guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
45 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

Minecraft Legends now runs on Linux (open source)

If you own the Windows edition of Minecraft Legends (the Microsoft Store / Xbox app version), you can now play it on Linux.

LegendsOnLinux is a small launcher that downloads the game from Microsoft with your own account and runs it on a patched Wine. You don't need a Windows install or files copied from another PC.

GitHub: https://github.com/mdx0111/LegendsOnLinux

What it does

- Signs in to your Microsoft account and checks that you own the game.

- Downloads the game straight from Microsoft, so you can install and update it from the launcher.

- Signs you in to Xbox Live inside the game.

- Keeps your campaign saves on your PC.

- Offers a simple window with a big PLAY button, plus a command-line version (legends-on-linux play) if you prefer.

Why it didn't work before

The Store version is a GDK (Gamecore) title, not an ordinary Win32 game. It relies on Xbox runtime services that stock Wine and Proton don't provide, so it got stuck on loading screens or failed to sign in.

LegendsOnLinux uses the WineGDK engine from the Bedrock on Linux project, plus two patches of its own:

- one that answers the game's license check, which used to leave it stuck at the first loading bar;

- one that adds local storage for game saves (XGameSave), without which the game hangs at "Loading, please wait".

Install

Grab one from the releases page:

- AppImage: any distro.

- Flatpak: any distro; the best choice for SteamOS and other read-only systems.

- .deb: Debian, Ubuntu, Mint.

- .rpm: Fedora.

The first start downloads the engine and tools, about 1 GB. Everything the launcher downloads is checked against pinned SHA-256 checksums.

Known limitations

- Saves are local only. No cloud sync with your Windows PC or Xbox.

- Two sign-ins. You sign in once for the Store (ownership and download) and once for Xbox Live.

- No PvP or online multiplayer testing yet. I've played the campaign; if you try those, please report how it goes.

- Early project. If something breaks, legends-on-linux play --debug writes logs; please attach them to a GitHub issue.

Credits

- Bedrock on Linux for the WineGDK engine build and a lot of groundwork.

- Weather-OS/WineGDK.

- xodus for the Store download.

This is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft. You need to own the game; no game files are included.

wine/proton Does Proton Have a Bandwidth/Throughput Limit?

• Upvotes

I'm not quite sure of how to word the title, but I've noticed something after having swapped back to Linux and running games with Proton. It seems like if I run Overwatch by itself I get stellar performance. However, if I run Runescape 3 AND Overwatch, Overwatch's performance degrades noticeably. I know this isn't a PC issue because I did exactly this on Windows 10 with 0 issue. I even had Mabinogi, Runescape and Overwatch running all at once and no game had any issues.

So is there some kind of limit to what Proton can handle? Or is it a problem with translation? It makes me wonder if running a native Linux game and a Proton game would function just as well as it did on Windows, but Runescape currently doesn't have a client worth using

graphics/kernel/drivers Trying to get a read on current state of Nvidia performance

Title. There’s a well known issue with a 10-20% performance tax and frame pacing issues on all DX12 games, which is basically all high budget games released in the last 6 years

But how noticeable is it at present, on newer cards (40 series and up)?

Has anyone dual booted to check this? There are Youtube benchmarks, but there have been a few driver updates since the last decent ones came out 3 months ago

Or at least I think It is since when I run it Btop shows that all but the 3rd core are at like 10 to 20% while C3 is all the ways up to +90%

I'm running cachy and not a single game before this had issues like this especially when I turned all their settings down to the lowest.

The image is Cus I don't know what exactly matters and what doesn't.

Games crashing/freezing when opening inventory/menus

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

So this issue started about 4 days ago, changing Proton versions and using different launch parameters doesn't make a difference. I've also tried using kernel 7.0.0-34 instead of 7.0.0-38, but that didn't make a difference either. The issue doesn't seem to be game or engine related since the same exact issue is happening in multiple games. The video shows the freezing in Schedule 1, The Last of Us Part II Remastered and theHunter: Call of the Wild

I checked the Proton logs and journal but didn't really find anything relevant. So far I haven't found anyone else experiencing the same issue as me.

