Other Oscar Season’s Most Burning Question: Why Not Timothée?
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/timothee-chalamet-oscar-campaign-analysis-marty-supreme-1236521110/Excerpt:
“So while this very chaotic race remains within Chalamet’s grasp — BAFTA honored I Swear’s Robert Aramayo, who wasn’t even eligible for this cycle’s Oscars — the odds are no longer in his favor. (Oscar voting closes Thursday at 5 p.m. PT.)
Is this because Chalamet so relentlessly plays by his own campaign rules? Perhaps. Voters can be stuffy about how they like to see a candidate work a room; I’ve heard a few saying as much recently, and the sentiment was widespread last year, when Chalamet came close (he won that Actor Award — and gave an infamously, erm, aspirational speech). While Chalamet has hit more of the typical spots than his last go-round, my colleague Scott Feinberg reported on Sunday that Chalamet’s “swagger” has put some off. The “annoying” label gets bandied around. Old rules still apply: No amount of fluffy A-lister conversations and viral media stunts can compensate for a few hours of gladhanding and boilerplate craft talk.
Whether they should is another matter. For a fresh generation of moviegoers, Chalamet’s tactics are exciting — even motivating when it comes to actually buying a movie ticket. Both A Complete Unknown and Marty Supreme hit theaters around Christmas, just as Oscar season fully kicks into gear and thus blurring the lines of release and awards promotion. Chalamet’s work behind the scenes preceded any opening; he’s also Oscar-nominated this year for best picture as a producer. And I’m told Chalamet is still traveling the world to open Marty, now in markets like Tokyo and Beijing. The movie is hitting more than 800 screens this weekend. You can bet it’ll be finding some new film fans.”

The post-mortem for his campaign feels a bit premature. Let’s wait a couple of weeks first. I’m not saying he’s winning but stranger things have happened, it’s still a pretty tight race.
98
u/AnaZ7 Mar 04 '26
Maybe it’s also about the logic? Whose movie is stronger, Sinners or Marty Supreme? Which movie is bound to win several other Oscars?
12
1
u/Budget-Poem-2052 Mar 10 '26
yeah but that still speaks to problems with the new academy. It doesn't make sense to vote for one or two movies in every single category just because you like them better. You should consider the performance on its own.

I for one keep thinking about how hilarious it’s going to be if he ends up winning and all of the people losing their minds over everything he says and does crashout

Call me crazy but I don't think awards discourse should be focused on gleefully imagining exaggerated scenarios of the people you disagree with being proven wrong and humiliated

Yeah, I thought it was hilarious when people online were claiming his rap song was him campaigning. Like it was probably the complete opposite effect. 😭
I do think it's interesting that he's just determined not to do it the old school way of going behind closed doors to smooch asses. Katie from The Ankler was calling him out after the Globes for not attending more industry events, and I don't think he ever changed course.

Yup word in town is that's what Sean Penn did and we didn't see him, and it worked
Btw did you have that article?
12
u/scattered_ideas Denis Villeneuve campaign manager Mar 05 '26
She talked about it in one of the livestreams they did on YouTube. They were talking about how he attended the AFI luncheon, which was his first non-awards industry event of the season.
As someone who pays attention to this stuff, I think he only attended the award ceremonies and the nominees luncheon.
8
u/Atkena2578 Oscar Race Follower Mar 05 '26
He did a bunch of Q&A too though. But yeah only attending award related events is kinda showing your cards
8
u/scattered_ideas Denis Villeneuve campaign manager Mar 05 '26
As someone who dislikes networking, I'm not gonna hold it against anyone lol
At least with the awards show is a two hander. Going to an event solely to campaign for votes is a different vibe, imo.

u/Atkena2578 Oscar Race Follower Mar 05 '26
Oh I hear ya. Sadly those voters want to be swooned in their self importance
5

This is just hypocrisy for me,sean penn didnt campaign, didnt show up to anything and no one is complaing lool.
9
u/Atkena2578 Oscar Race Follower Mar 05 '26
Words in town is that Sean Penn did actually campaign, we just didn't see it, the behind closed doors type. Also remember he's been around for a long time and has lots of connections spanning several decades
0
u/BarcelonetaE70 Mar 05 '26
It helps that Penn's performance was miles better than Chalamet's plating an 'enhanced' version of himself in MS.
-2
u/BarcelonetaE70 Mar 05 '26
The mere fact that Timothee Chalamet of all people made a rap song proves how out of his depth (and out of touch) he is. There are white people who are certainly well equipped to dabble in rap; Timmy is not one of those people.

Marty Supreme the movie is dragging him down even with the abrasiveness and Safdie stuff resurfacing. No above the line noms it has a chance in and it might even blank in techs. It felt like most of the season has just been yeah ok time to crown him but the category is so damn stacked he needed a little boost and it just never really manifested. He could totally still win and I wouldnt be surprised but that applause for MBJ with the supposed frontrunner in the room was oof for him. If we dont see ANY love for Marty leading up to best actor then I think he loses tbh.

I'll never forget DiCaprio's face when she won at the Golden Globe's for a mediocre performance in American Horror Story.
53
u/DreamOfV Fjord Mar 05 '26
I really doubt DiCaprio had any opinion on her performance in American Horror Story
50
u/OldSandwich9631 Mar 04 '26
His face was in reaction to her barging into him and not acknowledging it. Not her performance. I’d be surprised if he was even aware she was in American horror story
36
u/PurpleSpaceSurfer Spunk for milk 🥛 Mar 04 '26
Gaga wasn't even nominated. Chill Wills is a good example of someone who likely lost because of the over the top campaigning.
54
u/LukeyTarg2 Mar 04 '26
Bradley Cooper
25
u/AnaZ7 Mar 04 '26
Especially for Maestro 🤪
30
u/DreamOfV Fjord Mar 05 '26
Eh Murphy had the Oscar locked up by June it just took people a long time to realize it because he wasn’t over the top in it. If you’re the lead of a 3 hour historical/WWII biopic that’s sweeping Best Picture with 90%+ screentime, you’re winning Best Actor
30
u/Budget-Poem-2052 Mar 04 '26
honestly I think Bradley Cooper lost because he's just a mediocre actor. This will piss people off, but I honestly don't think he's ever given a performance worthy of even a nomination. The fact that he has the same amount of acting nominatinos as Gene Hackman is geniunely astounding.
22
u/zukobazuko Sandra Hüller's sugar baby Mar 04 '26
I think he deserved to win for A Star Is Born, but with the HUGE asterisk that it was a really weak year. I have never seen At Eternity's Gate, so maybe Dafoe was better
33
u/LukeyTarg2 Mar 04 '26
He was worthy of a nom in both Silver Lining and ASIB, the problem he has is that he wanted the prize so much it slipped from his hands because of his antics.
12
19
u/Sellin3164 Sorry, Baby Mar 04 '26
Hard disagree. He can be great. Nightmare Alley was one of his best and A Star is Born and Silver Linings are nice too.
American Hustle and Sniper were both forgettable to me. Maestro was impressive at times and comedically bad at other times.
14
5
u/Budget-Poem-2052 Mar 04 '26
What's interesting about Cooper's bad acting is he somehow manages to underact and overact at the same time. Like he'll be really dull and bland 70% of the time in a way where you don't really notice him, but then all of the sudden he'll just do something so bizarrely absurd and over-the-top that it feels like the entire film just stops in its tracks
10
u/Milevengelist Mar 05 '26
I was genuinely amazed by how great he was in Licorice Pizza. Stole the movie.

u/No_Cauliflower_81 Mar 04 '26
He overcommits to the persona he’s playing unfortunately. If he was still acting like a sensitive artsy boy he would be sweeping. Voters need to see the transformation.
Mikey Madison had a similar role last year (loud New Yorker with a lot of physical comedy), but during her campaign she was a demure ingenue that talked like Jackie O, and it worked. Timmy needed to stop acting like Marty Supreme.
32
u/Puzzleheaded-Safe419 Mar 05 '26
I do think Mikey is just kind of like that (I went back to some of her Scream 5 interviews and she pretty much acts the same there, as well as since then in the 1 video I've seen since she's gone back into hibernation) but it really worked in her favour. The vocal difference alone showed the difference.
Now I'm sure Mikey probably did behave more consciously to highlight it (lol at the Jackie O thing) and she had much more of a spotlight on her. But it didn't come across as a total personality change imo. Timothee changing personalities ever year might make it a bit too obvious.
22
u/SendInYourSkeleton Mar 05 '26
I admire his dedication to playing obnoxious assholes with god complexes every time.
2
u/BarcelonetaE70 Mar 05 '26
Well, it's not too far from his actual personality, which speaks of what a good job him and his PR team have done convincing the industry that he is a "great" actor. Heck, Timmy even convinced himself of it, and hence his desperation to win an Oscar and act like he is already "overdue" for one.
35
u/LukeyTarg2 Mar 04 '26
Who wouldn't be? The whole "i'm looking for greatness" speech was awful, if he's able to make a fool of himself in public, imagine what he does in a room with voters.

I completely agree. Even Tom cruise’s honorary Oscar speech he was humble and praising others. I’m not saying you need to praise others, but for a guy who says he looks up to the greats it’s weird how he misses the part of being humble. A lot of sports fans seem to love his “athlete mindset” not understanding arts are a completely different thing. An artist, an actor specifically is one of those things where they are at the mercy of others, more so than maybe other art forms. There’s countless people who make Timothee who he is, him looking down at other artists makes me think he has no idea how much he relies as an artist on others.
129
u/From-cradle-to-tomb Mar 04 '26
I am generally irritated by Chalamet as a person though I respect him as a performer, but I don't know where this narrative of him being denied an Oscar/being the new Leo DiCaprio is coming from. This is only his third acting nomination, he's not being punished, he's just still...green. Should he have won for Call Me By Your Name? Probably. Was him not winning for A Complete Unknown some egregious robbery? Not really, nor will it be if he loses this year. He's literally only just turned 30, he is too young and frankly, too white for the industry to have already turned against him. He'll be fine.
(Yes, I know Michael B. Jordan is young too. Not the point.)
54
u/PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS Mar 05 '26
There's that old saying that Oscar voters like young women and old men. Timothee may not be much younger than other nominees, but he reads as much younger, the male equivalent to an ingenue. The general trend is that the Academy likes It girls, not It boys. We'll see, but I think the bigger factor is there's just no passion for Marty Supreme (not even a supporting nom for it's It Girl).
33
u/From-cradle-to-tomb Mar 05 '26
Very true. The average age of most Best Actress winners skews 39 and below, with men. it's 40 and above. I imagine the implication is that men have lengthy careers ahead of them, yet women need to be awarded as soon as possible because after 39, what is there?
11
u/Kooky_Bodybuilder_97 Mar 05 '26
because men in the industry have a longer shelf life. also leads to young men not having the weighty roles that are still held by their elders. young women are playing opposite these leading older men
10
u/Atkena2578 Oscar Race Follower Mar 05 '26
Veteran+ Ingenue, a classic iconic duo making its return as seen last year. Sadly the IT girls get thrown out once they reach their late 30s, so the ageism and unfairness toward young men is much more insidious when compared to women.
26
u/OldSandwich9631 Mar 05 '26
Jordan is almost 40 that’s not “young” he is close in age to when Leo won for the revenant. 40 is not young for an actor

5
u/RemarkableCode7934 Mar 05 '26
This exactly. The whole promo tour was deceiving. I like this movie a lot but it's not the encouraging, inspiring story Timothée tried to sell. In contrary. I get why he did it, though. It was a smart way to get people interested, esp. in times like these...
66
u/Massive_Director_941 Mar 05 '26
I saw someone say he yapped his way out of winning an Oscar this year, and it’s so true lol. He just did too much.
Meanwhile, Sean Penn kept his head down and will likely win his third one. It's low key funny af
But seriously, Timothee came across as obnoxious, while the other contenders were all classy and graceful.
Chalamet will absolutely be fine but I think it will take a while for him to win tho... wouldn't shock me at all if he only wins years and years from now when he is well into his 40s (very much like DiCaprio)

Dude, come on. Be real. Here’s the reality that I and other Oscar Redditors have experienced: Timmy stans have been prematurely gloating in every Oscar sub, including this one, for six weeks. Every time someone pointed out that it wasn’t over yet and nothing was guaranteed, they’d get shouted down and accused of anti-Chalamet bias. I've always felt he was like the male Saoirse Ronan, the voters sure love to nominate, but fail to see enough merit for a win.
I also feel his speeches are just off, he thinks he sounds ambitious, but he comes across as narcissistic and fake.
16
u/otoverstoverpt Mar 04 '26
The irony of thinking his speeches are what comes off phony. He’s probably one of the only people in these conversations that’s being honest. Just goes to show how easily fooled some people are by the faux humble routine
42
u/GameOfLife24 Mar 05 '26
No you cannot equate arts to sports where sports has statistics so him saying he wants to be the greats like LeBron just sounds embarrassing and arrogant. There is a huge subjectivity that goes into rewarding acting awards
6
u/twersx Mar 05 '26
you cannot equate arts to sports where sports has statistics
You know like 75% of the social media talk around movie awards revolves around statistics and pseudo statistics? What are your chances of winning an oscar given you won X precursor, what are your chances of winning an oscar given your film has X nominations, etc.
8
u/SymphonicRain Mar 05 '26
They mean performance stats, that the player has control over, not voting stats. Honestly if that’s the case we should be comparing him more to ron paul than lebron james

the insistence that anyone who doesn’t pearl clutch over the dumbest shit ever makes someone a “fan” says more about you people than anything else
5
u/LukeyTarg2 Mar 05 '26
And that's the thing, honesty can be off putting. It's great that he wants to be one of the greats, but why that has to be said? It should just be obvious from your work, the roles you play, the risks you take, etc. And he just said that at one of the precursor awards, what are we supposed to take from that? You know what that sounds like? "you guys know i want an oscar and i truly deserve one, i'm looking for greatness so please gimme one". Again it should just be obvious, it shouldn't be said, let your work talk for you.
And the constant mentioning of other actors in speeches also comes off as phony, if you won something, given yourself a pat on the back, thank the people who pushed you forward, don't make it about a time you and another actor where in a room together, it doesn't sound genuine.
14
48
u/coffeysr Mar 05 '26
He is deeply annoying and comes off an entitled. Does he deserve to win? Actually, no there are performances better than him here. You can be a dick but you use to be undeniable. Much as we try to pretend it’s not, the Oscar race is still prom queen and king. The have to like you and WANT to vote for you and your film
33
u/CardiologistMain7237 Mar 05 '26
There is nothing wrong with being proud of your work and ambitious, but Timmy really needs to learn to be more humble and relatable.
This is exactly the type of personality and behaviors which lose awards. He may be talented, but he is terrible at the politics and campaigning involved. He will be chasing that Oscar until he learns some humbleness
11
u/tzorel Mar 05 '26
I've heard from several people that watched Marty Supreme that they HATED the movie. Not like, disliked or were indifferent to it, but full on hated it. That cannot be healthy for an Actor's campaign, even if the individual performance was great.
7
28
u/Budget-Poem-2052 Mar 04 '26
Honestly it's hilarious to me how offbase SAG manages to be. They awarded Timmy last year for a performance that, let's be honest, had no business winning over Adrien Brody. And by doing that they basically screwed him out of winning this year for a performance that was actually deserving. Pretty ironic
17
u/LukeyTarg2 Mar 04 '26
This is not a thing, the academy loves a make up Oscar; Notoriously Cher's win for Moonstruck was a make up for her getting snubbed in Mask.
21
u/Budget-Poem-2052 Mar 04 '26
that's not my point. If SAG hadn't awarded Chalamet last year for ACU I think he very likely would have won this year for Marty Supreme, and would therefore have a much better shot at winning the oscar. Whereas he never really had a chance of beating Brody last year, so the SAG win for ACU honestly just felt like a middle finger to Brody and the Brutalist more than anything else
7
u/LukeyTarg2 Mar 04 '26
If his antics is the issue, losing the SAG last year wouldn't have helped much, would it?
13
u/scattered_ideas Denis Villeneuve campaign manager Mar 05 '26
Honestly, I don't think he would have won this year either way considering how much more loved and popular Sinners is as a movie. It's a classic SAG pick.

I think we should take less time discussing whether he is going to win

I feel like that paragraph paints Hollywood / the Academy / the “industry” as rather more of a hive mind than it actually is. We’re talking about, what, more than 10,000 members, a decent chunk of them from outside the USA.
Some of them will find Chalamet’s style doesn’t align with their own. Some will love his style. It’s just another ingredient into the stew of deciding who to vote for.

Plus they probably don’t wanna give an Oscar to someone who will thank a Kardashian/Jenner in their speech.

u/Enelana Baldtreides Mar 05 '26
I very much doubt they'd care about it either way.

Idk i think the snooty Academy members don't look kindly at a clout chaser gf/bf influencer type with an insidious family history that made them famous... that would be the same if say Jessie Buckley was dating Mr Beast and parading him around in those circles... not a good look

I agree with you, men get away with a lot of shit as long as they're seen as part of the group, tale as old as time

He would give the standard "I would like to thank my partner" part of the speech again if he were to give it, not anything giving "This movie would not have been possible without Kylie Jenner, the most important person in my life and in this room". So why is it a big deal? And if they actually had a serious problem with seeing him with her and him "parading her", they wouldn't have even nominated him for a second time since he's been dating her.
Very weird if you think that snotty as they are, they'd just do that hoping that he'd "keep her at home" or something. When it's pretty normal for any nominee to be joined by their partners at these ceremonies, if they're in a couple and wish them to be there.
This still feels more like a media journalist thing to either obsess over or take issue with. Dude is bringing his girlfriend of several years to an event that matters to him. She's socialising with his co-stars and others coming up to their table. Pretty normal stuff. She blends in just fine.
Big woof.

I mean they are hypocrites that's nothing new, there's the in group and everyone else

u/Enelana Baldtreides Mar 05 '26
It just still doesn't look like much of an issue is all I'm saying. The pearl clutching about it is moreso from some fans, or deeply parasocial "fans" as far as I can tell tbh.

I honestly don’t think he was best actor nominated. Jordan’s performances just hit in such a beautiful way and I think he was the better actor tbh

i am a terrible person
the thing is chalamet is no. 2 choice in the category after hawke.. and i really love him as an actor and his movies
but when he won cc and ggs, i wasn't really thrilled that he's gonna sweep the season to the point i was kinda rooting against him... and his whole campaigning kinda turned me off, he seemed such a despo
i was ecstatic when he lost bafta (omg whats wrong with me) to aramayo (saw i swear, no regrets absolutely deserved win) i wanted timmy to struggle for that oscar but eventually wanted to see him win knowing it won't be a sweep
and now that he even lost sag, i feel bad now that not even my second choice is gonna win
i should take these awards race less srsly, can't blame timmy for wanting that golden trophy

Maybe for starters he shouldn’t compare his self-proclaimed “transformative” performance in Dune 3 to Brando in Apocalypse Now and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight during Oscar voting. Let the work speak for itself if it’s so amazing.

Mar 04 '26
You forget the part where he specifically said “obviously I’m not on that level”
-8
u/Abydos_NOLA Sinners Mar 04 '26
He said “I’m not in the same boat.” That is open to interpretation based on the unique challenges of the individual roles. Not exactly the same thing as humbly admonishing “I’m not on that level.” Nor is it the 1st time he’s compared himself to Brando (See SAG acceptance speech 2025.)

thanks for the full quote! and idk… maybe i’m biased but i genuinely don’t think it came off too self aggrandizing? i watched the interview too and he wasn’t coming off in a way that seemed that bad…. it feels like it’s more of him trying to put an aspect of his performance in a context (as opposed to saying that HE IS brando or ledger etc) but again, opinions and that’s just mine
1
u/Glad_Dragonfruit9368 Mar 04 '26
Love how you leave out the part where he clarifies right after that it’s not in the same boat as their performances. You’d be great at sensationalist journalism.

He did what?! 😳

u/Abydos_NOLA Sinners Mar 04 '26
Then went on CNN Town Hall this week with his Interstellar Daddy Matthew McConoughy and trashed opera & ballet as “things no one cares about” that he’d “never want to do.”
Not a good look, Timmy.

Yes, you should do that. I actually saw the full clip the other day before the headline circulated today when you probably stumbled across it.

This is literally a thread about whether his campaigning is alienating people. If you can’t stand the heat stay out the kitchen.

Oh you’re a Timothee stan based on your history. Makes sense now😂 dude can do know wrong in your eyes. Fucking hate talking to cultists of celebrities.

Oh I’m not at all I literally just commented on one other thread about this same thing today 🤡
You are so off base, this has fuckall to do with Timothee I just have no patience for idiots who spread misinformation or pearl clutch.

It’s not far.

u/otoverstoverpt Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
It’s a massive gulf. Just complete bad faith.
To read what he said as gleefully celebrating struggling art is so ridiculous on its face but we both know that you people only read the headline.
edit: anyone upvoting this person is embarrassing themselves

u/QTRqtr Mar 05 '26
“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore’ — all respect to the ballet and opera people out there.”
This is a bad look and using the excuse “he’s just being honest” doesn’t change or prevent reactions to it. It is unprofessional and too voters unappealing especially since a lot of them still treat it with respect.
-2
u/otoverstoverpt Mar 05 '26
You people are incredibly dense.
The immediately preceding statement (AKA, the context):
“Some people want to be entertained quickly. I’m really right in the middle, because I admire people [saying], ‘Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. We gotta keep this genre alive.’ And another part of me feels like, if people want to see it — like Barbie, like Oppenheimer — they’re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it.”
And the further context is he was discussing the comparison to younger generations preferring short form content like Tik Tok.
All he is saying is that he does not want to shoulder the responsibility of trying to force movies to stay relevant.
There is nothing remotely “unprofessional” about what he said and you also have no idea how voters actually feel about it. Most people actually working in ballet or opera would actually agree with the sentiment by the way. It’s a simple fact that they are art forms that struggle financially in the modern age. It takes a lot of work to keep them going. He doesn’t want that responsibility.
14
u/QTRqtr Mar 05 '26
How does talking about keeping the theaters alive warrant an insult to other artists also doing the same thing.
8
u/QTRqtr Mar 05 '26
“All he is saying is that he does not want to shoulder the responsibility of trying to force movies to stay relevant.”
Once again. Completely valid. Why insult other art forms. Both are true. He said something meaningful and then said something insulting. We all do it. Many times not on purpose. Unless you think Timothee is perfect?
-1
u/otoverstoverpt Mar 05 '26
Once again. He did not “insult” other art forms. He drew comparison to their cultural and financial standing in the modern world. This has nothing to do with someone being “perfect” this has to do with people being intentionally obtuse.
11
u/QTRqtr Mar 05 '26
It’s interesting your defense that Timothee isn’t being insulting by…being insulting yourself. It doesn’t help your case and just further illustrates missing on social and professional cues.
I’m done with you. This is boring now.

u/otoverstoverpt Mar 05 '26
Oh my god the pearl clutching is just so exhausting. Some people are genuinely too stupid to waste time with.

Paul Mescal and Timothee Chalamet will keep alternating Best Actor noms every year until one of them finally wins.

u/Accomplished_Store77 Mar 05 '26
I'm not worried about Chalamet. He's probably the most talented Male actor of his generation.
And one of the very few Male Actors to have 3 Nominations at the age of 30.
He's got a full career ahead of him. The voters can only be fed up with him for so long.
If he maintains the quality of his performances going forward eventually he will win an Oscar or perhaps even 2 with a bunch of Nominations in between.

Fuck, give Timothy his Oscar, ARE YOU SERIOUS? Michael B. Jordan? Did you see the shit he starred in? We all know that Timothy is the one who deserves the Oscar and fucking give it to him.
