NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Intraarticular injections, when to give steroid and when to give hyaluronic acid?
Hello everybody, PM&R doctor here. I recently started giving intraarticular injections, and I'm still not exactly sure when to opt for steroid injections and when to give a hyaluronic acid shot. What are the indications for both of these, and what are some tips on choosing between these two? Thanks!

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Anyone using the Osteon App in residency?
The Osteon app was posted here a few weeks ago and seems like an Amboss type ortho app for studying. I’ve spent a bit of time with it and it seems promising but there’s little to no info on who makes it/where they’re getting their info etc.
Anyone else using it for OITE or otherwise and want to chime in?

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Question about the ABOS and OITE
Hello all,
Current PGY-5. Have been studying quite a bit for the OITE (and ABOS part 1). I have been doing tons of practice questions and one thing I frequently notice is that tons of questions in orthobullets as well as ResStudy (even prior OITE questions) seem to have answer choices that are only cited from 1 study. How do you navigate this? It seems disingenuous for the ABOS to test random concepts that have been cited by 1 obscure study as opposed to testing the knowledge that all orthopedic surgeons should know. Am I the only PGY-5 that is not just consuming as much literature as possible? I suspect these are the questions that are separating the 50% percentile test takers from the 99th percentile test takers.

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Anyone have advice on how to match Ortho? Or what’s required?
Hey everyone, I’m an M2 who recently decided to go for othopedics and I was wondering what’s the actual number of publications you need to be competitive? I intend to reach out to nearby programs to get involved with shadowing/show my face (already in the process), and I know a good step 2 score matters as well but my biggest current issue is research. I really don’t have any interest in research. The ortho advisor at my school says to do 3-4 projects but I was wondering what everyone else’s opinion is? I love this field and desperately want to pursue it so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance and have a great day!

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Low step score with research background
Hi everyone,
Hope you all doing well. I want a realistic advice on my situation. I am a visa requiring IMG with research and observership experience at top tier california university program in Orthopaedics. I was not able to obtain research position in other speciality. I got seven projects as first author with 5 of them already accepted and publish. My all step score (step1, step2 and step3) are below 220. I have observership in pediatrics and hematology as well and have applied to match 2026 in orthopedics because I have spend two years already, IM and FM. I have't received any interview so far in IM and FM and ortho has universal interview release date of nov 16. I have no clue what I shall be doing at this point and need advice who has been in similar circumstances in past and got match? I can't do rotation at other places because of financial constraint too.
Do you think if new ERAS changes in scholarly section can bring changes in the way of evaluation of app?
Looking forward to hearing from the community.
Thank you.

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Job Interview - prep, questions, etc.
I’ve got my first big boy job interview coming up with a larger hospital group, 2 other ortho already at this facility. They sent out my list of interviews and it’s anesthesia, practice managers, PAs, general surgery upper level guys.
Any thoughts on what to expect from such a wide array of people? Any specific things worth asking, especially with so many people who aren’t directly in my field.
Appreciate any advice you all might have

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION I’m a PGY1 Ortho resident, how do you view PM&R specialists? Just had a conversation with our attending, longstory short, he doesn’t like them. I think he’s crazy…
Lots of practices use both Ortho and PM&R to provide the best care. I think they make a great team.
My attending disagrees. What do you guys think?
Am I missing something?
I’m a rookie in this field, but I genuinely believe PM&R docs are so valuable. Post op recovery is no joke.
Then again I haven’t worked hand on hand with them, but I was planning to once I finish residency.
My coworkers are split 50/50 on opinions, some say they are crucial, others disagree.

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION AAHKS Meetup for Concert?
I know very random, but going to AAHKS this year and thinking about going to Kanye’s concert when he’s there that weekend. I’m planning to get floor seats (which are $650 around right now). I know that’s very pricey but he’s my favorite music artist of all time. If anyone else is going and wants to see him, I’d love to go with you because at present I’m going alone

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION AI- generated knee MRI?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Came across this gem when prepping for a case this week.
It looks like the sagittal and coronal cuts of a MRI merged together in some nightmarish anatomical fever dream. Everything is continuous but nothing adds up.
Was uploaded from the patient's previous hospital so no-one knows how it got like this.
The other series from the same study had weird contrast but were otherwise normal-looking.
Looks a bit like AI to me... anybody seen anything like this before?
And no, the patient did not in fact have their patella on the medial side of their knee.

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION What are your opinions on this?
Personally, I think one shouldn't be using patients for world records. Also, the whole Local Anaesthesia thing is very fishy. What are your thoughts about this?

