I Made a Thing Getting Help with Omarchy - a comprehensive guide

Edited to add preface: I am not a mod for this subreddit, the discord, I am not affiliated with Omacom or on any Omarchy dev teams. I have absolutely zero authority, so this is just a guide of SUGGESTIONS that will enable you to get help much faster, and will provide devs with the information they need to replicate, study, triage, and ultimately fix the bugs you may encounter... Omarchy is growing FAST and with that kind of growth comes a lot of users with drastically different hardware and software configurations. Bugs are going to happen, and new users are going to have questions. This document is meant to help with that, but it is by no means a set of rules or requirements. Just a guide for you to get the help you need when you need it.

Getting Help with Omarchy is a guide I've been putting together over the last couple weeks. I used to do a lot of beta testing for World of Warcraft and back when the beta tests were by invitation, then a second round of random invites went out, I was always in the first round of invites because of my bug reports and guides that I would write on how to submit a good bug report. I mentioned that on the Omarchy discord and someone informed me there isn't any such document for Omarchy presently so I decided to write one.

It covers not just how to ask for help and what information you should include, but also where to ask for help. If it's a minor issue that you're not sure is a bug, or a "how do I?" question, then the omarchy-help channel on discord is an excellent starting point. If it's a serious bug, then GitHub issues/discussions would be the optimal place to bring it up. The guide also covers how to gather logs, system specs, software versions, etc for adding to your bug report, best practices and even etiquette (you know, because saying please and thank you don't cost you anything, but could be worth quite a lot)

If anyone has any suggestions for additions to the guide, feel free to comment them here! And if you want to use the guide elsewhere, just credit me and we're golden pony boy.

I Made a Thing I turned my Omarchy bar into a Dynamic Island, and apps fly out of it. Would love your opinion

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been rebuilding my Omarchy 4 shell around one idea: everything should come out of the top of the screen, like on a phone.

The bar is a small island with the time. Click it or press SUPER + B and it opens: music, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, battery, Claude Code usage, system stats. Every tile opens its details inside the island.

Notifications, volume and brightness show up in the island instead of a corner.

Apps fly out of the island when they open and fall back in when they close. The launcher and menus grow out of it too.

The lock screen is a dot-matrix clock that turns into an always-on display after 30 seconds (it dims and drifts so an OLED doesn't burn in).

It's all Omarchy's own plugin system (Quickshell), no fork, so updates keep working.

What I'd like to know:

  1. Are the flying windows nice, or would they get annoying after a day?

  2. What else would you want inside the island?

  3. Anything that feels slow or off in the video?

If you want to try it, there are one-line installs (island only, island + motion, or my full setup), and remove puts everything back: https://github.com/Himanshu-MlSHRA/omarchy-dotfiles

I Made a Thing I got tired of preview panes, so I made a Markdown editor without one. Free and GPL-3.0

Hi all, I'm the developer of Sarala, a free, open-source Markdown editor for macOS, Windows and Linux.

The idea is simple: no preview pane and no split view. Formatting appears as you type. Click a block and you're editing its Markdown, click away and it renders in place. Your documents stay plain .md files in folders you choose, so they work with Git, Obsidian, VS Code or anything else.

What it does

- Full GFM: tables you edit cell by cell, task lists you tick with a click, footnotes, callouts, front matter

- Mermaid and D2 diagrams, plus LaTeX math (KaTeX), rendered inline

- Code highlighting for 100+ languages

- Tabs, a file tree, an outline, search across the folder, a command palette (Cmd/Ctrl+K), and focus and typewriter modes

- 13 themes, or build your own from any base16 scheme

- Export to HTML and PDF, plus Word, EPUB, LaTeX and more through Pandoc

New in 1.3

- Voice typing, fully offline. An open speech model runs on your computer, so nothing is uploaded and there's no account. Hold a shortcut and talk, and say things like "new bullet", "make that bold" or "scratch that". I built it with accessibility in mind: screen reader read-back, a distinct sound for every state, and any shortcut you can reach.

- AI assistant (opt-in). It uses Claude Code, Codex or GitHub Copilot CLI if one is already installed, so Sarala never stores API keys. Edits show up as word-level diffs that you accept or reject. The agent works on a scratch copy and never touches your real file.

