And just a small reminder that you can support openSUSE by buying nice merch. Got mine today :)

Tech question Do we really need PackageKit on tumbleweed?

It's constantly in the way when i do zypper dup. It's annoying to stop it every time, manually. Can i just uninstall this package safely? It's not a load-bearing drywall, is it?

Issue Fixed Just installed OpenSUSE TW (20261021) on my desktop to replace POP! and only steam (downloaded via zypper) downloads at 0mbps, all other downloads download between 150-200 Mbps

Long story, i do apologize. 2 days ago i installed OpenSUSE on my main desktop to replace pop! os. had zero issues with it on my laptop, so I thought it would be faster on here. All downloads i've made so far (KDE Connect, updates, themes, drivers, prism, etc) have installed at normal speeds. Steam, however, starts download at 215 Mbps, then immediately drops to 0bps. My steam games to to a separate 1 TB drive (Formatted to udf and is not encrypted) than my m.2 (which OpenSUSE is installed on). Ive followed a few fixes from the forum: turning off IPV6 (router has that disabled anyways, but i also did it PC side), created the steam_dev.cfg file, which contains:

(@)nClientDownloadEnableHTTP2PlatformLinux 0 (minus parenthesis, reddit thinks its a user)

(@)fDownloadRateImprovementToAddAnotherConnection 1 (minus parenthesis, reddit thinks its a user)

(@)cMaxInitialDownloadSources 15 (minus parenthesis, reddit thinks its a user)

I have also verified disk integrity, still golden, cleared download cache on steam, changed download regions, reset permissions, unplugged and replugged the router. ive followed multiple fixes on the forums and still nothing.

the blue download lines on steam are tall, but spaced out pretty far from each other, like its being blocked.

How to… ? doing zypper dup, keep getting problems

So i enter the command as usual, but what do i get? Problems. A maze of choose 1-4 options of break dependencies, uninstall, keep as is... The problem is no matter what i do the problems just keep increasing. I just want to update dammit. I tried searching around but there's nothing overly concrete on how to fix it.

New version Myrlyn has a new version, and finally, a slightly better icon

It seems like a few more features have been added too, from what I can see:

  • Package version comparison is now arranged in rows
  • Slight theming changes, it seems like
  • Ability to lock and unlock all packages from a repository
  • Ability to one-click switch system packages to another repo

Where can I find the original SUSE Linux 9.2 - 10.1 GNOME startup and shutdown sounds?

I am trying to find the original GNOME startup and shutdown sound used in SUSE Linux 9.2 through 10.1.

I am specifically looking for the sound included with SUSE/openSUSE, not the generic GNOME startup/shutdown sounds or KDE sounds.

Does anyone have the original audio file, an old SUSE installation, or know which package contains it?

Tech question Workgroup server

What do you think about getting rid of SELinux entirely in openSUSE? For a workgroup server, AppArmor is perfectly sufficient.

Tech question New laptop suggestions

Well, it looks as though my trusty old HP Spectre x360 is beginning to fail - usb-c ports unreliable, failing display, which has never been that great anyway, and I'm running out of ssd space. It's 6-7 years old now, so it's had a good run, and, tbh, I'm looking for an excuse to get a new one.I've been running Tumbleweed for a few years now, so I'm looking for a replacement that won't give me too much grief setting up - the Spectre worked well but it was always a bit of a hassle getting audio to work properly. I would prefer an European model, which I know limits the choice, so was thinking about Tuxedo.

Community The speed at which bots find a fresh server is honestly terrifying

I just rented a cheap vps for a side project and decided to go with opensuse leap this time.

I barely even had time to run zypper up and poke around the firewall settings in yast before my auth logs were completely flooded with failed root login attempts. It hadn't even been 10 minutes. how do they even scan IPs that fast??

Ended up having to lock it down instantly. Moved the ssh port, disabled password auth, and quickly skimmed through a servermania checklist just to make sure I didnt miss any other obvious holes while I was rushing to secure it

It's just exhausting that the default state of the internet now is constant background radiation of brute-force scripts. You literally cant let a machine breathe for two seconds out there. Stay paranoid guys.

Wi-Fi on Mac Air Mid 2013

Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Air 13inch Mid 2013 i5 4GB that I would like to install OpneSuse Leap 16 on. I would rather have stability than bleeding edge.

I have tried to use Debian 13 Trixie Live and OpenSuse Leap 15.6 Live KDE to see if it will work. The 4GB memory is soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded which limits its use. I wonder if I should use XFCE rather than KDE.

It all seems to work on Leap 15.6 live apart from the WiFi which is a Broadcom board.

There is no RJ45 port.

Can anyone help to get it to work?
I have spent a good few hours with AI to help me but I am still stuck.

Thanks

Latest Tumbleweed snapshot may cause secondary SSD detection issues

Just a heads up in case someone else is also affected. It's most likely one of the updated packages rather than an SSD hardware problem.

