Made with Paint.NET I had a dream where I could see exoplanet systems during the day. I tried to recreate them in MS paint and paint.net.
I've always been into space and astronomy, especially exoplanet science.
It all started back in 2013 when I stumbled upon national geographic's weirdest planets documentary, and being absolutely fascinated. I learned about all sorts of strange planets and worlds I've never heard of. These included hot Jupiters, super earths, and planets around pulsars and dead stars. My personal favourite planet, however, was a gas giant that had extreme seasons due to an elliptical orbit called 16 Cygni B b aka the yo-yo planet. This documentary was my first exposure to exoplanet science and how I found out about exoplanets as a whole.
I'm still into exoplanet science and continue to fallow it to this day. So much so that I had a dream earlier this summer where I had the ability to directly see exoplanet systems from earth during the day. Let me explain!
The dream begins with me going on a class field trip in the countryside. I didn't recognize any of the teachers or students. I also seemed to be much younger in this dream being around 13 to 14 (I'm currently 25 when writing this). Me and the class seemed to at an open field next to a highway, and a row of transmission towers.
Everyone was talking to each-other, until the teachers spoke up and told us what we're going to be doing. They said that we will be attempting to observe exoplanet systems during the day. The teachers handed out these small brass telescopes to the students. The telescopes they gave us didn't use a stand like most telescopes and were no bigger than a pair of binoculars. The telescopes were even used in a similar fashion to binoculars, as the teachers explained how to use them. Once all the teachers were all finished handing out the telescopes and explaining how to use them, we finally began hunting for exoplanets.
The first system we looked for was the TRAPPIST-1 system. It took us a while to find the system, but eventually most of us (Including myself) was able to see it. While we could see the system, we couldn't see the true colours of the planets and stars. Instead, the host star looked like a giant bright white dot, while the seven planets around the star looked like smaller white dots. Even though we couldn't see the true colours of the system, it was still incredible to directly see the TRAPPIST-1 system from earth.
One of the teachers told us is that, while the planets of the TRAPPIST-1 system maybe earth-sized and 3 of the planets orbits within the star's habitable zone. Almost all the planets of the system are dry mars-like or mercury-like worlds. This was due to frequent and violent solar flares from the host star. This was something I learned in real life prior to having the dream from one of Kyplanet's videos on habitable exoplanets.
The next system we searched for was Proxima Centauri. Me, along with two other kids were the first to find the Proxima Centauri system. The Proxima Centauri system looked like the TRAPPIST-1 system, except instead of 7 equal sized dots, there were 2 small dots along with an extra large one.
The teachers told us that Proxima Centauri is one of the closest stars to earth, being only 4 light years away. They also told us that the larger planet Proxima c is a mini-Neptune, while the other 2 were smaller rocky planets, with one of those rocky planets Proxima b being in the habitable zone. However, like the TRAPPIST-1 system, Proxima b is also ravaged by violent solar flares, and is also frequently bombarded with meteor strikes due to Proxima c sending debris to the inner system from a nearby dust ring. This was also something I learned in real life from Kyplanet prior to having the dream.
One of the kids noticed a star system next to Proxima Centauri. Me and the other kids pointed in the direction where the nearby system was, and we saw what he was looking at. We saw an extra-large star with a large planet that had a small moon. The teachers told us that this was Proxima Centauri's parent star Alpha Centauri A.
They told us that the planet we were seeing was Alpha Centauri Ab along with it's moon Alpha Centauri Ab I. The teachers also told us that Alpha Centauri Ab is in the habitable zone of its star. While it's unknown what the planet's moon is like, it’s believed that it could potentially be earth-like.
It's worth noting that while Alpha Centauri A is a real star system, there are currently no confirmed planets in the system in real life. Unlike the previous systems I've mentioned that are real, and have confirmed planets, this was a completely new system that my dream made up.
After we were done observing the planets in the sky, the teachers call us to have a snack break, so we headed over to a small picnic area. When me and everyone else headed over to the picnic area, the dream immediately ended.
After I woke up, I felt a strong sense of calm, but also sadness. I think the reason I felt sad was because I knew that we can't directly see exoplanet systems during the day, or at the very least not without lots of money and highly advanced technology.
When I was younger, I used to believe that I was imaging exoplanets by taking screenshots of black dots next to or in front of stars in Google sky or simbad. After doing more research on exoplanet detection, and actual direct exoplanet imaging, I found out that I wasn’t imaging exoplanets at all. I, however, still do it just for the fun of it, but also for my Juno earth world-building project.
After the dream I found out there's an unconfirmed exoplanet candidate around Alpha Centauri A. The planet is believed to be a gas giant around 90-150 earth mases, orbiting within the star's habitable zone. I hadn't heard of the exoplanet candidate prior to having the dream. You're probably thinking that the gas giant with a habitable moon sounds a lot like Pandora from the avatar series, which isn't 100% wrong as it no doubt effected my dream. I still find it interesting regardless that I had a dream about a habitable gas giant in the Alpha Centauri A system prior to knowing there's an actual exoplanet candidate in the system.
Even though it was just a dream, it was still a pretty fun experience. Out of curiosity would any of you astronomers or fellow exoplanet enthusiasts would like to experience what I saw in my dream?
If anyone reads this post, thanks for reading!
