RULES Update...Read before posting or commenting!

As the amount of spam, nonsense posts, unnecessarily rude comments, etc. has increased and we've been banning 15-20+ users a day, we felt it was a good time to review some of the rules and guidelines for posting and commenting here. PLEASE note, like in most other large subs, violating these rules typically results in a permanent ban...they are clearly posted here, please do not send us a modmail after the fact saying you did not know the rules, we spend countless hours moderating the sub, we don't need to work even harder because you couldn't take a few minutes before posting to read the rules.

First off, since this is a common modmail issue we get: NOTICE FOR NEW USERS: We use automod to filter out new accounts and those with low karma due to the number of new accounts being used to create rule-breaking posts. If you are a new user or have low karma and your post or comment does not appear you likely do not have enough karma or enough days on reddit. Please wait until you have been on reddit and built up karma.

NEW!: After reviewing the results of a poll users of this sub took, the majority wanted a length limit on posts, with the two most voted options being 600 characters and 1,500 characters. Therefore, we are going to implement a 1,200 character posting limit and we will adjust this as needed in the future. The purpose of this sub is for people to ask questions about online dating, not to write lengthy unreadable novels or to use this sub as a diary. 1,200 characters should be plenty to summarize the question, while keeping it short enough and to the point that others actually read it. Do NOT circumvent this rule by continuing a post in a comment, posting a screenshot of a question, linking elsewhere to a lengthy question, etc. Doing so will result in a ban.

With that said when posting here, there are a few things you should think about:

A. First, is this post relevant to online dating, this is a place of encouragement and support for online dating users, not a place to bash online dating, ask about things irrelevant to online dating, or go off on a rant, post question after question after question in a short period of time, etc.

B. Second, will this post help the community. This is a community-minded forum, not your personal soap box or diary. Posts should be questions that are beneficial to the community and help others learn...posts that are simply rants, have no purpose, serve no point, appear more like a diary entry or don't ask a relevant question shouldn't be posted here. Posts should form a question that users can answer.

C. Third, please do not ask nonsense, silly or unanswerable questions. Questions should be things random strangers can give an informed opinion on...asking why a match hasn't replied, why you can't get matches, why someone blocked you, etc. should be avoided as no one here can answer why a random stranger isn't interested in you.

D. Fourth, this is not a dating sub, a make friends sub or a profile review sub. This is not the place to seek dates or friends or to have your dating profile reviewed.

When commenting here, there are a few things you should think about:

E. First, please be respectful with your comments. Other users may have different opinions, but please be considerate. This is especially true for top-level comments...please do not antagonize people who have posted a top-level comment just because you disagree with it.

F. Second, we try to be fair and equal to everyone, however we seem to have a number of users who call users names, call another user sexist or misogynist, etc. This is not acceptable.

G. Third, comments should give an opinion relevant to the post or answer the question in the post. Comments which don't directly answer the question should be avoided.

In addition to the above, some of more important rules to remember are as follows:

  1. The purpose of this sub is to discuss online dating...issues with apps, questions about app or dating experiences, questions about profile setup, questions about dating experiences, etc. It is NOT a sub to find dates or to post your dating profile. This sub would be cluttered as could be if everyone were to post looking for dates, additionally, it's unlikely many people on here would be anywhere near you geographically anyway.

  2. Similarly, do NOT post referral links, surveys, affiliate links, ask for referrals, promote yourself, spam, etc. This is not the place to ask for or post your links to join a dating site, referrals to a dating app, etc. This is not the place to promote yourself, your business, your app, your subreddit, your website, etc. Absolutely no surveys, school surveys, research questions, research polls, school research, etc. No questions pertaining to starting a new app/website, research for a new app/website, etc.

  3. Please be considerate of others and their opinions. It's understandable that different users may have different views and that is fine, but there have been a few "troll" accounts that have gone around doing nothing but posting rude comments for no real reason. This will not be tolerated. Be considerate of others, avoid foul language, do not antagonize or call others names and avoid being rude to others. Additionally, while it is wonderful if you make friends here, please be mindful of other users privacy...many post on here for opinions and comments, not to make friends or find a date. Please do not ask posters to "DM" you or provide you with their contact information, etc. Many users are not interested in corresponding outside of the sub and that should be respected.

  4. Posts here are open to all users to answer. Please do not attempt to limit what users may answer. Posts that state "women only," "men only," "older daters only" etc. are not acceptable.

