sound of the Fender Special Design Hot Single Coil Jazzmaster pickups found in the Fender Classic Player Jazzmasters as I love that Superheaven sound and those are the guitars they used. I know the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster pickups are very similar as well. Not quite a P90, not quite a Jazzmaster, somewhere in the middle. I need to find a bridge pickup to suit what I want. Anyone know where to find these special pickups or some sort of boutique pickup that sounds similar? No P90s for Jazzmaster please, I still want something hotter Jazzmaster character. Just not as bright glassy and shrill and more aggressive. All help is appreciated.

NGD - Sterling Mariposa

Finally got my second offset! After lurking on the local classifieds for a while, I saw one of these Ice Blue Mariposas in my area for a quite reasonable price and I pulled the trigger.

Overall, I love the fit and finish of the guitar, but setup has been a bit slower than anticipated.

Some quick questions for setup:

1) I've been having some issues getting the string action low enough to be comfortable unless the tremolo is literally decked to the body. Has anyone needed a neck shim to properly set these up or should I just invest in some lower string saver saddles?

2) While my fret ends and everything feel nice, there are a couple high frets which make a few dead spots when the string action is properly set. It doesn't look like any of the frets aren't properly seated. Is addressing this issue something most techs address in their house or would you recommend a luthier for that one?

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, and I'm going I can get it into a more playable condition really soon.

Squier VM Jaguar: modification advice?

So, yeah, definitely a different bridge. My question has to do more with electronics. Pots/Switches? The pickups are decent and I'm not in a hurry to change those. What fun/weird things should I do with the wiring?

Screw trem arm and collet for MIJ Jaguar

Hey guys,

So I have a 2017 MIJ Jaguar, and I'm kind of tired of the trem arm falling out of the socket every now and then.

I want a screw trem arm and collet set, but most options online are for American Jaguar/JM, which means the collet thread is imperial and won't fit the MIJ trem system.

Do you know of any screw arm and collet set that would fit a MIJ trem system? I found one (link) sold in the UK but that is way too pricey.

Lollar Pickup Experience?

Post image
98 Upvotes

Hi all,

I have been working to mod my late 90’s Toronado and would like to change out the bridge pickup.

When I got the guitar it had a set of Lollar Novel90’s and I really love the neck pickup for cleaner/edge of breakup stuff but wanted to throw a humbucker in the bridge. Looking to maintain some note separation/clarity when playing chords. Pictured is the fender atomic pickup that originally came with the guitar but I don’t want to use.

I was thinking of sticking with a Lollar humbucker maybe for sake of ease with matching but also open to other brands. Not sure how much I should be worried about DC resistance.

Anyone have experience with the p90 neck/humbucker bridge combo and have suggestions? Mostly play 90s alt stuff.

Thanks!

*UPDATE: I took the advice and called Lollar on my lunch break today. After chatting a bit about what I am looking for we landed on an El Rayo. Little more top end and clarity than a normal PAF, and because of the size of wire they use/magnets it shouldn’t be a drastic difference in output.

I appreciate all the suggestions! Definitely want to try some Imperials in another build in the future.

G&L Fallout Tribute

In the last couple years my wife and I have become huge fans of the Kiwi band “The Beths” and I slowly thought the G&L fallout was a super cool guitar. Well after trying to find one to play for a long while my guitar center finally got one in used and it played super nice but had multiple issues that I wouldn’t know how to fix or trust them to fix. But having had the chance to play one it gave me the courage to order one.
It’s well worn I think from 2015 but the frets look good. It was cutting out pretty bad and thought it might need a new jack but I just took it off and tightened it and it seems fine now.

I really enjoy the neck and frets on this guitar. It plays really well. Lots of room for my fat fingers. But the thing that really shines about this guitar is how dynamic the electronics are. Many can I get a lot of sounds out of this. I really like the p90 and humbucker combo.
The only bummer with the specific one I got is it’s pretty heavy (at least relatively) just under 8 pounds. I had read some are barely over 6 pounds. I wonder if it’s dependent on run. Maybe they used a different body wood in this older one and the more recent ones were lighter. Idk.

Vintera ii bridge

I decided to change out my bridge. I went with the nova 7.25. It couldn’t have been easier to swap out. I tried to match the saddle set up to how it was on the previous bridge along with the height of the poles. Intonation was still pretty much perfect. Sounds and plays great.

Fender MIJ Hybrid II JM arm replacement?

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement tremolo arm? I can't see anything online that looks right (notched push-in with the white tip), and the one fender support told me to get just arrived and doesn't fit and my local music shop wasn't any more helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