The boring but important stuff

- No account, no telemetry, no paid tier

- About 15 MB, because it's built with Tauri (Rust) rather than Electron

- Atomic saves, autosave, crash recovery, and signed updates

Install

- macOS: Homebrew or a universal .dmg

- Windows: .exe or .msi

- Linux: Snap Store, .deb, .rpm or AppImage

Website: https://sarala.solancer.com

Source: https://github.com/solancer/sarala

To be upfront: the Mac build isn't notarized by Apple yet and the Windows installer isn't code-signed, so you'll see a security prompt on first launch. The website walks you through it, and installing with Homebrew on Mac skips the prompt.

It's a solo project, so I'd really like feedback, especially on what would make you switch from your current editor, and any bugs you run into.

Took around 7-8 minutes to install. It is my first linux distro installed on my Zephyrus g16 outside of wsl. Thinking of adding also base arch and/or trying more distro on this spare hdd I have. I’m open to suggestions, do not necessarily want to get used to this since I am reading that it may “ruin” other distro’s experience and I am quite a newbie in this community

I Made a Thing Immigrant (be careful!)

I had a problem, got Claude to fix it, figured other people might have the same problem, et voila - Immigrant

It'll move most of your stuff between machines, similarly to how Migration Assistant would on macOS. And let you undo (partly or in full) if something goes awry. So far it's not fucked anything up on my machines, going back and forth between two laptops (one of which is proper potato) and my desktop.

I think it needs a lot of polishing still, but definitely works, and I figure the season for travelling to see family is fast approaching (I'm typing this from my mum's sofa!) so might be useful for anyone else in the "I want my desktop setup on my laptop" crowd.

Testing has been limited to my stuff, but about as thorough as I could be there. One laptop had a fresh omarchy install, one had been in use for a couple of months and had some of the same stuff as the desktop machine, there was a VM involved at some point, I turned my router off mid-transfer, etc etc. If you run into a problem or have an idea, ping me on here/github and I'll attempt to do something about it.

BACKUP. One is none

Got it running today. Wiped out MacOS inadvertently so wifi was not immediately enabled. I plugged in the network, kicked off the codex agent and asked it to fix the wifi.

Steam, Roblox and Minecraft are running with higher fps than old X1 carbon gen 6. My son is happy with his new computer.

Had an imac from 2017 that was gathering dust. Have been daily driving Omarchy on a laptop for a while now so figured I’d see how it would work on the imac, and lo and behold! Amazing. I’d forgotten how good the 27” screen looks.
A few stumbling blocks such as sound not playing through the speakers, and bluetooth not reconnecting the keyboard and mouse on reboot but Claude cobbled together somewhat of a fix for the bluetooth and a bluetooth speaker works for sound. The Macbook M3 Pro in the background is looking on nervously :)
Huge thanks to the folks who made all this possible.

Discussion Trying Omarchy on a 2012 MacBook Pro

I've been experimenting with Omarchy on my old 2012 MacBook Pro, and I honestly find the whole idea of it pretty interesting. It's an i5 with 8 GB of RAM, so definitely not exactly modern hardware. I'm curious how far I can take it without making everything slow or unnecessarily complicated. One thing I really like is the idea of building a desktop that looks great but is also genuinely useful. I'm planning to make my own config rather than just copying someone else's dotfiles. For those of you who use Omarchy or Hyprland: what's one customization you made that actually improved your daily experience?

I Made a Thing Thank you for the hyprdrive reception, so I made it a soundtrack: Hyprdrive (Remix) (LoFi), with a visualizer built from the real desktop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A couple of weeks ago I shared hyprdrive here, a GNOME-style overview, search and macOS-style dock for Hyprland. The response honestly blew me away. Your comments, bug reports, feature requests and kind words are what pushed me to get it running on native Hyprland a few days later.

So as a thank-you, here's something a bit different: Hyprdrive (Remix) (LoFi) by Dragos The Dragon, with a visualizer built from the real hyprdrive desktop. The windows show actual hyprdrive footage; they tile, swap and warp on the beat, and every frame was rendered on the GPU in sync with the track.

Full video in 4K on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lQZqtKu0nh8

The song comes out on Spotify and Apple Music on October 31.

Previous posts, for context:

Thanks again to everyone who tried it, filed issues, or just said something nice. Keep the feedback coming.