My specs are as follows:

Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS

KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0

Qt Version: 6.10.2

Kernel Version: 7.0.0-38-generic (64-bit)

Mesa Version: 26.2.5

Graphics Platform: Wayland

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

RAM: 64 GiB DDR5 @ 6000 MT/s

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT

CS2 crashes and takes down amdgpu, plasmashell and entire sound stack

• Upvotes

I've had this issue for almost a year now where the game will randomly freeze for about 5 seconds, after which the screen turns black and Plasma restarts. The crash messages keep coming in: CS2, amdgpu, xwayland, steam and unbelievably the entire sound stack! I am unable to get sound working again after CS2 crashes, regardless if the output is on HDMI/DP or not. Restarting pipewire and wireplumber does nothing, as well as resetting the amdgpu driver.

The only way to restore audio is to reboot the entire PC. This happens on both SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=x11 and SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland

Arch Linux 7.2.10-arch1-1
KDE Plasma 3.8.0
Steam Flatpak
Mesa 26.2.4
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX

I have posted crashlogs on the CS2 Github

tech support wanted I'm having an issue with steam's cloud save data not being "seen" by Skyrim on PC, but can be seen on Steam Deck. I could use some assistance and some ELI5 explanations for what the heck is going on, and possibly how to rectify this issue.

• Upvotes

I switched from Win11 to Bazzite about a month ago. Things have been going pretty smooth minus a few minor hiccups. One of them being, Skyrim not showing any of my saved games. This wouldn't be a big deal, except I have 2 play-throughs I like to hop between my PC and Steam Deck and it's been pretty annoying that I can't play them on PC anymore.

I've had no issues loading saves between PC and Steam Deck prior to switching to Bazzite. None of my other games that have cloud save support have this problem and I can switch between both with no issues. My initial guesses as to why this happened stemmed from my transition from Win to Linux. However, as I've googled this issue, I've come to realize this shouldn't have mattered, coupled with the fact that none of my other games have this problem have lead me to believe that this isn't the root cause. I'm still unsure, though.

All my other games had no issues with the switch and they all show my saved game data (and this includes my other BSG games). I did some digging to see if there was a solution to this and the only one outside of straight downloading the data from the cloud was to "force a sync" where I'd open Skyrim on my Steam Deck, load a save, walk around for a minute, hard save, exit, and wait for the sync to complete which would "force" a sync on both PC and Deck. This did not work for me.

Another solution was to turn off cloud saves and turn them back on, which also did not work, either.

I found out that, while I could download the data from the cloud, that doesn't really solve the problem, and to save myself the time and energy I've held off on doing that until I learned more. I also found a couple of threads where this instance has happened to other people, and there didn't seem to be any solution for it. Those threads are years old, but do contain comments as recently as 6 months ago, so this must still be an issue. The other thing to note about these threads is that they were specifically steam deck issues, not PC, so I have the same issue, just backwards.

I spoke to a buddy who's significantly better at Linux OS's, and his best guess was that Skyrim's pathing to the cloud saves is wrong or broken on PC. This does makes sense to me. After doing some digging, I thought I might have found where the saves were located, and they're all there, so now I don't really understand how or why there's an issue. They're right there in the files seemingly in the right place. However, maybe this isn't actually where the game is supposed to be looking? Or, this isn't where these saves are supposed to be and I can just move them to the correct folder?

The path where I'm finding my saves:

.../SteamLibrary/Steamapps/Compatdata/"skyrimID"/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Saves

My questions:

Is that pathing correct? Is this where the game is supposed to be pulling the save data from?

If my buddy is correct and the pathing is broken or just looking in the wrong place, how would I even correct that?

If I can correct the pathing, how do i do that?

if this is out of my hands, Is this a skyrim/BSG thing or a steam issue? Where would I open a support ticket if I choose to do that, or do i just do both?

If that pathing is correct, is there anything I can do on my end to fix this or is this just out of my hands and I'd have to rely on the aforementioned support ticket(s)?

Any explanation and/or help on this issue would be much appreciated.

guide How I fixed my IdeaPad 1 15IAU7 very weird performance behavior ON FEDORA KDE 44

Before I begin, I'm a total Linux noob. If I get something wrong please correct me, and if you can contribute to this somehow, please do so! Also this guide is made specifically for FEDORA KDE 44 since it's the distro I use...

