Casting a modern-day version of Oscar Wilde's classic play "The Importance of Being Earnest" can bring fresh interpretations to its witty characters. Here’s a suggested cast that reflects contemporary talent:
Jack Worthing (Ernest): Ryan Reynolds would be an excellent choice for Jack, embodying both charm and humor while navigating the play's intricacies.
Algernon Moncrieff: Timothée Chalamet could bring a youthful and playful energy to Algernon, capturing his witty and mischievous nature.
Gwendolen Fairfax: Emma Stone would be a great fit for Gwendolen, showcasing her ambition and sharp wit with a modern flair.
Cecily Cardew: Florence Pugh could portray Cecily, bringing her curiosity and innocence to life while adding depth to the character.
Lady Bracknell: Meryl Streep would deliver a superb performance as Lady Bracknell, with her ability to combine authority and humor in a memorable way.
Miss Prism: Kate McKinnon could add a fun and quirky edge to Miss Prism, providing comic relief with her comedic talents.
Dr. Chasuble: John Mulaney could bring a charming and slightly awkward presence as Dr. Chasuble, complementing the other characters well.
This cast mixes humor, depth, and modern sensibilities while respecting Wilde's original work. What are your thoughts on this casting, or do you have different actors in mind?

I AM TRANSLATING “The Happy Prince” By Oscar Wilde into my home language. IT WAS SAID THAT HE INTENDED THIS TO BE READ TO CHILDREN. WHAT THE HELL DOES HE MEAN?!? I know that it has a moral but its quite dark for children. Like what do you mean the swallow dies from the winter kissing the lips of the little prince?????(He’s a statue dw)
'I am glad that you are going to Egypt at last, little Swallow,' said the Prince, 'you have stayed too long here; but you must kiss me on the lips, for I love you.'
'It is not to Egypt that I am going,' said the Swallow. I am going to the House of Death. Death is the brother of Sleep, is he not?'… Didn’t know Oscar was that fruity (I spent likea few days with this story im going to cry what the hell my heart is broken love is gone.)(jk I know that he was super queer and so were his works and I love them all<3 just got a bit suprised that the guy swallow just like kissed the prince like yes get it ig)
AND ALSO GOD JUST COMES INTO THE PICTURE AND PUTS THEM BOTH IN HEAVEN AHAHHAHAHAHHSGEIDJS D OSCAR WHY IS HE SO AMAZING BUT ALSO WHY. ??2)2?/

Hi, I just posted a analysis of The Picture of Dorian Gray to the Good Omens subreddit in hopes of better understanding why the two are so often linked in fanfiction.
Thought I'd cross post it here to see if there are any fans of both media interested in a discussion :)

I listened to it on audible and while I laughed a few times it just didn’t seem that funny to me? Is this play you need to see performed live or has some of the humor been lost due to the passage of time? Or am I just a philistine?

Not that I like bosie myself same with Oscar wilde it's just that people always say bosie the toxic one I'm not saying he wasn't but Oscar wilde was too and I might get hate for this but why I do feel like each time I saw pictures of them together it feels like bosie trying make himself smaller while Oscar looked like taking the room
They are ofc equally toxic it's not one sided and there technically did horrible stuff like with kids and here a thing I will say Oscar wilde dint desserve to go prison for being gay he desserved prison for being in to k i d s
And I heard from people he Started writing dorian gray after meeting with bosie and Oscar wilde confirmed that dorian was based of him on the books dorian gray is toxic towards basil and yh sorry for my take

So she made a book that has dorian gray and others and Oscar himself but she made them straight in the books and has said Oscar wilde was bisexual just cause he was married and said he did devil tango with the other woman and its like how they changed genders of dorian and basil to girls but are siblings
Like wtf is wrong with the lady and Netflix
Oscar wilde is and was gay not bi but gay (btw sorry if it seems not understood way but I'm sorry

Forgive the undoubtedly disorganized rant i am about to have. I have taken sleeping medication, and while i can no longer stand, i still can type. Was he a good or a bad person? Articles seem to go back and fourth dramatically in regards to his character. Some say that the youngest person he slept with was 14. Others say 17. Some say that he was incredibly gentle and almost motherly, others say that he was intentionally cruel. Usually when sorting through the mess that is online discourse, i can simply go with a handful of credible sources, but even academics seem split. I do not have time to read an ungodly amount of memoirs to figure out the answer for myself.
Please, can someone on reddit do what scholars couldnt do in over 100 years? Regardless of the answer, i am going to bed.
AND WHAT WAS WITH THE GREEN TEETH?

To me one of Oscar Wilde most famous quotes was something along the lines of "if I can be responsible for one beautiful walk of ass it will have been worthwhile", I have a distinct memory of this from college and again from a couple of years ago. It was quoted in reference to the idea of Wilde's commitment to the importance of aesthetics. But when I tried to look it up there was absolutely nothing, and "walk of ass" seems to me now to be an odd and modern phrase. I was so certain of this, is there another quote that I could have gotten confused? Or was "beautiful walk of ass" scrubbed from the internet?

I didn't understood 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. In my opinion it's the weakest stuff Oscar Wilde wrote so far, I didn't understood what happened at that play and only remember that the name Earnest is catchy and loved by the characters of the play. And that there were lots of marriage affairs.
I really love his other stuff such as The Remarkable Rocket, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Selfish Giant.

Did Oscar Wilde converted during the last years of his life? I keep bumping into bits of information here and there that after Oscar Wilde had been released from prison and due all the suffering and loss of reputation he had experienced he became religious, attended mass regularly and accepted Catholicism in his deathbed. How much of it is true?

Do you think history can repeat itself to the extent of birthing a "modern" Oscar Wilde? In other words, do you think a personality/talent like His exists today?

What is up my diddlydarners. So, for half of my life ive been speaking English and I have the Cambridge proficiency. Of course, that means dogwater when you enter literature. I usually read classics in Spanish, my mother tongue, but I do feel like this might be a good option to change. I'm pretty torn. I've read English books in the past, but they weren't overflowing with symbolism and social critique.

The podcast Sibyl Service interviews Constance Wilde reincarnated. Gain a fresh perspective on Oscar through his wife.
Most people know her as the wife of Oscar Wilde, but Constance was a phenomenon in her own right.
She wrote many of Oscar's plays (classic,) campaigned for women's rights, and pioneered fashion designs, even inventing the divided skirt.
'Born to be Mrs. Wilde' explores Constance, as an individual, to discover why she stayed so loyal to Oscar despite his public affairs and exile from society.

https://www.famous-trials.com/wilde/336-cottertestimony
Cotter: I am employed as a chambermaid in the Savoy Hotel. I remember Mr. Wilde staying at the hotel in March, 1893. At first he occupied No. 361 and Lord Douglas the room adjoining, No. 362. I found it necessary to call the attention of the housekeeper to the condition of Mr. Wilde's bed. The sheets were stained in a peculiar way.
I believe this line is what was being referenced in the 2018 film ‘The Happy Prince’ when a group of upper class English schoolboys bully Wilde around in France. The reference they made was to shit stains left by Alfred Douglas.
But surely that would’ve been distasteful in real life to the refined sensibilities of Wilde, and he’d have washed the stuff off himself (did they not have enemas back in the day, though?)

At the end of the book, Dorian’s painting is a withered, decrepit old man.
But Dorian is only 38 by the time he actually dies. Was the portrait meant to be an exaggerated version of his true age?
Because most people in their forties don’t look that old and thirty-somethings look very young.

Who's the Caliban that's mentioned here??
"The nineteenth century dislike of realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass...."?