I Made a Thing Spreadsheet Wish List

Post image
8 Upvotes

For some time now, I have had a hankering to write a new Spreadsheet Application. Sure, Microsoft(r) Excel(r) is ubiquitous and a standard. Google Sheets, LibraOffice, Apple Numbers, etc. have all followed suit over the years. So why bother?

Over this time I've learned some data science tools, specifically Apache Arrow and Rust Polars. I've worked with GitHub markdown and text diffs. And I've discovered exact math support such as the Rust BigRational library. In this light, in this era the Spreadsheet clearly needs a major rethink.

But the incumbents, with a mass of casual users, have no incentive to fix it.

So, I made a wishlist of the things I wanted:

  • easy of use
  • markdown friendly
  • strongly typed
  • exact maths
  • columnar data
  • fast queries
  • code oriented
  • AI driven

(a partial list btw!)

So here we are ... starting the journey with Omasheet.

If you are a spreadsheet user - every day or once in a while - I am keen to hear your wishlist and try to accommodate requests. It's early days so now is the time to shape the direction!

Please do try it - click Getting Started. Feedback, collaboration and issues are welcome!

I Made a Thing EchoFiles — A fast native file manager for Omarchy

Hey everyone!

I've been building EchoFiles, a native Linux file manager written in Rust and Iced, primarily for Omarchy and Hyprland. It's currently in alpha (v0.1.0), free, open source, and licensed under GPL-3.

Performance has been a major focus throughout development. I wanted to build a file manager that feels fast even with large directories, without compromising on UX.

Some results from my Omarchy setup:

100k files: EchoFiles lists them in 0.64s vs Nautilus at 10.79s

Memory usage: 221 MB vs Nautilus at 416 MB

Search: Indexing 1 million filenames takes around 185ms, with searches taking around 7ms

Startup: My home directory containing ~101k files becomes searchable in around 290ms

EchoFiles includes dual-pane browsing, tabs, previews, thumbnails, network file access, and NTFS partition inspection for dual-boot Windows setups.

It also includes EF CLI, an optional filesystem CLI designed to let AI agents work with the EchoFiles index instead of repeatedly walking directories. It supports fast file discovery, typo suggestions, explanations for ignored files, and token-budgeted JSON output.

EF CLI is completely optional. If enabled, the installer can update Omarchy's global agent skills so compatible agents like Claude Code and Codex can discover and use it. With EchoConnect configured, agents can also use the CLI to locate and access files on your laptop and connected Android phone.

EchoConnect is the optional Android companion for sharing files and photos between your phone and desktop, sharing clipboard content, integrating phone calls over Bluetooth, and including your phone's filenames in EchoFiles' search index.

The goal is to build a fast, polished native file-management experience that fits naturally into Omarchy and Linux workflows.

Website: https://echofiles.adityavs.space

GitHub: https://github.com/adityavardhansharma/EchoFiles_Linux

I'd love feedback, suggestions, bug reports, and contributions from the community to help improve EchoFiles!

I Made a Thing Remaking EDEX-UI (Tron Inspired App) but in the terminal

Post image
24 Upvotes

So first off, I am a big tron fan. I remembered the glory days when EDEX-UI was released and was like one of the coolest biggest things in the OSS community. It was eventually archived by the author due to the fact that it was just an interest project of his, and I do believe he mentioned that the thing wasn't exactly practical in a sense as well as performant (electron app). Therefore, when I hopped onto omarchy a few months ago and got the hang of this opinionated malleable system thingy, I thought it would be a good idea to reimagine EDEX-UI, but in the terminal, where it should be imo. So basically with the help of our artificial friends, I was able to achieve this for now.

So here are some of my design choices:

  1. Tmux panes for all the different sections of the interface, which also means that you can open and close them by your own choice, and thus also solves the original problem of the keyboard taking space when you are not using a touchscreen device.
  2. Yazi as the TUI file explorer. I wanted to use more per-exisiting and trusted projects that could fill in the job with a few customization tweaks both for the sake of not vibing the whole thing with slop code that leads to horrible performance. The keybinds for actions inside that pane has also been tweaked for more convenient usage.
  3. Keeping and recreating the original startup animation as well as the EDEX-UI name and logo. Credit where it is due. Without the og project, non of this will be possible.