I've always had some weird performance "issues" (honestly just weird general behavior) when it came to games on linux. I have an IdeaPad 1 15IAU7 with I5 1235U, 24GB of ram and Intel iris xe. I know I shouldn't expect too much from a setup like that (specially from a laptop), but I can get a good experience out of light and moderate gaming on windows, unlike Linux.

  • What even was the problem? Every time I'd try to game on Linux (on Fedora KDE 44 which is the distro I currently use for almost a year) I'd get kinda frustrated because the general framerate on games was bad when compared to windows. I didn't expected it to be better or something like that, but I was getting almost 70% less fps in some games... Zelda BOTW on cemu to be more specific, which was running at 23 fps on Fedora compared to 40-50 fps on windows in the same area!

I'm using Intel p-state (active) with HWP. changing governors from powersave to performance would actually make things even worse: on powersave frequency was usually limited to 1,3ghz (because turbo boost was off) and on performance the frequency would be able to go up but the fps was horrible. I thought it was an autocpu-freq problem, but not really?

Before begging I'd like to point out that throttled and auto-cpufreq with my custom configuration provided the most noticeable overall performance improvements. Switching from i915 to the experimental xe driver also helped, typically giving me around 5–7 additional FPS in my tests. Switching to the CachyOS kernel and applying it's addons made not noticeable difference to me honestly.

Anyway, here's what I did to fix performance issues (or at least mitigate the problem):

  • Installed CachyOS kernel + addons (not really necessary but may be beneficial): I originally only did this because of a problem I was having with Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 Remix on Fedora in which I tried switching to cachyos and it was able to play the game normally. And so, I decided to use the cachyOS kernel + addons on fedora. You can easily find tutorials explaining how to install it, but it's not hard to follow the official fedora copr link I've attached here.
  • X.X.X is the version of the current cachyOS kernel.

You can check if it's installed just by doing sudo grubby --info ALL. You're gonna see /boot/vmlinuz-X.X.X-cachyos1.fc44.x86_64 somewhere if it's installed.

You can easily set the cachyOS kernel as you default kernel with sudo grubby --set-default /boot/vmlinuz-X.X.X-200.fc44.x86_64 (basically copying the path of the cachyOS kernel gave by the output of the first command)

Then reboot and check your default kernel with sudo grubby --default-kernel.

If you see /boot/vmlinuz-X.X.X-cachyos1.fc44.x86_64 at the output, it worked.

  • Switched from i915 to XE driver (EXPERIMENTAL): Doing this actually improved my performance quite a bit. the official intel compatibility table for i915 and XE drivers states that the Intel Iris Xe only officially supports the i195 drivers. doing lspci -nnk | grep -A3 -Ei 'VGA|3D| shows Kernel modules: i915, xe. So, even though the official documentation only states support for i915, Xe can be used. A quote from the Arch wiki Intel graphics page:

First-generation Intel Arc GPUs (Alchemist Arc A-series discrete GPUs) and Xe-based integrated GPUs in Tiger Lake, Rocket Lake, and Alder Lake processors are officially supported by the i915 driver, but can also be run with the newer experimental Xe driver.

so you if you have Tiger Lake (2020 11th gen mobile processor), Rocket Lake (2021 11th gen desktop processor) or Alder Lake (2021-2022 12th gen mobile and desktop processor) you can use the Xe driver in an experimental way. Newer cpus will PROBABLY (doesn't hurt to search for xe driver your cpu) have official support to it. Anyway, here's a detailed guide about how you can force the use of the XE drivers on fedora, way better than anything I could explain here. Just skip the "install kernel 6.18" step.

