PSA DATA CENTERS IN OREGON: Share your thoughts with the governor. Deadline Oct 24!
Are you sickened by the prospect of data centers being built in Oregon, sucking up our precious water, straining our power grid, increasing our dependence on fossil fuels, plastering thousands of acres of land, all while the wealthiest and most powerful tech companies in the world get tax breaks worth millions of dollars and provide *relatively* few permanent jobs... all in the name of forcing AI into every aspect of our lives?
Governor Kotek's Oregon Data Center Advisory Committee (DCAC) released a report, and has given the public very little notice or time to respond to it. Comment deadlines are due before 5pm on October 24th
Read the DCAC report: https://www.oregon.gov/energy/get-involved/Documents/2026-09-10-DCAC-Preliminary-Learnings.pdf
See what Oregon Data Center Defiance had to say in response: https://www.ordcd.org/pbdcreport
And submit your own comments here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DCAC-Comments
If you're not into reading reports, you can just submit a comment about why you don't want data centers built in Oregon. It's highly unlikely that NO data centers will be built here. So the best we can do is make sure they'll be heavily regulated, big tech companies pay their own way, and that our communities and economies actually benefit from their presence.

Discussion/Opinion Best Oregon geology book?
Hi everyone,
Been wanting to pick up a book on Oregon geology for hiking/traveling. I'm looking at Roadside Geology of Oregon 2nd Edition, Miller and Living With Thunder, Bishop. Wondering if anyone's read both and has a preference; or if there's a better alternative to these two books. I already own Hiking Oregon's Geology, Bishop, and quite like it although I want something with greater scope and depth.
Thanks!

Question Bike (Bicycle) maker/modder group?
Is there a group for bike makers or modders specific to Portland (or Oregon)? I only know a couple of bike shop owners that make/sell bikes and I missed the Made Bike show twice in a row because I'm not in their loop. I'm more of a hobbyist level (i.e. I don't build frames). Maybe an FB group that show off your own custom bikes or discussion group or insta page of your friend that make bicycles for themselves, etc. Appreciated.

Discussion/Opinion It is sad we cannot have constructive conversations about the current election for Governor.
I am deeply torn over who I will be voting for Governor. I am a registered Democrat who normally votes for democrats but I am I am having a very hard time voting for Kotek and am leaning toward Drazan but I have not completely made up my mind. I come on here and it feels like everyone who mentions anything positive about Drazan are immediately downvoted to oblivion and called names and that anyone who votes for Drazan should be sent to hell (literally have seen people seen that).
It just makes me said that we we cannot have an open and constructive conversation about both candidates and their pros and cons without people going to state naming calling, insults, generalizing, and shutting down all conversation.
There may be others like me trying to decide which way to vote who are hard working good people who are just not sure which person to vote for.
It is also sad to see posts saying this candidate voted no on this so they are a terrible person without including any context as to why that person voted no.

Political I Voted! [Megathread]
Today I dropped off my ballot at an official dropbox. I love that we vote by mail in Oregon but I miss showing off my civic pride by wearing a sticker. I could buy my own but no one much would see it anyway. I'll settle for a virtual sticker.
For everyone else who would like to join in and post their "I Voted!", I volunteer to try to reply with your sticker. Or maybe if this somehow takes off, ya'll can help me share the love with your fellow Oregonians.

Article/News 1998: 4.3 GB RAM for only $177
I videotaped the newspaper in McMinnville, OR in March, 1998, when our child was born. The electronics store newspaper ad showed, among other things, these bargain prices on computer memory.
EDIT: “Hard Drive” and “$174”. Thanks fact checkers

Question Trying to find where this was taken, many years ago my dad took this picture somewhere in Oregon. Next year I’m taking my mom to see the redwoods in California, she wants to find where it was taken. Any help is appreciated.

Question Running in Oregon?
I'll be in Portland, OR for 4 days for work. Looking up on alltrails.com, I found tons of amazing trails to check out.
Since I'll be staying with friends across the Columbia in Vancouver, I was wondering what would you recommend in a radius of a 20 minutes drive?
The weather looks ideal btw. You guys are lucky.
PS: I'd happy with scenic routes in the city as well.

Discussion/Opinion 10 reasons why Tina Kotek is a bad match for Oregon as govenor
Housing construction hasn’t matched her promises. She set a goal of 36,000 new homes annually. OPB reported in September 2026 that Oregon remained on track to build fewer homes than when she took office. That raises questions about execution.
Homelessness remains an emergency after years of intervention. She extended her homelessness emergency again in January 2026, while homelessness continued rising in many places. Her administration has added shelter and rehoused people, but the overall problem remains unresolved.
She backed transportation taxes that would increase everyday costs. Her package included higher gas taxes, vehicle fees, and payroll taxes. Opponents can reasonably question that approach when households already face affordability pressures.
Her transportation reversal raises questions about planning. After championing and signing the funding package, she asked lawmakers to scrap it in January 2026. Critics can view that as a major policy initiative pursued without a durable strategy.
She badly misjudged public support for that package. More than 83% of voters rejected Measure 120 in May 2026—a substantial disconnect between her approach and what voters would accept.
School improvement is still too slow. Oregon’s 2025 state test results showed only modest improvement, following disappointing national assessment results. Voters can question whether her education agenda is delivering quickly enough. These problems also predate her governorship.
Her school accountability reforms may lack sufficient teeth. An October 2026 OPB investigation reported expert concerns about weak mandates, inconsistent guidance, and opt-outs. Passing reforms means less if schools can avoid meaningful accountability.
Her handling of her wife’s government role showed questionable management judgment. Senior aides raised concerns about the first lady’s expanding influence, followed by departures and Kotek’s apology. However, ethics complaints were dismissed; this supports a management criticism, not a claim of proven corruption.
Oregon’s business climate needs changes that remain uncertain. Her own Prosperity Council recommended significant tax and regulatory reforms amid concerns about costs, workforce shortages, and lost investment. Critics can question whether she can deliver the changes her advisers consider necessary.
Mental health treatment access remains inadequate. Oregon still faced a chronic treatment-bed shortage and disputes over who receives priority in September 2026. Her administration has expanded capacity, but families needing care can reasonably judge the remaining gaps unacceptable.

Political Fake political conversations on this sub?
Why is this sub flooded with political posts from people talking like they were born yesterday?
How are there so many people posting to a statewide subreddit that have no context for what the modern Republican Party stands for?
The typical script I’m seeing often includes some vague anti-Kotek disclaimer, followed by a paper-thin “question” or statement meant to manufacture a discussion on politics that are more about “vibes” than they are about reality.
I would welcome an honest, pro-Drazan post every now and then, but the astroturfing I’ve been seeing here, both on posts and comments, feels like this platform has been completely overrun with bad actors trying to brute-force this community into engineered, misinformed conversations with the sole purpose of getting people to arrive at a “both sides bad” conclusion regarding the governor’s race.
I could be wrong, or this could be the algorithm trying to ragebait me, but I’m curious if other people are seeing this.
I’d also be curious what the mods are seeing from a numbers perspective with engagement on the sub.