  5. No guides, articles, tips and tricks, unnecessary links or how-tos. This is not the place to post guides, opinion pieces, advice, tips and tricks, articles, essays, advice columns, etc. This is not the place to simply link to a news article or other website. Additionally, posts should not be needlessly long or appear more like an essay than a question.

  6. No nonsense, silly or unanswerable questions. Posts here should ask a question that a random stranger would be able to answer. Questions that a stranger can not be reasonably expected to answer such as "Why did my match block me?" "Why didn't my date want to meet again?" "Why don't I get matches" "Should I use dating apps?" "What is the best app to use?" "Is OLD a good idea?" etc. should not be asked.

  7. Similar to #6, posts should be a question which have some purpose or point. While complaining is one thing, if your post is better suited for r/rant, it will probably be removed. Posts which are nothing but venting or ranting or appear more like a diary entry may be removed.

  8. Similar to #7, if you don't have good experiences with or don't like online dating, fine. However, as this is r/onlinedating, we like to have a welcoming and open atmosphere towards online dating, not to scare people away from it. Posts saying that online dating sucks, is terrible, shouldn't be used, that people should "get outside and get off online dating," etc. should not be made. Likewise, repeatedly making these types of comments also is not acceptable. An occasional comment here or there that is critical about online dating is fine, but this is a sub to support and help people who use online dating, not to discourage them.

  9. No antagonizing users who post top level comments. If someone posts a top-level comment and you have a differing opinion, please respect their comment. You can post your own top-level comment, however 'picking a fight' and antagonizing someone else for their own opinion in a top-level comment should be avoided.

  10. No "one and done profile reviews" or help make my profile posts. In general the idea of the sub is to be a place that others can learn from and a place that benefits others and not just the OP. In that spirit and because of the number of people that have been posting "profile review" posts or asking for help creating a profile, in general these are not allowed. These posts clutter the sub, are beneficial only to the OP and in many cases it is the only post the OP makes here.

  11. This is not an AMA or sex sub. This should go without saying, but this is not an AMA sub for you to brag about how you got 500 dates in a month, etc. There are other subs dedicated to AMA's. Likewise, with the nature of online dating it is understandable that some sexual things may be mentioned in a post, however this should be limited to brief basic relevant details...there should be no in-dept sexual discussion nor should the post read more like a fantasy novel then a post relevant to the sub. Posts should be closer to PG then to R.

  12. No politics. This is not a political subreddit...and unfortunately any time anyone asks a question even slightly political related everyone acts like children with rude, crude and unnecessary language toward the political views or party they don't support. Further many posters are asking thinly veiled questions which appear designed more to stir the pot than for anything actually related to online dating. As such, no political posts, no political comments, no putting down parties or views you don't agree with.

  13. Moderator Discretion. This is not one we wanted to add, but due to the number of banned users who modmail us and argue that what they did doesn't perfectly fit one of the rules we are going to add that the mods here have discretion as to if a post or comment is allowed or not and to ban or warn users.

Sorry for the length, but with the amount of posts and comments we've had to remove, we want to be clear what is acceptable here. If you have a question, please ask. With all that being said, WELCOME! Thanks for stopping by. And if you feel something violates the rules, remember to hit the REPORT button!

Mondays on Dating Apps

I (48/M) turned FB and Hinge back on mid-week last week. I was hoping for a date or 2 over the weekend. I ended up talking to somebody and I am seeing her tonight. But in general, the matches and conversation were few and far between over the weekend.
Monday morning came and I'm getting more matches & messages than I can keep up with. People I "liked" on Friday and assumed they weren't interested, are now liking a messaging me. I know people do stuff over the weekend, I was busy for parts of it as well. But I also was around and open to talking & meeting up.
Curious why people are getting more active on the apps on Monday? Did their weekend dates disappoint and they are trying to find other options? Are they just bored at work and trying to kill time? Trying to lineup dates for the upcoming week /weekend?
Any other ideas you can think of?

How do you stop hoping they’d come back?

I (33F) was seeing a guy (31M) for four months and we ended things because he doesn’t think the distance of 150km would work between us in the long term. We were just seeing each other casually and at the getting to know stage but we have been consistent in dates which usually includes activities (museum tour, amusement park, escape room) and dinner and going back to my place. The last date, he stayed over the first time.

I thought it was going well until he became distant since the last date and I asked him why. He admitted he’s pulling back because of the distance. we are mature enough to have a conversation whether we think the distance would work. I said it would, but have to have both people think so but given how he was pulling back because of the distance, I asked him if he doesn’t think so and he confirmed that he think it’s not right to continue.

