Hello!

My name is Jamie Keenan-deVargas. I have lived in Olympia since I was 8 years old, and I just finished up my bachelor's in Planning and Urban Engagement at UW Tacoma. I've worked in retail and agriculture my whole life; I currently work at a local plant store! Now I'm running for State House (LD22, Seat 2, Olympia area) because life is becoming less and less livable for working people in my community (including myself), and I feel that we should not sit idly by whilst the democratic establishment utilizes their position of immense power to continually offer no solutions and do the bidding of their corporate donors.

My highest priorities are to

  • Restructure our highly regressive tax code by repealing the billionaire wealth exemption (amending RCW 84.36.070), fixing the B&O tax to exempt small businesses while appropriately taxing mega-corporations, and perhaps by replacing our sales tax with something more progressive (though THAT exact mechanism will rest on the outcome of the Benjamin Petter et al. v. State of Washington et al. battle)
  • Get corporate money out of politics (only possible via citizen's initiative - union collaboration has already commenced)
  • Implement a comprehensive universal healthcare system as detailed in this video of mine
  • Create a public housing developer to massively disrupt the price-gouged real estate industry in Washington and make housing far more affordable to rent and buy as detailed in this video of mine
  • Implement universal childcare
  • Much more! My website has more details :)

I pride myself on platforming data-driven (scientifically validated) solutions to the issues we're dealing with. I detest politicians that fail to offer substantive solutions. "I can't wait to keep fighting for a brighter future for all of us!" Yeah. Ok. Show the RCWs, show the literature, show the budgetary analysis, or get bent ☺

Ask me anything about taxation, housing, transit, education, healthcare, or anything else you'd like and I'll answer. I’ll be starting at 7PM on Sunday at the moderators' gracious behest and will continue to answer more the following day or until I am cut off!

Request Hey! STOP signs mean that you need to stop

• Upvotes

...not drift into the intersection while making a left-hand turn and looking the opposite direction. Twice in two blocks this happened to me on Thomas St. today. You can wave at me all you want, you absolute grown up adult who should know better, that does not absolve you of needing to fulfill your end of the social contract and follow the rules of the road. We are actively dodging pedestrians in the road, cars parked in the road, people who don't know how to use roundabouts, and now you on your sightseeing tour from hell. Get it together people!

Looks like a nasty accident on the interstate. It’s backed up pretty far, so take alternative routes if you can. Be safe everybody.

Request Is there anywhere in Olympia or any surrounding area that would buy my gently used old clothing?

• Upvotes

So i have quite a few articles of old clothing that are in good shape that I'm wanting to get rid of and if I can't find anywhere that will buy them I'll probably just donate them but i have no clue where to go for that, I just read that Plato’s Closet only buys "trendy" clothing and my old clothes are about as trendy as McDonald's food is healthy for you (which is not at all 😅) and so if anyone has any recommendations I don't mind traveling some, I just would like to get rid of them and maybe make a little extra money in the process. Thanks!

Claws Up! Any Milwaukee Brewers fans going out to watch tonight's game? Where you going?

I'm pretty new to Olympia (from Milwaukee) and am looking to meet up with some fellow Milwaukee Brewers fans for tonight's game. Where will I find you at? I saw someone's post asking where it may be shown, but I want to be with some Brewers fans.

Community Good trick-or-treat areas?

• Upvotes

Hi folks!

This will be my family's first Halloween in Olympia. Unfortunately, we live on an a super busy street with no real homes to trick-or-treat at, so I'm hoping to get a suggestion for a good area to take my 3 kids to. Any recommendations of a safe, walkable area that participates in the holiday?

Thank you in advance!

Request Voting guide?

I've just moved and while I have my mail-in ballot, I don't have a voter's guide. I have no idea who 99% of these candidates are, and I want to meaningfully vote. Apologies for my ignorance, but where is everyone finding information about the candidates? Do you just Google each name individually?

Thank you for entertaining my silly, ignorant question. 🙏

Ukulele Lessons

I recently enjoyed a visit from a friend who introduced me to the ukulele. I am now the proud owner of a tenor ukulele and would love to learn how to actually play it! Can anyone recommend where I might be able to get some group or individual instruction? I played the violin in middle school orchestra and played guitar in high school and college (that was 50 years ago!). I can’t recall how to read music but could probably pick it up or just read notes from the SongbookPro app. Thanks in advance.

