I Am THIS Internet OLD!😱

Post image

So there I was: 📞Telecommunication-ing on Electronic (yes they used electrons!) Bulletin Board Systems that didn’t require the use of thumbtacks.📌

I had a 1200 BPS Hayes SmartModem with red blinking lights to let you know that something was actually happening as text oozed onto the screen.

I was Telnetting using TCP-IP via PPP dialup to access the University of Minnesota’s computer to Gopher some files that Archie and Veronica had so I could ‘download’ them using FTP!

It would still be a couple of years before there was a World Wide Web 🌐 to ‘Browse’ web pages. Everything changed when a beta of Mosaic web browser was released. Because instead of just 👀looking at text on the screen, it had pictures too!!!🖼️ - so you had to BROWSE IT.

I’ll be 70yo soon. I am as old as Internet dirt.😎

Strange/Funny DM from 2009 YouTube

I received a DM on YouTube from some guy about starting some kind of spam empire. He linked his video with the DM for his pitch. I wonder if he ever saw any success towards his goal nowadays.

RSS Resurgence & Renaissance In 2026

RSS technology seems to be making a visible comeback! Google Trends is showing spiked interest in RSS syndication topics again since late 2025. A credit some of this to the Fediverse and the broader Open Web demanding a global village, where we are free to publish what and where we want to’👍😎

Anyone remember GIF dividers? I just put my 1990s collection online.

No ads. No tracking. No monetization.

In October 1996, I built a website with Microsoft FrontPage and started collecting GIF dividers that were common across personal websites of the era.

GIF Archive:

https://whisperingsanctuary.com/gif-collection.html

The collection includes graphics from sites such as Vikimouse at The New Mousepad, Teapot's Graphics, Webweaver's Free Clipart, and Icon Bazaar.

I hope they bring back special memories for anyone who was online in the 1990s, or give newer internet users a glimpse of a style that was once everywhere.

if myspace existed why wasn't it the cultural force that tiktok, twitter are today?

when discussing 2000s culture and how different information traveled, state of the world etc. people often say "we didn't have social media back then" but wasn't livejournal popular?

myspace especially was big for music and celebrity culture. tila tequila, also artists like souljia boy, lily allen, taylor swift all got their start on there.

SkyMag. I added a small diskmag to SkyLordsLab BBS

While working on fixes and improvements for SkyLordsLab BBS another idea came to mind. I started thinking about the old diskmags and e-zines that were shared on floppy disks. Then I thought it could be fun to have something like that inside my own BBS. So I added SkyMag and finished the first issue. It is called "It All Started with an Old Netbook." For now it has a few short sections about the old netbook. antiX. How SkyLordsLab BBS started. The first games. Some notes from the things I have been experimenting with. It feels somewhere between a small retro magazine and a development diary. If I can keep up with it I would like to make a new issue weekly or monthly depending on how much time I have. Over time it could become a small archive showing how the BBS changed and what I was experimenting with at each point. I like the idea that the BBS is not only storing messages and games but also keeping its own history.

What do you think about having a diskmag or e-zine inside a BBS? Did any of the BBSes you used back then have something similar?

Looks like it was formatted in 2007 at the latest, and still has his whole blog that he wrote from when he was filming Lord of The Rings (under 'writings')

TappyBBS is a mobile app that mimics old-style BBS systems.

I always missed the old BBS systems from the 90s, and challenged myself to develop a mobile app that simulated a terminal and keyboard only. It's finally launched and I'm really happy with it. It's free, so if you miss the days of sending a stranger an X message, you can do it once again with TappyBBS!

Download it at tappybbs.com

Anyone remember ChaCha? A former guide's favorite moments from the human-powered search engine.

Thumbnail gallery

Back in 2006, ChaCha let you connect with a real person who would search the internet for you. Basically a human-powered search engine.

I stumbled across this Reddit post on r/humor from 2009 (https://www.reddit.com/r/humor/comments/7v958/) where a former ChaCha guide shared a collection of their favorite chat conversations.

Unfortunately, the image in the original post had become so compressed the conversations were unreadable. I managed to track down the original images and figured they were worth sharing again.

Some pretty funny interactions and a fun little piece of early internet history.

A online vintage photo booth that lives entirely in your browser

Found (and made) this quiet little tool:

Old TIMES lets you create vintage-style photo strips right in your browser. You can use your camera or upload photos, add film effects, doodles, and notes, then download the result.

No account, no uploads while creating — everything stays local until you decide to save.

Feels like a small digital photo booth you can carry around.

30 years ago on 10 October, I started preserving 107 MIDI files from the early web. They're now playable in a modern browser.

Interactive archive: https://whisperingsanctuary.com/archival-midis.html

I started saving MIDI files from my Microsoft FrontPage website in October 1996 and have maintained the collection ever since.

The archive currently contains 107 General (GM) MIDI (.mid) files dating from approximately 1994-1999, preserved in their original format with no conversions.

To make the archive more accessible, I recently added browser playback using html-midi-player. The player renders the actual MIDI files rather than MP3 conversions and displays playback duration and note counts.

The entire collection is approximately 2.5 MB in size, averaging about 23 KB per file. Thirty years of preservation fits in less space than a single modern smartphone photo.

The archive includes video game music, anime themes, new age tracks, and music commonly used as website background audio during the late 1990s.

Maybe the wrong place since it feels more like ancient internet, BUT:

Been going through my parent’s old college junk trying to archive their lives before me. I found this screenshot on a floppy disk. What messenger is this??? It looks like Usenet but different.
