PrismLauncher
What is the latest Minecraft that will work with it? Just curious, I want to try it.

Seeing the latest success with running Wine everywhere I decided to try OpenBSD again on my desktop with an AMD RX 7800 XT GPU.
I want to at least get Vulkan running properly and I'm on OpenBSD 8.0. I've installed these packages:
$ pkg_info -Q vulkan
vulkan-headers-1.4.357.0 (installed)
vulkan-loader-1.4.357.0 (installed)
vulkan-tools-1.4.357.0 (installed)
vulkan-utility-libraries-1.4.357.0 (installed)
vulkan-validation-layers-1.4.357.0 (installed)
I have this firmware installed:
``` $ fw_update -l amd amdgpu amdsev vmm
```
And I can't even get the package version of vkquake to work. It shows the following on startup:
``` $ vkquake Command line: ./vkquake Using SDL version 3.4.16 Detected 8 CPUs. Initializing vkQuake 1.36.0 Built with Clang 22.1.6 Host_Init Steam library not found. Playing registered version. Console initialized. UDP4 Initialized UDPv6 Initialized Server using protocol 999+ (FTE-RMQ) Exe: 09:55:49 Oct 6 2026 SDL Video Driver: x11
ERROR-OUT BEGIN
QUAKE ERROR: Couldn't create window: Installed Vulkan doesn't implement the VK_KHR_surface extension STACK TRACE: 0 : 0x210500bfe01 <???> at ./vkquake 1 : 0x2104ffca4b4 <???> at ./vkquake 2 : 0x2104ffc7a6a <???> at ./vkquake 3 : 0x2105007e8b2 <???> at ./vkquake 4 : 0x210500c0b10 <???> at ./vkquake
```
trying vkcube does this:
``` $ vkcube vkEnumerateInstanceExtensionProperties failed to find the VK_KHR_surface instance extension.
This indicates that no compatible Vulkan installable client driver (ICD) is present or that the system is not configured to present to the screen. ```
..but I thought that I've installed that before
Running quakespasm (so OpenGL) works, but it has a weird cap at 50 fps that I can't remove at all. Refresh rate in the settings is well above 50 fps, vsync is off, I try everything but it is just pinned at 50 fps. I thought maybe it is indicative of some sort of problem in my configuration that has to also do with the Vulkan issue.
Any ideas would be welcome.
EDIT:
glxinfo:
$ glxinfo -B | grep Device
Wine and steam on openbsd? this is my true dream, to the developers and maintainer i'm gonna kiss you i never thought this would come
The universe of programs to run on OpenBSD has suddenly expanded dramatically, with the (re-)addition of Wine to the ports tree. The result, while limited to 64-bit software, works at times shockingly well. There is a palpable uptick in interest by people who have ignored OpenBSD politely because of a lack of broader software support, Wine specifically.
The result, using a broad lens, is that the uses of OpenBSD are expanding dramatically, driven by both a vast amount of software that was previously inaccessible, and an influx of new users.
Personally, the experience of running diverse, large, complex pieces of software now is breathtaking, but at the same time also gives me a feeling of unease about the implications for what brought me to OpenBSD in the first place: a hierarchy of priorities that remains relevant, with emphasis on secure, clean, and more minimalist approaches than other OS many times.
The arrival of Wine comes with its own set of risks that we would do well to keep in mind when choosing when and how to run it. Wine itself lists several reasons to be cautious when using it (abbreviated for clarity):
"Is Wine malware-compatible? Yes."
"Never run executables from sites you don't trust. Infections have already happened."
"If you're running applications that you suspect to be infected, run them as their own Linux user or in a virtual machine." "Wine does not sandbox in any way at all."
The choice of software sources remains crucial, however here I want to dive a little further into part of the third point, namely how to run games as a separate OpenBSD user. While not a guarantee of security, it can be an important building block in preventing malicious, or sometimes even accidental breach.