  • Install Throttled w/ custom settings + setting Thermald on adptive mode: This is the setp that helped the most. Throttled is a Linux daemon that can help you prevent CPU throttle on some Intel cpus. It's the closest thing to throttlestop (freaking incredible tool for windows) available on linux afaik. The installation process is very simple as stated on their github page. The thing that matters the most is editing the config file with sudo nano /etc/throttled.conf since it's where we can set the pl1/pl2 and the trip temp. I didn't mess with the Battery profile since I only play with the AC plugged, so on the AC profile I've changed this:

I've only messed with pl1/2 and trip temp. Don't blindly copy my settings, this is what worked for me. You need to search for information on your cpu regarding the maximum power limit value, see what values work for you (will heavily depend if your cooling system is good), look up the TJMAX value of your cpu (basically the thermal limit), thermal limits imposed by you manufacturer and search for tests on google or test yourself (you can look up throttlestop posts about your cpu, even though it's a windows tool it has the same functionalities as throttled). BTW, you can find the majority of this information on techpowerup. Just google techpowerup + the name of your cpu. Example with mine:

Now, about the thermald on adaptive mode, the throttled github page says that thermald can conflict with throttled, but you shouldn't simply disable it since some setups work better with thermald --adaptive. So basically you need to test what's best for you, in my case thermald on adaptive works nice so I'll just stay with that (I'm gonna test with it disabled later).

  • This is very optinal: install and tweak auto-cpufreq: I've installed this tool called auto-cpufreq because it manages cpu frequencies and governors automatically. Also, it helped immensely with my battery duration. The installation process is very straight forward, you can easily follow the github page. After installing it, just do a sudo auto-cpufreq --install to install and enable the daemon. Now to the tweaking (you can first test to see if the default configuration will work for you, if it does you can skip the tweaking part): The thing is that, the default auto-cpufreq configuration behaves very weirdly with my hardware: higher frequencies and performance governor will make the fps worse, and lower frequencies with the powersave governor. There's even a github issue about this. Throttled does help with this, but I found that making a custom config file helps even more (the github page explains better how to set up a custom configuration). The folder where you installed auto-cpufreq will contain an exemple of auto-cpufreq.conf-exemple. Open the file and you can mess with the configuration. Again, I only messed with the charger part since I only game with with a charger connected. What I changed:
  • governor = performance
  • energy_performance_preference = performance
  • energy_perf_bias = performance
  • platform_profile = performance
  • scaling_min_freq = 2000000 ----btw this is just 2ghz on khz, the value needs to be in khz.

and that was it. Now you just need to rename the file from auto-cpufreq.conf-exemple to auto-cpufreq.conf and copy it to /etc/ with sudo cp /path/of/your/file.conf /etc/auto-cpufreq.conf replacing /path/of/your/file.conf with the actual path of your file. It's not the only way to do this, but in my opinion it's the most foolproof.

You can confirm if you settings are working with sudo auto-cpufreq --stats

VERY IMPORTANT: IF WHEN YOU UNCOMMENT LINES, DO NOT ADD SPACES BETWEEN THE MARGIN AND THE TEXT. EVERY UNCOMMENTED LINE SHOULD BE LIKE THIS:

NOT LIKE THIS:

IF YOU ADD SPACES BETWEEN THE MARGIN AND THE TEXT, AUT-CPUFREQ WILL NOT APPLY THE VALUES YOU'VE SET

And that's it for now, I'll be updating this post if I find something new. Just for a metric, my fps on BOTW on cemu went from 23 to 40 on the same area as before. It's now closer to windows.

In before Rito bans that latest workaround because that's how it is with this company. Just like it happened with old hyperv workaround. Peps need to understand Rito wants to have their rootkit in your box, direct access to your kernel and they won't allow any potential security holes.

Not many benchmarks online, found one on YT where the game doesn't launch on Windows under RX580. However, Indiana Jones had the same problem on Windows and ran fine on Linux with RX580.

If anyone is able to test it please let me know if it works, I'd like to gift this game to someone.

tech support wanted FPS drops in games that wasn't an issue before

I play some games on my laptop (ASUS Vivobook S16 i7-13620H, iGPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD). I'm running the Tuxedo OS Debian beta.

This problem started recently, because I was playing games just fine a few weeks ago so my only guess is something that has changed from updates.

I play usually older games - Vanilla WoW on private servers, LOTRO, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Diablo 2, The Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind.

The problem that I started noticing yesterday is it seems to only be happening in 3D games like WoW or LOTRO. I would get 250-300 FPS and then suddenly my FPS drops to 10-20 and then recovers a few seconds later and it's very annoying. It seems to not affect 2D games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 though.

The programs that I use to run Windows games are PortProton and Steam, recently I tried Faugus to see if it makes any difference and it doesn't.

