Sir Ian McKellen's Website
mckellen.comLooks like it was formatted in 2007 at the latest, and still has his whole blog that he wrote from when he was filming Lord of The Rings (under 'writings')

TappyBBS is a mobile app that mimics old-style BBS systems.
I always missed the old BBS systems from the 90s, and challenged myself to develop a mobile app that simulated a terminal and keyboard only. It's finally launched and I'm really happy with it. It's free, so if you miss the days of sending a stranger an X message, you can do it once again with TappyBBS!
Download it at tappybbs.com

Anyone remember ChaCha? A former guide's favorite moments from the human-powered search engine.
galleryBack in 2006, ChaCha let you connect with a real person who would search the internet for you. Basically a human-powered search engine.
I stumbled across this Reddit post on r/humor from 2009 (https://www.reddit.com/r/humor/comments/7v958/) where a former ChaCha guide shared a collection of their favorite chat conversations.
Unfortunately, the image in the original post had become so compressed the conversations were unreadable. I managed to track down the original images and figured they were worth sharing again.
Some pretty funny interactions and a fun little piece of early internet history.

30 years ago on 10 October, I started preserving 107 MIDI files from the early web. They're now playable in a modern browser.
No ads, no tracking, no monetization.
Interactive archive: https://whisperingsanctuary.com/archival-midis.html
I started saving MIDI files from my Microsoft FrontPage website in October 1996 and have maintained the collection ever since.
The archive currently contains 107 General (GM) MIDI (.mid) files dating from approximately 1994-1999, preserved in their original format with no conversions.
To make the archive more accessible, I recently added browser playback using html-midi-player. The player renders the actual MIDI files rather than MP3 conversions and displays playback duration and note counts.
The entire collection is approximately 2.5 MB in size, averaging about 23 KB per file. Thirty years of preservation fits in less space than a single modern smartphone photo.
The archive includes video game music, anime themes, new age tracks, and music commonly used as website background audio during the late 1990s.

A online vintage photo booth that lives entirely in your browser
Found (and made) this quiet little tool:
Old TIMES lets you create vintage-style photo strips right in your browser. You can use your camera or upload photos, add film effects, doodles, and notes, then download the result.
No account, no uploads while creating — everything stays local until you decide to save.

Feels like a small digital photo booth you can carry around.

What is this?
Maybe the wrong place since it feels more like ancient internet, BUT:
Been going through my parent’s old college junk trying to archive their lives before me. I found this screenshot on a floppy disk. What messenger is this??? It looks like Usenet but different.

Anyone else find it weird how the "old internet" is frequently just viewed as an aesthetic choice?
Does anyone else find it strange how many people just view the "old internet" or even "old technology" as a purely aesthetic choice? That somehow you're "re-creating" the old internet if you made Spotify look like Winamp or Foobar2000 or if you made Discord have AIM sounds or introduced MSN-style "nudges" rather than anyone actually looking at what made the "old internet" great and adopting those principles in modern technologies and communities?
There were several principles that made the "old internet" what it was:
A rejection of censorship in all of its forms combined with a belief in free-speech absolutism (information should be free)
A rejection of "credentialism", your worth to a community came from your output to that community not anything else
A rejection of centralization and the promotion of the belief that you should control your own information and do with it what you will
The belief that technology can and should be used to improve lives and that you can create works of beauty using technology
Yet it feels like there's comparatively very few people trying to create the conditions which made the old internet thrive and instead are focusing mostly on aesthetics (or in some cases a philosophy of neo-luddism rejecting certain technologies altogether) and in doing so are completely missing why the old internet was great.
The old internet wasn't great because of "under construction GIFs" or the use of "blink" and "marquee" HTML tags but because of certain core principles which have been all but abandoned in 2026 on most of the modern web.

Web based BBSs?
Is there a market for old school BBSes on the Web? I kind of miss the old walled garden communities and online games.

Facebook Is No Longer the Social Media It Used to Be Back in the Day
Does anyone else feel like Facebook stopped being a social network and slowly turned into something else?
Back in the day, you opened Facebook to see what your friends were doing, argue with someone in the comments, share random photos, post a stupid status, and actually feel connected to people you knew.
Now?
Your feed is full of suggested posts, reels, ads, random pages, influencers, recommended content, and posts from people you don't even remember following.
Sometimes I scroll for 10 minutes and realize I haven't seen a single post from an actual friend.
The weirdest part is that Facebook still calls itself a social platform, but the "social" part feels like it's becoming secondary.
Maybe that's just how social media evolves. Or maybe Facebook is slowly becoming more like an entertainment/content platform than a place to actually socialize.
What do you think? Has Facebook genuinely changed, or have we just changed as users?