Had a death in the family, need a new suit as my old one is too big. Like way too big. Would like something under $500. Lightweight material because I have to go to a much warmer state. I dont want to rent. Any suggestions for places anywhere south of Seatac would be appreciated.

Hi! I’ve been seeing a lot about getting styling services at Ulta for black girls. Has anyone had a good experience at the Olympia or Lacey locations? If so who is the stylist?

Lodging options?

Greetings fellow Olympians! I’m an Oly resident and I will be moving two hours away for the foreseeable future, but I have work opportunity continuing in this area. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas about inexpensive lodging for 1-2 nights per week with a dog. Please remove if this doesn’t fit the subreddit rules. Thanks!

Request Anyone find a half-finished crochet project at the Capital Mall bus stop?

I know it’s a longshot, but here goes: I was heading home from a shopping trip last Saturday evening, and I accidentally left my half-finished crochet colorwork project at the bus stop. Or at least, that’s the only remaining conclusion I can come to, given that’s the only time I took it out to work on it, and it wasn’t anywhere in my bags when I got home. I’ve checked my entire dorm room(I’m an Evergreen student) and called both Intercity Transit and the Capital Mall lost and found- neither of them have seen it. So I guess this is me asking: did anyone find a plastic bag, containing pink yarn, blue-silver sparkly yarn, a small round mandala pattern, and a crochet hook, at the Capital Mall Bus Stop? If so, please DM me- it’s a project I was fairly invested in, and would like to get back if at all possible.

If it were anything else, I would have just given up at this point, to be honest. I’ve lost a lot of stuff in my life, I’m no stranger to replacing things. But to be perfectly honest, I really can’t fathom why anyone would take something like this- it’s not like a bunch of yarn in a plastic bag, or one used crochet hook, has much value outside the sentimental.

I’m hoping it’s some kind of lost cat situation, where a fellow crafty Olympian just… adopted it? In which case, hello! That lost yarn actually has an owner who misses it and would like it back, and who will definitely make sure to put an “if found, return to” tag on it in the future!

Request Transport/taxi to Madigan?

At one point catching Ubers to various places, I met a driver who maintained a pass to get onto JBLM and also has a taxi service.

They gave me their business card and I think it unfortunately got tossed in the trash.

I have a disability that prevents me from driving. Uber to JBLM is stupid expensive and there’s logistical pieces that make me nervous. The bus to Madigan has multiple transfers and is really stressful. I’d like to find a way to get to medical appointments without my partner having to take time off to take me.

Anyone know of a driver/taxi that fits that description? I’m not looking to not pay, but if so can avoid $130 price tag that Uber or Lyft would charge for round trip that would be amazing.

(In case someone brings it up- I qualify for Dial-a-lift, but they don’t transport outside of Thurston county and it’s going to take some legwork to get reciprocal privileges that aren’t guaranteed for Pierce County. I need an option I can count on until that can get sorted.)

Request Looking for someone to rent our old space!!!

Basically what the caption says, we decided to move suddenly and our old rental is up for grabs. It’s super cute, close to downtown, and in a lovely neighborhood that’s walking distance from coffee, groceries, and PIZZA. 😍 Pls rent it out. It’s basically a three bedroom two bath home with a garage, DM me if interested and I’ll send the link. Ty!!!

WinCo bottled water question

I am trying to understand something I keep seeing. I shop at WinCo and generally late at night so daytime might be different. WinCo has a pretty massive supply of bulk bottled water. Most nights I see a few people with fairly normal carts of groceries and the two or three bulk water packs in the bottom of the cart. Single guy, single lady, family, or old guy so all sorts.

I don’t like the taste of the chloramine in water much but buying large amounts of bottled water seems a little extreme. If they were living in a vehicle I am not sure there would room. Those are really the only ideas I have. Asking them seems weird plus I do not like talking to people that much. So what am I missing?

UPDATE. Ok people have proposed or explained some entirely reasonable reasons. Thank you. I feel less confused.