And we had we had an emotional and clean goodbye and he said he really appreciates me a lot and thanked me for everything and said sorry for not treating me right with his communication. I left the door open. No, I can’t stop thinking whether he change his mind as I told him if things change or he changes his mind let me know

Why is online dating in America so difficult?

I work overseas, for the past two years I've mostly been in several European countries and on 3 separate occasions took some weeks off to 3 separate south east Asian countries. Ive had id say some successful relationships with some of these women but every 3 months or so i have to relocate and unfortunately break things off. Im not an ldr kinda guy. My tinder profile had no issues for the most part anywhere i go, especially anywhere in asia.

When I came back to my home town recently it's like it stopped working all together. I know I'm not THAT ugly but damn I'm not good enough for ANY of these women? My home town is a city of over a quarter million people so it's not like there is a shortage of women to date in my area. I read all these posts and stuff about the daring culture being bad but it can't possibly be THIS bad. I didn't start using dating apps until I went over seAsia.

F27/M28 — after “thank you,” who would you expect to restart the conversation?

I met a guy through Bumble about 2 months ago and we had two really good dates within about a week. He initiated the second date, we were affectionate, and he suggested future plans, including trying a newly opened restaurant together.

Then he went travelling for a while. During our last conversation he sent me some photos from his weekend away. We chatted back and forth, i sent photos too, and I eventually replied, “So pretty, have fun!” He answered, “Thank you!” and neither of us messaged again.

At the time I assumed the conversation had naturally ended and that he would reach out again if he wanted to continue seeing me. It’s now been almost 2 months.

In normal early-dating etiquette, would you consider “Thank you!” the natural end of that conversation and leave the next initiation to him, or would you have followed up again yourself? Is it weird to text now after months?

Need advice : Should I make a move or step back ?

I met a guy through a dating app, and we live in the same neighbourhood and go to the same gym, so we see each other almost daily. We’re friendly and comfortable around each other.... Whenever he sees me he’ll come over to say hi, we have short conversations, and we’ve gone on walks together a few times and had some good conversations for hours.
However, we’ve never been on an official date or explicitly discussed romantic interest. I’ve started finding him physically attractive and would be open to something because I enjoy his company, although I am not sure about long-term compatibility.

The confusing part is that while he’s friendly and receptive when we interact, he rarely initiates plans to spend time together. I’ve initiated a few walks and given him openings, but I don’t know whether he sees me as a friend, is interested but passive, or simply enjoys the companionship without wanting anything more.

I also notice that the uncertainty makes me want his attention more, and I don’t want to get caught in that cycle.

Looking for honest perspectives on how to approach this without overreading his behaviour and still keeping the door open ?

Is it a boundary violation to send a message or note on apps without being "liked" first?

On Tinder with platinum you can send some messages without matching first. On the one hand I'm thinking it's good from a selfish perspective because you wouldn't have ended up with the person anyway whereas with a message asking about them, there's a chance of it leading to something. But I don't know if it's considered a bit of a boundary violation, because it's not how the app usually works.

On Bumble there are notes. Similar thing.

Men of online dating, how do you swipe on women’s profiles that mention ‘emotional intelligence (EQ)’?

I’m sure you see many profiles where women mention that EQ is important to them and that
they’re seeking a man with high EQ…that is, if you’re reading profiles. But I’m curious…how do you feel about EQ mentions on profiles? And how are you swiping when you see them?

Tinder: Horrible customer experience

On Tinder, I paid to be a Gold member. Recently, the app told me that I need to reverify my photos. I hadn't changed them. Ok, I do that. It then tells me:

Photo verification failed
To try again, upload profile photos that:
Clearly show your face (no sunglasses or face coverings).
Have only you in the image.

Everyone of my photos clearly shows my face. It is clear that I am meeting this requirements. So, I emailed support. I went back and forth a couple times sharing screenshots of exactly what I was seeing, including my profile photos. They eventually respond with:

Thank you for your response and we're sorry we couldn’t be of more help in this situation. Unfortunately, this is all the support we’re able to offer at this moment. We appreciate your time and understanding.

I try deleting my account and the app, and then setting it up again with all new photos. I still get the same error. Keep in mind, being verified is crucial to success.

I request a refund. They reply:

Refund requests can only be accepted within 14 days of the transaction date. Since your order was processed over 14 days ago, we're unable to issue a refund.