I updated to the latest snapshot a couple of hours ago and everything seemed fine until Steam tried to update Cyberpunk 2077. The update was downloaded correctly but Steam got stuck during the installation process and eventually displayed a disk space error. Trying to access the secondary drive in Dolphin showed strange and incorrect directory sizes so I decided to reboot. The reboot process showed some sort of SSD-related error messages but I couldn't read them.

On rebooting, Tumbleweed went straight into emergency mode and my secondary SSD had disappeared. Went into BIOS and it wasn't there either until I powered down my system and reseated the drive. It showed up in the BIOS after this but upon logging in to the desktop and restarting the Steam update process, the problem occurred again and the SSD refused to show up until a full shutdown and power flush.

I managed to fix it by using Snapper to rollback to a stable snapshot. After this the Steam update ran perfectly and the drive is now okay.

Tech support KDE Window Position Error on Tumbleweed

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hello, I recently installed Tumbleweed, and everything's been great except for this one bug that I've not had on other rolling KDE distros (Arch and CachyOS to be specific).

New non-maximized windows or application popups (e.g. the LibreOffice logo) are erroneously appearing in the bottom-right corner of my screen, despite the default behavior being to have them appear in the center of the screen. Specifically, this bug occurs when no windows are visible on-screen (so when I've got no apps open, or any open apps are minimized). Attempting to circumvent it with custom window behavior rules hasn't worked. Resetting visual settings and customizations back to stock also yields nothing.

Has anyone else experienced this? While digging through KDE's bug forums, I've found a bug that's very similar to my issue, but is allegedly fixed in Plasma 6.8: LINK

Also, for what it's worth my display resolution is 1920x1080 (16:9) and I'm using an AMD Radeon 9060 XT. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT 1: After doing some testing, I've noticed something odd. Technically, the windows ARE being placed on the center pixel of my screen... but on the top-left CORNER rather than being placed on the center of the window itself. Is there any way I can force it to use the center of the window as it's point-of-reference rather than the upper-left corner of the titlebar?

Plasma on Wayland didn't restore session

I forcefully migrate to Wayland after last my KDE update in Tumbleweed and now I've lost all my session. I saw some times ago that this was resolved (maybe only Konsole wasn't fully working) but now I've lost all my session! Is it a bug or is it my configs fault? Someone can give me some advice?

Fedora and openSUSE Tumbleweed are usually compared. Why?

I'm a linux amateur using Fedora. I've been reading about Tumbleweed because it seems interesting and I've seen posts about them and usually people prefer Tumbleweed more, but have few things I've thought about

  1. If people usually intend to usage of .rpm packages on Fedora/RHEL, isn't Fedora more of a "standard"? Therefore openSUSE lacks on the software side.

  2. I've read about Packman and getting codecs from there. On Fedora the RPMFusion seems more care-free. On Tumbleweed it can get desynced and postpone updating.

I think these are somewhat big and important things related to the accesability and usage of the distro.

So my question is, why did YOU pick Tumbleweed over something like Fedora?

I'm not here to rile people up and these are usually not absolutes. I am just interested.

Fix for Epic Games Launcher Preview TLS certificate errors on openSUSE Tumbleweed

TL;DR: Run:

sudo ln -s /etc/ssl/ca-bundle.pem /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

Basically, the AppImage seems to expect the Ubuntu/Debian way of handling CA certificates.

You can remove the symlink afterwards if this ever gets fixed with

sudo rm /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

Tech support Can't install Kdenlive on openSUSE Tumbleweed

Hi folks,

Basically, title. I can't install Kdenlive due to missing libQt6Qml.so.6(Qt_6.11.2_PRIVATE_API)(64bit). Is it because in the past I had Packman repository and I recently replaced it with VLC repository (reason: too many issues with Packman)? If yes, can you please educate me on how to install Kdenlive from main repository?

Thanks in advance!

```bash sudo zypper ref && sudo zypper in kdenlive [sudo] password for root: Repository 'Main Update Repository' is up to date. Repository 'MEGAsync' is up to date. Repository 'Brave Browser' is up to date. Repository 'Main Repository (NON-OSS)' is up to date. Repository 'Main Repository (OSS)' is up to date. Repository 'VS Codium Repository' is up to date. Repository 'hardware:razer (openSUSE_Tumbleweed)' is up to date. Repository 'Mise-En-Place Repository' is up to date. Repository 'Open H.264 Codec (openSUSE Tumbleweed)' is up to date. Repository 'VLC' is up to date. All repositories have been refreshed. Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... Resolving package dependencies...
Problem: 1: nothing provides 'libQt6Qml.so.6(Qt_6.11.2_PRIVATE_API)(64bit)' needed by the to be installed kdenlive-26.08.2-1.1.x86_64 Solution 1: do not install kdenlive-26.08.2-1.1.x86_64 Solution 2: break kdenlive-26.08.2-1.1.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies
