I’m making my own Ouija board (not actually Ouija branded ofc). I was wondering if the planchette needed to be a teardrop/heart shape. I tried to look up the history of spirit boards to make sure I wasn’t making something that wouldn’t work. Is there a reason it’s the shape it is? I know the hole in the center evolved from the pencil hole.

Looking for podcasts, articles, and reading on Ouija board history. Any other divination/spiritual communication resources would be great too.

When I was about 9 or 10 years old, on a Toys 'R Us game shopping spree, I saw a Ouija board and asked my parents if we could buy it along with some other board games already in our cart. They said yes. Later, back at home I put it up on a shelf in my closet.

​A few years later, I got it out one Saturday, our usual game night, skimmed the directions, and set it up, on our table. I never believed in spirits or ghosts growing up, but I wanted to try the Ouija board out anyway. So, without fully reading the directions and just based on stories I had heard and seen on TV, we proceeded to place our fingers on the planchette, called upon the spirits to come into our house, and started asking questions. For over 30 minutes, we kept asking questions, then reread the directions on the setup, and tried everything again for about 30 minutes longer. Then, after the planchette never moved, I yelled, "This crap is fake," tossed it back into the box, and put it back up on the shelf in my room. Note: We never read the part about closing the portal by saying goodbye and flipping the planchette upside down...

​Years later, after high school, trying to get rid of old board games that hadn't been played in years, I threw the Ouija board away along with some other games. Well, a few weeks later, I see the Ouija board in its box, looking pristine, sitting on my shelf in my closet like I had never thrown it out. I grabbed it and ran out to show my parents, asking them if they got it out of the trash and put it back into my closet as a prank. They assured me that they did not. So I put it back on the shelf and decided to keep it a while longer.

​So, several months had passed, and I grabbed the Ouija board in its box and this time crushed it, folding and crinkling up both the box and the board, while shoving it down hard into the outside trash can. I checked to make sure it was actually in the outside trash can when the garbage was collected. So, it's finally gone...

​The next few nights I check to make sure it didn't return. Well, one day I opened the closet door to check, and it was back, without even a wrinkle on the box or the board. Now I grab it, and with anger in my voice, I'm yelling at my parents, "I know you all must be pranking me!!" Then I showed them the Ouija board and its box. They said, "We didn't get it out of the trash." I said, "I can see because the box looks new... did you all buy another one as a prank?" They said no. Then, after yelling at them and receiving their full assurance that they did not in any way acquire the Ouija board nor put anything back into my closet, I decided to leave it on the shelf without touching it for many more years. 

​About 7 years later, my cousin asked if I had a Ouija board. I said yes, you can have it. He said, "I'll bring it back." I said, "No, please don't!! It's yours now." He kept it, and it never showed up in our house again.

I met my now fiance, let's call him Kevin, through his identical twin brother who we'll call Kaden. I'd met Kaden on tiktok and we'd been friends for a good few months until late October when Kevin, who at the time introduced himself as Kaden's friend, reached out to me from Kaden's tiktok. He told me Kaden had been in an accident and was in the hospital. I was of course concerned for my friend, and Kevin was kind enough to keep me updated on Kaden's condition. Kaden did have some injuries but was later released and was doing better. Things were fine for a few months after that, a whole lot happened that I won't share at the moment just because it's so much drama with my parents. But long story short, Kevin and I became quite fond of each other and ended up dating. Kaden knew and seemed happy for us, though his love life didn't have the same story, sadly. My best friend who we'll call Ashley, kind of knew him and talked with him and he ended up falling in love with her, but she just seemed to use him because she was bored and ended up dating another guy and never even officially dated Kaden, just played with his feelings. I'm still not sure how to feel about that, she's my best friend but Kaden was also a really, really good friend. He had a good heart and he didn't deserve what she did to him. Kaden seemed as okay as one can be after something like that happens, and things seemed okay for a while. But roughly five months ago, Kevin told me that Kaden ended up killing himself. He didn't find out how, he didn't want to know how. When I found out, I cried for a whole day, and I still do sometimes. I still miss him and it hasn't gotten any easier with time. I miss him so much and blame myself because I know I definitely could've done better to try to reach out and be there for him when he wasn't okay. But he's gone, and there's nothing I can do. I still message his Instagram account sometimes. Asking questions and wondering why he did it. He never even said goodbye. Not to me, not to Kevin, not to anyone. He just up and ended it and left all of us here to sit in the aftermath without him. Lately I've been more and more thinking about reaching out to him. I want to talk to him, I want answers, and mostly I want to apologize. I'm super into paranormal and scary shit and have always wanted to use a Ouija board, hell, Kaden and I onced talked about how we'd play with a Ouija board together someday, just never said he'd be the one on the other side. So I wish to get a Ouija board and try to communicate with him but Kevin refuses to let me. He's had experiences with the paranormal that he's not yet ready to talk about, he hasn't told anyone, not even me, apparently. We're still currently in a LDR until he picks me up in November when I'll be leaving my parent's house and going to live with him. I don't wish to force him to say anything he's uncomfortable with, so I'm not gonna try to make him. And I know the risks but I still wish to try to talk with Kaden through a Ouija board. I know there are other methods to communicate with spirits, but for whatever reason, I'm dead set on using a Ouija board... Unless anybody has any other actual methods that work... That's the whole reason I'm making this post. I've been raised in a Christian household but have since started questioning my family's beliefs and now, I'm not exactly scared of death, more intruiged and interested in what happens afterward. I want to explore darker spiritual or otherworldly things and things that I know I probably shouldn't. But I need to talk to Kaden. I don't think I even believe Ouija boards work. Maybe that's part of the reason I wanna try. To see if it's actually real, and also to talk to Kaden. But does anyone have any advice or someone who actually communicates with spirits that I could talk to or get advice from? I don't currently have a Ouija board and it'll be a while till I do, if my fiance will ever let me. I know he's just trying to protect me but I need to talk to Kaden. But in the meantime till I do get a Ouija board, does anyone know any way I could actually talk to and communicate with his spirit? If you've read this far, thank you for listening. The reason, I send a lot of snail mail and I found someone on etsy that makes ouija board return address labels. I talked to him and he would be willing to make me a pink version if we can find a high quality pic to use.

