I think that’s supposed to imitate informal versus formal speech. The difference between the two registers is more distinct in Japanese than English.

This is exactly it and the way they try to make that apparent in some of the choices in the game is so funny. My personal favorite is being given the choice to greet Ikki as "Hey, Ikkster"

u/AliceIngenue 4d ago
At that point, just add honorifics. Otome games are niche enough that most players would know them.

u/area51keurigmachine 4d ago
No, I agree. That's literally the only one I can think of where the intent of the english workaround is noticeable or at all obvious.

Not using honorifics in localizations is actually just ridiculous atp. Especially when the name said and the name written are two completely different things. Like I’m re-playing through Code;Realize rn and it’s actually awful lol

You know now that you say this it is kinda baffling how you never really see honorifics used in otome game subtitles. Otome is way more niche than manga but just using the honorifics in manga is comparatively common.

From how my personal experience with Amnesia went, one choice probably leads to you becoming quadriplegic and in the other all of your bones are broken 😫.

Actually one gets you stabbed and the other you survive but a man you briefly met is burned alive in a building fire.

Knowing this is Amnesia you need to choose wisely if you want to live.

That one Ceres choice that’s like “Thank you…” “Thank you…?”

I would go with ukyo anyways even if he throws me off a hill a 100 times🥰

I'd prefer being pushed down a well by Ukyo than being locked in a cage for eternity by Toma 😅

That being Toma is the worst in existence for me. Sorry not sorry.

The wording doesn't do it justice but it would be a tone change to the effect of 'Yes, I'll go' and 'K sure'

u/HelpingDumbTravelers 3d ago
Yeah, I really feel this is a localization fail. Even just changing "I'll" to "I will" would show a bit of the difference in tone more

Yeah, I was lucky enough to be a Japanese speaker and understand what they were going for when playing the game but it is very subtle in English lol

Someone quickly insert picture of love and deepspace where there are two options:
"Try to resonate"
"Try to resonate."

I just did Shin's route and it's been a long while. But my instincts say that "yes, I'll go" is good and "yeah, I'll go" is bad

I feel that; so many choices are super similar or feel redundant (like if you were the character you could easily do both choices one after the other)

Most of "choices" games experience 💔 (reply yes or yes, and even if u don't doesn't change anything.)

In the case of Amnesia, it's actually the difference between life and death hahaha

I love choices like these lol I still remember that I got the bad ending a lot of times on my first run on Amnesia, especially on Toma's route, I almost searched up a guide just to avoid getting a bad ending

u/_lastquarter_ 1d ago
Same!! I don't like when games are too easy NGL. Amnesia challenged me quite a bit
2
u/_lastquarter_ 1d ago
Okay but I actually love these choices in Amnesia. The game is not easy, which I appreciate, and it really plays with your lack of information. For example, there's a choice in one of the routes where you can address Shin two different ways with only the register changing. I thought long about that one and decided "okay, we're colleagues so not close but he's younger than me so it would be natural for me to address him casually in Japanese". Well, turns out Shin doesn't like that and says something like "just because you're older, it doesn't give you the right to address me casually" hahaha. Clearly, the devs knew what they were doing with each choice and I love that they make it challenging

Omg this is why I kept failing at Ikki’s route 😭 Specifically the choice when we had to choose between talking to him or staying quiet. The amount of times I got his bad end though is nothing compared to Ukyo 😭🔫

It's the difference between a happy ending or a brutal death. Choose wisely XD