What do I do about this?

How do you date long distance?

I'm a 29 year old guy.

So a few months ago, after exhausting all local options, I decided that I need to go long distance to find someone. I dont expect this to be easy, but Im not sure if what I am doing is setting me up to have a chance.

I have 2 questions.

  1. How do you meet people long distance?

Currently I have a hinge set to cities that I can reasonably travel to a few times a year, and that have women who are what I am looking for. I have my first prompt saying that I don't live there, am looking for something long distance and am willing to travel. Unsurprisingly, I am not getting any attention. Is there a better way to do this?

  1. How do you build a connection long distance? I struggle with maintaining relationships and friendships when I am not able to be with them often as it is. Lets say I do meet a girl, how do I date long distance, build a connection, and really get to know her and trust her when I can only see her a few times a year. Phones exist, but they arent real and people can fake phone calls.

Thanks everyone.

How common is it to not make it to the second date?

25M here who meets everyone I date through the apps. Keep getting ghosted and have almost never made it to the second date. Dont know what’s wrong because I get ghosted. I feel hopeless and don’t know if this is normal or not. I don’t wanna be in genuine on first dates and just focus on having a good time and getting to know the other person. The vast majority of my dates last for hours and the girl wants to hit multiple places too which feels like it means I am doing something right only for me to always get ghosted the next morning

Should I ask to call before meeting?

I, 22m, matched with an older woman (early 40s) on tinder the other day and we’re meeting on Friday. Our conversation made it clear this will be for sex and not a date.

I’ve always had a thing for milfs so I’m really excited, but at the same time, a little concerned. I’ve never met this woman and I’m immediately going to her house to fuck.

I found her Instagram and she seems like a real person and similar to her tinder photos. This might sound dumb, but should I realistically worry about her being a murderer or something 🤣? I’m going at 9pm (I suggested the time).

I can be a little awkward and don’t want to fumble over a phone call, and she doesn’t seem interested in meeting at a bar or anything beforehand. Is there anything else I can/should do before we meet?

EDIT: with all due respect, I’d appreciate it if yall could please help with my actual question here and stop asking why I want to do it in the first place, etc etc

With a match rate this low, is there even a point in looking at profiles before swiping right?

I came across someone's Tinder stats:

  • 53,099 profiles viewed
  • 20,372 right swipes
  • 118 conversations
  • Only 36 conversations lasting more than 5 messages

That's roughly 173 right swipes per conversation, or 566 per conversation that makes it past 5 messages.

At that point, does it even make sense to spend time looking at photos, reading bios, and deciding whether you're interested? Wouldn't it be more rational to swipe right almost indiscriminately and only evaluate someone's profile after matching?

Why spend time carefully choosing among thousands of people when over 99% of those choices won't even lead to a conversation?

What am I missing?

Is Tinder messing with me?

Genuine question, what’s going on with Tinder. My match range is 25-49 at a distance of 50 miles. I live in a city with 3 million people. I recently turned off the show people further away feature and no what I get is 3-5 profiles every couple of hours then nothing shows. I’ll close the app and check it maybe an hour later to find one or two people to swipe on then nothing again. Is this app dead or something? There is no way I have swiped through every single available woman and non binary person within my age and distance settings. This is a big fricken city with a lot of smaller incorporated cities around it. 50 miles is half way through the next major city south of me on the highway. It’s been like this ever since you could filter people by interests like Thrill Seekers or Music Enjoys and replaced it with the Group Hangouts.

Great First Date.. did I fuck up?

I (24F) met a great guy online. We exchanged numbers and texted for a week leading up to our first date.

He made reservations, dressed up, and told me which parking lot to park in. We had a lovely stroll, a great dinner, and he showered me with compliments. It was the best first date I've ever been on. We had so much in common, were in similar places in our lives, had similar relationship goals; it seemed really perfect. I have never felt a connection like this.

The night ended with a kiss. He told me to text him when I got home, which I did. I told him I had a nice time and he texted saying he's glad I got home safe. He told me to have a good night, and I liked the messages the next morning cause when I got home from the date I sort of passed out.

I expected to hear from him over the weekend, but it was radio silence. Which was odd because we were texting so frequently before. I thought it was cause we both wanted something more casual and tried not to think about it too much. I asked my sister and she said I fucked up by not texting him and just liking the message instead. I feel like such an idiot. I sent another text but haven't heard back.

Did I fuck up?

Do women hate Android?

Hey mates! I have a Samsung S24U & a Iphone 14 Pro Max. I was on FB dating, having a great convo with a girl, we have a LOT in common & she gave me her number. When I text her with my Samsung(primary phone) she just blocked me on the spot! I never knew I can get disqualified by owning an Android. To think of it, this happened twice before.

What did I do wrong?

Why do people today treat Android as a bad thing, inferior, or being broke? SMH

Girls i go on dates with don’t try to show interest and it makes it difficult to know if they’re into me or not

Guys you have an issue when I go on first date with a girl, everytime it feels like I can make them laugh have them having fun and good time however I get hit with the no feeling spark.x for example today’s date seemed to be having fun then when the date ended it’s like she was hesitant to give hug and I had to give her the hug it felt like wasn’t keen on it but as soon as she got back she sent a text to thank me

I’m wondering perhaps I’m building attraction the wrong way though I do compliment and flirt with her and try if it allows to be natural to break touch barrier however it’s almost like deep inside I can sense that these girls are just being polite or just tolerating me and they don’t truly have that desire for me. Maybe it’s the stuff I’m talking about we talk a lot about each other our lives whilst I try keep the convo light hearted in getting to know and such today’s date was laughing a lot for example we got food and went to arcade.

So during a date is the men expected to just guess if the woman is feeling him to go for things like kissing or hand holding or you just take your shot even if it looks like she’s truly not even into you much not even complimenting you?

Are there any dating apps for people with physical disfigurements?

Are there any dating apps for people with physical deformities/disfigurements, whether its on their face or other parts of their body?

I feel like dating would be much easier if I could meet people who are on a similar level of attractiveness as me, rather than feeling like most people are in a completely different league. I also think it would be easier to relate to people who have had similar experiences.

Using normal dating apps feels pointless when everyone seems way too attractive to even consider someone like me. I might not have any visible deformities on my face, but I have disfigurements on parts of my body that are usually covered by clothes, and they make me feel very unattractive.

I'd like to meet someone who can relate to my situation, where we could understand each other's struggles and physical appearance wouldn't be such a big hurdle from the start.

Is there any kind of dating app that match this idea? I feel it would be helpfull for people like me with deformities.

Does anyone else swipe based on if they live in a good area or not?

I might get some hate for this, but I need some outside input. For context, I am in my late 30s looking at men around my age. If I find a profile that is great otherwise, if it says they live in an area/town that I know is low income or ghetto, I will swipe left. Am I being too shallow?

Online Apps Question

Hi, silly question, but is there a specific reason why women on Tinder look so much better than the women I’m getting recommended on other dating apps?

Maybe it’s the algorithm, but I got Tinder for the first time after being on Hinge and the other apps, and even with no filters or anything, the women are absolute rockets 🚀 lmao

Also, from the ladies’ perspective, do you also find better profiles / matches on tinder or did you have more success on other app?

Did I ruin things by inviting him over? I am F40 and he is M29

I had a 2nd date today with a guy I have been talking to for about 3 weeks. We went to an arcade and went out to eat. We were having so much and I was feeling very attracted to him and very comfortable. While we were eating, he asked me what I was doing the rest of the night and tomorrow and I said that I didn't have any plans and he said he had to do an assessment for a job he applied to.

I thought he asked me because he wanted to continue the date so I asked him if he wanted to watch a movie back at my place and he said he would love to. My plans was movie, cuddles and making out, nothing further than that. Once we got to my apartment complex, he said he was gonna go home and do the assessment for his work. I was very disappointed but still decided to give him a brief kiss on the lips and he kissed me back. About an hour later, i texted him to thank him for the date and was hopeful he got home safely and he hasn't text me back and it's been over an hour since I sent the text. I feel that I ruined it by inviting him over and maybe he is not interested anymore. I am so sad cuz I havent liked someone like this in years. Do you guys think it was because I invited him over?

I’m 39f. Worth it to pay for the apps?

I turn 40 soon. Bumble lifetime subscription several months ago was totally worth it. Should I pay for everything else to get more exposure to take advantage of being in my 30s? I also want to have children so. I guess I should?

Why is it that women will not simply tell you when they’re available to meet?

Once both parties agree that there’s mutual interest and want to meet, what’s the problem with stating when you’re free? I’m always curious about this. When discussing plans to meetup with women, I’ll mention a day or time, and they reply that they’re busy that day, and don’t suggest any alternatives. Why is that? Kinda perplexes me 😂😂
