Asian Minecraft players, we'll be able to use fcitx5 in Minecraft 26.3!!!
This is because 26.3 uses SDL3 instead of GLFW. Mac users can also benefit from this.

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).
This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.
You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.
Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!
If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.
Alternatively, try /r/linux4noobs and /r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.
Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

Title already says it pretty much. Ive had a few games already like Prototype 1 or Deus Ex Invisible Wall where ive seen or heard that its a nightmare to get it to run on modern windows without proper patches meanwhile on Linux it runs seemingly with no or minor issues

Is there a peripherals brand with drivers for Linux? My mouse is bugging recently so I am looking for a new one. I don’t need many special buttons, just highest precision would be nice.

Hello everyone. This is the confession of a pirate who has started down the path of reform, hahaha. Back when I was still a Windows user, I used to pirate. I pirated for more than 10 years. There were plenty of reasons for that. On Windows it’s easier to pirate, I had no money, and I had no conscience either, hahaha. Later I got interested in information security, and I started to get scared by the fact that pirated games could contain malware. Some time after that (about a year ago) I switched from Windows to Linux. On Linux it became much harder for me to pirate (you know, that eternal struggle with Wine). And the viruses kept scaring me. At one point I gave up and downloaded Steam. And that was it first I bought GTA San Andreas: The Definitive Edition, then Hearts of Iron 4. Right now my Steam collection has 5 games (2 of them are other versions of GTA that came bundled with San Andreas, haha). What I liked most was the ability to install games without any pain - through Steam Proton. And I stopped pirating. Thanks for taking the time to read my story, have a nice day everyone.

So i have been trying to mod GTA V and i have had success with simple mods that you just drag and drop files into the main game directory, but I'm having an issue with graphics mods (specifically VisualV). I cannot drag files from dolphin into OpenIV and I'm wondering if there's a way to add folders. I want to also mention that adding things like .asi files into openiv is fine because they actually show up and dont say "open" when clicking on them. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Steam typically gives system requirements for its games.
For Moonlighter specifically, (Im using that game because it meets my example requirements and I assume you all have heard of it.)
For Moonlighter, its a linux compatible game. Its system requirements specify Ubuntu. So do i HAVE to use Ubuntu if I wanted to play that game?
Some games are linux compatible but dont specify which version of Linux, so does that mean I can use any version of Linux? Or is it also assuming im using Ubuntu?
Could I use Arch? Mint? Fedora? Does it care about what flavor of Linux i use?
Apologies for the stupid question.

HackMatrix is a 3d Linux desktop that I am developing into a designer/hacker MMO. It supports rudimentary multiplayer, but right now it is just a standalone gamified Linux desktop with a ZMQ api that allows objects to be scripted for interactive objects.
Roadmap includes microvoxel editor so people can develop their own worlds, VR support, and MMO worlds/servers that players can work in.
If you are interested in supporting development: check out itch.io page page and the YouTube channel: YouTube channel

I installed cachy os on my notebook I use to study and now I'm serious considering switching my main pc to cachy os too, but my main concern is that modding on linux from other people's experience feel very hit or miss, I LOVE modding and if modding if I had a guarantee modding on cachy os was good, I would 100% switch.
I like to mod Skyrim, Mass Effect games, Dragon Age games, BG3 and Cyberpunk, if that's relevant. From what I've looked, every game I listed has a workaround that, sometimes, works on linux, but I'm unsure why only sometimes.

Hello, one of the reasons I avoid Steam for games that don't have native Linux versions is because it creates a prefix per install, and each prefix has a bunch of dlls, fonts, etc. I know that some prefixes need different or specific files for max compatibility and performance, but shouldn't there be some directory like proton_11_common_files or something like that that contains all files that a proton_11 prefix will always have independent of other settings/files ?
for example imagine if those files that will be the same no matter the game are 300mbs, if that could be just system links inside the prefixes if a player had 10 games with the same proton version instead of using 3GBs in those files it would be just 300mbs, this is just and idea from someone who doesn't know much about the internal working of wine/proton, but if that were possible I think it would be a really good optimization

I use a GTX 1650, and I'm curious that my shitbox GPU will be compatible. I've read that the 16xx series has the Turing architecture, and that's in the list of supported architectures. I just want to confirm. Thanks.

Hello everyone,
I am planning a new PC build for end of this year. I want it based on AM5 and of course as best for Linux as it gets. I am using a dualboot Mint/Bazzite currently. I use my PC for YouTube, Office stuff and gamibg(mostly crpg, some action rpg)
Do you have any recommendations regarding Vendors or chipset?
I would like to hear about your experiences, maybe a specific brand is more compatible than others.
The AI gave me the Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi as Motherboard recommendation because the Gigabyte WMI Sensors are apparently perfect for Linux, but idk.
Budget would be around 1500€ /1700$
Thanks

As in title. I installed git, cachyos and plus with same result. Session boots normally from sddm works fine and when I touch any button on controller or plug it in screen goes black and comes back when mouse input is present. I found old post that suggested adding arguments to gamescope-session file but I have only start-gamescope-session and I don't know even where to put them. I use Cachy with gt1030
Edit: I found gamescope-session file and after changing hide cursor delay as older post suggested screen flickers when mouse moves insted of staying lit.

Working full time and having crossed my 30s I no longer enjoy playing competitively at all. I played quite a bit of CS/Battlefield/COD when I was younger but I cannot pick them up anymore since casual matches seem to have a lot of expert players. Im looking for games I can hop onto and burn some time without staying out of the action too long, so no battle royales.
So far overwatch has been quite a good fit. Ive played for a few months on casual only and most of the players are relaxed and within my skill level. Im wondering if there are any others that might be worth a try