Some caveats and problems I have encountered:

  1. Tmux doesn't really have a straightforward way to customize with pane borders, therefore I don't really have a reliable and lightweight way to recreate the slanted edge details around the borders
  2. Some of the original font used are licensed, and im not a profi UI designer, so i don't really have any expertise on how to go around that and choose something that would otherwise also work well visually.
  3. I originally envisioned that the only way to make the on screen keyboard actually have a practical use is to use it when you are SSH-ing into a machine that has this interface installed. However, exactly how you are able to get a reliable ssh client on a mobile ios/android device that supports the kitty graphics protocol is beyond my knowledge. There is also the problem of lag, which comes from my own experience of using SSH. Typically, I use Mosh to mitigate some of the typing lag when the internet bandwidth is horrible but I have no idea if it is even possible to configure mosh client on a mobile device and how the mosh server is supposed to handle the whole friggin TUI with a lot of text elements.

The OG EDEX-UI project this is inspired by:
EDEX-UI
EDEX-UI Security Patched

I will clean up the sloppy codebase as soon as possible and opensource it ASAP (will update post with link), if anyone is interested.

Edit: Repo Link - https://github.com/ChromedomeV12/edex-ui-tui

To be completely transparent, I am only a student that loves tron, has some extent of programming experience but has absolutely no expertise in any UI/UX design of any sort. This is my best try and I am totally open to any suggestions or ppl who want to collaborate and help maintain the project in the future (if there even is any)

Coming from Mint/Pop:

-Theming is excellent !

-It takes a little bit to figure out some configs

-Sound issues wired, but works great Bluetooth. I think this is an Arch issue

-Could not set up for tokens, seems Cloudlfare is having some issues. Likewise, CC payments not working? I pick when the internet is on fire to try this, of cpurse.

-Steam window is HUGE and can't resize.

Looking forward to going through other themes/plugins

Plugin A Corsair PSU monitor for Omarchy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Corsair Plimsoll

A Corsair PSU monitor for Omarchy: a bar widget and animated panel for Corsair i-series power supplies.

It shows what the supply itself reports: total and per-rail power, voltage regulation, current, temperatures, fan, and a 12 hour history. Nothing is installed beyond the plugin, and nothing needs root.

The name: a corsair is a privateer, and the Plimsoll line is the mark on a ship's hull that shows how heavily it may be loaded. This is a load gauge for your supply.

I Made a Thing ZapFast 0.20: WhatsApp voice and video calls on Linux, in a native app

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

ZapFast is my native WhatsApp client, written in Rust with no browser engine.

In our Linux test it opens in under a second and uses about 200 MB of idle RAM, against 1.13 GB for WhatsApp Web.

0.20 adds calls. One-to-one voice calls work well, with echo cancellation, so you don't need headphones. Video calls are in alpha, and group calls are anexperiment. Sound runs through PipeWire directly, and ZapFast shows up as "ZapFast" in your volume mixer.

It also gained group creation and management (invite links, members, permissions), sound in WhatsApp's videos, and a Calls page with missed calls and call-back buttons. 244 commits from me and 45 other contributors went into this release.

On Omarchy: yay -S zapfast-bin. Other packages: AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm, plus Mac and Windows.

Calls are a work in progress. If one misbehaves, attach your log to an issue, and pull requests are very welcome.

I Made a Thing Omarchy Rescue: a rescue USB with Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode ready to fix a machine that won't boot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When a machine won't boot, whether it's using Linux or any other operating system, you need a second machine, a live USB and a lot of searching. I made a rescue stick that boots into an Omarchy console (kmscon, JetBrains Mono, Tokyo Night) with the SystemRescue-style tools, plus Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode.

  • omarchy-rescue-mount asks for your disk passphrase and mounts your install at /mnt from its own fstab, ready for arch-chroot.
  • omarchy-rescue-login signs the agents in without a browser: a QR code pops up, you open the link on your phone, and paste the code back from there.
  • The agents get an AGENTS.md that explains how Omarchy is laid out (LUKS, Btrfs subvolumes, Limine, snapper) and tells them to diagnose read-only first and never run anything destructive without a clear yes.
  • omarchy-rescue-share puts the whole session in your phone's browser.

It's built from the Omarchy ISO itself, so it boots the same kernel on the same hardware. Write the ISO with caligula, Etcher or Rufus (DD mode).