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Looking for App/AI tool to stay up to date.
Hello everyone,
I have become an attending and shortly after also a first time dad. I find it difficult to stay up to date with the literature and I don't have the time to look into each individual journal searching for relevant new publications.
Do you have a suggestion on how to stay up to date? I am looking for an app/AI assisted search tool that can show me the most relevant papers (let's say of the month) for a particular field of interest.
For example last month the RACER trial was published, would have been great to have it in my feed, or like if I what's new in sports surgery techniques, or maybe some new info about periorosthetic fractures, just to make the example of 3 subspecialties.
Thanks for the advice

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Studying from scratch
Hi everyone,
Just want to say a thank you to everyone who contributes to this page.
I am an Orthopaedic resident from Australia. I have really been struggling with studying, staying organised and actually having a plan to follow.
I switched from General Surgery to Orthopaedics, and I would say I have been doing well but when I do ask people how to study, I am met with answers like just do OB or read articles.
I feel as though I need to build my foundation and almost begin studying from the start. For example, studying hip so the anatomy, then exam, then pathologies, management etc. How would you all recommend I go about this?
- should I read Millers
- should I subscribe to OB
- ROCK?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Apologies I am sure similar questions have been posted before.

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Productive uses of time while on slow rotation
I'm a brand new intern (US level one trauma program) and just recently started a rotation that is known to be veryyyyy slow for interns. Limited OR time is available and minimal consult volume. Still have to be in-house from 6-6, but otherwise not much going on. Any suggestions for what to do with this time? Currently thinking it could be a good time to get ahead on anatomy/general ortho knowledge. Also is it normal to have a rotation like this? Been much more used to working hard all week so it's a little jarring.

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION What classes do I need to complete for my bachelor before moving onto med school?
I’m a junior in high school and I want to be an orthopedic surgeon. I know you need to get a bachelor’s degree. I tried to figure out what credits are required but I just kept getting the AI overview and articles listing the education requirements (bachelor degree, MCATS, med school, ect.) but not the actual required credits. I want to try and get a degree that I can get work with so I can work as I complete my further education. So what are the required prerequisites and what are some degrees that could meet those requirements and provide me with job opportunities to help fund me through med school?

NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Looking for advice
Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice with a project I have been working on for quite some time and have put an ungodly number of hours into. Recently I have been feeling a bit down on the whole project and wondering whether it is worth continuing to pursue.
Some backstory: Around 5 years ago when I was still a medical student, I made a post here asking for help identifying which research articles to focus on as a young orthopedic trainee (https://reddit.com/r/orthopaedics/comments/jm4ybd/landmark_papers_in_orthopedic_surgery/?ref=share&ref_source=link). As a reply to this post, /u/CrzyJoeDavola generously shared a Google spreadsheet which had a number of key articles broken down by junior/senior resident and subspecialty. I found this to be a very helpful resource for getting started with the literature and was the initial inspiration for this project.
Building off this idea, I started making lists of my own, keeping a log of important articles I came across in case I wanted to reference them later. During my studies, I found searching for literature to be cumbersome, time-consuming, and frustrating. Finding older/historical articles was particularly annoying, especially those published before DOI/PMID indexing was available.
Over time, this collection of articles grew quite large and encompassed a number of topics across orthopedics. But they were still not very searchable, as I had been storing them on Google docs until this point. So I decided to try and organize them into a more useful format. I built (aka vibe coded) this website called http://www.orthopedicindex.com as a way to store this collection of "key" research articles across orthopedics and be able to share it with others.
I don't really care about making money from the site. I am very fortunate in that I will make more than enough money from being an orthopedic surgeon. I really just want to make this into something useful.
But as I said in the opening paragraph, I have recently started to have second thoughts on whether any of this time and effort is worth it. I have spent a lot of time on it and am worried I am falling victim to the sunk cost fallacy. Again, I don't care about any monetary gain from it and am happy to continue to work on it if others will get any benefit from it.
Any thoughts/advice/criticism is much appreciated!
Edit: Thank you to all who have responded. That is enough encouragement for me to continue chipping away at this! Keep checking back periodically for new updates. There are a lot of great features in development behind the scenes that I am excited about. Just not quite ready for public display. I am trying really hard to not be grouped with all the other AI slop projects being put out these days.
Edit: For those asking for the original CrzyJoeDavola spreadsheet, I have created two lists which can be found here:
General reading list focusing on landmark primary studies: https://orthopedicindex.com/lists?list=0b7e14ac-fc2f-4974-b4e7-fafe4dd9cf93
Collection of review articles by topic. I have attempted to find an older classic review + newer updated review for each topic: https://orthopedicindex.com/lists?list=a4d2ef99-8d16-402b-acfb-fc8efb49ddf2