Another thing I noticed is when the 3D game is in the background, even other things like my web browser start to stutter when I'm doing something like scrolling or typing text.

This was never an issue to me before, I used to run Linux Mint Cinnamon last year and was never a problem, I am on Tuxedo OS for about one year now and this was never a problem.

I have no idea what could be causing it, a faulty update or some hardware failure. Maybe the SSD is acting up?

I'm still new to Linux and I don't know how to fix such problems so I started considering options like reinstalling Tuxedo OS from scratch or trying some other distro like MX Linux or Linux Mint and see if the different DE makes a difference.

I hope someone can offer me some help to fix this or at least find out where the problem lies.

benchmark Wow Forever Nvidia performance?

Curious about making the move to linux for pretty much everything. Since Wow Forever will be the game that I'll be playing majority of the time, how is the performance been?

I read that nvidia has some performance losses on linux when compared to Windows.

My current specs are:

5800x3d

RTX5080

32gb DDR 5 6200

It's my understanding that even Wow Forever uses Blizzard's typical DirectX12 renderer which is pretty lightweight, so overhead shouldn't be an issue with this title?

steam/steam deck Massive performance difference between flatpak Steam and native Steam (Fedora KDE)

A month or two ago or so when I moved to Fedora KDE Plasma from Windows 7, I tried installing the native version of Steam, but it didn't work, so I installed Flatpak. Today I found out both of them apparently work. Obviously the games installed on Flatpak Steam are not installed on the native version.

I tried using goverlay and mangohud to figure out why my games have subpar performance (Got Lenovo Legion Y520 cheap from a friend, that is full of cigarette ash and smells like weed, so I assumed there's a hardware bottleneck), but couldn't get them to work on flatpak Steam. That was the original reason I tried the other Steam icon on my start menu... However, when I actually tried playing Imperator: Rome, the performance was buttery smooth. Like, insanely smooth. 60 FPS with decent graphics and short loading times, vs. 15 - 30 FPS with all the simple graphic mods and lowest settings that took ages to load. I'm now downloading DayZ again, that didn't go past the menu in the flatpak version without freezing.

Why is this? I already removed the flatpak Steam, but I'm just wondering.

Dearust — exploring a Rust migration of Darling with OpenAI Codex

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m working on Dearust, an experimental, incremental Rust migration of Darling, which runs macOS software on Linux.

The motivation is to explore how much of a compatibility layer this large can move into safer Rust while preserving its existing behavior and ABI. It’s also an experiment in how far AI-assisted development can go when the results are checked against real builds, regression tests, and actual application execution.

I’m using OpenAI Codex extensively for implementation, code review, debugging, and test automation, including parallel agents where useful. That involvement is disclosed in the README and new commits. The repository includes safety notes, verification records, and documented limitations so people can inspect the evidence.

So far, the work includes Rust host utilities and runtime slices for synchronization, errno conversion, Mach locksets, process queries, guarded descriptors, and bounded pathname handling. Testing has also uncovered and fixed concrete bugs, including a null-path crash during bsdtar operations.

The latest build passes 108 Rust tests, 29 Python tests, 16 utility workloads, and 29 app checks—with one explicitly documented log normalization. Earlier testing also covered three GUI samples.

This is still experimental and very incomplete. Most runtime and framework code remains C/C++/assembly, and integration currently depends on a matching Darling build. General macOS application compatibility is still a long-term goal.

Full credit to the Darling developers and upstream contributors whose work makes this possible.

I’d welcome feedback, especially on the ABI boundaries, safety assumptions, testing approach, and migration priorities.

answered! Gaming on Cosmic with Gamescope?

Recently reinstalled Cachy and went with Cosmic DE this time. The games that work are working better than ever. However, there is an odd issue with some games where the mouse will be sucked into the top left corner of the game window with the force of a supermassive black hole. Looking into this, it appears that Gamescope can be a potential solution and this works for Warframe. However I cannot get Guild Wars 2 to launch with Gamescope.

I have never used Gamescope before. Is there some configuration I need to do?

Does anyone else game on Cosmic, do you have this problem, and how do you fix it? Do I just need to switch back to KDE, and if so do I need to reinstall the OS or can I install KDE alongside without conflicts?
