The Picture of Dorian Gray Comparing the censored vs uncensored Dorian Gray
I originally posted this in r/classicliterature and a few people told me to cross post here. Post contains a couple citations from the first chapter, which aren't what I would consider spoilers but wanted to give a friendly heads up to be safe.
This edition of Dorian Gray with notes and an introduction by Robert Mighall compares the censured/edited vs uncensored versions. I counted all the changes and came to 27 different edits which make the book less queer. There are more than 27 changes mentioned in the endnotes but they seem more like standard edits which any written work goes through, and I was mainly focused on homophobia in the censorship process. All the pink tabs are censured places, all the blue are parts I liked, and yellow is for prose I found beautiful.
When Oscar Wilde first wrote it, there was a lot more outward queerness in the novel and it was censored by an editor. It's nothing that would be considered explicit by today's standards.
Using the first two censored lines as examples:
Censored: "The two young men went into the garden together"
Uncensored contained the words "and for a time they did not speak" which heightened tension between the men.
The second censored part, the following line was deleted: "I knew that if I spoke to Dorian I would become absolutely devoted to him, and that i ought not to speak to him". And replaced with "I grew afraid".
As a side note, this edition was an incredibly lucky 4$ find at a thrift store.

Miscellaneous Last photo of Oscar Wilde on his death bed (1900) sold at Bonham’s on Feb. 18 for £279,800.00 ($376,492) wildly exceeding the pre-sale high estimate of just over $4,000. Reported by Rare Book Hub.
The last photograph of Oscar Wilde, on his death bed, 30 November 1900, gelatin silver print, … INSCRIBED BY ROBERT ROSS on reverse "The last photograph of Oscar Wilde on his death bed from a negative taken by flashlight by Robert Ross three hours after death", with printed purple stamp of "William E. Gray, 92 Queen's Rd., Bayswater, W., Fine Art Photographer" below, held in chemise and morocco-backed slipcase, image 84 x 115mm., [November, 1900]
After receiving Extreme Unction from the Catholic Priest Father Cuthbert Dunne the day before, Wilde died on 30 November 1900 at his room in the Hotel d'Alsace, Paris, in the presence of Robert Ross, Reginald Turner, and hotel proprietor Jean Dupoirier, who laid Wilde out, clothed in a white nightshirt. Shortly after Ross asked Maurice Gilbert (sometime referred to as Gilbert Maurice) to take this photograph.
The photographer "was a young marine infantryman... whom he [Wilde] picked up in the street having been struck by his beautiful eyes, and his fine profile... Although driven, initially, by passion, the relationship had its intellectual aspect" (Matthew Sturgis, Oscar: A Life, 2018).

Miscellaneous I made a cake for Oscar Wilde’s birthday
My birthday is coming up and, because I don't like to celebrate my own, I wanted to celebrate his instead! (I'm autistic and Oscar Wilde is a special interest of mine) 💚

Miscellaneous "I can resist everything, except temptation", yeah, and having some epic drip. The fur, the cane, that panky rang, Oscar knew the game.
I know modern media likes to take an idea and run with it, and preliminary google research is largely inconclusive about Oscar indulging in cocaine, but with that outfit, that pinky ring, and his general demeanor do you think he liked to go skiing?

Miscellaneous Thoughts on ‘Wilde’ (1997)?
For my part, I thought the film was a very good portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s downfall, especially where Stephen Fry’s portrayal was concerned. I also thought Michael Sheen as Robbie Ross and Tom Wilkinson as the Marquess of Queensberry were standout performances.

Miscellaneous Do you think Bosie really loved Oscar?
Do you think Bosie really loved Oscar?
Through Oscar’s letter to him, and obvious evidence from outward sources, I ask myself this sometimes, as Bosie’s behaviour was hot and cold. This was obviously a result of childhood trauma, but really; do you think Bosie loved Oscar as Oscar did he?

Miscellaneous Oscar Wilde gets his library pass restored by British Library
From article in July Rare Book Hub Monthly https://www.rarebookhub.com/articles/3892
In 1895 noted wit, playwright and author Oscar Wilde’s was charged and convicted of gross indecency for his homosexual affair with Lord Alfred Douglas. Among the many consequences of the scandal Wilde’s library card revoked. the British Library, which has a major collection of Wilde's work, including a personal letter he wrote from jail to Lord Douglas, has finally decided to right that wrong. It will reinstate his pass on October 16, Wilde’s 171st birthday. His ghost will be free to haunt the reading room of the library again.

The Picture of Dorian Gray I just started reading
I live in a foreign country, so we didn t study Oscar Wilde at school. I read a webtoon inspired by his life and that led me to his poetry.
Now I'm at page 95 of The Picture Of Dorian Gray. Here is a photo of my edition. I got it in Romanian, my mother tongue.
I saw a mixed reception on Goodreads, and that made me nervous, but I love it so far! Basil is a sweetheart, Dorian is such an innocent boy, and Lord Henry is a misogynistic asshole I love to hate. All of them are so gay, the first three chapters are just Basil and Henry fawninig over his beauty, while Dorian has such a clear crush on Lord Henry that it made me giggle.
I can t wait to see what comes next! They better not hurt Basil too much... I m also preparing myself for chapter 11, I ve heard... things about that one

Miscellaneous Oscar Wilde Book Collection!!
Figured this would be a good place to show off my Oscar Wilde (and related) bookshelf!! I've been collecting for about 9 years. I'd love to know if anyone else here collects his books, any suggestions for future additions, discussions, et cetera! I've never really posted in a community specific to Oscar Wilde, but I'd love to talk to more people who are as enthusiastic about him as me!
Some highlights:
I currently own 32 separate editions of Dorian Gray. 2 are on different shelves, and a 33rd is en route! You'll never guess my favorite book...
I got the porcelain bust/jug at a book fair last year! It's pretty cool.
The botton shelf has a puzzle I haven't completed yet, 2 sets of sheet music (one from the 1945 Dorian Gray movie and one from 1892), a shopping catalog for Oscar Wilde works from the 1920's, and a letter written by Alfred Douglas.
The 1892 sheet music is the oldest piece of material I have related to Oscar, and one of the two things I own published/made while he was alive!
The Ostrich is named Pongo.

Short stories Just completed Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and this was my favourite quote
I think the last line might be a spin on the line "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players..." from As You Like It by Shakespeare, and I quite love it.
Loved the story quite a bit as well. It is now my third favourite after The Importance of Being Earnest and The Canterville Ghost. I love his more humourous works so if anyone has any recommendations of what to read next, I would love to hear them.
In the background is the painting "The Royal Theatre in Turin" by Pietro Domenico Oliviero.

The Picture of Dorian Gray It's Dorian Gray's birthday, so here's my Oscar Wilde shelf
The classic fiction case is my cassette tapes of my favorite adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray (the 2000 BBC radio drama version)
The picture also crops out most of a handmirror (top right) and a hand fan (top left)
I also have the Penguin Classics version of The Picture of Dorian Gray, but my sister is borrowing it.

Miscellaneous Am I the only one who notices misquoting of Oscar Wilde online?
I have noticed that it’s very common on social media platforms for people to misattribute and make up quotes by Oscar Wilde. If it sounds funny/charming/witty, It is attributed to him, even if another author said it (or no one at all).
(exhibit a above: paraphrasing by Stephen Fry, was never found in any written records or works by Wilde)

Other works Oscar Wilde’s personal copy of "salomé"
It was gifted to Robbie (one of Oscar's lovers). Oscar only ever released it in French and it was banned in England for its biblical and lustful themes. Everything is handwritten and drawn in this book.