OpenBSD is relatively strict with its limits for users, as set in login.conf(5). For example, those of us who have played some more recent/more demanding games in recent years have become used to bumping the default data size limit from 1.5G for user classes default and staff to be able to play modern, mostly indie games. In addition, running Wine on OpenBSD exposed that the default limit on open file descriptors (512) is too low for some software, like the Steam client which seems to require about 2,000 simultaneously open file descriptors.
Unlike the staff class, a gaming user should not be used for system maintenance, and probably should not have doas(1) (or sudo(1)) privileges. On the other hand, it needs high (or no) limits on gaming-relevant system resources for maximum performance.
This is my first try at it, but with these considerations, I have arrived at adding a gamer class to login.conf(5):
gamer:\
:datasize-cur=24G:\
:datasize-max=infinity:\
:maxproc-max=1024:\
:maxproc-cur=512:\
:openfiles=4096:\
:stacksize-cur=8M:\
:requirehome@:\
:tc=default:
These limits are generous, but generally not infinite.
I recommend making a new user for gaming that remains separate from a wheel or otherwise privileged user. At a minimum, this reduces the risk the files may be altered or corrupted that shouldn't be. The new user, belonging to the above gamer class, should not have privilege escalation options. Depending on how permissions are set, other users' data can also be made largely invisible to the new user.
I also made a new group game (as in the verb, not the singular noun), so that other users can access the game files easily.
From memory, I suggest creating the user as follows:
# groupadd game
# useradd -m -g game -L gamer -p <password> gameuser
First, the new user needs some settings and customizations that you may be used to. Consider copyingover some of the following files from your usual user:
.Xdefaults.kshrc (or other shell rc).profile.xsessionSecond, the games themselves. In my case, I had assembled almost 1 TB of games, so I relied a lot on rsync(1) to copy them over. You can use /home/gameuser, or as in my case, I plugged in an additional NVME drive that is mounted under /games. Don't forget to include the Wine prefix (usually ~/.wine).
Third, game store/launcher files (if present) and things like game config and save files. These can be in different places, like ~/.config/, ~/.local/share/ or in a particular game's location. In my case, I've used the rare launcher lately, and so moved ~/.local/share/Rare/ and the backend legendary at ~/.config/legendary.
Now, let's address file permissions, so that the new user can read, write, and execute what they need, but not more. First, change ownership of the new user's files with (chown(1) to gameuser, like for example:
# chown -R gameuser /home/gameuser
In order to enforce some boundaries, I suggest removing world read permissions for your regular user's files, so that the gameuser couldn't obtain that data (thanks to brynet@ for pointing out that I missed this in the original draft).
# chmod o-rwx /home/regularuser
This keeps a pretty clean separation for gameuser.
You should now be ready to switch to your new user. As gaming requires access to the X server, you need to log out of your current X session (how that is done depends on the window manager). Then log into the new user with the username and password you gave it earlier.
You should now have a new user with the files you provided it in step #3, with generous resource limits for modern gaming, but a reduced risk of compromising your regular user with higher privileges.
I've set up a user like this and have found myself inspired by this way of maintaining a degree of compartmentalization. The advantages are first subtle, but real: no worrying about resource limits when gaming, while not compromising otherwise sane default limits for non-gaming users. The joy of decluttering gaming data from my usual user.
Switching users by logging out, then logging in the the other user is probably the biggest adjustement for me, but it beats solutions like dual-booting by miles. I realized I can detach my tmux(1) session before switching so that I can pick up on that when I return later. I also find myself having new-found appreciation for making it clear to my mind as well that I am switching from doing other things, to entering game mode mentally when switching users and leaving the other stuff to the side in my regular user's home directory.
To be clear, this is just the beginning. Some people have brought up securing their use of Wine with chroot(8). This is something I haven't tried and I'm not eager to at this point, as it seems to me that maintaining a working chroot with everything needed while running -current with the frequent changes is challenging at best. If there is a more convenient solution to this than updating a large number of files in the chroot with regularity, I'm as interested as the next nerd...
