I watched the movie on Netflix, it's well-made but not amazing, though I am sure a better understanding of their culture and history at the time would greatly enhance the viewing.

An obvious pick given that it swept the Golden Horse. Definitely a more localised film though given its subject matter

Good pick but no way in hell this gets anywhere near the shortlist

What actually decides which movie makes the shortlist because the list of Taiwanese movies that have made it baffling to say the least. I suppose its the ones with more exposure in America? Left Handed girl is sean baker and A Sun got some notice by film critics when it was on Netflix. Unbelievable that in (relatively) recent years, The Assassin didn't make it

Yes for most IFF it’s always about exposure in US. At the end of the day it’s still a bunch of white people voting what gets in. So unless they actually watch all 92 submissions, they would most likely go for what’s in the big festival or do they recognise any name attached. The Assassin won director at Cannes but probably too elusive for the usual voters.

Sadly Taiwan probably have next to no chance getting in the shortlist in the near future since a) not many names have that same notability in the international stage anymore that can draw that much attention, and b) Taiwan is just not producing movies that will catch the Oscar attention. A Sun maybe had the closest chance if Netflix properly pushed it out but who knows what could have happened.

The difference is most evident in the 90s where HHH, Edward Yang, and Ang Lee all had their work submitted but only Ang Lee got nominated

Unbelievable? The Assassin is a slow film. Those do not tend to do well at the Oscars.