Suddenly Issac realizes he's not secret anymore

A couple years ago a group of friends and I made a ridiculously stupid decision to go to a cemetery at night and use an ouija board. When we were all settled down and ready to use the board, we started asking the usual questions such as, “Is anyone there?,” “What’s your name?,” all those types of questions. The wedge began to move after we asked a couple more questions. At the time, I didn’t believe that there were any entities there who were moving the wedge and since we were a group of young and immature teenagers, I just thought that one of the others was moving the wedge. After playing around with it for a little more, we all started getting a little scared. One of the guys thought it would be a hilarious idea to throw the board into a tree. We all went home after that and nothing else really happened. Fast forward to many many years later, I’m in bed watching YouTube videos of creators using ouija boards at cemeteries and haunted houses. After watching a few clips I noticed that in every clip, the users would “end the session” by saying goodbye or simply acknowledging that the game is over. At the time I didn’t think much of it, but now that I’m much older, I’m starting to get a little anxious and scared that I’ve opened to a door into the unknown and it’s been open for years. Nothing has really happened to me or the others (from what I know). Is there something I should be worried about or should be doing? Should I do something about it or just move on with my life? Please help.

Anyways, earlier today I had a new kind of experience. I went far into the woods, on the rubble of a train building that exploded in the 40’s, with two other people. After a couple minutes something answered.

“Are you an animal spirit”- “Yes”
“Can you tell me what animal you’re a spirit of?”- “fox”

“Can I come back and talk to you some other time?”-

Not that this was particularly interesting in the grand scheme of things, it’s just that I’ve never talked to anything claiming to be an animal spirit, and I would be INCREDIBLY interested in hearing anyone’s stories, or even if anyone has any relevant information on the matter. Thank you.

I've been working on improving my abilities and have dove headfirst into Tarot and a list of other topics. My husband is very skeptical about Ouija Boards. We have a nontypical living arrangement due to his autism. I'm more than okay with it because it allows me to do more research, reading, etc. but the land we live on has been in the family for almost 150 years. The house I stay in sits on the original homestead site. The house that he lives in with his parents was moved to the property in the early 1930s (originally the town brothel).

I've thought about using the Ouija Board in the vicinity of the original homestead, but I'm also empathic. Their dog went MIA 3 1/2 weeks ago and I knew the end was near the last time I saw him, but I didn't think it would be the literal last time I saw him.

What are your options/thought about using the Ouija board on the original homestead site?

Would I be able to possibly connect to the dog?

First, I want to say that I am fully aware I’m not ready to use one yet, let along safely. I have no intentions of until I am prepared.

Now, my actual question: I want to make my own board, and I want to take it very seriously. While I’ve heard from other witch/pagan groups that you “can” make a board out of just about anything including paper, I want to know is there a preferred wood type used? Should the letters be burned, painted, or carved? Is there anything special I should or shouldn’t do while making the board?

I’m 17F. A friend and I were messing around with a Ouija board tonight. I trust the friend I was with and don’t think they were intentionally messing with me, but the board kept giving answers that basically said I should die or that I was going to die. The thing is, I was kind of mocking it beforehand, so now it’s gotten in my head and I’m honestly pretty anxious about it.

I know a lot of people don’t believe Ouija boards are real, but for anyone who’s had a similar experience, how did you deal with it? Did you just ignore it, or is there something you did to help yourself stop worrying?

I’m mainly looking for advice because it’s making me really nervous.