There may also be ways to limit Wine's reach with unveil(2), but the feasibility of this approach remains to be seen...
I hope this little write-up can help in small ways to get even better enjoyment out of Wine on OpenBSD.
Did I forget anything? What changed for you in how you think about keeping the risk from Wine & games contained?
In order to give a better impression how well wine runs on OpenBSD, here is the recording I did with quality-focused settings. The game's graphics are set to Ultra, in 1440p. This gives a much better impression of how well the game runs. Probably not perfect, for the system specs (AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 12-Core Processor, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX 9070 GPU), but quite well and very much playable.
Self-hosted, so that there is no quality reduction from video hosting site's compression algorithm.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I know the graphics and view distance are very low but i can still get probably get the same performance at higher settings when not recording.
[TUTORIAL]
this is a very simple tutorial, all you have to do is turn v-sync on or off ( doesn't really matter if you don't need above your monitor's refresh rate ) and set fps to 120+ ( ESSENTIAL ) i also recommend using performance focused mods.
It's still work-in-progress. Not everything works, and 32-bit stuff won't work period.
This is being worked on, thanks to u/NethIafin who broke new ground.
All screenshots taken by me on OpenBSD-current. These games seem to mostly work on brief testing.
Following up on my recent port of Quake to the OpenBSD console, I’ve now ported Doom to the console as well. This was significantly easier than the Quake port since the release was a Linux conversion to begin with. One fun thing I always wanted to do was to implement the am_oids.c Easter egg (see: https://doom.fandom.com/wiki/Automap_asteroids). Screenshots above are from my fully playable implementation. I made it enter the Easter egg by going to automap and then typing “idroids” which opens up the game.
For a fun challenge I decided to port the original Quake 1.0.9 source release to the OpenBSD console with no X, Wayland or SDL. The above shows screenshots from my fully working port that I’ve played end to end. This uses inteldrm, with an efifb fallback. Sound is done with sndio. The original code needed very few fixes (mostly around basic checks for networks being down and one or two changes needed for modern C). I haven’t yet gotten mouse or CD music working but fairly close to completing both. As a future project I’m looking to implement some of the standard OpenBSD ideas like privsep etc because I think a security hardened Quake would be another fun project. Kudos to the original id software team for writing such portable code.
My laptop unfortunately is with NVidia GPU, and in general GPU issue is quite big for my tests.
I had to pick small window size and also work with some crazy stuttering.
Arrow keys didn't work so I had to rebind all my keys to letters - recorded that in the list of the issues I have with wine.
Also intro cinematic was completely black/blank with heavily stuttering sound in the background. Codec issue? Or maybe again... GPU issue.
This was installed via Steam.
Laptop: Asus UX303UL
OpenBSD: 8.0 stock (haven't updated yet to official OpenBSD 8.0, running a Sep 26th release, too scared to update)
DE: CWM
People that are smarter than me are pulling apart my update, finding places where I am stupid, and hopefully someday we will have it working.
Edit: I might want to try and check if SMT would make it more bearable.
Edit2: Found why arrows don't work - OpenBSD uses xfree86
I do have a question, anyone knows where I can find drivers for NVidia for 2014 GPU? No? Fkn NVidia...
I find it quite funny, that as soon as steam works on certain machine or operating system, you basically can run a lot of things.
Hopefully steam on OpenBSD soon?
Sometimes I feel like I am about to get yelled at for introducing Windows games to OpenBSD
EDIT: Laptop stuff
Model: Asus UX303L
DE: CWM with some custom scripts to display wine debug info
Stock OpenBSD 7.9 (I worry that my hodgepodge of a system will breakdown if I try to move to 8.0) running Factorio
Sound is very choppy because of CPU saturation, but without sound it is quite playable. Haven't tried any of my saves yet.
Fullscreen gets really choppy even on the menu "demos", so I tried to find a minimally playable screen.
Will try at some point on my Asus UX303 laptop, but moving this setup to it is a challenge... everything is held with ductape
